17/18 Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world game set in the futuristic dystopian world of Night City, where violence is part and parcel of everyday life. You play as a gun-toting mercenary named V, who tries to make a name for himself/herself, only to fight for survival after a mission gone wrong. Aside from the main quest, there are various other activities V can look into. Night City is a Blade Runner-esque metropolis that offers tons of side quests to boost your street cred and earn some eddies.
Despite initial complaints of bugs and unfinished storylines, the game has gone through numerous fixes, with modders even pitching in. All in all, Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely an open-world game you should look into if you’re into futuristic, high-tech worlds.
16/18 Ark: Survival Evolved
Going from a game with futuristic details to one that is based on the dinosaur era. Ark: Survival Evolved leaves the players stranded on a mysterious island where they need to survive on their own. As you explore the world, you’ll find many dinosaurs that can be tamed using a detailed procedure.
Roam around on your dragon’s back, or attack other dragons and players to your heart’s content. In Ark, you’ll share the world with multiple players opening doors for role-playing and PvP as well. If you’ve ever dreamed of having a dinosaur as a pet, this game is perfect for you.
15/18 Rust
There’s no talking about open-world PvP games without the mention of Rust. In this unique world, you spawn with nothing but a rock and a torch in hand. You have to find different items and craft your own weapon while working on building your base of operations. Once you have good gear, you can also go out and steal from other players.
The game has a perfect amalgamation of PvP and PvE since you can attack real players or raid different sites and fight Scientists to get good loot. You can also raid another player’s base, or defend your own using different traps and airlocks.
14/18 Subnautica
Subnautica is an open-world game that takes things to a whole new level. Set in a future where mankind has the technology to colonize other planets, you play as Ryley Robinson. 13/18 Horizon Zero Dawn

Set in the year 3020, mankind has been dealt a huge setback and divided into tribal factions. Playing as Nora outcast Aloy, who is on a mission to discover her origins, while saving the world from HADES’ rogue machines.
Horizon Zero Dawn gives you a post-apocalyptic look into a world where nature has taken over the reins. With top-notch, immersive graphics and amazing atmospheres, slip into the shoes of Aloy and experience a world like never before.
12/18 Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 sees you in the shoes of a new protagonist, Aiden Caldwell, whose main objective is to find and reunite with his sister Mia. Set over two decades after the events of the first game, the journey of battling Volatiles and other spooktastic monsters means the prospect of more chase sequences.
The outbreak did not stop in Harran, spreading to the rest of the world after a few greedy scientists couldn’t be bothered to tell the truth. Aside from destroying hordes of zombies, Aiden has the opportunity to do a couple of lucrative side jobs and glide about a post-apocalyptic city on the brink of instability.
11/18 The Forest
The Forest is another open-world game where your true enemies are human-like monsters. The game starts with your flight crashing on a mysterious island, and you wake up to find out that there are cannibals living there who want your blood. Not only do you have to get your own food, water, and shelter, but also find weapons to defend yourself.
RELATED: Best Forest Levels In Games
This game has a story that you can finish at your own pace. You’ll be looking for your son the entire time you’re on the island, but dealing with the cannibals will take up a lot of your time. The best part is that you can play this game in multiplayer and invite some of your friends to fight the deadly beasts.
10/18 7 Days To Die
It’s already difficult to deal with zombies in any post-apocalyptic open-world game, but it gets even harder when you have to do it in seven days. As the name suggests, 7 Days To Die leaves you in a world where you have to make yourself a shelter with good defensive capabilities for the zombie raids that’ll come at night on every seventh day.
On these days, the moon will turn red, and you’ll only see zombies surrounding you. You have to be prepared to fight off this horde while finding enough food and water to keep you alive, leading to a stressful and fast-paced experience.
9/18 Dragon Age: Inquisition
The third installment in the Dragon Age series, Dragon Age: Inquisition felt like a breath of fresh air. Set in the fantastical realm of Thedas, you have the option of roaming expansive lands in both Orlais and Ferelden, even delving deep into The Deep Roads.
With a selection of different races to choose from, set out as the determined Inquisitor, on a quest to vanquish Corypheus. From the elegant and gilded Val Royeaux to the barren wasteland of the Hissing Wastes, BioWare certainly spared no expense. Alongside the complex storylines, every character in the Inquisitor’s party is very well fleshed out.
8/18 Valheim
Valheim takes the Nordic afterlife to a whole new level in this survival extravaganza. Placed in the shoes of a deceased Viking, this warrior must put in the work in order to reach Valhalla, the resting place fit for the mightiest warriors. But of course, this all won’t be accomplished in the span of a day.
RELATED: Best Open World Games With Character Creation
With various biomes for you to explore, there are bosses within for you to defeat in order to obtain their powers. The game also offers other activities for you to explore, from building your own boat to navigate the Ocean Biome to attempting to finish your house. Indeed, it seems reaching Valhalla takes an entire lifetime to do.
7/18 Sherlock Holmes Chapter One
Sherlock Holmes takes both a modern twist and a blast into the past. The past games in the Sherlock Holmes franchise by Frogwares have amounted to Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, an open-world spectacle set in fictional Cordona. Sherlock is a young, budding detective, but a rising star in the detective world.
While solving the mystery of his mother’s death, Sherlock takes on the trials and tribulations of the residents of Cordona. From kidnapping to outright murder, there’s always a mystery at hand for Sherlock to solve.
6/18 Sea Of Thieves
Sea of Thieves brings your pirate fantasies to life in this swashbuckling adventure. Channel your inner Blackbeard or Jack Sparrow by taking the helm of your very own pirate vessel, roaming the seas, and looting other ships for treasure. With new seasons jam-packed with a boatload of new updates and additions, there’s always something novel to look forward to.
Whether you’re keen to raid a Sea Fort or simply would like to earn a heck of a lot of money, Sea of Thieves is definitely one of the best pirate games to ever grace our computer screens.
If you’re looking for a fantasy MMORPG of vast proportions, The Elder Scrolls Online is the perfect open-world game for you to indulge in while waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6. With other regions to travel to in the sprawling lands of Tamriel, you can even go back to Skyrim and immerse yourself in the nostalgia.
RELATED: Best Open World Games Where You Can Get A Pet
From the magical island of Summerset Isle to the sweltering heat of Alik’r Desert, The Elder Scrolls Online offers an adventure like no other, with The Elder Scrolls lore explored in a more in-depth manner than ever before. Whether you choose to be a Necromancer or a Templar warrior, you’re in for one hell of a fantasy ride.
4/18 Kingdom Come: Deliverance
One of the most realistic open-world games set in medieval times, Kingdom Come: Deliverance certainly delivers a largely accurate depiction. Our protagonist Henry’s adventure starts after his village was torn apart by the forces of King Sigismund, sparking a fire in him for vengeance and justice.
Kingdom Come definitely does not pull its punches when it comes to realism in the medieval era. From its tricky combat mechanics to having the best mounts, Henry also finds the time to help those around him in multiple side quests.
3/18 Red Dead Redemption 2
If the Wild West is one of your favorite historical periods, then Rockstar Games has captured its essence in its Red Dead Redemption series. Red Dead Redemption 2 follows the steps of our protagonist Arthur Morgan and the dying days of the Van der Linde gang in the years before the original game.
While battling the vicious factions that threaten the lives of Arthur and his loved ones, Red Dead Redemption 2 truly captures the ‘kill or be killed’ atmosphere of the Wild West. From hunting down deadly creatures to taking part in shootouts, the aspect of mortality is embedded into the very soul of Wild West America.
2/18 Grand Theft Auto 5
The danger-ridden saga of Grand Theft Auto 5’s riveting trio is sure to never result in boredom. Set in the open-world area of Los Santos, San Andreas, and Blaine County, the prospect of exploration is both vast and unending. Following the stories of Michael, Trevor, and Franklin, who are besieged at all sides by government or criminal factions that intend to use and eliminate them.
RELATED: Best Open World Games With Turn-Based Combat
The main story aside, the city itself allows for an immersive, everyday experience. When you’re not organizing a heist or being shot at, mundane activities such as getting a haircut or purchasing property makes it so much more realistic and relatable. Even criminals need some downtime, after all.
1/18 Elden Ring
FromSoftware has returned to the fore with its launch of Elden Ring, and it’s the start of a fantasy series that’s bigger and better than any before. As the lowly Tarnished roams The Lands Between with the goal of ascending to Elden Lord, many stand in their way of ultimate glory.
From the Hogwarts-esque magical region of Liurnia to the starry underground metropolis of Nokron, Eternal City, the Tarnished has a long journey ahead of them. But with the perks of powerful Ashes of War and an array of legendary Spirit Ashes, all Shardbearers shall fall to the might of the lowly Tarnished.

Best Open-World PC Games
Contrary to popular belief, open-world games are not a genre but rather a game mechanic. Open-world games are characterized by vast landmasses without loading screens. The freedom of exploration provides an uncanny feeling like you are immersed in the game. Open-world games can be RPGs (role-playing games), third-person adventures, or even racing games.
RELATED: Biggest PC Games By File Size, Ranked
As a gaming platform, PC has always stood out for its customization and ease of upgrading. The ability to upgrade a computer with the latest specifications for unparalleled power is a liberating feeling. The PC scene has the biggest library of any platform on the market, but which are the best open-world games available through Steam, Epic Store, and other stores?
Updated August 17th, 2021 by Mark Sammut: Open-world games are naturally appealing, as they offer the possibility of experiencing almost endless fun in a sandbox designed for freedom. Over the last decade, the PC market has become flooded with open-world titles; naturally, some are better than others. As people wait for some concrete news on The Elder Scrolls 6 or Grand Theft Auto 6, they can pass the time by revisiting or experiencing for the first time some of the best open-world PC games of all time. Every year brings with it at least a couple of great additions to this genre, so this list will grow forever.
15/15 Cyberpunk 2077
While a controversial release on consoles, CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 fared much better on PC, although it still launched with its share of issues. Focusing solely on the positives, Cyberpunk 2077 offers a dense and exciting sandbox to explore, with Night City containing so many little touches that give it a sense of substance and realism. The story is strong, interesting, and expertly acted; it might not reach the heights of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt but few games do.
From Deus Ex to The Ascent, cyberpunk worlds are not unheard of in gaming, but Cyberpunk 2077 presents this setting at an unprecedented scale for the medium. Unsurprisingly for CD Projekt Red, the side quests are generally great, helping to breathe life into every corner and building in Night City.
14/15 Valheim
In early access, Valheim took the world by storm during the first few months of 2021. A sandbox game set in various biomes, Iron Gate Studio’s title challenges Vikings to survive and earn the right to enter Valhalla.
A freeing game with very little in the way of narrative, at least presently, Valheim provides the tools to build shelter, hunt animals, and defeat enemies. There is also the option to team up with other Vikings. Valheim is certainly a work in progress, but the game has a lot to offer in its current state.
13/15 Far Cry 5
Any of the last three main Far Cry games could have taken this spot, but the fifth entry gets the nod due to its recency and setting. Hope Country, which is inspired by Montana, is gorgeous but persistently deadly. It seems like barely a step can be taken in the game before stumbling on a group of Joseph Seed’s fanatics who will not hesitate to riddle the player with bullets.
With Far Cry 6 on the way, Far Cry 5 will soon be old news, so this is the perfect time to jump into its campaign. The FPS gameplay is satisfying, the open-world is fun to explore, and the characters are delightfully over-the-top.
12/15 Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
Kojima Productions took a different approach with the fifth main Metal Gear Solid game, opting for a large open-world that places a heavy emphasis on stealth. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain features the best gameplay in the franchise, presenting Venom Snake with a wide plethora of tactics and tools that he can use to infiltrate camps. The world impresses in terms of scale, even if it is not especially packed with content. Conversely, the isolation and barren landscape complement the story and almost give the game a Western feel.
RELATED: Metal Gear: Ways The Phantom Pain Makes No Sense If You Did Not Play Peace Walker
The Phantom Pain is quite different from its predecessors in the series, mainly due to the story taking a backseat to the gameplay; however, viewed on its own, this is one of the best open-world games on PC.
11/15 Genshin Impact
What started out as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild but with waifus has grown into an absolute phenomenon. With each new update, Genshin Impact proves that it deserves every ounce of recognition thrown its way, and the game is far from complete. Teyvat is a beautiful world soaked in lore, mysticism, and personality; there is just so much to do and see in this universe.
RELATED: Genshin Impact: Tips For Playing In Solo Mode
Be it the mesmerizing Guyun Stone Forest or the picturesque Wangshu Inn, Genshin Impact offers variety in its (gorgeous) locations, all of which combine to create a world that demands to be experienced.
10/15 Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
There are few adventure games as visually appealing as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Around every nook and corner is eye candy that manifests in the game’s breathtaking open-world. The game takes place in the years 431–422 BCE during an ongoing battle between Sparta and Athens.
Players choose between playing as protagonists Alexios or Kassandra. Whoever someone picks, they will wind up engaging on both sides of the conflict as they struggle to bring their family together.
9/15 Death Stranding
The best open-world games are some of the most cinematic in history. Director Hideo Kojima ensured that realism was a factor of the utmost importance when creating Death Stranding. There was a near-perfect recreation of Norman Reedus, who played Sam Porter Bridge in the game.
This story-intensive adventure proves that a game as expansive as Death Stranding can be engaging throughout. This game provides a unique experience, and it’s available on PC and PlayStation systems.
8/15 Fallout: New Vegas
It doesn’t contain the most beautiful open-world, yet Fallout: New Vegas proves that graphics aren’t everything. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic future, shortly after the events of Fallout 3. Set in a region formerly known as Las Vegas, this game is situated in New Vegas.
The RPG elements are masterful. As a game that is backward compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, Fallout: New Vegas is one game nobody should miss. Fans of The Outer Worlds should make sure to check out Obsidian’s Fallout: New Vegas as it might just be the studio’s crowning achievement.
7/15 Horizon Zero Dawn
Developer Guerilla Games ensured that significant detail was packed into Horizon Zero Dawn. The game is acclaimed for its open-world that is made up of different biomes. Horizon: Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds is the game’s only DLC, and it brings players to the Cut, a snowy region in the game north of Grave-Hoard.
RELATED: Offline RPGs On PC You Need To Play
Horizon Forbidden West has a good shot at beating its predecessor, but until then, players can marvel at the achievement that is Horizon Zero Dawn on PC.
6/15 Forza Horizon 4
RPGs and adventure titles often overshadow racing games, but they too can have scenic open-worlds. Forza Horizon 4 is the quintessential example of how to do an open-world racing game correctly. Although it’s more arcadey than the Forza Motorsport series, the gameplay emphasizes exploration in a breathtaking open-world set in and around Edinburgh in Scotland.
Forza Horizon 4 contains the most robust car lineup of any open-world racing game, although that might change with the upcoming release of Forza Horizon 5. Blending realistic visuals with accessible controls and a willingness to get goofy, Forza Horizon 4 is a masterpiece.
5/15 Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is arguably the best Assassin’s Creed game thus far. Players won’t be able to find Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on the Steam Store, unlike many other Assassin’s Creed games, but they can find the PC version on the Ubisoft Store.
The game takes over 50 hours to beat, according to howlongtobeat.com, but it will feel significantly shorter. The open-world of this game is expansive and immersive, matching scale with density. At times, there is almost too much to do in Valhalla.
4/15 Grand Theft Auto 5
Years after the game’s release, people are still finding reasons to return to Grand Theft Auto 5. Set in the massive State of San Andreas, the game contains perhaps the definitive modern open-world, one that builds upon the foundations of previous entries in Rockstar’s acclaimed franchise.
Los Santos is a fully realized sandbox, allowing GTA 5 to stand out as one of the most realistic open-world PC games to date. The view from the top of Mount Chiliad, the tallest peak in the game, is a sight to behold.
It wouldn’t be a complete open-world game discussion without the inclusion of an Elder Scrolls game. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim might not be the best game in the series for everyone, but it’s hard to deny the beautifulness of its world.
Skyrim’s snowy region is especially gorgeous in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition, an enhanced version with remastered art. Even if someone is new to the RPG genre,The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is a great place to start.
2/15 Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a masterclass in open-world design. The game takes place in 1899 in the Midwestern, Western, and Southern United States. The places in Red Dead Redemption 2 are fictional but loosely based on real locations.
RELATED: Red Dead Redemption 2: Things Arthur Morgan Can Do That John Marston Can’t
This game can be played in both the third-person and first-person, providing more freedom than other open-world games. Red Dead Redemption 2‘s attention to detail is remarkable, making it one of PC’s best open-world adventures.
1/15 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
In regards to open-world design, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt might be the most impressive. Technically, the game has a semi open-world since loading screens separate regions, however, each area is massive enough to be a game of its own.
Whether someone likes the quest-packed lands of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it’s hard to deny that it’s one of the proudest RPG accomplishments in years.

Elden Ring
FromSoftware fails to make «next» Dark Souls — their games have a hardcore combat system in common, but there is something special about them. Elden Ring features an open world with brilliant game design — gloomy castles, dark dungeons, a ghost town, unattractive swamps and a host of other places on the horizon are available to visit, and in them, most likely, many hours of adventure await.
