The free PlayStation Plus games for April 2022 are available now for PS4 and PS5 gamers to claim for their digital libraries.

PlayStation Plus subscribers know that the first Tuesday of every month brings with it a fresh batch of new free games to claim. As expected, Tuesday, April 5 has brought PlayStation Plus subscribers three new games that they can claim now and add to their digital libraries.

The free PS Plus games for April 2022 are headlined by Hood: Outlaws & Legends, a multiplayer-centric medieval fantasy game inspired by Robin Hood. Hood: Outlaws & Legends is a cross-gen game, but instead of only one version being available as subscribers have seen in the past, both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game are available for PS Plus subscribers to claim for April 2022. This way PS5 gamers can check out the version that properly takes advantage of the new console’s added horsepower, while those on PS4 don’t have to feel left out.

Also available to PS Plus subscribers as of Tuesday, April 5 is Slay the Spire. Slay the Spire is a roguelike deck-building game that earned mostly positive reviews at the time of its original release in 2019. While Hood: Outlaws & Legends may be the more high profile game when it comes to the free PS Plus games for April 2022, Slay the Spire is the one with the highest review scores, so fans should definitely make it a point to claim it while it’s free.

And finally, the third game that’s available to PS Plus subscribers in April 2022 is SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom — Rehydrated for PS4. SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom — Rehydrated is a remake of the 2003 game SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom that incorporates a multiplayer mode and other new content for fans to check out.

PS Plus subscribers can simply claim the games for their library without actually downloading them to their consoles, but the good news is that none of the games have particularly large file sizes. The free PS Plus games for April 2022 file sizes are all fairly reasonable, with none of them taking up an egregious amount of space.

April 2022 will mark one of the last times that PS Plus subscribers will have a traditional month of new free games. In June, Sony is looking to completely revamp PS Plus by introducing new pricing tiers that will shake up the free games players get every month. For now, PS Plus subscribers can claim their monthly free games and wait to learn what May 2022 will have in store.

The PS Plus Free Games for April 2022 Are in a Sticky Situation

The PS Plus free games for April 2022 have not had the warmest reception, and it’s potentially the start of a new concerning trend for the service.

PS Plus subscribers have access to three new games this month, namely Hood: Outlaws and Legends, Slay the Spire, and SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. On their own, these games certainly have their fans, but they aren’t landing too well collectively among PS Plus users for a variety of reasons. Slay the Spire is perhaps the best out of the bunch, but many will still turn away from it for its card-based nature.

Overall, it seems PS Plus subscribers are not happy with this month’s selection, and 2022 itself has been an odd year for the service so far. January and March’s games were warmly welcomed, but February and April’s have been criticized pretty heavily. No one can really guess what the games will be month after month, but perhaps more so than in February, the PS Plus free games of April 2022 seem to be caught in a sticky situation. If they are indicative of the general quality of the service going down, then the reason may be somewhat clear. But what is unclear is how this will influence future games on the service, too.

PS Plus’ Focus Might Shift Away From Free Games

All of this is speculative, but the reason these games may be on the lackluster end could be the upcoming changes to the service. Sony recently announced that it was creating new tiers for the PS Plus subscription, with the final tier granting fans access to a library of 700+ games across the PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 platforms, and these changes will be live relatively soon: June 2022. This is incredibly awesome for fans who have been wanting to play these older titles, but it could come at a cost beyond the subscription price.

If Sony is more concerned with the library of free games and the higher tiers of the service, then it is possible that the basic PS Plus tier suffers. PS Plus free games for April 2022 could be an outline, then, of what fans could expect every month. It does seem beneficial that this library is mostly games from older platforms, but there are going to be major titles like Returnal and Spider-Man: Miles Morales available at higher tiers as well. With that in mind, it’s possible that the quality of the basic PS Plus games goes down to offset the new tiers. Doing so would encourage consumers, after all, to pick up the higher tier, instead of just having the basic one.

PS Plus Monthly Free Games vs. A Big Library

This isn’t without precedent either. Looking at the service’s main competition, the monthly free Games with Gold haven’t been “well-received” for quite some time. There are a ton of variables here, but Xbox Game Pass’ huge library has made many forget all about Games with Gold. Game Pass quickly defined the late Xbox One-era and the early Xbox Series X-era, while the selection of Games with Gold offered every month has suffered.

The basic tier of PS Plus could fall to the wayside just like Games with Gold has. From a business perspective, it makes more sense to push PS Plus Premium subscriptions over the basic tier as it equates to more profit. There are plenty of differences between PS Plus Premium and Game Pass, but at the surface level, it’s a big library of games vs. a monthly offering of just a few. The Xbox ecosystem has proven how popular and successful the game library can be over the monthly selection, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the same thing happened on PlayStation consoles.

Again, there are a ton of variables. This makes it hard to say if these additional tiers will have a negative impact on the monthly PS Plus free games or not. If based on the PS Plus free games for April 2022 (heading into PS Plus Premium’s June 2022 launch), then any concern is understandable. Now, there could be other factors that have impacted the quality of these games, something fans are unaware of. Or, April could be a taste of what Sony pushing PS Plus Premium over the bottom tier is like. Once these tiers become official, that’s when any shifts in the quality of the monthly offerings would be most noticeable and, at that point, most likely to be related.

PS Plus subscribers typically get a handful of free games every month.

Information about the April selection of free games for subscribers of PlayStation Plus on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles leaked to the network.

According to the leak, the following projects are waiting for users of the service next month :

Hood: Outlaws & Lewgends (PS4, PS5)
SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom — Rehydrated (PS4)

The list was traditionally published by the user of the French discount aggregator Dealabs under the nickname billbil-kun , who previously declassified PlayStation Plus games for March, February, January, December, November, October and September, so the information is likely to be confirmed .

The unfortunate news is that PS Plus subscribers with Russian accounts will most likely not be able to download these free games as operations in our Sony Digital Store segment are currently blocked . However, there is always hope for changes at the last moment.

The list of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers for April 2022 was officially revealed by Sony Interactive Entertainment tonight, and it is fully consistent with the early leak from insider billbil-kun from the French website Dealabs .

Next month, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users will be able to get three games with a subscription :
