Guide for Pure Football — Story walkthrough

Tutorial

As you load up the game, you will be asked if you want to try the tutorial. You will definitely want to do the tutorial. Not only is the game very different from FIFA or Pro Evo, but there is an achievement at stake. If you accidentally rejected the tutorial, you can find the option under the ‘Play’ menu.

There are 8 stages to the tutorial.
Shot Meter: Hold B to shoot, releasing in the green zone for a safe shot.
Pure Shot: Hold B to shoot, releasing in the white zone for a pure shot.
Pure Shot Meter: Hit shots on target (without scoring) to fill up the Pure Shot Meter. Once full, hit B to strike a pure shot.
Strafe: Hold LT to follow your opponent and tackle them when close enough.
Slide Tackle: Press X to slide tackle your opponent. Try to avoid filling up the Foul Meter.
Sprint Burst: Hit RT to burst when the Sprint Meter is full.
Pure Cross: When you see a blue arrow, hold X, releasing in the white zone for a pure cross. Hold and release B to score from the incoming cross.
Pure Points: Reach 200 PP by performing successful actions. Try scoring from pure crosses for easy pure points.

Complete each of the above tutorial objectives for the «Pure Participation» achievement.

Campaign

Once you have completed the tutorial, move to the ‘Campaign’ menu and select ‘New Campaign’. You will need to play a minimum of three campaigns, with your created player finishing as a defender, midfielder and a striker, rated as 4+ stars.

Here’s what you should be planning to do for your three campaigns. In the first campaign, try to progress to the later venues, unlocking as many players as you can along the way, and upgrading your captain where possible. Once you have unlocked all venues, try to complete a few of the higher ranked teams. I managed to unlock all players for England, Germany and Netherlands in my first campaign.

In your second campaign, go through as many venues as you can once more, but this time do not upgrade your captain. There are some players that will not appear in your opponent’s starting line-up, unless you have a low rated captain. You should hopefully be able to unlock all players from Spain and Argentina, along with a host of other nations in this campaign. Spain and Argentina both contain players (Marchena, especially) that will not unlock unless you have a low rated captain.

In your third campaign, you should solely focus on the remaining teams. Start targeting the highest ranked teams, as they will require you to win events to unlock the later venues. Once you have at least one event with each of the remaining national teams, keep replaying them to unlock the remaining players. Once you have all players, start winning unique events again to try to finish in the top 8 to qualify for the final tournament.

Player/Team Creation

Upon selecting ‘New Campaign’, you have several options for your Captain, including Player ID, Position and Features. When you are satisfied, ‘Advance’ to be thrown into a legends match with the likes of Cantona, Bergkamp, Pele and Schmeichel on your team. Great! To finish the match, simply score 2 goals.

Upon finishing the Legends match, you are able to create a team. Change the Team ID, the Squad and the Kits, before advancing once more. It is not really necessary to change your squad, as all players are rated at 1 star anyway. Once you have created your team, you are told that you have 28 days to climb the ranks and qualify for the final tournament as one of the top 8 teams.

Events and Player Unlocks

There are a variety of venues, each with 4 events. Complete unique events to unlock later venues. Completing the same event twice will not count towards unlocking new venues.

Enter the first venue and you will see information about ‘Player Unlocks’. Each time you match up against any team (except Brazil and any Legends team), your opponents have various objectives for you to complete. Complete those objectives, and you will be able to select that player to play for your team in later events. You can unlock a maximum of five players from any one match. You can view your Player Unlock progress during a match by accessing the pause menu, where you can also find useful statistics.

Complete any two events within the first venue to unlock a second venue. This will also unlock the «One Small Step» achievement.

Unlocked players are lost at the end of the campaign, but you only need to unlock a player once for the «Lopsided Loyalty» and «A League of Your Own» achievements. It is recommended that you copy the list of players from the Unlockable Players page to a personal document, so that you can keep a record of all players unlocked during your campaigns. There is no in-game way to track players unlocked in previous campaigns.

The events within the first venue are the easiest in the campaign. As such, you should be aiming to unlock all five players from one team in a single game for the «Rude Guest» achievement. You can retry if you do not complete the objectives first time. You can also lower the difficulty to make the game (and the player unlock requirements) even easier.

Unlock all the players from one nation for the «Lopsided Loyalty» achievement, and unlock all national players for the «A League of Your Own» achievement.

Upgrading Your Captain

Participating and winning events earns you Pure Points, which can be used to upgrade your captain. Try to select events that you are capable of winning. Also, try to target tournaments, as these will give you the chance of playing two or three matches on a given day, to unlock more players and earn more Pure Points. By the end of each of the three campaigns, you want your captain to be rated at 4 stars. It is not really necessary to upgrade your player past this point. Any unspent Pure Points at the end of the campaign can go towards the «Pure Persistence» achievement, which is obtained by earning 100,000 pure points outside of the campaign. Note that if you retry events, you will not earn as many Pure Points.

At some point throughout your career, it is likely that your captain will be named Man of the Match. This will unlock the «Captain Fantastic» achievement. The requirements for this depend on the position of your captain. Generally speaking, scoring lots of goals with your captain in any match is a good way to win man of the match, regardless of their position.

Weekly Objectives

During the first three weeks, you have various objectives to complete. These can be viewed from Day 2 onwards, and are related to the position of your created captain. A striker’s set of challenges will be based on goals, pure shots and skill shots. A midfielder’s set of challenges are based on goals, power shots and tackles. A defender’s set of challenges are based on goals, tackles and clean sheets. Complete all three challenges within a week for the chance to play in a Legends match. In these matches you cannot unlock players, but you are given an objective and a large Pure Points bonus for winning. You do not have to win or even participate in these events for any of the game’s achievement, but they help with upgrading your captain. For Week 4, your objective is simply to finish in the top 8 to qualify for the final tournament.

Working your way through the Campaign

Once you have finished the first 4 weeks, you will enter in to the final tournament, providing of course that your club are ranked in the top 8. If you fail to qualify for the tournament by finishing in the top 8, you will get another chance to qualify in a 5 minute match against England. The final tournament is a knockout tournament, and so you only have to win 3 games. Win the three games for the «29 Days Later» achievement.

If you finished the campaign with your captain rated at 4 stars or above, you will also unlock the achievement specific to that position. You will need to create two new campaigns for the other two positions. Note that 60,000 Pure Points (minimum) are needed to upgrade your captain to 4 stars. You must win the Final Tournament for the following achievements.

After completing the final tournament, you are given one last chance to upgrade your captain. After this, you will be asked whether or not you want to share your player with the world. Select ‘Yes’ for the «All World» achievement. If you selected ‘No’ by accident, don’t worry. You can simply load your saved game, and you will be given the option to share your player once more.

Venues

Assuming you unlock all venues in the campaign, and win a match in each, you should have made great progress towards the «Pitch-Hiker» achievement. However, you may not unlock the achievement, as two of the venues do not appear in the campaign. The order in which the venues unlock are not consistant with each playthrough.

Events needed to unlock new venues:
Venue 1, Unlocked at start of campaign.
Venue 2, Unlocked after completing 2 events.
Vanue 3, Unlocked after completing 4 events.
Venue 4, Unlocked after completing 8 events.
Venue 5, Unlocked after completing 11 events.
Venue 6, Unlocked after completing 14 events.
Venue 7, Unlocked after completing 17 events.
Venue 8: Unlocked after completing 20 events.

Campaign venues:
The Canals, Amsterdam.
The Factory, Milan.
The Glass House, Liverpool.
The Grounds, Barcelona.
The Mountain, Munich.
The Port, Marseille.
The Ring, Madrid.
The River, London.

After winning the Week 3 Legends event, you will unlock another venue (The Underground). A final venue (The Rooftop, Capetown) will also unlock after winning the final tournament. Win in each of the above venues for the «Pitch-Hiker» achievement. Note that this can also be done in Play mode, either against AI or against a second controller, setting the game to First To 2 goals.

Miscellaneous Achievements

All Modes/Play Anyone

Chemistry: To have a team with immediate chemistry, all four outfield players must play (or have played) for the same club at the time of the game’s release. Go to the ‘Create’ menu and ‘Create Team’. Edit the squad so that four outfield players are from the same team. Examples (taken from SaltyTON’s solution) are:

Arsenal: Emmanuel Eboué, Eduardo Da Silva, William Gallas, Samir Nasri, Tomáš Rosický, Theo Walcott.
Barcelona: Andrés Iniesta, Thierry Henry, Lionel Messi, Xavi.
Chelsea: Nicolas Anelka, Michael Ballack, José Bosingwa, Ashley Cole, Deco, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou, John Terry.
Liverpool: Daniel Agger, Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Fernando Torres.
Manchester United: Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher, Nani, Wayne Rooney.
Real Madrid: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart.
Tottenham Hotspur: Sébastien Bassong, Peter Crouch, Alan Hutton, Jermain Defoe, Niko Kranjcar, Luka Modric.

Clean Sheet: Simply win any game without conceding a goal for the «Laundry Day» achievement. Have a second controller host a First to 2 match and score two own goals.

First Shot: Have a second controller host a First to 2 match, and get them to pass back to their goalkeeper. Hold A to tackle the goalkeeper and shoot to score.

Four Controllers: For this achievement, start a First to 2 match with four controllers all on one team. You can also use peripherals. When the game starts, score 2 own goals to finish the match.

Full House: Play a First to 5 match against a second controller. Have the second controller pass to their goalkeeper, and score 3 goals with one player. For the assists, get the same player to cross balls to other players.

Goalkeeper: Have a second controller host a First to 2 match, and get them to pass back to their goalkeeper. Hold Y to tackle the goalkeeper with your goalkeeper. If close enough, the goalkeeper should score.

Late Goal: Have a second controller host a 3 minute match and have them pass back to the goalkeeper. In the dying seconds, hold A to tackle the goalkeeper and score.

No Shots: Have a second controller host a First to 2 match and score two own goals.

Pure Points: Score loads of goals in a match to earn Pure Points. Score goals within a short space of time to increase your multiplier.

Off the Post: This one is a little bit difficult, and requires a little bit of luck. However, as you need to score over 1,000 goals in total, it is very likely that you will score at least one goal after hitting the post.

Outfield Players: Have a second controller host a First to 4 match. Scoring with the two most advanced players is easy, as you can switch between them at will at the start of the match. For the other two outfield players, have your opponent play the ball near them. Now switch to them and follow the ball, as it is passed to the opponent’s goalkeeper. Now tackle the goalkeeper and score.

Pure Difficulty: Have a second controller host a First to 2 match. Have them be England, whilst you are Scotland. On the settings menu, change the difficult to ‘Pure’. When the game starts, score two own goals with the second controller.

Pure Points: In ‘Play’ mode, outscore an opponent by at least 1,000 Pure Points. Play a 5 minute match and score multiple goals. Score goals within quick succession to increase your multiplier.

Pure Power Shots: Play on easy against an AI opponent in a 10 minute match. Continually shoot with Pure Power shots, when you are close to the goal. If you score 4 in a row, you should unlock the achievement immediately. You can also play against a second controller.

Cumulative

Come Back: Host a First to 5 match. Score three own goals at the start, and then pass the ball to your second controller opposition. Score five own goals to win the game. Do this five times for the achievement.

Goals: For this achievement, you must score a total of 1,000 goals across all game modes. It is possible to get this offline during your (minimum) three campaigns, but you can easily increase the amount of goals through the online boosting that you will need to do. Note that own goals do not count.

Headers: Scoring headers is mostly done by completing crosses, either in regular play, or direct from corners. Try to release the B button in the white (pure) zone for the best chance of scoring. Score 50 headers across all game modes for this achievement.

Penalty Saves: Save penalties by diving with the B button. You can either give penalties away by fouling opponents repeatedly (not on easy), or end a game with a draw for a penalty shoot-out. It might be worth pairing this with the «Serial Thriller» achievement (below).

Penalty Shoot-Outs: To win penalty shoot-outs, end the game with a draw. Whilst this can done across any game mode, it is easier to play 3 Minute matches against a second controller. Shoot down the centre with your second controller to save penalties, which will also assist you with the «Pure Premonition» achievement.

Pure Points: In one session, you must earn at least 10,000 Pure Points. As long as you play several games without exiting the game, you should earn this with ease. Score multiple goals within a short space of time to increase your multiplier to earn more Pure points.

Pure Power Shots: These are completed by holding B and releasing in the white (pure) zone, and scoring. Score 10 Pure Power shots across all game modes for this achievement.

Skill Shots: These are completed by holding RB whilst shooting (with B). Release in the white (pure) zone for a better chance of scoring.

Tackles: Perform slide tackles with X, and regular tackles with LT or A. Complete 300 tackles across all game modes for this achievement. Turn the game to easy to turn off the foul meter to make slide tackling easier.

Travelling: This is not exactly one that you can plan. You must travel 100 km in total across all game modes.

Volleys: Much like the headers, volleys are scored by completing crosses, either in regular play, or direct from corners. There does not seem to be any indication as to whether your player will header or volley the ball, but with corners, try to aim for the player on the edge of the box. Try to release the B button in the white (pure) zone for the best chance of scoring. Score 15 volleys across all game modes for this achievement.
