First look at the device with a modified cooling system — yet without a detailed study.

Digital Foundry editor Richard Ledbetter got a new revision of the PlayStation 5 with model number CFI-1100 and shared a few conclusions regarding the device after a short test. The expert also commented on the video of blogger Austin Evans, who had previously disassembled the console and found out that the radiator in the console had become smaller and lighter by 277 grams. nine0003

  • Ledbetter hasn’t disassembled the device yet and only tested it by running the Control game for a few hours.
  • With ray tracing enabled and 30 fps locked, PS5 power consumption is about 170 watts. When visiting a resource-demanding location that experts often use to test performance, the console consumes 200 watts. In photo mode, where the frame rate is not limited, power consumption increases even more, peaking at 214 watts. nine0013
  • Energy consumption figures on the new revision model are almost the same as the original PS5. According to the expert, it follows from this that the cooling system works properly with the same power consumption.

Whether the console got hot or not is yet to be verified. However, logic dictates that if the new cooling system weren’t up to the task, the cooler’s speed and rotational power would increase to get rid of the accumulated heat. This doesn’t seem to happen, and after a few hours of testing, the power consumption remained unchanged. nine0003

Richard Ledbetter, editor of Digital Foundry

  • In his video, blogger Austin Evans recorded that the temperature from the console outlets increased by 3-5 degrees, but the noise was reduced compared to the original model. Noise reduction contradicts the temperature increase claim, Ledbetter said. In addition, one cannot answer the question of the efficiency of the cooling system only by measuring the temperature from the exhaust ports, the specialist emphasized. nine0013
  • The expert noted that the noise level could be affected by the new cooler with longer blades, which is probably better at removing hot air or just quieter than the previous model. He also has a theory that a smaller heatsink made from materials with lower thermal conductivity has been redesigned in such a way that it has become more efficient. However, according to Ledbetter, this version is the least plausible.
  • The main question for Sony is what exactly justifies such a significant reduction in the mass and materials of the radiator, provided that neither the energy consumption nor the cooling efficiency has changed, the specialist believes. nine0013

If the PS5 can work just fine with a cheaper, smaller heatsink, why not ship one from the start? We can’t say for sure, but in terms of production, the individual components are built in parallel with each other, not one after the other.

No one needs another «red ring of death» like on the Xbox 360 or «yellow fire of death» like on the PS3, so it makes sense to play it safe and think over the design «with a margin» from the very beginning. nine0003

Perhaps, thanks to experience gained and telemetry from millions of units, Sony has gained enough confidence that it is possible to reduce the heat sink and reduce the cost of the console assembly.

Richard Ledbetter, editor of Digital Foundry

  • Ledbetter believes that even if the new revision of the PS5 gets hotter, this will not affect performance. Nevertheless, it will be possible to find out after full-fledged testing, which Digital Foundry intends to conduct in the near future. nine0013
  • In general, the expert believes that the release of the new PS5 revision is aimed at reducing the cost of manufacturing the device before the holiday season.

The new revision of the PS5 has been significantly redesigned and the console consumes less power

Kerde Severin, Unsplash

As we recently learned, Sony released new revisions of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) game console with the code designation CFI-1200, at the end of August the models appeared in Australia . The accompanying documentation for the new consoles indicated that the weight of the models again decreased by 200 … 300 grams. A similar situation was observed when Sony released a revision of the CFI-1100 with an optimized cooling system, what has changed in the new consoles. YouTuber Austin Evans received the new PS5 revision and compared it to the other two, it looks like Sony has made significant changes to the PCB design and cooling system. nine0003

Compared to the previous revision, power consumption has decreased by about 28…30 W: under equal conditions, the CFI-1100 draws 229 W from the socket, and the CFI-1200 draws about 200 W. It is not known what this is connected with, there have been rumors on the network for a long time about transferring the console chip to TSMC’s new 6nm process technology, it should be backward compatible with the 7nm process technology that was originally used in production, but this rumor has not yet been confirmed.

The heating of the consoles was studied using an infrared camera, the temperature at the hottest point is 52. 5°C, the same for the basic version, the highest temperature of the elements in the cooling system of revision CFI-1100 is 63°C. The temperature of the elements does not allow us to judge the temperature of the components, a more detailed analysis is needed here, especially since the disassembly of the consoles showed a significantly changed design. nine0003

Radiators have been reduced, reinforcing plates too, and in some places they are completely absent, CMOS is now located under the radiator, which is inconvenient. Source: Austin Evans, YouTube

As for the «insides» of the new revision, here the changes are already visible from the moment the side decorative panels were removed:

  • Additional ventilation cutouts appeared in the side of the case (under the decorative panel)
  • A metal plate (backplate) is integrated into the SSD slot, additional insulation has appeared, probably for better shielding
  • The design of the centrifugal fan has changed, perhaps this is one of several revisions of
  • Redesign of PCB, cooling system and backplates
  1. PCB shortened
  2. Radiators reduced again
  3. You can see changes in the design of the heat sink and heat pipe for cooling the batteries on the reverse side of the board, changes in the backplate at the places where memory chips are installed
  4. Some reinforcing plates in the design of the cooling system have become smaller or disappeared altogether, but additional stiffening ribs have appeared in the plastic case
  • Disadvantage: CMOS battery is now located under the radiator of the cooling system, which will require a complete disassembly of the structure to replace it
