More Than Just Another Gaming Keyboard

Following up our recent review of the ROCCAT Kone[+] gaming mouse, today we’ll be reviewing another one of ROCCAT’s most popular products, the ROCCAT Isku gaming keyboard. With the mechanical keyboard craze that’s going on lately, it’s not everyday that we get to review a non-mechanical keyboard, but with the Isku, ROCCAT has opted for the more common non-mechanical membrane switches. Despite this lack of mechanical switches, the ROCCAT Isku is still very competitive with just the sheer amount of features they’ve thrown in at the sub-$70 price point.

Will the ROCCAT be roasted in the heated war of gaming planks or will it do the roasting? Read on to find out.

[section label=2. A Closer Look]

A Closer Look at the ROCCAT Isku

Here’s a look at the box for the ROCCAT Isku. Overall a nice looking box with a very futuristic theme. Very fitting for a product with so many advanced features onboard.

Included with the keyboard is a driver disk, a quick installation guide, and a ROCCAT ID card. The card has a number on the back which you can use to gain access to “exclusive content” from ROCCAT’s product registrations page.

There are 5 macro buttons on the left edge of the keyboard which are all back lit. If you look closely at this shot you can see that the caps lock key has been replaced by ROCCAT’s EasyShift key which can be combined with the macro keys to gain access another set of macros within the same bank.

Here we have the bank selection LEDs. As you can see, there are 5 banks in total. Macro keys can also be recorded on the fly with the macro record button next to the bank LEDs.

Above the function keys is a set of media control keys with a “launch browser key” and a “My Computer” key next to them. Unfortunately, they are not back lit like the rest of the keyboard and may be a little hard to reach if you plan on having it sit on a slide out keyboard tray from under your table.

The backlight adjust button is located right above the scroll lock. The key illumination LEDs can only glow blue and has 5 adjustable intensities. The Isku also supports the ROCCAT talk capability. More on that later.

The huge wrist rest is a nice touch. It’s crafted out of sturdy plastic with a grippy matte finish with a massive ROCCAT logo. The 3 buttons below the space bar are for profile cycling which can also be programmed to your liking. The entire bezel around the keys are surrounded by glossy plastic.

As expected, the Isku also includes a USB connector for the keyboard. The cable is not braided and measures 2m long.

The back of the keyboard is made of very durable matte plastic. There are large rubber feet on the four corners.

ROCCAT added another strip of rubber under the palm rest area to further increase traction.

The elevating stands flip out like any other keyboard, and does not have rubberized padding at the tip. I don’t think this is going to pose any sliding problem though, since the weight of the keyboard will be focused on a smaller area.

Horray for cable channels! The last thing anyone needs is more stray cables floating around.

With the whole thing powered up, the keyboard shines gloriously in the dark. However, the dedicated media keys are barely visible as they’re not lit. What a bummer. This is definitely an oversight as media keys are keys used most often in the dark and should be lit.

[section label=3. Software]

ROCCAT Isku Software

Here we have our first look at the Isku’s software. The first tab allows for the programming of the 5 dedicated macro buttons.

The second tab controls the keys in the EasyZone. They all work with the EasyShift Key.

The function keys and the media control keys can be programmed as well.

General settings can be set through the 4th tab. It mainly dictates the keyboard backlight, key behaviors, and key enabling/disabling.

Driver updates can be obtained directly from the software.

As promised in my ROCCAT Kone [+] review, let’s talk a little about ROCCAT Talk. The gist of it is that when you have both your ROCCAT Isku and ROCCAT Kone [+] connected together at the same time (or any ROCCAT Talk enabled keyboard/mouse combo), some settings on one device can be mapped to a macro on the other. For example, in the picture above, you can see that with ROCCAT Talk I’m now able to map the DPI adjustment function onto a macro on the Isku.

[section label=4. Performance]

ROCCAT Isku Performance

Test 1: Starcraft 2

The ROCCAT Isku was a great asset for Starcraft 2. My keystrokes were instantly translated, but I felt like I had to press further for the keys to register since its membrane switches have a longer travel distance than the Cherry MX Black switches on my Steelseries 6GV2. The keystrokes felt tactile and were silent even during rapid tapping. No ghosting issue was detected, and the brightly lit keys really helped while gaming in the dark. The macro keys were easy to reach and press. I had M1 through M3 bound to creating workers for each of the three races and found them to be quite helpful.

Test 2: Battlefield 3

The main concern here with many membrane keyboards is ghosting. The capability of handling multiple key presses is a must in order to play this chaotic first person shooter. Luckily, the ROCCAT Isku did not produce an hiccups here even with 4 keys being held down at the same time (Shift, W,D, and Q). All keys registered perfectly and were responsive.

Also, since I had some macros bound in the SC2, bank switching came in handy here. The keyboard’s software even provided me with an audio alert when I pressed the bank switch buttons to indicate which one is being selected.

Test 3: Typing and General use

Typing on the ROCCAT Isku was a fairly satisfying experience. The actuation force on the keys were quite light, but didn’t feel as light as some mechanical switches such as the Cherry MX Reds. The oversized matte wristrest was one of the most comfortable wristrests I have ever used. After an hour of typing my hands were still ready for for more. Additionally, the keys were dead silent throughout rapid typing sessions – something I haven’t experienced ever since switching over to mechanical.

The macro keys were exceptionally helpful for everyday use. Using the included Isku driver software, nearly half the keyboard can be programmed to perform specific tasks and execute system functions like shutdown or wake. The EasyZone was every accessible and felt natural to use. I programmed them to launch every single program on my desktop and still had plenty to spare. The only downside to this is remembering them all, but this was foreignness was quickly dissipated after about a week of consistent use. The dedicated media control keys made pausing, adjusting volume, and stopping while enjoying media require minimum effort, but not having back lights on them was a bummer.

The driver software was frustration free. The interface was clean, well categorized, and navigation was very intuitive. Something I found to be a great addition is the audio notification that plays every time I switched a macro bank or recorded a macro. This made transitioning from bank to bank a lot less confusing as it gave me some sort of auditory confirmation of the change.

[section label=5.Conclusion]

ROCCAT Isku Conclusions

This is my first experience with a ROCCAT keyboard (as the Kone[+] was my first experience with a ROCCAT mouse), and I must say it’s a good start. The immense feature set of the ROCCAT Isku in combination with the number of programmable macros on this keyboard makes this thing quite impressive. With seemingly unlimited amount of macros, this board can be customized for nearly any use. The strategically placed EasyShift key and EasyZone made macros very accessible and natural to use. The keyboard illumination kept the keyboard brightly lit, which helped me tremendously as I watched movies in a dark environment, but since the  media navigation keys lack backlights, I found myself struggling to find the right keys when I wanted to adjust the volume.

The build quality on the Isku is top notch and most of the components that went into this keyboard screams  quality; however, be aware of the bezel around the keys. It’s comprised of a glossy plastic and feels less durable than the rest of the chassis and it also tends to attract a lot of fingerprints. The keycaps have a decent grip on them and are coated with a nice layer of paint. The wire is not braided, but instead sheathed in a thick coat of rubber. Personally, I don’t think this is an issue as keyboard cables are meant to be stationary, but if you have a lot of gamer rage, you may want to look for something else.

Performance was surprisingly good with the ROCCAT Isku. Not only did it excel at gaming, it’s a great plank to have for cubicle warriors too. No ghosting issues were detected in neither Starcraft 2 or Battlefield 3, which confirmed the advanced anti-ghosting feature printed on the box. The keys responded well to my strokes, being decently tactile and not mushy. They were also extremely quiet given the amount of pressure I usually apply when I type and the rapidity of my tapping. Despite my furious typing, the keyboard did not slide off the table thanks to its rubberized feet and it’s hefty weight. The large wrist rest also scores top points for being one of the most comfortable I’ve ever used.

The driver that came with the Isku is very mature and it shows that ROCCAT spent a lot of time developing it with users in mind. All the settings were categorized under the appropriate tabs, which in combination with a simple, easy to use interface, it makes changing settings and programming macros a piece of cake. Although fascinating, I found the ROCCAT Talk function to be not as practical as I expected. At the moment, ROCCAT Talk enabled devices are few and far between as well, so I wouldn’t make a purchasing decision through the ROCCAT Talk feature alone. That said, I can’t speak for everyone, so you might end up finding ROCCAT Talk super useful. Who knows.

That said, I still think that a membrane keyboard is still no match for a mechanical keyboard in terms of tactile feedback and responsiveness. Coming from a 6GV2 myself, I missed the feeling of my Cherry MX Black switches while gaming, and felt like I had to press deeper for the keys to register. The glossy bezel around the keys attracted a ton of dust and fingerprints during my weeks of use. Although this can be solved by a simple wipe everyday, this can be eliminated if ROCCAT just crafted the entire thing out of something not glossy.  Also, despite the Isku’s gleaming set of features, you won’t find any audio or USB pass through ports.  This is possibly the only downer about the Isku. Considering this is one of ROCCAT’s flagship products, I’d definitely like to see something as simple as passthroughs be included.

Currently, the ROCCAT Isku will set you back $87.99, which is a very steep price for a keyboard, especially one that doesn’t use the more expensive and more durable mechanical key switches. Considering other keyboards on the market such as the Razer BlackWidow ($69.99) and the CM Storm QuickFire Pro ($86.99) come with mechanical switches and at a lower pricepoint, it’s going to be a bit difficult to justify a near $90 pricetag for a gaming keyboard with a couple extra macros and membrane switches.

That said, I will concede that not everyone out there is looking to go with a mechanical keyboard and as a membrane keyboard, you’ll definitely be hard-pressed to find anything better. However, with membrane based options such as the Microsoft Sidewinder X4 at $49.99, the Logitech G110 at $55.38, Cyborg V.5 at $47.67 and Razer Lycosa at $66.49, you cant help but think that the Isku is about $30 more than it needs to be.

Bottom Line

The ROCCAT Isku is one of the best non-mechanical gaming keyboards you can currently find on the market. With tactile keys, excellent construction quality, and an astonishing macro count, this plank is perfect for gamers who demand copious programmable keys. Just be prepared to shell out nearly $90 for this thing.

Special thanks to ROCCAT for making this review possible!

Roccat Isku Review

Manufacturer:Roccat
UK price (as reviewed):£71.99 (inc VAT)
US price (as reviewed):$119.99 (ex tax)

The Roccat Isku’s main feature isn’t its macro keys, funky backlighting or any of the usual gaming keyboard hyperbole. That’s not to say the Isku lacks these features – it’s just that this is the first keyboard to support Roccat’s Talk technology, which enables it to control the functions of a Talk-compatible mouse.

At the moment, that’s limited to the uninspiring Roccat Kone+, so we had no choice but to use this to test the Isku’s Talk features. Talk’s main advantage is the ability to use a keyboard button to change settings on the mouse. For example, you can map a key press (or pairing) to change mouse profiles instantly. Even more useful is the ability to change the sensitivity of the mouse with a keyboard keystroke rather than having to stretch a finger towards an awkwardly placed secondary button.

Setting up a key binding is a bit of a faff, especially if you want a key to work as a toggle rather than having to hold it down, but we were able to set up some Talk functions fairly quickly. Changing the mode switches the mouse’s lights to the appropriate colour, and holding the M1 macro key to reduce the dpi sensitivity was a lot easier than scrabbling our fingers around the mouse’s small body.

However, despite its Talk technology, the Isku is unpleasant to use. The keys feel cheap and loose, and they also lack responsiveness. The backlight caused trouble too, as the light doesn’t bleed into the key markings particularly well. When viewed from any reasonable typing angle (rather than absolutely perpendicular) the lettering appeared fuzzy, with the tops of letters disappearing altogether.

This is less of a problem for touch-typists, but even we don’t know where the ‘~’ key usually lives, or whether the per cent symbol is above the 4 or the 5 key, so we found ourselves constantly peering over the top of the keyboard to read the symbols.

It doesn’t help that the backlight turns itself off after a period of inactivity. The attractive, if cluttered, software lets you set the time-out period and the level of intensity to which the backlight will drop, but even though we set a level of 100 per cent brightness, the backlight still turned itself off. This meant an extra key press every time we took a break from our PC.

Click to enlarge

At least the macro keys are in a useful position. The three keys below the Space Bar are easy to press with the side of your thumb. There are five more on the left of the main key area, labelled M1-5, and a record button above F3. Above the standard keys there’s also a row of media control buttons, and a backlight control button to the right of this. You can choose from six brightness levels, although one of those is no brightness at all, which makes the keyboard very hard to use for non-touch-typists.

While the shape and size of the Isku is appealing, there’s a fair bit of bend in the body too. As with all recent Roccat peripherals, the USB plugs are at least labelled with the model name, making it easy to know what you’re unplugging.

Conclusion

While Roccat’s aim of shifting fiddly mouse controls to a keyboard is a good idea, the Isku is unpleasant to use thanks to its flimsy build quality and poor key action. What’s more, the only mouse that currently supports Roccat Talk is the lacklustre Kone+. Talk has potential, but it deserves better-quality devices than the Isku and Kone+ to see it reach it.

Delivery and complete set

The ROCCAT Isku gaming keyboard is delivered in a large cardboard box, the design of which is made in black and blue colors typical of the manufacturer. On the title side there is a large image of the keyboard, which allows you to get acquainted with the features of its design. There are also several logos and short lists of keyboard features, presented both in alphabetical form and in the form of small icons.

See the back of the box for a more detailed description of the keyboard’s features, including five fully programmable profiles, EasyShift[+] and ROCCAT Talk technologies, and functional software. In addition, here you can learn about the technical characteristics of the device, the scope of delivery and the necessary system requirements.

Inside the box, in addition to the keyboard itself, we found:

  • quick setup guide;

  • ROCCAT ID card with a special code for access to a closed section on the official website of the manufacturer;

  • disc with drivers and software.

Appearance and arrangement of elements

The keyboard, despite not a certain “squareness” of the corporate design, which uses an abundance of chopped edges, looks quite interesting and creates the impression of a modern technological device, which should raise the morale of the gamer. Particular attention in ROCCAT Isku is attracted by its large dimensions, a quarter of which is occupied by a large, and, accordingly, comfortable, under-palm area, and a number of additional keys — more about them a little later.

The keyboard case, up to 5 cm high (with legs unfolded), is made entirely of plastic, which provides high rigidity and is available in two versions. The first is a practical matte with a pleasant to the touch rough texture for the base of the palmar area and the edging of the upper part, and the second is a more elegant, but absolutely not practical gloss, applied to the base and edging of the key blocks, a small part of the palmar area and, partially, for the keys themselves. .

The result of this choice is the fight against both permanent fingerprints and settling dust. At the same time, the glossy finish is not very resistant to scratches. As for the build quality, it is very good, all the elements sit perfectly in their places, the central part practically does not bend under pressure on it, however, the characteristic crunch of plastic under load can still be heard. However, it is heard only with intentional and strong pressure on the joints and when trying to twist.

The key block is based on the British-style layout, which features a two-level [Enter] key and a significantly shortened [Shift] key with the [Backslash] key located in the vacant space. However, this practically does not affect the convenience of work, even if the keyboard with the American type of layout has been used for a long time.

The dimensions of the caps of the letter keys are 18×18 mm, however, due to the use of a trapezoidal profile, their working area is only 12×15 mm, which, however, is more than enough for comfortable and fast typing. The key height is 5 mm, which is somewhere between notebook and traditional keys. The key travel is approximately 3.5mm, and is fairly soft with a well-defined response. The noise from the keys during typing is quite loud, but in games it is almost noticeable.

The characterization of the keys is done in a specific way. If mainly white (gray) translucent application is used for keyboards with LED backlighting, then in ROCCAT Isku the characters are completely transparent, which makes them almost unreadable when the backlight is inactive. Nevertheless, the characters are engraved with high quality, they are quite large, while the Latin alphabet is clearly distinguishable from the Cyrillic alphabet due to the bold style.

Blocks of arrows and system keys have the «correct» dimensions, which makes it easier to work with the device. There is also a separate digital block.

Above the digital block is a zone with three familiar indicators. Its distinctive feature is the indication of the activation of the EasyShift[+] key — when it is active, the Caps Lock indicator starts flashing. A little to the left of the indicators there is a key for adjusting the brightness of the backlight of the keys.

At the top center there are 8 additional keys for controlling the volume and playback of audio or video, as well as launching the browser and the My Computer window

A little further to the left there is a button to activate recording of macro commands on the fly with an indicator signaling the beginning of the process. In addition, there are five indicators that indicate which of the profiles is currently activated.

To the left of the main keypad, there are five additional keys [M1]-[M5] for assigning macro commands, however, many other functions can be assigned to them.

Under the spacebar are three additional keys mechanically made like buttons. By default, they are designed to switch profiles and call the driver window.

On the very palm area you can see the embossed glossy logo and manufacturer’s name, as well as the name of the keyboard.

ROCCAT Isku’s predominantly flat base has one rather interesting feature. There are special channels that allow you to optimally arrange the wires on the desktop. For maximum grip of the keyboard with surfaces, six very large rubber supports are used, which are distributed around the perimeter.

The opening feet are rubberized and raise the keyboard approximately 8-10º.

Keyboard Features

The ROCCAT Isku keyboard, like any other ROCCAT device, has several interesting features, both visual and technical.

First of all, the bright blue LED backlighting of the keys attracts attention. Only 10 keys located above the main unit are not illuminated. The brightness level is adjustable within six values, including its absence. At the minimum value, it is convenient to work in the dark, the backlight does not “cut” the eyes. The maximum value is best set in the daytime or in bright ambient light.

The disadvantage of the backlight is its lack of uniformity, which is associated with the internal relief structure of the keys. This is especially noticeable when viewed from an angle, when parts of the characters disappear, and, for example, the letter R visually looks like the letter K.

performed by the keyboard.

To do this, ROCCAT Isku has three separate zones activated by pressing the [Shift] key. The first of these are 5 macro keys, the second — 20 keys of the main unit, called Easy-Zone, and the third — 3 keys under the space bar.

The keyboard also includes support for ROCCAT Talk technology, which greatly enhances Easy-Shift[+] technology, allowing keyboard keys to be combined with the buttons of a compatible mouse such as the ROCCAT Kone[+].

Software: ROCCAT Isku Driver

Gaming mouse settings are configured using ROCCAT Isku Driver V1.20 proprietary software, which must be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website.

The program has a pleasant design and boasts an abundance of all kinds of settings and functions, which at first seems a little confusing. The main window is divided into five tabs available for each of the five profiles. From each tab, you can switch between profiles, create them, save and load them, and also go to setting up the activation of profiles when launching certain applications. The number of profiles is not limited, but only five can be loaded into the device’s memory.

The first tab that opens at startup becomes «Main Control». Here you can access the assignment of functions to macro keys and keys under the spacebar, both separately and in conjunction with the Easy-Shift[+]-key.

The total number of functions is very large and includes the ability to assign keys to call an email client, browser, calculator or open the My Computer window. You can also assign some system functions, such as putting the computer to sleep or shutting down, multimedia and browser functions, switching profiles, timer functions, and controlling ROCCAT Talk technology. Separately, it is worth noting the huge number of prepared macros for 20 games and 10 programs that can be further edited.

“EasyZone Control” tab allows you to set the functions of 20 keys — [1]-[5], [Q]-[T],

In the «Media Keys/F-Keys» tab, you can specify which functions the 8 keys above the main unit and the row of function keys [F1]-[F12] will perform.

From each of the three tabs listed, you can go to a special editor that allows you to easily create various macros. It is possible to specify the response time of actions to the nearest milliseconds.

«Advanced Control» contains settings for repeating characters (delay and frequency), the backlight level of the keys and its action after the specified time, as well as controlling the volume of the voice announcement. Here you can enable/disable some system keys and reset all driver settings to default.

In the last tab, called «Update/Support», you can find out about the driver and keyboard firmware versions, check for updates, and go to the support site.

Impressions of work

When thinking about buying a ROCCAT Isku, first of all, you should consider the size of the available workspace, as the keyboard has a very impressive size and in some cases it simply may not have enough space for comfortable placement, for example, if you use small computer desk.

Under ideal conditions, the large size greatly improves the usability of the keyboard, especially thanks to the large palm rest area with a pleasantly rough surface. In addition, the increased size allowed the manufacturer not only to use a full-size layout with standard unmodified key blocks, but also to equip it with a number of additional keys to which important and frequently used functions can be assigned.

Typing on the ROCCAT Isku is very comfortable, especially if you get used to the keys of medium height and with a slightly reduced travel to the point of actuation. The key travel itself is very soft, and during prolonged use, the hands practically do not get tired. It is important to note the LED backlight, although not ideal, but greatly simplifies the search for the desired key. The backlight is not enough only for the keys above the main block, the symbols on which are made in a not very readable dark gray color.

In FPS/TPS games, all important functions can be conveniently assigned to macro keys and space keys, which makes it much easier to access the necessary abilities, actions, or weapon sets. For RTS and RPG games, including MMORPGs, a 20-key zone called the EasyZone is especially useful. Moreover, all these additional keys are associated with the Easy-Shift[+]-key, which doubles the number of available actions for each of the 5 profiles.

The only thing we didn’t like about ROCCAT Isku is a very easily soiled glossy surface that surrounds all key blocks and instantly picks up fingerprints during operation. And the keys themselves often get dirty. And when cleaning, there is a very high probability of leaving a copious amount of micro-scratches.

Results

ROCCAT ISKU Illuminated Gaming Keyboard is a very interesting and functional game keyboard, which, possessing quite large, is the full of perceptions of the full expansion, offers the full of perceptions, and some and bright blue LED lighting. In addition, the keyboard provides a number of additional keys, the number of which increases several times with the use of Easy-Shift[+] technology. Thanks to proprietary software, all these keys can be easily assigned to important and frequently used functions or various macro commands, and separately for each of the five profiles. It is also important to note the support for ROCCAT Talk technology, which allows you to combine keyboard keys with the buttons of a compatible ROCCAT mouse to enhance their functionality.

Among the shortcomings, we can only highlight the glossy top, which actively collects fingerprints and dust, and is prone to scratches, which significantly worsen the appearance of the keyboard.

Advantages:

  • Interesting appearance;

  • Excellent case ergonomics;

  • Very good key layout;

  • Bright LED backlight;

  • Quite a large number of additional keys, especially when using the Easy-Shift[+] technology;

  • Support for ROCCAT Talk technology;

  • Functional software;

  • Ability to create macros on the fly;

  • The presence of special channels in the base for comfortable placement of wires on the desktop.

Drawbacks:

  • The glossy edging of the keys has to be cleaned constantly, and very carefully;

  • The large dimensions of the keyboard require a fairly large space on the desktop;

  • Some flaws in the backlighting of the keys that are only visible from certain angles;

  • Relatively high cost.
