Resident Evil 2 rankings guide: Shoot for the S(T.A.R.S.)

Resident Evil 2 is out now, and we’ve a bunch of guides to help you excel in Raccoon City. This particular guide aims to help you with the game’s rankings system.

This guide is a work in progress and will be updated as more is known.

Resident Evil 2 rankings system — Time requirement

Just as in the past, part of your ranking depends on the amount of time taken to complete the game.

Here’s what the game’s results screen says warrants a particular ranking:

  • S Ranking: 2 hours or less
  • A Ranking: 3 hours 30 minutes or less
  • B Ranking: 5 hours or less
  • C Ranking: More than 5 hours

Be aware though that your overall ranking isn’t solely dependent on the above timings.

Update: It’s now largely understood that players should aim for times under 3 hours (1st Run) or 3.5 hours (1st Run) on Standard for an S, or 2.5 hours (1st Run) or 3 hours (2nd Run) on Hardcore.

Resident Evil 2 rankings system — Other factors

As with past games, it’s clear that other factors impact your ranking. Those factors include the likes of:

  • Deaths/continues (Assisted/Standard difficulty)
  • First Aid Spray heals
  • Amount of saves made
  • Infinite ammo weapons

These factors can impact your ranking positively and negatively; we know this because we had a Standard difficulty run over 3 hours and 30 minutes and still managed an A ranking.

Infinite ammo weapons will restrict players from receiving an S+ ranking, needed to unlock other infinite ammo weapons.

Resident Evil 2 rankings system — Final calculation

In past games points were awarded, behind the scenes, for your playthrough. If you achieved a stellar time in the N64 version of Resident Evil 2, you were awarded 100 points as an example; avoiding First Aid Sprays also awarded 100 points. Your total score dictated your ranking.

At the time of writing, there’s simply not enough data to calculate these types of scores and what they equate to, in-game, but if you’re aiming for an S ranking, be speedy (and behave yourself).

As more data comes in, we’ll update this section to make the ranking calculation crystal clear.

Resident Evil 2 is out now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.

Guide Resident Evil 2 Remake – what are the conditions to get the S+ rank (how to get the best ranking) ?

In the remake of Resident Evil 2, there is a ranking system that gives players a general score at the end of the scenario/campaign based on different criteria that we will reveal to you throughout this page. This will allow you to better understand what the game expects from you and how you can more easily get the maximum note at the end of your run. First of all, it should be noted that this rating system goes from the « E » for the lowest rating to the « S+ » for the best rank.

You can imagine that this ranking is not only there to look pretty and that you have something to gain if you succeed in getting the best rank. For example, you can unlock and obtain infinite ammunition for your weapons by reaching the highest rankings.

Resident Evil 2 Remake – how to obtain rank S or rank S+

(the conditions) :

The requirements for getting the « S » grade and the « S+ » grade are not quite the same… One will be much easier to get than the other… Explanation !

→ Get Rank S : The « S » rank of Resident Evil 2 Remake is based only on the time you will take to finish the game. Whether it is in the first run or in the second run. You just have to reach the target time to get this rating. You can use all the weapons you want and save as many times as necessary via one of the typewriters.

→ Get Rank S+ : Things get a little more complicated to get this rank, you have to finish the game with the target time, save less than 4 times during your entire run and don’t use a weapon with endless ammo.

☆ Tip of rank S : When you die, it is strongly advised against choosing the « continue » option that the game offers you… For the simple reason that the internal timer continues to turn and that it will not take into account the time you lost between your « death » and the last waypoint that allowed an automatic save.

Instead, prefer to load your last save point directly (done manually via a typewriter) to make sure that the game’s internal clock resets to your last manual save.

Finally, note that the chronometer stops when you pause the game and while you watch the cinematic scenes… During all other actions, the timer continues to be active, especially during the puzzle and enigma phases.

Time required to obtain grade A or S(+) in Resident Evil 2 Remake :

Below are the timer conditions at the end of the run to get an « A » or « S » score whether in the first scenario or on the game’s second road.

Time required for grade A Leon / Claire scenario :

  • Normal difficulty – Finish the game in less than 5 hours.
  • Normal difficulty 2nd road (B Scenario) – Finish the game in less than 4 hours.
  • Hardcore difficulty – Finish the game in less than 4 hours.
  • Hardcore difficulty 2nd road (B Scenario) – Finish the game in less than 3h40.

Time required for the score S(+) scenario Leon / Claire :

  • Normal difficulty – Finish the game in less than 3h40.
  • Normal difficulty 2nd road (B Scenario) – Finish the game in less than 3 hours
  • Hardcore Difficulty – Finish the game in less than 2h40.
  • Hardcore difficulty 2nd road (B Scenario) – Finish the game in less than 2 hours.

☆ Note : Remember that for the maximum score, the S+ rank, you must finish the game with this chronometer and do not save more than four times on typewriters and do not use weapons with unlimited ammo.

Rewards obtained : Samurai Edge weapon with infinite ammo (standard difficulty) and LE5 Submachine with unlimited ammo if you ending with rank S. Rocket launcher (ATM-4) with unlimited ammunition (Leon) and Mini-Gun with infinite ammunition (Claire) when you finishing with the rank S+ in hardcore difficulty.

Resident Evil HD Remaster

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 3 9000 Resident Evil 4

DEAD SPACE 2 9000 9000 9000 the door creaks open. How many ammo do I have? Fifteen? No, twelve. Okay, we live. It’s a pity that you can’t leave one “for yourself”, but the censorship commission will not understand. It’s dim inside — naturally, as always — but Claire doesn’t want to turn on the flashlight. Great.

As soon as I pass into the depths of the room, three tortured, bloody bodies in laboratory coats stand around with deep groans. Run? It won’t come out, they blocked the exit. Shoot in the legs? Too long, they’re too close. Plan b»! Claire yanks the pin of the fragmentation grenade, a flash — and three corpses fall to the same place where they rose from a second ago. You can exhale and look around the room … No, you can’t. After a couple of seconds, one of the corpses, whose hands and face were literally torn off by the explosion, gets up again.

Claire swears with expression. Four bullets to the head and the zombie crashes to the ground. Well now… No? Not?! He gets up again!

«Really?» Claire asks aloud, taking aim again.

Yes, seriously. Remake Resident Evil 2 — he is.

1095 weeks later

Resident Evil 2 from 1998 is an amazing game and one of the best horror games of all time. With this, I think, hardly anyone will argue. Her ideas were sometimes far ahead of their time, hitting the technology ceiling of the time: two playable characters, four interconnected story campaigns, several additional (and, moreover, not left behind) game modes, a bunch of unlockable bonuses, a lot of gameplay systems . ..

Only one problem — RE2-1998 has aged quite badly. Still, twenty-one years since the release make themselves felt: we turned a blind eye to the problems then, during the active development of the gaming industry, but now, in a competitive and jaded market, they can only be ignored out of nostalgic indulgence. Today, the press, caustically giggling, would tear RE2-1998 to pieces for the curvature of the controls and the ridiculous story and voice acting. And the players would hardly be left out.

The remake shows the arrival of Leon and Claire in the city a little more detailed and instantly brings up to date: if you see a corpse (or a crowd of corpses) — run

Therefore, when Capcom zero remake of Resident Evil 2 (hereinafter — RE2-2019), the Internet exploded. A third-person camera, and even without “tank” controls? What if it’s not scary? Where is the horror? It looks cool, of course, but what is it now, some kind of «action»?!

No, no, no. Do not worry. RE2-2019 is only as good as you think. She might even be a little better.

This is not how I imagined my first day on the job

Despite the sometimes photorealistic ( RE Engine game very fitting) graphics, over-the-shoulder view and dozens of smaller changes, the remake never forgets about the lessons of the classic (1–3) series. Resident Evil 7 , for all its virtues, only reminded of the golden days of the franchise, but RE2-2019- this is the classic, just capitally ennobled and pulled up to modern standards. Therefore, if you, being a fan who lost faith in Capcom or, conversely, a person unfamiliar with the series, doubted, I will clarify: RE2-2019 is not a peppy zombie action game. This is a slow, viscous, extremely old-fashioned horror, in which, of course, you can shoot, but most often you want to get by with a little blood.

The game does not say this directly, but clearly expects a knowledgeable person to sit behind the monitor. Leon laments that he «doesn’t know what else to expect,» but the player does. Knows and grins ominously

The project’s producer, Tsuyoshi Kanda, took pleasure in reminding the public in almost every interview that he, like the entire development team, is an avid fan of the original game. Surprisingly, Kanda-san was not disingenuous: instead of literally quoting a fossilized original, the developers left the remnants of the past behind, bringing to the modern audience the very essence of Resident Evil 2 — constant stress .

And this stress is already pressing in the main menu, when the game begins with a deceptively difficult question: who to play as. In Raccoon City, which now looks like a branch of hell, two people are stuck: yesterday’s police academy graduate Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, who came to the city in search of brother Chris, one of the protagonists of Resident Evil 1 .

However, as I have already said, the dilemma is not simple only in appearance. It is necessary to play for the one who likes it more, even outwardly! Anyway, RE2-2019, like the original, needs to be completed for both at least two, or even all four times: the plots of Leon and Claire are partially different. One character will “start” the game, and the second will “finish” by starting in a different place and following a slightly different route; in the original it was called «A» and «B» scenarios. Passages differ not only in fragments of the plot and secondary characters, but also in some mechanics. The latter, by the way, was one of the most interesting finds of RE2: say, if Leon takes some item from the weapon box in scenario «A», Claire, following in his footsteps in «B», will no longer receive it.

In the first scenario, this guy just hangs from the ceiling and doesn’t bother anyone. In the second… in the second, it is, in general, found there, but far from being so harmless. In the end, the trick of the scripts was just a gimmick — albeit conscientiously implemented — to stretch out a rather intimate game. So here. But, to the credit of Capcom and the design of the old RE2, I didn’t want to scold the project for it then and I don’t want to now: RE2-2019and really worth going through as many times as she asks.

Partly for purely gameplay reasons. As the game progresses, Leon and Claire gain access to different weapons, and this significantly affects the approach to combat. Leon has a pistol, a shotgun, a Desert Eagle, and a flamethrower. Claire has a pistol (later it can be «accustomed» to Desert Eagle cartridges), a submachine gun, a grenade launcher and an electric gun. All this eats up their ammunition (and therefore shovels their economy), has unique properties and, in principle, changes the tactics of the game.

Ada’s first costume is a deliberately goofy homage to stereotypically «spy» outfits. But she does, damn it! Yes, and the red cocktail dress has not gone away

Partly, I want to run RE2-2019 for both of them, just to… Well, to be with them again. Twenty-one fucking years later. For a person who is not familiar with the series and who has not seen the original, the story will be completely up to the light bulb; do not eat me for these words, but the plot, to put it mildly, has never been a strong point of Resident Evil — and the remake does not change the situation, although it tries very hard.

In the late nineties, both Leon and Claire were just low-poly avatars for the player, «guides», although not without a couple of good phrases. But in the remake, it is much more interesting to follow them, if only because they have grown prettier. Say what you like, but since 1998, technology (as well as ideas about video game scenarios) have made a cosmic leap forward. Smooth, believable animations of movements and faces, habits, very «human», in defiance of the unintentional replaying of the 98th, the voice acting — everything is on top.

Leon and Claire rarely cross paths in the course of the story, but every appearance of a familiar, friendly face in this hell invariably pleases. For once, Leon acts and talks like a green recruit desperately trying to control himself, while Claire covers up her panic with jokes. And they didn’t forget about Ada Wong and Sherry Birkin: the first one also began to behave a little more believably — like a young hired spy, and not like a Bond veteran.

Cartridges are a luxury, not a means of killing

But this is all poetry. Whoever you choose, you have to do the same thing: survive and try to get out of Raccoon City as soon as possible. And this task, as in the original, is far from being the easiest. The whole city is teeming with zombies, there is always not enough space in the inventory, there is never too much ammunition — in a word, the great providence itself wants you to stay in the mass grave of Raccoon. Ammunition and medicines are important, but often not paramount. Without keys, maps, gems, and other even weirder nonsense needed to progress, even an ambulance will not get far, so you will not only have to beg, trying to squeeze as much good into your inventory as possible, but also solve a myriad of puzzles. Some are logical, some are not. And for this you need to explore, explore and explore everything around you, while escaping from zombies who have their own plans for you.

“Dude, let me in! I am a fairy! Don’t you believe in fairies?»

And it is in this area that RE2-2019 pleases the most, because the remake perfectly understands the essence of the original source and presents where it can be improved without changing the original. Indeed, at its core, RE2-2019, like RE2-1998, is a marathon test of stressful thinking and the player’s ability to make decisions under growing psychological pressure. It’s not so much the zombies themselves that are frightening, but the possible consequences of meeting with them — the loss of exhaustible resources. If you let stress take control of yourself and regularly make mistakes, thoughtlessly wasting inventory, in the end, if the main character does not die, then he certainly will not get out of the city: there will be nothing to fight with.

Although it’s worth admitting that in RE2-2019, zombies cause an unpleasant chill on the back even with their very sight. There are not so many unique models in the game, but… How vile they are! Even if they just stand on the other side of the glazed door, staring with their whitish eyes into the void, or pointlessly peck at a boarded-up window. And trust me, you’ll be overjoyed that they’re pounding on the window instead of dragging their feet in your direction, because encountering even one zombie is a problem. And not a single way out of the situation will be right — only compromises, which will almost certainly backfire unpleasantly in the future.

The remake reverses the sequence of some events and adds new details. Now, for example, the player has a real (albeit extremely primitive) reason to hate Police Chief Irons

The most obvious solution is to run. In RE2-1998, this worked with a bang: you force the zombies to rush forward, move away from the attack in time, and run away into the sunset at the speed of a motorcycle, while the creature realizes what’s what. Reeling fishing rods is easy even with “tank” controls, if you get used to it. But it worked because there was no physics in the game, but in RE2-2019every movement has weight and inertia. Leon, thank God, runs faster than zombies, but the advantage in speed is valuable only in open spaces, which are not so many in the game. But in narrow corridors it is possible to miss another creature, but it is difficult, and lightweight (read «human») control does not make the task easier.

In addition — well, you run away, so what? After all, the zombies will remain there — it will be funny if you did not pick up some object in the room, where you now have to return. Then the ghoul will also follow you, if you hesitate — the doors are no longer a hindrance to them. Or he will wander into some corner where it will be even more inconvenient to deal with him: right in front of a safe room with a chest, for example. Isn’t it better to shoot? Or, at worst, break the legs? Crawling, it will be much slower and more harmless.

Only darkness is worse than slimes. Darkness, in which you can hear that there is something nearby, but you can’t see it — the flashlight is weak, and it’s difficult to look in all directions at once to the side. They are just hard to hit, and sometimes the shots make them recoil, so quickly putting a couple of bullets in the head will not work. What if there are more zombies? At least two or three? This is already a huge waste of resources.

The dead cannot die

But even five headshots is never a guarantee of safety, and for such a decision I want to kiss everyone involved in the development of the remake. In RE2-1998, everything was simple: if a zombie fell and a pool of blood spread under it, it’s ready, you can forget it. If you have cleared the location, it will remain safe until the story event triggers a script that will add new enemies.

In RE2-2019, a zombie is guaranteed to die only if its skull is crushed, but even a shotgun volley can’t always cope with this, not to mention a pistol. And as long as the head remains on the shoulders, the zombies have a chance to rise up. In a second, in a couple of minutes, in half an hour — whenever. Maybe he will “remember” that he is still alive only when you decide to test it with lead.

Now multiply this fact by everything I mentioned above. Do you feel the full amount of paranoia in which you have to flounder? You go into a room where you haven’t been before, you see three or four dead bodies on the floor and you know that some of them are still dangerous. But who? Wasting bullets to calm everyone is unprofitable: what if they just lie down and are already resting? You will achieve only one — the rest can react to the noise. And how to be? Tiptoe over the corpses, saying: «Excuse me, I’m on the next one out»?

RE2-2019 never makes you feel completely safe; zombies from simple monsters turn into obstacles that make adjustments to your every step. You have to think not only about how to get to a particular location, but also about which way is better to get there. What to donate and what to keep. Where are the least zombies? Maybe somewhere I have already knocked down a part and it will be easier to squeeze through? So, but here there is only one, without legs, you can not even touch it. Hell, you still need to pick up a book from the library, it’s better to stun the crowd with flash noise than spend money …

Good evening, do you have a moment to talk about the best and not at all villainous Umbrella Corporation?

This sense of insecurity, as sticky as a wet T-shirt, increases exponentially when Mister X, the Tyrant, who was sent by Umbrella to eliminate witnesses of the catastrophe who are still alive, is added to the case. Thanks to modern technology, the big man now follows you everywhere and quickly reacts to the sounds of shots, and lags behind the main character only at the moments strictly indicated by the plot. And then, as a rule, not for long.

Most importantly, the game really doesn’t care how you handle all this. Playing RE2-2019 on «hardcore» (it is open immediately) with Leon was one of the most nerve-wracking and uncomfortable gaming experiences that I have experienced in my life. I wanted to stupidly hide in the corner of the safe room and stare at the map, flip through the diaries, look at the items in the inventory — in a word, anything, just so as not to go outside. Because outside Mr. X — I hear his footsteps on the floor above. Because there are zombies outside that have fallen into the windows that I didn’t board up stupidly. Because slimes have settled on the way to the library of the precinct, and one of them is blocking the entrance to the armory — and I’m running out of bullets. The last save was an hour and a half ago, the section ran out of typewriter ribbons — which means that there is no second chance not to lose an hour and a half of the blood obtained and then there is no progress. What to do? What?!

The convulsions of the mutated William Birkin are terrifying to watch. And the fact that he gradually but inevitably loses his human appearance is even more unnerving

I confess that I was pleasantly surprised when I got to the first boss and simply could not defeat him. Physically, I could not, and not because of the enemy himself, but because of my own short-sightedness. Too little ammo. Even with the items scattered around the arena, I didn’t have enough firepower: I used up almost everything I had saved up before the fight, and thought it was okay. That there will be enough leftovers for me — the game will probably throw more.

Not enough, and the game was on the drum. I made too many mistakes — and I paid for it, with a satisfied smirk, loading an hour and a half old save. Perhaps this is the moment that best shows that RE2-2019 understands its progenitor like no other. And at the same time, the players who fell in love with her.

And it’s just nice to see. Especially among the cynicism in which the AAA industry is drowning.

Resident Evil 2 2019 is the rarest example of an almost flawless rethinking of already used material. It looks, sounds and feels so great that the original of more than twenty years ago could not even dream of, but it does not flaunt its technical superiority. She immensely respects the past, but does not dwell on the past and plays with familiar ideas and moments in her own way.

And the industry, which still can’t decide what the difference is between a remake, a re-release and a remaster, finally has someone to learn from! This is how remakes should be done. Now Capcom simply has no excuse in case the hypothetical Resident Evil 8 fails.

Pleased

  • perfectly conveyed the spirit of the original;
  • convenience, as in Resident Evil 7;
  • skillful work with sound and picture;
  • real stress;
  • HUNK and Tofu!

Disappointed

  • unassuming boss design;
  • still no plot;
  • the game ends sooner or later.

Verdict

If the HD remaster of Resident Evil 1 was the best way to get to know the first part, then Resident Evil 2 is the best way to understand why the second part is so loved and respected. It doesn’t matter if you are familiar with the series or not. The old people will wipe away a tear of gratitude, and the newcomers will touch the philosophy of game design, which the gaming industry has long forgotten about. Stock up on green grass for future use!

In my 22 years of experience with Resident Evil, the series has managed to popularize the horror genre, set new standards for third-person action games, reach the peak of its form . .. and then painfully slide down, offering something indistinct numbered parts, then such branches that it was only necessary to grab his head. However, Capcom, suddenly, responsibly approached the seventh «resident» — the new release returned to the right course and turned out to be quite in the spirit of classic survival horror. Although the fans patiently waited and believed that someday the company would still release a remake of the famous second part.

And the wait was not in vain — the updated Resident Evil 2 can safely be called the best part since RE4 and one of the most powerful representatives of the genre. This is one of those rare games from which it is decidedly impossible to tear yourself away until the very credits due to the perfectly adjusted rhythm. The remake does not sag for a second, while managing to constantly keep in suspense the lack of resources, the tenacious dead, gameplay tricks from the past like a small inventory, and the feeling of one’s own vulnerability was forgotten.

Old heroes — new faces

After all, neither Leon nor Claire can throw zombies with a deflection or kick them briskly from a turn. The maximum is to fight back with a knife or a grenade, if they are in your pockets. The gloomy atmosphere is also helped by the location of the camera — the angle can hardly be called uncomfortable, but the viewing angle is still very limited. A walking corpse quietly crept up from the back, which suddenly pounces on the hero, can scare you to a scream.

In the remake, even shooting helps to create a viscous sense of danger. Characters need to stand for a couple of seconds before and after the shot to aim properly, otherwise the bullets will fly with a large spread. In relatively calm situations, you don’t pay too much attention at this moment — you stop, wait, BANG-BANG, run on. But when the zombies are coming from all sides or getting very close, there is no time to calibrate the shots. In a panic, you begin to move away, firing randomly in the direction of the target. Do you think it’s almost impossible to miss with a pistol at close range? Ha, Resident Evil 2 will convince you and make you nervously squeeze the controller in your hands.

How much this feature gives the game, you can see if you find a weapon with a laser pointer. It allows you to fire at the right point even when moving, but you don’t really want to return to such weapons — there is a mean feeling that with this laser you are stealing an important component of immersion from the project.

Well, let’s say, quack

I do not rule out that someone will complain about too tenacious dead. They are really capable of taking a fair amount of lead into themselves, even in the head. You can turn the face of the next zombie into a bloody mess (the level of cruelty in the remake is turned up to the maximum), and the «zipper» will keep stepping forward. However, Resident Evil (before the series left for Hollywood action movies) never demanded to kill everyone, everywhere. With limited ammo and healing resources, the best option is to run, shooting only those who block very narrow passages with themselves. Therefore, over time, you learn to save ammunition and figure out how best to get around the dead. Moreover, they are pretty stupid guys, as zombies should be, so they can be lured out, freeing their way further. 9$%* is like that!!!!”. And a desperate flight from biological weapons begins, which, with its measured, heavy (approaching!) Steps behind your back, can bring you to a nervous breakdown.

You are rushing, forgetting where you were going before, and then suddenly a previously unkilled zombie grabs by the leg, on which it became a pity to waste cartridges. In those seconds while you fight back, you remember that a couple more are walking down the stairs, since you didn’t seem to plan to return there, so you left them for a walk. Of course, the dead, as luck would have it, cannot be run around, and the clip is hardly half full. In the meantime, the top is heard from behind … TOP … TOP … And, damn it, do not go to the next location to escape behind the door, because in 20 years the mutants have learned how to open them!

I would not call Resident Evil 2 the most frightening horror game, since Alien: Isolation is unlikely to be surpassed by anyone, but at such moments it becomes really scary. Although, it would seem, the Tyrant is quite harmless and allows you to run from yourself even around the table. On the other hand, he knows how to escalate to all five points, and the very implementation of the stubborn pursuer is worthy of praise.

Phew, these definitely won’t fit.

Just like locations remade from scratch. They retained the familiar features of the original — longtime fans will be interested to see where, how and what they changed. The police station has become more believable, and exploring it and finding the codes for the locks is a pleasure, especially when you more or less memorize the map. The second half of the game has been remade much more seriously — especially in the laboratory, where after the tragedy, time seems to have frozen, so you involuntarily slow down and consider the consequences of the infection in complete silence.

Finding keys with different emblems and riddles remained in place, but these tasks have become quite simple. It feels like they were left here just for old school gamers as nice references and intentional gaming conventions. Who in their right mind would mark corks like chess pieces and then vaguely write on the board their correct positions to open a locked door? In reality — no one, their hands would be torn off for this, but in the virtual world it’s easy.

Small episodes for Adu and Sherry have changed no less interesting. If the first one can somehow be called the next in the footsteps of the original version, then a couple of tens of minutes, which is allotted to control the girl, turned out to be one of the brightest in the game. Not so much by hiding from danger, but by more revealing the identity of the Raccoon City police chief.

Who recognizes the lane?

In general, the game has added dialogues and additional scenes that allow you to better understand the motivation of some characters and the manipulation of others. Although the plot still remained simple and somewhere even stupid. Fortunately, he is far from being in the foreground, so there is not much point in clinging to him. There is enough history to push the heroes to move forward, and then the gameplay does its exciting job.

It’s the gameplay that makes the remake so devilishly compelling. This is perhaps the perfect example of a fusion of old ideas and the latest technology, which will satisfy old fans of the series, and can attract newcomers to it. Capcom has done a great job of preserving the atmosphere of the original and without losing the old feel in a new form. That 20 years ago, that now it’s creepy to explore Resident Evil 2, and in some places it’s scary, especially when you didn’t calculate with cartridges and first-aid kits. Each gameplay element and location, sound, light, all the little things are polished to a shine and serve only one purpose — not to let you out of the tenacious clutches of the infected Raccoon City for a minute. So don’t be surprised if you sit up until morning saving Leon or Claire.

For those who don’t have enough storyline campaign, designed for 4-5 hours (for one character), additional modes for Hunk and tofu were left in the game. And that’s not all — in mid-February, Capcom will begin releasing free story chapters that will tell about the mayor’s daughter, an arms dealer and an operative who died in the city. I hope the quality of additions will be no worse than the main game.

Advantages of :

  • the remake constantly keeps you in suspense;
  • perfectly tuned rhythm and short duration, thanks to which the game flies by in one breath;
  • an interesting fusion of old ideas and new technologies;
  • Incredible Tyrant as a creepy stalker;
  • the presence of hardcore difficulty with a limited number of saves. Wanted like before?

Flaws :

  • you can find fault with little things, and the plot is clearly not very inventive, but otherwise it is an exemplary survival horror.

Graphics

Capcom’s own engine delivers stunning visuals, working beautifully with everything from lighting to animations. Since Resident Evil 7, optimization has improved markedly, so the game is also not too demanding on the PC, if you do not twist everything to the maximum.

Sound

Due to the sudden screech of liquor behind you, you can launch the controller into the monitor, and running past the zombies, you almost physically feel how cold hands reach for your neck. Be sure to play with headphones — there will be a lot of impressions.

Single game

A creepy atmosphere remake can be safely put on the same level as Resident Evil 4 and the first Dead Space. Perfectly tuned rhythm, polished gameplay and constant tension will not let you break away from the game until the very end.
