Rome: Total War is the third part of the famous series of strategy created by the Creative Assembly team. Predecessor (Shogun: Total War, Medieval: Total War) offered us the game in the sixteenth century Japan and medieval Europe, this time developers propose us a journey into the distant past, IE. flowering times and reign of the Roman Empire. We participate in the known history and exciting events at the same time as the emergence of the slaves, led by Spartacus, Punic Wars (wars of Rome from Carthage for control of the western part of the Mediterranean basin) in the famous March of Hannibal over the Alps and fights in the same Italy, or the final destruction of the Gauls by Julius Caesar.

Note: Rome: Total War Demo contains the training mission (tutorial), which acquaint themselves with games and rules governing on a virtual battlefield. In addition to this we get a playable mission, in which we will fight on the banks of the river Trebia on the side of the Carthaginians, in which Hannibal with fewer soldiers asked the crushing defeat the Romans in 218 BC.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do

1/3

Rome Total War takes you back in time and fastens you into the shoes of a top general of any army you could dream of.

Lead the charge

In this game, you have to make sure you have the proper provisions for your army before you can command them to attack your foes.

Commanding expansive armies in glorious battle sounds great. However, it’s not as easy as it sounds. A lot of gears turn behind each fight. Also, as a leader, you have to give your troops a reason to fight and motivate them. Don’t hesitate, because the more you stall, the better prepared your enemies will be.

Rome Total War does an amazing job at giving conflicts between warring nations a unique feeling. The top-down third-person view of the soldiers on the field feels just right. Giving commands and watching them executed feels so satisfying. Apart from having proper execution, there are plenty of delicious visuals.

A great feature included in this title is the huge variety of civilizations to choose from. Sure, the name of the game might have you thinking that Rome is the protagonist of this story. But, you’d be wrong to think so. The real protagonist here is you! Yes, the historical accuracy with the names of specific soldiers and cities is great. But, Rome Total War lets you rewrite history through your victories and losses on the battlefield.

Where can you run this program?

This title runs on most Windows and iOS computers. Sadly, it was never made available for consoles.

Is there a better alternative?

No! Rome Total War has no competition, whatsoever. Other titles that try, and fail, to do something similar include Crusader Kings 2 and Imperial Glory.

Our take

Rome Total War manages to create an elegant dance between strategy and fun. No tedious tasks here, only enjoyment.

Should you download it?

Absolutely! If you have a thirst for war, there’s no better way to satiate it than on the battlefield with your favorite army!

Total War: WARHAMMER

Fantasy? Finally!

Release date: May 24, 2016
We waited, we believed. And our faith was rewarded! Announcement of Total War: WARHAMMER took place! The skeptics were put to shame, but the Wahomans rejoiced! The developers have already managed to tell a lot of details. Did you know first? that this will not be one game, but a trilogy flavored with a whole bunch of add-ons and additional paid and free content. Secondly, there will be only 5 + 1 factions (Empire of Sigmar, Greenskins, Dwarves, Vampire Counts and Chaos Warriors + Bretonnia in custom and multiplayer battles), but they promise to make them as elaborate as possible, rich in units and really different from each other in terms of gameplay. Thirdly, the heads of factions are now not just generals who are not a pity to lose in battle. Now these are Legendary Lords (Karl Franz, Grimgor, Thorgrim and Mannfred von Carstein and others), heroes with unique weapons, mounts, gear and a set of quests. They also promise such novelties as flying units, magic, tanks, cannons and muskets … in general, yummy! In general, we are waiting for more information and hope that the game will be a breakthrough in the series.

Total War: Rome 2

and again Antiquity + Marine battles

September 3, 2013

Rome II July and it caused a real storm of delight in our community! So people yearned for hand-to-hand combat and legionnaires that the announcement of the sequel was perceived as a real miracle and a «dream come true.» To again lead the legions bound by iron discipline, unshakable Greek hoplites and Macedonian sarissophores into battle, trample enemies with elephants and throw severed heads — is this not happiness! But the new Total War games are also naval battles. And here there will be a lot of fun, because the developers promise active interaction between the ground and naval forces. Mutual shelling between coastal fortifications and warships in the roadstead will give a new degree of freedom to the «strategos» of the ancient world.

Napoleon: Total War

when he came to the field

Release date: 2010 The sixth game53. As the name implies, the player will have to try on the cocked hat of the most famous commander of the New Age. The time frame is the end of the 18th beginning of the 19th century. Now one turn on the strategic map has been shortened to two weeks. The game has a cross-cutting story, divided into three campaigns — Italy, the Middle East and Europe. The player’s choice of factions is small: France, the British Empire, the Austrian Empire, the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia, but the developers vow to compensate for this with a richness of events. After all, now the generals in the game are not abstract figures, but real historical figures, including the great Bonaparte himself. Nine reconstructed battles of this historical era, the introduction of strategic multiplayer into the game, make it one of the most interesting games in the series.

Medieval 2: Total War

Indian Crusade

Release Date: 2006. 9005 in 2006 in 2006 in 2006 in the Middle Ages and Totar Middle Ages. The fourth game in the series is set in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The passage of the campaign is extended in time — from 1080 to 1530 and ends in the Age of Discovery, while Central America with the Aztec Empire becomes available. True, before inventing gunpowder, discovering the New World and starting to sow reasonable, kind, eternal Indians mired in sin, the player will have to bring the cross to the world of Islam (or vice versa), survive the invasion of the Mongols and Timurids and glorify their faction (they are here, as in previous game, twenty-one). Wealthy cities and fortified castles, thousands of battles and expensive, but even more valuable victories — this and much more in the best medieval «war simulator» to date. 95 to 1453 — from the First Crusade to the capture of Constantinople by the Turks. There are twelve faction-states in the game, divided into three groups: Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims, while each faction’s buildings and units reflect its national characteristics. Mercenaries and fortress sieges appeared in the game. The generals here are personalities with unique characteristics, and the warriors participating in the battles are by no means a faceless crowd blindly going to certain death…

Total War: Attila

barbarian invasion II

Release date: February 17, 2015 walks the beaten track. After all, Attila is essentially a sequel to the «Invasion of the Barbarians» addon for Rome 1. True, this time they did not become modest and called it a «new game». Okay, we won’t argue. A separate game about the invasion of barbarian tribes on the civilizations of the ancient world is wonderful. It should be noted that the developers really did a great job. According to most players, Attila really turned out to be a worthy product that allowed them to plunge into the dark era.

Shogun: Total War

Release date: 2000
Japan. In order to become a shogun, the player must unite under his hand the warring clans Shimazu, Mori, Oda, Imagawa, Takeda Hojo and Uesugi. The action of the game begins in 1530. A wooden table with a map unfolded on it, four moves per year — this is how the strategic part of the game looks like. Money here replaces rice. Trade, diplomacy, urban development — everything is subordinated to the main goal: to gather and train a strong army capable of defeating a computer opponent. After all, victory here is obtained not in the silence of the family castle, but on the battlefield, where thousands of armies meet.

Total War: Shogun 2

Release date: 2011
The seventh game in the series, which was officially announced in the spring of 2010. The game returned to the origins of the series — swords and armor, abandoning gunpowder and cannons. The game is a direct continuation of the first game in the series Shogun: Total War, so loved by many. The developers decided to apply ten years of experience on the new game, adding and improving it, making it exactly the way they wanted it to be from the very beginning, then, ten years ago. We return to feudal-fragmented Japan, the Sengoku Period. Nine rival clans battle each other for dominance over Japanese lands. Each faction has its own unique features and abilities. You can become the head of one of these clans to conquer as many provinces as possible and get the right to be called the Shogun of Japan from the Emperor. The game does not have as much geographical scope as previous projects in the series, but this allows developers to concentrate on details, to show this unique culture and country in all its glory and grandeur. The game really became the most picturesque and exciting in the series.

Empire: Total War

Release date: 2009
The fifth game in the series was released three years after the previous one. The historical framework, compared with its predecessors, is very narrowed — only from 1700 to 1799. But over these hundred years, the player will have to go through a difficult path of victories and defeats, taking part in the next redistribution of the world — the era of colonial wars. Now the game involves full three continents — Europe, Asia and America, which tear each other, striving for world domination. The game is as close as possible to the realities of the eighteenth century — the lines of units of different nations here do not have striking differences, so tactical art comes to the fore. And here the developers have done the impossible, because the artificial intelligence of huge armies — from soldiers to generals is very high. And now it is difficult to wrest victory from the hands of a computer enemy, fighting only by numbers. The main difference between the «empire» and its predecessors is naval tactical battles.

Rome: Total War

Release date: 2004
In 2004, Total War entered the third dimension. Now the strategic map is not a field for chips, but a full-fledged land from a bird’s eye view: with rivers, seas, forests, the change of seasons and detachments walking along the roads. Continuing to roll back on the timeline, the developers have dedicated their new project to the brilliant Roman Republic — from 270 BC to 270 BC. e. (the transformation of Rome into a world power) until 14 AD. e. (death of Octavian Augustus). Leading one of the 21 factions, the player will have to conquer 50 provinces and conquer Rome. Here the economy is in the background — war, war and war! No desire to go through long multi-year campaigns? You can play individual battles — both historical and random. Historicity is guaranteed — after all, this is the engine used in their documentaries History Channel and BBC!

Best Ancient Rome games on PC 🔱

The mighty ancient state of Rome and its history constantly inspire developers to create computer games. We have prepared for you a list of worthy games about Ancient Rome on PC.

Ancient Rome — an ancient empire that occupied half of Eurasia and gave the world politics, baths, gladiator fights, running water, paved roads and many other important benefits that we know about, but often do not suspect where they came from. Millennia later, gamers can go back in time and take on the role of a Roman warrior, commander, mayor, general, or even emperor. That’s what our favorite games are capable of.

RomeWar

RomeWar is an old, but still working browser-based online RPG with a touch of strategy. The player will have to start life from scratch on the hostile streets of Rome and determine his role — he can become a local Spartacus and lead an army of gladiators, engage in trade, join legions, complete quests and pay attention to other things.

The graphics, of course, leave much to be desired, but this game appeared back in 2006, and the developers are still releasing updates for it. You understand that bad projects don’t live that long.

Play

Travian and Travian Kingdoms

The Travian and Travian Kingdoms series of games is a browser-based strategy game in a pleasant cartoon style, created by the German studio Travian Games GmbH. The player chooses one of the four nations (Romans, Gauls, Germans and Natars) and receives a small plot of land in possession. On this miserable piece of land, you first need to build and develop a settlement, organize the extraction of resources, start an army and strengthen its power, and then take on the expansion of borders and world trade.

Games in this series are distinguished by the leisurely course of the competition — the full stage of the game on the server lasts 11 months and only then the score is reset, and gamers start again. Since 2011, the Travian Championship has been held in Europe, which means that Travian is not just an economic strategy, but a real esports discipline. In addition, you can download it absolutely free and start playing right now.

I, Gladiator

I, Gladiator is an indie action game on PC by Steel Monkeys. As you guessed from the title, the gamer takes on the role of a gladiator during the Roman Empire. The project is made in a brutal cartoon style and is absolutely not demanding on the system, so it runs even on ancient hardware.

It is not at all easy to win battles and stay alive here: for this you need not only to swing your weapons in different directions, but also to notice the enemy’s weak points, competently use the environment and features of the arenas where the battles take place.

Europa Universalis: Rome

Ten years ago, Paradox Interactive introduced Europa Universalis: Rome, a global strategy wargame set in Ancient Rome. The project became the first game in the history of the company dedicated to the ancient period. For 2008, Europa Universalis: Rome received a decent picture, addictive gameplay and an epic, complex plot that touches on 250 years of ancient Rome’s history.

Among the features of the project are a developed system of characters, well-developed trade between regions, the ability to start a civil war and the emergence of barbarians who are able to create their own state on the occupied lands.

Total War: Attila

Another cool and iconic game about Ancient Rome is Total War: Attila, a military strategy game released by Creative Assembly. The plot of the project begins in 395, when the Roman Empire split into western and eastern parts. The main plot character is the legendary leader of the Hun tribe Attila. As you understand, the game was named after him, and the main story tells about Attila’s opposition to the Romans, as well as other powerful nomadic tribes and nationalities.

In addition to the main features of the Total War series, Attila received changes in the gameplay. So epidemics and diseases were added to the game. With an inattentive attitude to sanitation, the infection will catch the army and spread through the cities, which will lead to significant losses throughout the territory controlled by the gamer. Total War: Attila will appeal to those who are close not to the golden gloss of the Roman Empire, but to the dirty, cruel time of the beginning of our era, when nomadic tribes actively moved around Europe and established their own order, and sometimes destroyed more advanced kingdoms.

Rome: Total War 1 and 2

The British studio Creative Assembly is also responsible for the development of two strategies in the world of Ancient Rome: the 2004 game Rome: Total War and its sequel, as well as the Rome: Total War 2 remake, which came out in 2013.

Each of the mentioned projects at one time showed excellent graphics, a huge amount of content, a well-developed combat system and a hefty global map on which you can wage a long, exhausting war. In addition to classic land battles, gamers have access to naval battles, political intrigues, spies, hundreds of units, sophisticated and improved artificial intelligence, and a bunch of other innovations. And if the first part of some is in doubt, then Rome: Total War 2 can be called without a twinge of conscience one of the best games about Ancient Rome.

Ryse: Son of Rome

In 2013, the famous German studio Crytek released one of the first games for the then new Xbox One console. The project is called Ryse: Son of Rome, it received mixed reviews from critics and is considered a failure, but it is still a decent game about Ancient Rome.

The project is characterized by weak gameplay, but pleases with excellent and detailed graphics, epic scope of the events, beautiful dismemberment, as well as deep immersion into the world of ancient antiquity. Fights are forgotten here and you just want to admire the world around you and wander around the famous places of the empire.

Alea Jacta Est

In this turn-based wargame, the player controls troops during the civil wars in the Roman Empire (1st century BC-3rd century AD). Assuming the position of military and political leader, players will fight for control of Rome and its provinces.

Under your command will be not only land, but also naval forces. Moreover, the army command model pleases with historical accuracy, and different scenarios, including real historical events, save you from monotonous gameplay.

Imperium Romanum

In 2008, the Bulgarian company Haemimont Games released an economic strategy and city-building simulation called Imperium Romanum. If you are going to play this project, then immediately get ready for the responsible role of the Roman mayor. The player’s task is to build a large, economically developed, beautiful and formidable ancient Roman city. But it will not be easy to do this: at first, the gamer has critically few resources, gold, people and troops, but with skillful initial development, money, residents and troops will begin to flow into the hands of the mayor, that is, you.

The game also has an army in the form of archers, hastati and cavalry to sometimes defend the expanding territory of the city by force. Gamers complain about its limitations and stupid AI of opponents, but Imperium Romanum still pleases with a nice picture and is seriously appreciated among fans of economic strategies.

Caesar Series

Caesar Series are 4 iconic economic strategy and city builder games released by Impressions Games and Tilted Mill Entertainment. The series includes Caesar projects (1992), Caesar II (1995), Caesar III (1998) and Caesar IV (2006).

As always in this genre, the gamer’s task is to turn a poor small village into an advanced, rich and powerful city of the ancient world. The player will have to listen to the requests of residents, monitor the development of infrastructure, provide gold to the city treasury, and do many other important things for the city. As the title suggests, the game takes place during the reign of the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar.

Caesar III Caesar IV

Grand Ages Rome

Another city builder on our list is Grand Ages Rome. The game was released by Haemimont Games in 2009 and, in addition to the simulation, also contains real-time strategy elements. As in other similar projects, in addition to peaceful development and thinking over economic policy, the gamer is free to participate in military campaigns and increase possessions with the help of wars of conquest.

The game features a twisted plot with non-linear missions, a developed army consisting of 16 divisions, as well as an original economic and trade system. The decoration of Grand Ages Rome is the graphics: the project still pleases the eye of even picky players and is considered one of the most beautiful city-building simulators about Ancient Rome and in general.

CivCity: Rome

2006 was marked by the release of the city-building simulator and economic strategy CivCity: Rome. The game was developed by three eminent studios at once: Firefly Studios, Firaxis Games and 2K Games, and its events take place in the setting of Ancient Rome. The player takes on the role of the manager of a small settlement, whose task is to develop and prosper, so that even the citizens of Rome envy the locals.

In addition, the gamer will have to complete specific missions to build a wonder of the world, achieve the well-being of citizens, and so on. Fans of battles won’t be bored either: missions in CivCity: Rome can also be military. Here you need to fortify your city and repel enemy sieges.

Age of Gladiators Series

The people of Rome have always wanted bread and circuses, and their favorite show is, of course, gladiator fights. But being a gladiator is an unenviable fate, although some lucky ones could, thanks to their skill, become free and very wealthy people. The player also has to become a gladiator manager, which is much safer and more financially profitable.

Hire new fighters, upgrade their characteristics to your liking, choose equipment for each and send them to fight in the name of your enrichment. By betting on the outcome of fights, you can make good money and develop your business.

Shieldwall

A combat simulator in which the player is assigned the role of a commander of a small squad. He will have to plunge into the era of Caesar’s battles and lead the Romans to a total victory over the Gauls. The gamer controls one character, but at the same time he can issue orders to his subordinates (send to attack, raise shields, use ranged weapons, and so on).

The game constantly throws up various challenges. For example, mission objectives might include capturing points, besieging an enemy castle, or defending one’s own. Shieldwall’s strengths also include the visuals and design of the soldiers.

Imperator: Rome

A grand strategy from Paradox, which gave the world Europa Universalis IV, Stellaris, Hearts of Iron IV. This time, Paradox invites players to relive the history of Rome from the conquests of Alexander the Great to the fall of the Empire. Leading the Romans, the gamer will expand the country’s borders, solve internal affairs, get acquainted with prominent personalities of that era, engage in trade, and so on.

In the history of the Roman Empire, there are both negative moments (betrayals, conspiracies, attacks from distant lands) and positive ones (the flourishing of culture, economy, religion), and users will be able to experience them to the fullest.

Domina

Domina is a gladiator school simulator in which the player has to hire warriors and upgrade them for battles. A victory will bring monetary gain and improve the prestige of the gamer’s house, while a defeat will lead to the fact that everything will have to be started anew.

The battles in the game are varied: there are duels, chariot races, group battles, fights against predators

Domina would be boring if it didn’t offer anything other than gladiator fights. In addition to battles, the player will take part in political «races». For example, you can win the location of the «top» and increase the chance of winning.

Field of Glory Series

In the Field of Glory strategy series, you’ll find out what it’s like to rule an entire Empire. Starting from a small city, you will expand your influence by building new buildings, forming provinces, trading and, of course, capturing enemy lands. True, a series of mistakes can lead to the fact that the Empire will disappear forever, as happened with Rome.

Field of Glory are great games in our selection that fans of the genre will love. But there is a fat minus — the second part is directly related to Empire (unofficially the third). In Field of Glory 2, tactical battles are perfectly implemented, which is not the case in Empire (here they are fully automatic). And the developers acted in a tricky way — they offered to upload battles from Empire to the second part. You can break your head trying to delve into these intricacies!

Ludus

First-person gladiator school simulator. You will be engaged in hiring fragile slaves who need to be trained and prepared for bloody battles in the arena. You will not personally take part in them — only observe the fruits of your work.

The player is responsible for such tasks as buying new swords and armor, training soldiers, trading, creating a comfortable working environment for his charges. You can walk around the school and see how the future great warriors, whom you will sell for fabulous money, bludgeon wooden mannequins or each other.

Praetorians

An old time-tested strategy that invites you to plunge into the era of prosperity of Julius Caesar. The path of the emperor to the throne is full of bloody battles, and it is in them that you will take part in the Praetorians. You have to manage an entire army (individual units and detachments) and defeat enemies from Gaul, Italy and Ancient Egypt. Each unit has its own characteristics, and tactics are important in battle — units can be combined, ambushes can be set up in battle, and so on.

An HD remaster of Praetorians was released in 2020 with modern graphics and multiplayer mode. And no matter how strong virtual enemies are, battles with real gamers are much more interesting.

PraetoriansPraetorians — HD Remaster

Formata

Simulation of ancient Roman battles in which, like in Shieldwall, the player will lead an entire army into battle. But this game is different in scale — there are much more warriors, and the location of the detachment and the correctly chosen combat formation play an important role. You can enlist the support of infantry, archers and other units. It is not necessary to personally participate in the battle — a strategic bird’s eye view is available and with the ability to control units.

The battles are varied — there are both classic wall-to-wall skirmishes, as well as castle sieges, various scenarios (for example, battles in the gorge, as in the movie «300 Spartans»).

Qvadriga

Qvadriga is a strategy, but much less global than other candidates in the selection. In ancient Rome, people from the stands of the Colosseum watched with bated breath not only gladiator fights, but also chariot races. They formed the basis of Qvadriga — the player will have to take part in circuit races and try to reach the finish line first. Or at least unharmed.

In racing, it is not forbidden to push opponents off the road, cut horses, spin wheels, and perform other sabotage actions. Obviously, the gamer should expect that his rivals will take the same measures.

The Age of Decadence

An unusual game in our selection that can be described as an ancient Roman S.T.A.L.K.E.R. According to the plot of this isometric RPG, Rome is plunged into a post-apocalyptic state after raids from neighboring lands. The remaining houses squabble for power, and the proletarians are forced to fight for survival on the empty streets.

The Age of Decadence has elements of fantasy (magic, monsters)

The player will take on the role of a character that can be associated with an «empty place» and create their own story by completing quests, traveling through locations and fighting against numerous enemies . You can become a brave gladiator, a senator, a bandit, a vagabond … yes, anyone! The gameplay is very diverse, and the variability is impressive.

Last Day of Rome is a mixture of global strategy and card game. The insatiable Roman Empire seizes one piece of land after another, but you have to unite the affected peoples under your command and challenge a strong army.

The gameplay can be conditionally divided into three parts. The first is the solution of cases on the global map. The second is the construction of buildings in their possessions. The game boasts a faithful map of the ancient world and an authentic representation of the units of the time, the influence of the changing seasons on the gameplay and quick-witted AI that can challenge homegrown strategists. Small and unprepossessing, Roma Invicta is nevertheless very soulful and atmospheric, and deserves your attention.
