Red Dead Redemption 2 cheats being present in the game shouldn’t be a big surprise — the first of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption games had them, as had the Grand Theft Auto series.
That said, the place to enter Red Dead Redemption 2 cheats is a little hidden, so you’d be forgiven for even noticing they were even there.

How to enter cheat codes in Red Dead Redemption 2
To enter cheats into Red Dead Redemption 2, pause the game, then access Settings. Next, press Triangle (or Y on Xbox), as suggested in the bottom right corner.
You’ll then come to a long Red Dead Redemption 2 cheats list. They will all be locked, and by entering codes, you can have them become available. Press Triangle (or Y on Xbox) to do this.
Now, any cheats that have been already unlocked will be available to toggle on and off, meaning you only have to enter each cheat once to access it whenever you like.
Of course, as soon as you enable it, you’ll get a warning — activating a cheat means you cannot save your single player progress, or collect Trophies or Achievements. In short — anything you do from then on won’t count.

There is also the chance there will be Rockstar Social Club cheats — as with the original Red Dead Redemption — later down the line at some point, but there’s no sign of those just yet.

Again, remember any Red Dead 2 cheats activated will disable the ability to unlock Achievements or Trophies for the duration of that playthrough. The good news is it won’t let you save your progress, so it allows you to fully let your hair down before you get back to the adventure. Have fun!

How to unlock cheats with newspapers in Red Dead Redemption 2
As mentioned above, there are certain requirements in the form of Newspapers, which are sold at vendors in settlements. You need to own the corresponding Newspaper in order to unlock the cheat, which is printed at the bottom if you flip it over, like so:
See Abundance is the dullest desire at the bottom? Own this newspaper and enter the cheat to unlock Infinite Ammo.
If you try to enter these types of cheats ahead of time, the game will give you an error message saying ‘You do not meet the prerequisites to unlock this cheat’.
There are three types of different newspapers, which will release new editions throughout the story. You can choose to purchase them from Valentine (New Hanover Gazette), Strawberry (Blackwater Ledger) and Rhodes (Saint Denis Times) as you go, or wait until the end to catch up on the back catalogue.
For some reason there are times where you cannot buy a newspaper from a vendor. If you come across this, we recommend coming back later to try again. As far as we understand, none are missable, so don’t sweat it if you pass one by.

Red Dead Redemption 2 newspaper cheats
Some cheats are locked behind newspapers, which are sold in shops in certain towns at particular points in the single-player game.
Only certain issues of each of the three newspapers will give you access to the cheat codes, and they’re only able to be purchased in certain towns.
You can buy the Hanover Gazette at Annesburg or Valentine, the Saint Denis Times at Rhodes or Saint Denis, and the Blackwater Ledger at Strawberry or Blackwater.
All the issues for the newspapers are available after the prologue, but if you want certain cheats beforehand, here is where you can get them:
- Abundance is the dullest desire – Gives you infinite ammunition (Buy the Hanover Gazette no. 27 during or after Chapter 1)
- Greed is American virtue – Gives you a set of heavy weapons (Buy the Saint Denis Times no. 46 after the mission Advertising, the New American Art in Chapter 3)
- You long for sight and see nothing – Removes the fog from the map (Buy the Saint Denis Times no.
47 after the mission Blood Feuds, Ancient and Modern in Chapter 3.) - Virtue unearned is not virtue – Gives your maximum honor (Buy the Saint Denis Times no. 48 after the mission Urban Pleasures in Chapter 4)
- The lucky be strong evermore – Gives you infinite Stamina (Buy the Saint Denis Times no. 49 after completing Chapter 5)

- Would you be happier as a clown? – Spawns a circus wagon (Buy the Saint Denis Times no. 54 after completing the Epilogue)
Red Dead Redemption 2 money glitch
As if typing the instant $500 cheat is not enough, there is also a glitch (cheers to IntenseReality on YouTube) where you can repeatedly load up saves to get as many gold nuggets as you want.
The best bit is that this glitch doesn’t trigger the disabling of progress or any achievements or trophies you’re working towards. It reportedly still works as of October 2020.
To do the Red Dead Redemption 2 money glitch, you will need to do the following:
- Go to the north of Grizzlies East and find the shack. It’s close to Fairvale Shanty on the map
- Turn off Autosave, then save the game
- Go into the shack and pick up the gold nugget inside the chest on the table
- Save the game, then load the save game you just saved.
- Ride back up to the shack and you’ll find the nugget has respawned
How to enter RDR2 cheat codes
As for how to enter the text-based cheat codes into Red Dead Redemption 2, it is relatively easy. To bring up the cheats menu, simply perform the following:
- Pause the game and enter the settings menu.
- Press the button indicated on the bottom-right corner (Y on Xbox controllers and Triangle on PS4 controllers)
- Press Y on Xbox pads or Triangle on PS4 pads to bring up the keyboard and text prompt to enter the cheat.
- Once accepted, the cheats can be toggled on and off.
Note that once you enable a cheat, you won’t be able to save your single-player progress, nor will you be able to collect any achievements or trophies. Some cheats also require a back catalogue of newspapers which are available to buy during the game’s single-player mode.
RDR2 console commands
Lots of games on PC have a console commands menu, but Red Dead Redemption 2 does not have one. Pressing the Tilde key will not bring up a prompt for console commands. However, the PC version does have access to the same cheats menu as the console versions, so you’ll be able to enter them as detailed above.
RDR2 cheat engine
While there is no console commands option, there is an alternative. You may have seen some references to people using a trainer app like Cheat Engine with Red Dead Redemption 2. These apps can be set up to edit properties, like giving your character a set amount of money.
The RDR2 trainer files currently available don’t seem to work with the latest version of the game, with more recent replies on the Fearless Revolution forum post asking for updates. There is an alternative mod available, called Lenny’s Simple Trainer, which will give you a large number of cheats to use. It’s important to follow installation instructions to the letter, especially those points about configuration, disabling auto-saves, and especially any instructions to remove it before playing the game online.
Neither of these trainers give you the cheats in multiplayer mode, and we stress that you need to remove all the trainer’s files before playing online. This is so your account doesn’t get banned by Rockstar.
