Why Another Ratchet and Clank Game is Years Away

Insomniac Games’ upcoming slate of Marvel projects means players will likely have to wait a few years for a brand-new Ratchet and Clank game.
Since its release in 2021, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has played an important role in the PlayStation ecosystem. Not only has the duo’s latest outing become a critical hit, but it’s also done a great job showcasing the power of the PS5. Between its debut and Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, Insomniac Games’ reputation within Sony’s first-party family has been solidified over that time period as well.
Despite all of these accolades, it looks like fans will have to wait before they can get their hands on a new Ratchet and Clank game, though. As it stands right now, several factors are pulling Insomniac Games’ attention in other directions. All of which means it’s likely going to be several years before the Lombax and his robotic partner return with a brand-new adventure.

Insomniac Games’ Schedule
One of the biggest features of the PS5 era so far has been Insomniac Games’ ability to quickly develop and release acclaimed titles. Since the debut of Sony’s latest console, players have already been treated to the aforementioned Miles Morales and Rift Apart. The publisher’s PlayStation Showcase event in 2021 made it clear that this trend will continue for some time to come as well. Beyond Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s 2023 release date, Marvel’s Wolverine is also already in production.
The existence of Insomniac’s upcoming Marvel projects means it’s unlikely that Ratchet and Clank will feature in its plans for some time. Despite building a reputation for efficiency and quality, it’s hard to imagine the studio having the bandwidth to quickly create another entry in its long-running franchise as well.
Even though Wolverine is an established hero, it’s important to remember that Insomniac’s game will still be a new IP. Getting the narrative and mechanical parts of that process right is likely going to be an almost all-hands-on-deck task that lasts for years.
Insomniac Games’ Rumored Titles
While all rumors and insider leaks should be taken with a pinch of salt, there’s evidence that suggests Insomniac Games is exploring other titles beyond its announced Marvel projects. The idea of a multiplayer experience, for example, has popped up online multiple times since the release of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. Even though Insomniac’s multi-team structure makes it easy to imagine it exploring other ideas right now, it’s unclear what franchise the leak relates to.
Even if the game in question turns out to be real, and tied to Ratchet and Clank’s multiplayer past in some way, it’s unlikely that players will even hear about it for years. Beyond focusing its marketing output on its upcoming Marvel project, Insomniac will also likely spend significant time making sure the game is sound conceptually and mechanically.
Players only have to look at Naughty Dog and The Last of Us multiplayer spin-off for an example of how time-consuming it can be to work on a game like the one that’s been rumored.
Ratchet and Clank’s Future
Although all signs point to Insomniac Games’ attention being dominated by its announced and rumored projects for the next few years, that doesn’t mean Ratchet and Clank fans should lose all hope. Between the critical success of Rift Apart and the franchise’s wider importance to Sony, it’s a fairly safe bet that a new game will happen at some point in the future. Considering the studio has remained devoted to the duo since the PS2 era, it’s hard to see that changing either.
While Rift Apart ended on a wholesome note, Insomniac also planted several seeds that were clearly geared toward the franchise’s long-term future. Beyond the introduction and storytelling potential of Rivet and Kit, multiple questions were notably left unanswered on the topic of Ratchet’s own past as well.
Both of these factors suggest that a new Ratchet and Clank game will happen eventually, several years down the line from now.

Insomniac Games notes that this is a great place to start for the Ratchet & Clank franchise, as it will be a «stand-alone storyline,» but it will reward fans of the series that began in 2002 on the PS2 with «deeper layers of connection to previous games.»Insomniac also revealed Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s box art, key art, pre-order bonuses, and the digital deluxe edition, all of which you can see below.

Pre-orders have officially opened for Rift Apart, and those who do so will unlock the Carbonox armor from 2003’s Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, all updated with «high-definition materials, lighting responses, and ray-traced reflections.» Those who pre-order the game will also receive an early-unlock of the Pixelizer weapon, the retro-blaster from 2016’s Ratchet & Clank.
The Digital Deluxe Edition, which will cost $79.99 USD, will grant players five additional armor sets, 20 Raritanium for upgrading weapons, and a sticker pack to use in Ratchet & Clank’s first ever photo mode.
Furthermore, also included are a digital artbook and digital soundtrack.
Participating retailers in the US and Canada will also have a Special Physical Launch Edition of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart that will retail for $69.99 USD/$89.99 CAD. This will include a code for the pre-order bonuses mentioned above.LoadingInsomniac also teased that, while it isn’t ready to reveal the new playable Lombax’s name that had been previously teased, it mentions that we should «hang in there» and that we will be «feeling rosy soon.»
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was announced at the PS5 reveal event back in June 2020. It promised that «Players will seamlessly travel through different dimensions in mid-gameplay, thanks to PS5’s ultra-high speed SSD. The DualSense wireless controller brings combat to life, with haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers adding powerful sensations that increase immersion in combat.»

French retail store listing leaks possible PS5 bundle with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Initial text: PlayStation 5 available from November 2020. Since then, it has been almost completely inaccessible around the world. Demand for the PS5 is simply too high, and additional factors such as component shortages and slow logistics are preventing further shipments.
But that doesn’t mean Sony isn’t exploring ways to keep the PS5 in the minds of gamers. For example, a new leak suggests that a PS5 bundle with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart included could be one of the ways Sony has found to attract consumers to its console.
The rumor comes from a French retailer. Boulanger. An employee or someone else with access to Boulanger’s product database has discovered a bundle list that includes the standard PS5 edition and Ratche, the French translation of Ratchet. Product price is 599 euros (about 3.
710.00 reais). No additional information is given about the product, and no release date is given. In other words, this is clearly an unreliable leak without further verification.

The only other evidence of a possible PS5 package with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart that the source provides is not particularly reliable, but interesting nonetheless. He notes that Sony has historically bundled its consoles with Ratchet & Clank games. Several PS3 packs have already been released, including one with the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy and one with Ratchet & Clank All 4. Another pack shown includes the PS Vita with the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy.
In other words, there have already been similar packages, so there is a precedent. However, the information does not seem to be reliable enough.
This is not the first time Sony has released such a package.
PS5 with Ratchet and Clank looking too good?
On the one hand, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be the launch of an entirely new game. Given the current popularity of the PS5 and its original games, there would be no reason for Sony to bundle a game with the console anytime soon. Secondly, these previous kits have historically included the Ratchet & Clank package at no additional cost. However, the package presented on Boulanger’s website costs an impressive 599 euros. That’s €100 more than the PS5 alone, and even more expensive than Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will cost €70 separately.
This supposedly leaked list of Boulanger products has two possible possibilities:
- First, the information is completely false, or the image is false information entered into the company’s system by someone with access to Boulanger’s computers.
- The second (and even more likely) is that this is the store’s own kit, where they put two products that were originally sold separately in a kit, call it a kit, and charge more than the retail price. This is not uncommon, given the shortage of PS5 in the world.
Sony will most likely offer a bundle for the PS5 in the future. It could even happen in 2021, perhaps with games like Miles Morales Spider-Man or Demon Souls. It’s much more likely that such a pack will be released in the future when the PS5 doesn’t sell out right away. And it’s even more likely that it won’t include a brand new game released in the last six months.
Ratchet & Clank Coming Soon
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, a 2013 sequel that doesn’t take into account the PS4 reboot events, promises to «satisfy those who crave more games that make the most of the PlayStation 5» .
Ratchet and Clank are back! Help them stop the robot emperor who wants to conquer the multidimensional worlds and whose next goal is precisely their universe.
