How to set up a baitrunner on a carp reel

I am very surprised by the fact that, for some reason, has become an inspiration for many young and, strangely, seasoned adherents of the style of modern carp fishing. Perhaps this is due to the fact that there are not so many popularizers on the topic of carp fishing in our country, so there is a shortage of practical videos and handwritten materials. I try myself in this field, something works out, but it doesn’t work anymore, probably that’s why after the release of the last few films and videos on the Internet, they began to bombard me with various questions on the topic of carp fishing, moreover, many questions are so complex that they introduce me to the real world. stupor because I don’t know how to answer them.
Friends, I really still do not consider myself an opinion leader and a person who can give good advice, since I myself am in the position of a first-year applicant at a large institute of Russian carp fishing.
Therefore, my answers to your carp questions are more superficial or look like my opinion and nothing more. And every time I emphasize this, that I am learning myself and will continue to learn how to catch carp. Well, in any case, if there are questioners, they cannot be ignored, even in the holy scripture it is written that the questioner should be given what he wants, or at least try to do it if the intentions of the questioner are good.
I am writing all this to the fact that having embarked on the skis of popularizing modern styles of bottom fishing, I, willy-nilly, must improve myself and, most importantly, help others.
By the way, one of the most popular questions now, which actually motivated me to write this article, is related to choosing the right carp reels, and specifically, reels equipped with a baitrunner system. There are a lot of these questions now, and their number has greatly increased, especially after the release of my next program, where I catch carps with my family on the commercial reservoir «Chistye Prudy» in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
In that story, I actively use Shimano Big Baitrunner XTA reels, which are now my favorite.
It’s just that I received about fifty letters by e-mail, many of which sounded banal, but at the same time, an interesting question on how to properly set up the “baitrunner” system and what I generally think about it. People asked me how to work with a baitrunner in relation to various fishing conditions, focusing on the type of reservoir and the weight of the intended trophies. Despite my inner hesitations, I decided to answer this question with this small publication, with this I will express my respect for the fishing audience that respects my opinion.
In order. To begin with, I will tell you what a «baitrunner» is. Literally translated «beitrunner» is a «running nozzle». Such a system is used exclusively for the inertialess type of coils. Its main purpose is to ensure free and unhindered dropping of the fishing line in the process of biting fish.
The baitrunner is very relevant when fishing with self-cutting bottom rigs, especially when the weight of the trophies is such that a scaly creature can easily tear the rig from the bottom with the weight of its body. According to information, initially this system was created for trophy catching of predatory fish species on a dead fish, later it tightly entered the everyday life of carp anglers, as a result, it took a dominant position in this type of fishing.
In general, the baitrunner system can greatly facilitate the process of fishing. Moreover, using these reels, the angler will have the opportunity to avoid pulling the rod into the water column during the strongest bite of the fish. If you set up the baitrunner and front clutch correctly, the mechanism will work in a fixed mode so accurately and correctly that not a single trophy, no matter how big or heavy, will get off the hook. Initially, the baitrunner mechanism itself needs to be adjusted for specific situations, it can be made very sensitive or slower.
Each particular coil with a baitrunner system has its own individual settings, by and large, they are all very simple, the main thing is to try playing with them in order to achieve maximum efficiency.
In my arsenal there were more than ten models of reels equipped with a baitrunner system, and most often the mechanism of the system itself looks externally or is presented in the form of a special bracket on the back of the reel, which is somewhat similar to the rear clutch.
I repeat that it is very easy to use the baitrunner system, you just need to figure out how the baitrunner turns on before fishing, adjust the speed of the line reeling by twisting a special roller located at the back of the reel and work out the method of turning off the baitrunner when hooking.
The sequence of actions for fishing with a baitrunner system on a reel is as follows. The rig is cast with the baitraner system turned off. Next, the slack of the fishing line is selected using a reel.
It is important to stretch the line so that it takes the most linear position in the water. Then the rod is placed on the rack. Now the baitrunner system is turned on using the lever on the coil. When biting, even the most powerful and aggressive, the rod will continue to stand motionless on the racks, and the line will be bled from the spool under the pressure of the spotted fish. To hook a fish, you must turn off the baitrunner.
In no case should you hook with the baitrunner turned on, if doing this, a nuisance can happen, resulting in entanglement and loss of the trophy. Therefore, I repeat, before hooking, you need to turn off the baitrunner. In the event that you feel a powerful jerk of the fish after hooking it, the main friction on the reel will instantly work, which will help to pacify the fish during the fight. Yes, I have not yet said that the baitrunner system, in addition to turning it off with the help of a lever, can also be turned off by turning the handle of the reel itself.
Everything is very simple.
Now a few words about Shimano Big Baitrunner XT-A carp reels, which I consider to be the standard of engines equipped with a baitrunner system. And what is so special about them that made me buy them, and not some other top-class meat grinders for catching trophy carp and grass carp.
Firstly, speaking from the point of view of the baitrunner system, Shimano Big Baitrunner XT-A has the most accurate system I have ever seen. In the concept of accuracy, I put the ability to adjust this reel for any fishing conditions and a specific weight of the trophy. At the back of the coil there is a very convenient toggle switch that allows you to set the speed of the baitrunner with jeweler’s precision, relax or tighten it if necessary. By myself, I can say that I have not seen such a setting in other, even expensive engines.
Why is this important to me personally? I often fish on fast-flowing rivers, hunt for large carp and catfish.
For fishing on the river, it is very important that when the baitrunner system is turned on, the force of the water flow is not capable of spontaneously removing the line from the spool, thereby simulating false bites. On the Shimano Big Baitrunner XT-A reel, you can just set up the baitrunner so that it holds back the onslaught of the stream, controls the main line, not allowing it to be reeled in. On the Shimano Big Baitrunner XT-A reel, you can turn on the almost clamped baitrunner mode, this allows you to catch the lightest loads in the equipment, contributing to self-setting.
After all, very often there are situations when you have to catch on muddy mud, where the weight of the working sinkers reaches 60 grams, so it is important to create additional tension in the main line, which will allow, after the fish twitches with a hook in its mouth, to drive the hook deeper into it. lip, while allowing it to unhinderedly wind the line. On a tightened baitrunner, it is very convenient to fish among snags and dense algae under water, thereby preventing fish from swimming too long distances from the fishing point after the notch, and all this can be configured in Shimano Big Baitrunner XT-A reels.
