Unfortunately, none of the Sailor Moon series and films are on the Disney Plus streaming service. This includes both the classic 90’s Sailor Moon anime series and films and the newer Sailor Moon Crystal series and its Eternal and Cosmos movies. The Japanese live-action Sailor Moon series, often referred to as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon or PGSM, and the Sailor Moon musicals are also not on Disney Plus.

The lack of any Sailor Moon content on the Disney Plus streaming service is simply due to the fact that Disney doesn’t own the rights to the franchise as a whole nor any of the individual Sailor Moon series, films, and musicals.

Netflix seems to own the exclusive streaming rights to both Sailor Moon Eternal movies so it’s doubtful that those productions will be coming to Disney Plus anytime soon. As for the Sailor Moon Cosmos movies, Sailor Moon Crystal, and the 90’s Sailor Moon anime series, anything is possible but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Disney Plus mostly seems to be focused on the Star Wars and Marvel franchises in addition to productions from both the Disney and Fox movie studios right now. There are some anime series on Disney Plus but these are mostly series made exclusively for the D+ platform. Disney simply isn’t into purchasing the streaming rights for shows from companies that it doesn’t already own.

    Yegor Argunov

    defeated the prequel Major Grom

    Author profile

nineteen90s. This is a prequel to the superhero film «Major Grom: The Plague Doctor» based on the Bubble comics.

The film was made by the same people as The Plague Doctor: director Oleg Trofim, cameraman Maxim Zhukov and producer Artem Gabrelyanov. The latter also wrote the script for Difficult Childhood.

The prequel could be a bridge between The Plague Doctor and its possible sequel. But the picture will probably disappoint you. We tell you why you should not waste time watching «Difficult Childhood».

What kind of thunder: Difficult childhood

Date of premiere: January 1, 2023

    Country production: Russia

    Director: Oleg Trofim

Cast: Kai Getz, Sergey Marin, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei, Alexei Vedernikov, Vladimir Yaganov, Daniil Vorobyov

    Genre: Action adventure

    Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes

    Where to watch: 0003

🎥 This is not a full-fledged film, but an extended short film

Russia, 90s. Police officer Konstantin Grom wants to catch the mysterious Anubis: a criminal in the mask of an Egyptian god is killing criminal authorities in St. Petersburg. Anubis seems elusive, but that doesn’t stop Thunder.

At the same time, viewers are shown the relationship between Konstantin and his son Igor, the future Major Grom from the film of the same name.

The plot seems interesting, but the creators did not come up with a suitable story for a feature film. The main problem of the script is that it does not have the traditional second act, that is, the middle. Before the viewer has time to get to know the characters, Konstantin Grom sets off for the final battle with Anubis. And then the movie ends completely.

No investigation, no character development, no unimaginable hardships to overcome. For example, the main villain will be shown only once before the decisive battle — in one of the initial scenes. Neither Grom Sr. nor the viewer has time to build an emotional connection with Anubis. nine0003 Director Oleg Trofim made the musical Ice before Major Grom. Source: «Kinopoisk»

The reason for this is the short running time — with the titles «Difficult Childhood» is only 1 hour and 20 minutes. This is only enough to reveal the relationship between father and son. But the storylines of the villain and Grom’s partners are almost never given time. Because of this, the central conflict does not seem particularly significant.

The villain under the mask of Anubis turns out to be a character who was given a minute of screen time. In addition, his plan to capture the city is not very logical. The episode with the revelation of Anubis’ true identity is puzzling: it seems as if he is a small-time swindler from the Scooby-Doo cartoon series, and not a serious criminal. nine0003

    /list/parenting-is-the-adventure/

Help for parents: 10 films and series that will support the upbringing of children

breaks off in mid-sentence. We are also shown how little Igor Grom learns to think ahead and draw up an action plan on the go. But this line also ends in nothing, although the authors pretended that it would play an important role in the denouement.

The scriptwriters are trying to show Konstantin Grom as a character with gray morals. But after the initial scenes, he turns into a definitely positive character. Source: Kinopoisk

Moreover, the film does not work as a prequel to The Plague Doctor. The fate of Konstantin was revealed in the first film, and his confrontation with Anubis does not affect the city or the global history of «Major Grom» in any way. We will never learn new important details about the character — only that he played chess well and danced defiantly to Eduard Khil.

«Difficult Childhood» would look great in the format of a short film for 10-20 minutes. It would be possible to cut out the entire line with Anubis from the script and devote the movie to Igor’s relationship with his father and the formation of the future Major Grom. Still scenes from «A Difficult Childhood» would look good in the continuation of «The Plague Doctor» — for example, as a flashback. nine0003

As a standalone movie, Thunder definitely doesn’t work. Even the scene after the credits is disappointing: from it you will not learn anything new about the universe. In fact, it repeats the scene from The Plague Doctor.

Anubis was presented as a dangerous villain, but he is defeated without much effort. Source: «Kinopoisk»

Perhaps the creators simply could not realize all the ideas due to the limited budget. There are only five main locations in the film: Gromov’s apartment, Palace Square, a police station, a port, and an abandoned building in the finale. A Difficult Childhood lacks spectacular scenes like breaking into a casino or chasing criminals in hockey masks from The Plague Doctor. There is only one full-fledged shootout at the end — but even it is difficult to see something in it because of the dim lighting. nine0003

Difficult Childhood seems like a major step back from the first film. There were enough flaws in The Plague Doctor, but at least he was captivated by the production. And while watching «Difficult Childhood» it is easy to get bored, even despite the modest timing.

🎨Technically, «Thunder» is almost flawless, but there are questions about the style

The main advantages of «Difficult Childhood» are camera work and editing. Maxim Zhukov, like in The Plague Doctor, selects the best angles and works great with the light in most scenes. And the opening credits with Igor Grom’s story about 90’s impress with dynamics and a sense of style. The director imitates the aesthetics of TV reports of those years and inserts recognizable elements of the era into the frame — pretentious commercials and company logos.

True, alien elements appear later in the film. For example, two scenes are made in the style of modern anime series like My Hero Academia. In them, Grom Jr. presents himself and the people around him as drawn characters with exaggerated emotions and facial expressions.

    /doom-patrol/

The Doom Patrol is an absurd show about the outcasts of the DC Universe. Much better than The Boys

Such inserts seem inappropriate, they do not fit the declared era. If the creators wanted to draw anime scenes, then it was worth focusing on 90s TV series like Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop or Berserk.

Russia in the 90s in «Difficult Childhood» is a little different from the real one. The police were called the police 20 years before the reform of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Adidas is called Adibas. And, apparently, this is not about fakes. Source: Kinopoisk Posters of the first Terminator and The X-Files series hang on the wall of the Gromov’s apartment. Source: Kinopoisk

The 90s in Difficult Childhood seem caricatured and unnatural. Bandits run through the streets, shoot passers-by and blow up police cars. But Igor and his friend do not pay any attention to this. The era looks like it was copied from Monetochka’s song «90». It is clear that this world should not be similar to ours: St. Petersburg in The Plague Doctor was also very conditional. But such exaggerated anarchy still looks like overkill.

At the same time, there are at least elements of the real 90s in the film: there are no recognizable songs, no images from famous films like «Brother». But Konstantin Grom has a jar with used tea bags. And on TV, charlatans treat viewers through the screen. nine0003

    /avatar-way-to-imax/

I watched Avatar: The Way of Water in the largest IMAX cinema in the world and spent 28,000 R on it

The image of the era does not seem to be solid, plausible details are mixed with cartoons. Instead of the 90s, the film could have been zero, and the story would not have changed from this. If you want to be nostalgic, it’s better to review Balabanov’s works or turn on the series “Peace, Friendship, Chewing Gum”.
