Three approaches to organizing competitions between players — Offtop on vc.

ru

Strong multiplayer gameplay is defining
success factor for any free-to-play game. This success is due to two obvious reasons:

  1. Multiplayer always has a place for uncertainty: you can’t predict how the other player will behave, and that makes the game interesting. It is this uncertainty that allows you to enjoy the game, despite the limited content. And if in a single player game the developer is forced to spend many months on content production, then in a multiplayer game he has only a fraction of such work. nine0008
  2. Multiplayer games are much more effective in terms of player engagement because users enjoy being in a community of real people. The players themselves build acceptable norms of communication, the very need to interact with real people pushes them to this.

However, creating truly social multiplayer gameplay on a mobile device is by no means easy. This already difficult design task is further complicated by the well-known limitations of mobile platforms: small screens, short sessions, and unstable connections.
nine0003

Because of these issues, there have been no truly successful and fully synchronized multiplayer games on mobile platforms so far, with the exception of a few key examples: Hearthstone, 8-ball Pool and World of Tanks. Even playing Hearthstone, the game that has been most adapted to mobile devices, I have to be extremely focused, and besides, I can not leave the game at any time. I ran into trouble a few times, getting stuck in Hearthstone just when real life needed my attention.
nine0003

I am convinced that the development of video games will move (albeit not too fast) towards fully synchronous multiplayer, and talented developers will learn to create its advantages (such as social gameplay and repeatable content) for systems more adapted to mobile restrictions.

This article explores three key techniques that today’s developers use when creating multiplayer games for mobile devices.

Fake Synchronicity

Many free-to-play games create the feeling of synchronous play without actually providing it. Instead of a real opponent, the player interacts with the bot. The developers of such games believe that players are not able to feel the difference between a live player and a bot. But it can be done, albeit with difficulty.

As an example, I will give the game Contest of Champions from Kabam. While the game has the feel of being multiplayer, each player is actually fighting a bot. Thus, the developers got rid of the problems associated with the synchronization of the fighting game with an intermittent Internet connection.
nine0003

In the game CSR Racing, something similar happens: you compete on the track with either a phantom of a real player or a bot. The gameplay is arranged in such a way that the player cannot influence the speed of his partner in any way. Therefore, the difference between a living person and a bot is not very noticeable.

Of course, this is nothing compared to the possibilities of synchronous multiplayer. The developers of Real Racing 3 tried to fix this: they use another player’s saved race record, and you are actually competing with his phantom. During the race, you can crash into the opponent’s car or push him off the track, but he miraculously returns to the place where his prototype was at that time of the race. And yet you have come a little closer to synchronous play.
nine0003

In general, this approach allows you to simulate the simplest interaction between players, solves the problem of an unstable connection, and even engages the player (if the session does not last long). However, in this game there is no feeling that you are playing with a live player.

Simultaneous multiplayer

The second approach is used only by some of the mobile games. It was first used in browser games and fantasy sports games in the late 90s and early 2000s (examples of such games are
Travian and Hat-Trick).
nine0003

In simultaneous multiplayer, players are asked to prepare their strategies in advance, and then a pair of such strategies are played at the same time. This way, players make their choices before it’s their turn to play, and they don’t have to be online at the same time to interact and compete with each other.

Top Eleven by Nordeus is one of the few that uses this system. Her matches are held at a strictly set time. Each player determines the tactics, strategy and placement of his team in advance, and then waits for the start of his match. The game starts regardless of whether the players are active or not.
nine0003

The good thing about this approach is that it provides a natural immersion into the gameplay:

  • Players feel that they are being treated fairly, since each of them can perform an equal number of actions per day.
  • Session design is tied to scheduled times and players get used to the constant rhythm of the game.

However, using this method can lead to many problems: in such a system it is very difficult to ensure monetization and not turn a free-to-play game into pay-to-win. Every day, all players perform the same number of actions. If those who pay will perform more actions or get some other advantage, their rivals will immediately feel it. In this case, the correct selection of pairs of players becomes very important.
nine0021

The design of the sessions in the game is quite limited. Once you’ve decided on a strategy, you don’t actually have anything to do until the next match. It is not easy for designers to decide on the schedule of matches: if the games are too frequent, the players will become nervous, and if they are too rare, they will get bored. The problem with this system is that it is too regimented and not flexible enough (especially for players who miss their turn or want to play more often).

Asymmetric and asynchronous multiplayer
nine0022

The most popular way to create a multiplayer game on a mobile device is based on asynchronous multiplayer.

Games like Words with Friends or Draw Something have fully asynchronous multiplayer. All players take turns playing and then wait for their friends to finish the game. While this is inherently engaging, most games that embrace this asynchronous style have failed when they hit the mobile market. In addition, the session design limits monetization mainly due to the difficulty in pairing (read our articles on
destruction of energy and construction of social mechanics).
nine0003

However, asynchrony does not have to be built in this way. Similar games can be
asymmetric and asynchronous .

Asymmetric asynchronous games divide the player’s attention between two types of gameplay — active and passive, and each of them should be as engaging as possible. Active players are involved in one kind of gameplay (attacking gameplay) and inactive players in another kind of gameplay (defensive gameplay). This is exactly the mechanics implemented in Clash of Clans, Rage of Bahamut and Theives games.
nine0003

The key to the success of these games is well-balanced addictive gameplay of both types. After all, it is really difficult for players to break apart: on the one hand, they are forced to play a defensive game in order to protect their resources from the encroachments of rivals, on the other hand, they must participate in an attacking game in order to accumulate these resources in time and ensure their progress.

Until recently, asymmetric mobile games supported the Clash of Clans (attack vs. defense) style. There have been occasional attempts to get away from this formula, such as in Zombination, where the player can choose whether to focus on offense (zombies) or defense (humans). But the system has huge potential for other games to emerge, such as applying the passive versus active formula to new genres and new gameplay. So far the best example I’ve seen is
King of Thieves.
nine0003

Conclusion

There are several types of multiplayer games for mobile devices.

  • You can create fully synchronous gameplay (as in World of Tanks or Hearthstone), but this is fraught with problems with session length and critical mass.
  • You can create a completely asynchronous gameplay (like in Words with Friends), but again there will be issues with critical mass, player passivity and session continuation. nine0008
  • You can create leaderboards or organize competitions, but if you want to have a truly successful social multiplayer, you have to tie it into your core gameplay.

The challenge lies in balancing the benefits of synchronous multiplayer with the limitations of mobile devices.

There are three ways to build multiplayer for a mobile device:

  1. counterfeit synchronicity; nine0008
  2. simultaneous multiplayer;
  3. asymmetric asynchronous multiplayer game.

Each of these methods allows you to create a strong session design, work with the limitations of mobile devices and give the player the feeling of being in a vibrant community. Each method has its drawbacks and its unique features.

How to play local multiplayer games online on Steam

nine0108

The gaming industry has been undergoing changes in recent years, although perhaps not as revolutionary as it was, say, 10 years ago. In the early 2000s, LAN games were popular. By switching computers between themselves, a peer-to-peer network was organized, IP addresses were assigned, then they were registered in the game configuration settings, after which it was possible to safely select the «MultiPlayer» mode.

The first multiplayer game is considered to be the now unknown game Tennis for two «Tennis for Two» 1958 years old. The game was developed for analog computers, for which at that time there were no screens in the current sense, and therefore it was necessary to play on the playing field drawn with an oscilloscope beam.

Network multiplayer games started a little later, namely in 1973. At this time, the games Maze War, Empire and Spasim are being created. Maze War was a 3D first-person shooter with multiplayer Deathmatch mode. Empire was a non-3D multiplayer online shooting game for up to 50 players. Finally, Spasim was the first multiplayer online 3D space simulator for 32 players. nine0003

Already the first consoles (Pong, Magnavox Odyssey) had two controllers, which allowed playing together.

Multiplayer games: technical implementation

Multiplayer game on one computer

In this mode, players participate in the game at the same time. In sports simulations, this is the natural mode. In racing — the screen is divided in half (splitscreen mode). Players can participate in the game in turn (used as a rule in turn-based strategies, for example, Heroes of Might and Magic. Formula 1 Grand Prix 2, 3 and 4 simulators also have a turn-based game mode, when one player drives his car, and the cars of the others the computer controls, with several times during the race, control is transferred from one player to another.Another option is the scheme of one computer — several terminals. It is used mainly in slot machines.

Network game — several computers connected in a computer network

Options:

    • Via serial or parallel ports
    • Via modem
    • Via LAN and Internet, via TCP/IP protocols
    • Online games
      • Via own client: Ultima Online, Allods Online
      • Browser games: Tale, Fight Club, Magic, Livegames. nine0008
    • Via Bluetooth, IrDA, SMS (mobile phone games).

Some games (mainly for game consoles) support online play, in which multiple players can play splitscreen on each machine.

Mass online games

A networked computer game played simultaneously by a large number of players, usually with the ability to interact with each other in some way. nine0003

Online games are divided into two large types:

  • Playing first-person shooter, car simulator and other games with the ability to find a partner on the Internet (this does not include chess, poker, etc.).
  • An online world is a game in which a large number of characters exist in one virtual world:

    • MMORPG is a massively multiplayer role-playing game.
    • MMOFPS is a massively multiplayer 3D shooter.
    • MMORTS is a massively multiplayer real-time strategy game. nine0008
    • MMORG (Massively Multiplayer Online Racing Game) is a Massively Multiplayer Online Racing Game.
    • Massive strategy games (both military and economic).
    • Bulk quizzes.

Note that in many modern MMOFPS there is an RPG component — the player can improve various characteristics of his character, unlock new weapons and equipment, and learn skills.

How to play games online with friends on Steam

In order to start the game, you will need to use the Steam Remote Play Together feature, which allows Steam users to play online. However, before we get started, let’s clarify some nuances.

What are local multiplayer games?

Before delving into the features of the Remote Play Together mode, let’s clarify a couple of points. Playing local multiplayer games is not the same as playing on a local network. nine0003

Local multiplayer games involve the use of a licensed copy of the program on computers connected to a local network. Local multiplayer, on the other hand, requires only one computer to play the game. Local multiplayer games also often use multiple game controllers (gamepads) to play together.

For example, a group of four people playing a home console on different controllers is considered a local multiplayer game. A group of people on multiple computers playing together over a local network does not count as local multiplayer. nine0003

What is Steam Remote Play Together?

The «Steam Remote Play Together» service allows you to play local multiplayer games online. You will still have one play space and one copy of the game, but you won’t be limited to your own room.

If you’ve ever had problems with not being able to play with your friends, then this feature may help you. Important! The game must be purchased and installed before invitations are sent out to other participants. invite others to play. nine0003

So, the purchase is made, now your friends on Steam have the opportunity to join you for joint games. The options are many: local multiplayer, split screen, and more. Four players (or more) can instantly join your game. Once they have joined, they have the option to use their own controllers or share their keyboard and mouse.

Possible problems

Let’s immediately reassure those who care about privacy. Your screen will not be visible to your rivals, no one will have access to your desktop or operating system.

You, as the initiator of the game, have the ability to set access levels for users. In particular, it is possible to disable mouse, keyboard or gamepad support.

If you play on different devices, it will be useful to know that Steam supports cross-platform incl. Windows, macOS and Linux. Remote Play Together aims to make group gaming as flexible as possible while protecting the initiator of the game from outside influence. nine0003

How to update your Steam Client to beta version

Remote Play Together is currently in Beta , so to access Remote Play Together you need to update the Steam client app to get the new features. With Steam open, go to Steam > Settings > Account > Beta Participation > Edit. From the «Beta Participation» menu, select «Steam Beta Update» from the drop-down menu. You can then choose «OK» to close the window. nine0003

After that, you will see a warning that Steam needs to be restarted for the changes to take effect. Then you need to download a small update. After the update, your Steam client will restart as a new beta client.

How to use remote play together

Now you can try to create a joint game session with your friends To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Launch a Steam game from the list of supported games.
  2. After entering the game, press Shift and Tab to open the «Steam Overlay» item.
  3. Click the arrow next to the name of the friend you want to play with.
  4. Select Remote Play Together.
  5. At this point, you may receive an error message, and you may need to install additional drivers in order to run co-op. Follow the instructions on the Steam screen to do so. nine0008
  6. Make sure your friend has accepted your invitation . You will receive notification on the screen as soon as your friend agrees.
  7. Repeat the process to invite the remaining friends (if applicable).
  8. After all the desired players have joined, press Shift and Tab to view the remote play settings. You can enable or disable access to manipulators: mouse, keyboard or gamepad. You can also adjust the volume of the connected player. nine0008
  9. You can play.

Since Remote Play Together is in beta, you may experience connection problems or lag (depending on the quality of your internet connection). Valve promises to work on improving the stability of network and hardware support across devices. If you’re having trouble with chat, consider Valve’s Steam Chat mobile app.

Games you can play remotely together now

Steam offers over 4,000 supported games for you to experiment with right from the start. Among them, there are several popular games that are worth a try.

Left 4 Dead 2

One of the classic Valve games can be used to test Remote Play Together features

Risk of Rain

Risk of Rain supports multiplayer up to 4 players. The system can take over part of the computing load, thereby reducing the requirements for the speed of the Internet connection. nine0003

Cuphead

Not the easiest game, but it makes sense to try it

Enter the Gungeon
