For the past 12 years, Capcom has been mocking Resident Evil in such perverse ways that the thought of the series dying felt like a release. The last numbered issue turned out to be a disgusting game, and attempts to do something on the battlefields of online battles led to the emergence of Operation Raccoon City and, sorry, Umbrella Corps. It got to the point that the mediocre RE: Revelations for the 3DS was tacitly considered the best «resident» since the fourth part, but even its modest merits managed to fuck up with an indistinct serial sequel. It seems to be all, there is nowhere to fall further, the bottom has been reached. All the more surprising was the unexpected announcement of Resident Evil 7 at last year’s E3. First-person view, a new storyline and a hero, the oppressive atmosphere of a psychological thriller. Until the very release, it was not believed that the Japanese would be able to give out a decent game, but they did the almost impossible, reviving the corpse that had begun to cool down.

In fact, «seven» — not the only Resident Evil in the first person. The universe already had both Survivor and, in part, Dead Aim. Only side projects were not distinguished by special elaboration and were quickly forgotten. Resident Evil 7, even if it uses the same view from the eyes, is still a full-fledged license plate part, for which much more resources have been allocated. Moreover, it is the first in a series in a very long time that can rightly be attributed to the survival horror genre.

True, the game comes from a not quite familiar side. This time, the danger is not crowds of zombies — there are no half-decomposed walking dead here at all. But you will have to communicate often and closely with the crazy Baker family — it is this trinity that will frighten the first half of the passage. The developers of RE 7 seem to have been keeping an eye on where the horror genre is heading, so prepare for the fact that it will take several minutes to sit around the corner and wait until an invulnerable enemy decides to go to another part of the corridor. It’s scary at first, but pretty quickly you realize that the madman does not pose a big threat, he cannot kill quickly, and he does not shine with the heights of intelligence. Therefore, each subsequent skirmish is more annoying than it causes any other emotions.
The mansion itself, in which the protagonist of the game Ethan found himself, perfectly conveys the character of its inhabitants. Rotten innards in the refrigerator, boarded up windows, crows nailed to the doors, mold in the corners, cells with bars, some kind of abomination on the walls — you literally feel physically disgusted with this place. I want to run without looking back. This is what the house of a distraught maniac who wants to play with his victim should look like. In almost every room there is something nasty, and from a sudden rustle outside the window, you can jump. By the way, the seventh part is best played with headphones, turning off the light — then an unforgettable experience is guaranteed. You can also try PS VR, but there the picture is grainy, and many users complain about motion sickness.
In terms of puzzles, the game has not gone further than the last releases — no oddities like «find a medal — stick it in the fountain — get the key» from the classic parts. It is clear that this was done for the sake of convenience — modern players are unlikely to run around the locations ten times in search of missed or hidden items, but it’s still a little disappointing that the quest part is a thing of the past. Or maybe I just woke up a decrepit grumpy fan of the series, missing the absurd puzzles. Be that as it may, now it is enough to get to a certain place and just pick up the right thing, or, to move forward, solve a simple task like matching a shadow with a contour on a wall. There is one exception in the game — you definitely have to think about it — but this is not enough for 8-10 hours of passing.
Oh, these game conventions
But the drastic changes cannot hide the fact that Resident Evil 7 painstakingly copies the 1996 original. The action for the most part takes place on the territory of the mansion and its environs, the doors in the house are closed with keys with different emblems, and the “oldies” will certainly appreciate getting a working shotgun by replacing it with a broken one. And in terms of the atmosphere of hopelessness, the games are similar, except that instead of bloodthirsty zombies, no less bloodthirsty hillbilly and mutants of several types are hunting for you.
The plot, as mentioned at the very beginning, introduces new characters. True, the story itself, like Frankenstein’s monster, is assembled from pieces of many other projects with small interspersed with their own ideas. The plot is so desperately reminiscent of Silent Hill 2 that at some point it seems as if the hero will come not to an abandoned house somewhere in the wilds of Louisiana, but to a foggy town. Meeting with a sick family and the general cruelty of what is happening make us remember Xavier Hans’ Frontier and a whole bunch of other films about crazy rednecks and people who turned the wrong way. A little later, the real Saw turns on, and the last 2-3 hours are clearly spied on by F.E.A.R.
However, such borrowings do not harm the seventh part too much, if only because it is quite interesting to follow the unfolding events, and the finale not only explains who and for what reason is to blame for what happened, but also throws information for thought. However, after passing, there is still a bitter aftertaste of secondary and a feeling that somewhere you have already seen it. On the other hand, the games in the series have never been distinguished by a deep study of the plot, so Capcom has remained true to tradition here.
⇡# Shoot — Survive
Exactly the same situation is observed on the gameplay front. Sometimes there are thoughts that you play Outlast, sometimes comparisons with Alien: Isolation persistently climb into your head. However, Resident Evil 7 managed to strike a good balance between hide-and-seek episodes and more action-packed moments involving shooting and boss fights. The developers did not reveal all the cards before the release of the game, so it seemed as if the seventh part would become a measured horror movie, where a helpless hero huddled in every corner and tried to act as quietly as possible.
This nasty thing may well «eat» a considerable part of your ammunition
It’s nice that in reality it turned out to be completely different. You will have to use a variety of weapons often, and not only to get rid of the Bakers, but also against moldy freaks. Dealing with even one such enemy is not easy — he can withstand 10-15 pistol shots, which, in conditions of limited resources, looks like an unacceptable waste, and even a few reptiles do pose a deadly threat.
The most effective way to kill mutants is with headshots. A couple or three is enough, but try to hit here when the sight sways from side to side, and the enemy himself not only moves, but also covers the vulnerable part with his hands. Now imagine that you have entered a narrow corridor, and these guys are approaching you from both sides. Here you will involuntarily succumb to panic and start firing in all directions, just to free yourself. The last time such tension and fear for your life was caused by the fourth part — it took more than ten years for Resident Evil to start scaring again.
And if everything is fine with a long distance, then close combat leaves much to be desired. Enemies cannot be knocked back — only their attacks can be blocked, reducing the damage taken. If suddenly you are surrounded, it is unlikely to get out. Of the melee weapons, there is only a knife that is not felt at all: the camera does not move during attacks, and the mutants do not react to damage. It’s silly, of course, to demand something of the Condemned level, but when it comes to a first-person game, you still want more realism, and not a lean animation of lazy hand waving.
And the hero himself doesn’t move too fast — it’s not entirely clear whether this is a tribute to «tank» control, or whether it was originally intended. Ethan looks around leisurely, but walks and runs as if doing a morning workout, and not escaping from a crazy man with a shovel. As a result, you have to regularly rake on the back of the neck with the same shovel, then with claws, or with something else sharp or heavy — and so on until you get the hang of backing away, blocking blows along the way. Doesn’t hinder the passage too much, but in fights with bosses, such slowness can cause a lot of problems.
I really don’t want to go there, but I have to…
I hope you, having read and looked at the screenshots, have not yet run away to write comments that the seventh part is not Resident Evil at all. And what is a «resident» anyway? First of all — the oppressive atmosphere and attempts to survive in conditions of lack of supplies, and only then the half-decomposed dead and everything else. And just in this regard, Resident Evil 7 looks much better than the last two numbered releases and a bunch of offshoots combined. The «Seven» can scare in places, ammo and first aid kits are constantly in short supply, and most of the locations are designed in such a way that you involuntarily want to get out of there as quickly as possible. This has not happened in the series for a long time — and it’s good that the studio for once decided to listen to the players, and did not continue to release strange action projects.
In general, the developers faced a difficult task. On the one hand, they had to please the army of old fans who have been begging for a year to release a normal game. On the other hand, to attract new blood, hence the now fashionable first-person view, and other features of this kind of horror. And, in my humble opinion, Capcom managed to “get” into both audiences.
Yes, some will scold the change of perspective, but if you think about it, it was a vital necessity. Moreover, such an arrangement of the camera has even more advantages than a static one, since the view is even more limited. You can also kick around the corner scenes — they are really boring (Alien: Isolation looks much better on this field), but there are not so many of them. The plot, as noted above, is secondary and stingy with its own ideas. However, these shortcomings do not prevent you from enjoying Resident Evil 7 — this is a good «surhor», worthy of serving as the basis for the further development of the series. The main thing is that in the next part the Japanese do not spoil everything again.
