Overview[]

In Saints Row, Co-op is limited to only a handful of missions that are specifically created for Co-op play.

Saints Row 2 onwards can be played entirely in Co-op, including free roam and all missions and activities, which have differences to accommodate the second player.

All games have achievements that can only obtained by playing Co-op. Some of the achievements require doing all the missions or activities with a Co-op partner. In those cases, it is usually easier to start a new game to ensure both players are at the same completion level.

If the Co-op partner uses cheats, both players save files are marked as cheating.

Diversions[]

Saints Row has no Co-op Diversions.

Cat & Mouse places both players in pre-determined vehicles and one of them attempts to catch the other. In Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third, this diversion is activated by one player killing the other. In Saints Row IV, this diversion is activated from an Activity marker.

Death Tag is available in Saints Row 2 and Saints Row IV. In the former it is activated by one player killing the other, while in the latter it is activated from an Activity marker.

Stuntmen is included in the Corporate Warfare DLC. After achieving at least one silver Diversion star in a Driving Stunt while playing a Co-op game, a prompt is displayed to start the Diversion.

Saints Row[]

There are three Co-op missions: Turbulence, Mob Rule, and the DLC mission Heist, added by the The Gankster Pack DLC.

Achievements[]

  • Bulletproof 10 — Complete Co-op level Turbulence at the highest difficulty level.
  • Errand Boy 10 — Complete Co-op level Mob Rule at the highest difficulty level.

Saints Row 2[]

Unlike Saints Row, the entire game can be played in Co-op mode, and some missions and activities have minor differences from the single player versions.

Missions[]

Some missions played in Co-op contain differences to accommodate the Co-op partner.

Appointed Defender
In addition to Johnny Gat, Legal Lee also becomes a Homie, and must also escape in order for the mission to succeed.
Orange Threat Level
The guest replaces Pierce as a homie, and the radio event doesn’t take place.
Visiting Hours
The host must wheel Johnny Gat out of the hospital and protect him from the Ronin while the guest must get to the rooftop and obtain the Horizon before flying it down to the parking lot for the host to load Gat aboard.

Activities[]

Some activities played in Co-op contain differences to accommodate the Co-op partner.

Escort
The guest acts as the hooker, and must use the right control stick to touch the sensitive spot, then use the left stick to hit up, down, right, left in the correct order to gain pleasure.
FUZZ
This is the same, but the cameraman and the police officers only follow the host, often leaving the guest to find their own car.
Septic Avenger
The player who activates the activity is in charge of the stop start of the truck and uses the rear sprayer while the other controls the front sprayer.
Snatch
Hos can be collected separately, reducing the time it takes.
Drug Trafficking
The host drives the car to the locations while the guest rides shotgun.
Trail Blazing
The guest is given infinite Molotovs in order to score more time. As long as the host has a good grasp of control of the Toad, this one is a walkover.

Metagame[]

The Ultor Exposed DLC includes a metagame to compete to achieve the higher score when playing missions.

Achievements[]

Achievements that can be gained by playing Co-op in the story and activities.

Achievement Gamerscore Description
Duelist 25 Complete all Ronin missions in co-op.
Partners in Crime 100 Complete all campaign missions in co-op.
Pot Luck 25 Complete all Samedi missions in co-op.
Separated at Birth 25 Complete all Brotherhood missions in co-op.
Confidence Men 25 Complete all levels of all activities in co-op.

There are 23 activities that must be completed in co-op in order to achieve this. Completing half the activity in single player, then finishing it in Co-op does not count.

True Pal 10 Defeat your partner in a co-op diversion.

Saints Row: The Third[]

Co-op is a form of Multiplayer in Saints Row: The Third.

Both Online and Offline Co-op is not possible without the Online Pass.

Activities[]

Escort
Like Saints Row 2, the guest acts as the hooker and fill the pleasure meter with joystick motions. In Tiger Escort, the guest instead attempts to keep the tiger calm.

Saints Row IV[]

Co-op is a form of Multiplayer in Saints Row IV.

In the base game, both Online and Offline Co-op is not possible without the Online Pass.

Saints Row IV: National Treasure edition allows System Link Co-op without an Online Pass.[1]

How to play Saints Row (2022) in multiplayer co-op

Does Saints Row have multiplayer? The 2022 reboot of Saints Row may be taking the franchise back to its roots in some ways, but worry not, multiplayer modes are making a welcome return in the series’ latest title. On this page we’ll tell you everything you need to know about co-op multiplayer in Saints Row, including how to initiate a co-op game, how to adjust your settings for your desired level of privacy, and which platforms allow you to join friends in crossplay.

Liam recently chatted to Alice about their favourite thing in Saints Row.

How to play Saints Row in co-op

It’s pretty easy to get started in co-op in Saints Row. On the game’s main starting screen you’ll see a clearly signposted Co-op Campaign option. Click on this and you’ll be given four choices for multiplayer:

  • Host Game: Allow a co-op partner to join in with any of your ongoing saves. (You’ll be given a list of all your existing saves to choose from.) Open-to-all matchmaking is on by default when choosing this option, so be sure to adjust your privacy settings if you don’t want your game to be publicly available.
  • Join Friend: Find a friend who’s online and/or has sent you an invite, and drop into their hosted game.
  • Host New Game: Begin hosting a game in a fresh save. Same rules apply as in the Host Game option above, except that what you get up to is kept separate from your existing save(s). Good for if you want a dedicated save for playing with a particular partner, for example.
  • Matchmaking: Find a co-op partner who’s hosting their game online on a compatible platform and looking to buddy up.

There are also a couple of settings you can fine-tune in the pause menu’s Co-op Settings options to prevent unwanted behaviour from your co-op partner. By default, co-op sessions are open to all once you take your game online, and you might find a matchmade stranger dropping in unannounced at any time; but you can change the Session Privacy setting to «Friends Only» or «Invite Only» to control who can join you and when, if you prefer.

And in addition to the aforementioned friendly fire and pranking options, you also have an HQ Customization toggle that’s only adjustable by the host. This basically prevents your co-op partner from messing with the stuff in your home base when set to «off» (which is where it sits by default).

How does co-op work in Saints Row?

Co-op in Saints Row allows you and a buddy to team up for part or all of the game’s campaign. You can’t have more than two players in co-op mode together at the same time; however, you don’t have to play the whole campaign with the same partner, or indeed with any partner at all if you choose to mix-and-match between solo and co-op play.

Progress carries over between single player and co-op campaigns, and this happens regardless of whether you’re the host or the guest. Both players in the same game can explore the world independently, but if one player initiates a mission, the other player will be teleported to them so that they can complete it together. Which missions are available will be determined by the host’s progress and regardless of the guest’s.

All this means that it’s quite possible for you to play a mission in a friend’s game that’s further along in the story than the point you’ve reached in your solo playthrough. But if this happens, you won’t have to replay that mission when you reach it in your own save. This might make the story a little disjointed; but crucially, it allows you to seamlessly carry over any XP, items, collectables, and achievements you gain while being hosted in a friend’s save back into your own.

Does Saints Row have PvP?

Multiplayer in Saints Row is co-operative in nature, so you won’t be finding any dedicated PvP modes here. However, that’s not to say you’ve got no options to torment your mate a little as you explore the city of Sant Ileso together. As you play and complete challenges, a «prank metre» will gradually fill up, allowing you to periodically transform your friend into an inanimate object for a period of time. It’s a neat way to inject a little competition into proceedings without allowing for griefing, or indeed breaking the overall co-operative nature of multiplayer.

You do also get the option to customise the possibilities of friendly fire in co-op — your choices are full damage, partial/reduced damage, and no damage — so you and your pal can kill some time shooting and beating each other if you want to; it just won’t get you anywhere in terms of progressing through the game. By default, friendly fire is turned off completely and the aforementioned pranking feature is turned on, but either player can customise these settings at any time by going into the game’s pause menu and going to Co-op > Co-op Settings.

Both the host and the guest can adjust these settings from their own version of the menu. But in order to prevent antisocial behaviour, your Friendly Fire settings only affect the damage you take from your partner, not the damage you can deal to them. Meanwhile, Co-op Pranking must be turned «on» for both partners before it can take effect in-game.

Does Saints Row have crossplay?

While Saints Row will be released on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4, crossplay will be limited to cross-gen play between consoles of the same make. In other words, PS5 owners can freely play with PS4 owners, and Xbox Series players may buddy up with Xbone players, but no crossing of the corporate lines is allowed.

For PC players, this likely means that crossplay won’t be a possibility at all, although this hasn’t technically been confirmed yet. I suppose there’s an outside chance that you’ll eventually be able to team up with your fellow Microsoft product owners on their various Xbox-es, but for now, no crossplay on PC seems like the likeliest outcome.

How co-op works in Saints Row

Since Saints Row 2, co-op has been introduced to the Saints Row series. remains one of the hallmarks of this open-world crime saga. The Saints Row reboot is no exception as it continues the tradition of co-op play and adds some extra twists to flesh it out from its predecessors. This guide explains how to start co-op in Saints Row and how it works.

Saints Row co-op | How to play with friends in co-op

The developers of Volition have introduced the same basic set of co-op features from previous games, but have changed some of the rules that players can interact with and how to play with friends. To start a co-op game, open the Co-op Campaign tab in the main menu.

How Saints Row’s co-op system works

Saints Row allows players to start the game together, including the full prologue, and create a character system. Select Host New Game and you will be prompted to invite a friend. Once they join you, both of you can start the Saints Row campaign in earnest.

Hosting a new game requires you to refer a specific friend; the matchmaking system will not place you with players playing in the prologue like in Saints Row. There is no cross-platform play in Saints Row, but you can play on the same family of consoles. Xbox One with Xbox Series and PlayStation 4 with PlayStation 5.

After you complete the prologue and get your apartment, you can use matchmaking to join other players or force them to join you. Now that you know how to play co-op with other players, Saints Row has some new features that will be new for returning veterans of the series.

Several options will appear if you go to the co-op tab in the options menu. Friendly fire is configurable and you can enable or disable the HQ setting and co-prank. Co-op Pranks is a new feature that allows you and your friends to prank each other by completing in-game challenges. A draw will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. Complete this challenge and then you can hold down the right D-pad to prank your partner.

These range from turning him into a sentient cactus or creating a stinky smell to NPCs commenting on their smell.
