Ps4 top games: 25 Best PS4 Games to Play Right Now

10 Best 2 Player & Co-op PS4 Games 2022

Do you want to dip into the very best 2 player PS4 games that the platform has to offer? That’s what I hope to help with in this article. The PlayStation 4 did, after all, quickly become the go-to gaming platform of choice for many people; myself included during the last generation, meaning there’s plenty of choice when it comes to games that you can play side-by-side with a buddy. Though you only get one PS4 controller, (also known as the DualShock 4) with each console, the following 2 player PS4 games (that also play great on PS5) should give you some great reasons to grab another.

Whether you’re in the mood for rolling the dice on your own fantasy adventure, or want to shoot and loot together across a cell-shaded FPS universe, the PlayStation 4 has plenty of co-op and multiplayer games perfectly primed for pairs to play.

Here are my 10 best 2 player PS4 games both online and local that should whet every duo’s appetite.

Skateboarding fans on PS4 were treated to quite the throwback in June of 2020, as Activision and Vicarious Visions excellently remastered the first two Tony Hawk games and launched them as one standalone package. It’s the same addictive formula of pulling off cool tricks, discovering secrets, and completing challenges as veteran players will remember, only now you do so in a ground-up remake that fully updates the visuals of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 to make it look like an entirely new game. It’s one of the best 2 player PS4 games out there because you can skate and shred alongside a buddy in glorious split-screen co-op – it literally doesn’t get more old school.

Whether you’re grinding on rails, trying to pull off the perfect 180, or attempting to keep you multiplayer going as long as possible through the perfect combination of tricks, jumping into some split-screen skating with a friend only enhances the competition and rivalry. What’s more, any progress you make while playing in 2 player mode filly transfers to the single-player side of things, letting you unlock new skaters, decks, and more until you find your groove. There’s two games worth of levels to master in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 in total, guaranteeing you and a friend near endless hours of skateboarding fun.

While we could have easily inundated this list of the very best 2 player PS4 games with nothing but LEGO games, the cream of the crop by far is LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Why? Well, not only is it the latest entry in TT Games’ family friendly series of block-based action platformers… The Skywalker Saga is easily also the most ambitious. Letting you and another player blast and bash your way through all nine Star Wars movies at your own pace, it’s the perfect excuse to lovingly re-experience such moments as Anakin turning to the dark side, the snowy battle at Hoth, and Rey wrestling with her family’s ancestry in Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is the only game to let you play through all the movies from start to finish. But in addition to this jamboree of force-fuelled content, this is the game that substantially revitalised the LEGO formula for the new era. No longer are you tied to fixed camera angles, instead being able to experience these iconic moments and events from a ground level via third-person view. Firing a blaster as Han Solo means taking cover, while lightsaber fights are now much more intense thanks to the new perspective. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is easily the best 2 player PS4 game ideal for LEGO fans who want to enjoy co-op, letting you hop from planet to planet while celebrating one of cinema’s most ambitious and beloved Sci-Fi franchises. The force is well and truly with this game.

It’s rare when a new beat-em-up game releases to so much fanfare, but that’s what’s happened with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. Allowing a staggering 6-player co-op, this is a game full of chaotic fun. Returning to the Turtle’s history of beautiful old-school fighters, each level in Shredder’s Revenge pits you and your team against buildings full of ninjas and other walking punching bags. With their own fighting style and moveset, each Turtle is easy to pick up but a challenge to master. If you want to truly experience the game, you’ll want to go through the levels again and again with each of the 7 playable characters.

That’s right, not only do you get to play as the heroes in a halfshell themselves, but you can also choose to play Splinter, April and Casey Jones as you fight back the Foot Clan and stop Shredder in his tracks. The easy to pick up gameplay coupled with its variety of fun levels is what makes Shredder’s Revenge stand above the crowd. But, even though the replay factor is there as you try out each character on each level, there aren’t too many levels to actually play. If you and your friend take on the game at an average pace and have no interest in replaying, your adventure will clock in to only a couple hours once you’re done. Though Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is an excellent game, it is far too short. For that reason it places no higher than 7 on my list of best 2 player PS4 games.

Though it came out two years prior, I believe that Streets of Rage 4 is superior to the aforementioned Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge in almost every single way (except the music). Letting co-op preferring players smash and bash their way through legions of bad guys in stylistic fashion, Streets of Rage 4 is a return to form and reignited the beat-em-up genre. This classic stalwart from the 90s sees the return of familiar characters like Axel Stone and Adam Hunter, who are joined with several newcomers all equipped with unique combos and blitz moves.

Ranking Streets of Rage 4 over Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a difficult task. Outside of theme, both games are very similar. They carry the same strengths (easy pick-up, bombastic gameplay), but also its weaknesses too (short length, limited replayability).
The biggest reason I find Streets of Rage 4 to be slightly better than its ninja-filled counterpart is because of the variety of characters you can play as. Each one has their own interesting design and varied moveset. From franchise frontman Axel punching and kicking to fresh-faced Cherry who uses her guitar to bring justice to the dirtied streets. Also, Streets of Rage 4 has a DLC expansion which adds more levels and fighters to the already impressive roster.
Streets of Rage 4 supports up to four players locally while still letting two duke it out together online. Dripping in a gorgeous new comic book aesthetic that strongly suits the environments it sets you in, this stunning PS4 sequel is fun to play alone but is even better with another street fighting buddy by your side. Though it is short, if you are a fan of this genre, it’s definitely a must-play during your next 2 player PS4 session.

The Overcooked games are fantastic co-op experiences that can really test the boundaries of any friendship. Overcooked! 2 was released on PS4 back in 2018 placing you in an adventure of pure chaotic culinary action. You alongside your team of chefs must work together in order to stave off the threat of «The Unbread». Yes, that is exactly what it sounds like, zombie bread!

In Overcooked! 2 you can play online or local couch-co-op as a team and in competitive multiplayer with up to 4 players. The absolute frantic gameplay and highs of excellent teamwork make this one of my favourite multiplayer PS4 games ever. If you can get four friends who work well together (or laugh when things go completely wrong) it is some of the best fun you can have with a game. However, if you’re playing with people who are easily stressed, or aren’t too familiar with video games, the fun can completely drop off. It’s also a game that requires focus and some skill, which isn’t always what you’re looking for in a cooperative game. For those reasons, Overcooked! 2 takes a middling position in this list. It’s great fun, but we recommend whoever you take with you on this catering journey is someone you don’t easily fall out with as this game will have you screaming and shouting like no other. On the plus side, it’s an easy way to find out who the Gordan Ramsey in your friendship group is!

Fantasy RPGs changed forever when Larian Studios released its highly anticipated sequel to Divinity Original Sin. A sprawling adventure set in the world of Rivellon, Divinity Original Sin 2 takes place centuries after the original game and throws you and a party of three others on a quest to become the region’s saviour. What I love about Divinity Original Sin 2 is how much freedom each player has. You and your friends are able to roleplay as your preferred fantasy character. Elves, Dwarves, lizards and even the undead are viable choices, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Divinity Original Sin 2 sees the story build itself around your personal decisions. Go anywhere, talk to anyone and interact with anything to form your own rewards and consequences. In terms of the multiplayer aspect, drop in/drop out co-op easily makes this one of the best 2 player PS4 games around. Even though Divinity Original Sin 2 is a masterpiece of a game, it’s not at the top of the list due to it being a slow and intricate adventure, which may put off a lot of players who want a quick fun time. But outside of the necessary complexity, if you’re looking for the ultimate co-operative game to get lost in on PS4, you can’t do much better than Divinity Original Sin 2.

Darksiders Genesis excelled at taking an existing series and reformatting it to work for the co-operative format. Darksiders Genesis lets PS4 players fight across the realms of the underworld as a pair, with one playing as War and wrecking shop with his mighty chaos eater sword, while the other plays the long game as new horseman Strife who dual-wields two powerful pistols. In many ways, Darksiders Genesis is a perfect co-op game. It’s easy to pick up and master, both characters feel unique and important, and it keeps players coming back to progress the story and fight the next boss. It’s not mechanically complex, it’s not mentally taxing, Darksiders Genesis knows what it is, and does what it does extremely well.

>Unlike the other Darksiders games, Genesis plays out from a top-down perspective, making it easy for you and a friend to keep an eye on what’s going on. Throughout the course of the game you’ll take down legions of angels and demons, solve all manner of environmental puzzles and fight against screen-sized bosses, upgrading War and Strife until they are almost unbeatable. Though it holds a strong position in this list, the theme of Darksiders Genesis may put some players off. A lot of co-op gamers are looking for a lighthearted romp, and cleaving your way through hellscapes might be a little on the dark side for some.
However, if you’re feeling metal, as far as 2 player PS4 games go, Darksiders Genesis is a head-banging adventure that you shouldn’t pass up.

Josef Fares is a developer that truly values the high-quality 2 player PS4 experience. Having already done so in both 2013’s Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and 2018’s A Way Out (see honourable mentions), he returned with a new co-operative platformer called It Takes Two. In it, you and a friend take on the roles of Cody and May, a married couple whose relationship is on the brink. That is until they are shrunken down by the tears of their daughter and forced to work together in their new small-scale universe. This is a co-op game that wants to make players learn things not just about the characters, but about themselves as well. Both players have to work together to solve puzzles and bond. The co-op element is so vital in It Takes Two, that it’s impossible to play alone. It’s rare to find a game with a focus on co-operative storytelling, but it’s even rarer to find one that requires it. As you play, you’ll feel a connection with your character as the gameplay entwines with the story and their emotions. It’s a light-hearted adventure with a good amount of content, yet underneath it all is a heartwarming tale that will stay with you long after the game has finished.

During each chapter of the story, both characters acquire new abilities and powers that compliment each other. You cannot progress without working with your partner. To emphasise this, the action only ever takes place in split-screen and this dedication alone is enough to make It Takes Two a top pick on my list of the best 2 player PS4 games. In addition to this, only one copy of the game is needed to play with a friend online, which is incredible in this day and age. It Takes Two is a landmark cooperative game, but because it relies so heavily on its story, there’s unfortunately very little replay value. There are mini-games scattered throughout the world that are fun to find and play, but they’re unfortunately not worth going back to once the tale is told. Regardless, It Takes Two is without a doubt a co-operative duo’s delight. Constantly surprising and ever joyful, It Takes Two is one of the best co-op games on PS4 games out there.

3D platformers are a dime a dozen these days, but that didn’t stop developer Sumo Digital from trying to recapture some of this old-school spirit in Sackboy: A Big Adventure. This co-operative LittleBigPlanet spin-off is a delight to play through alone, but is even better when joined by a friend. Both of you must work your way through a series of creative platforming stages, using gadgets and gizmos as a pair in order to stop the evil Vex from taking over Craftworld.

While Sackboy: A Big Adventure doesn’t emphasise the creation aspect found in the main LittleBigPlanet series, it instead has more bespoke and exciting levels. With simple controls, an easy to understand goal and some of the best platforming stages on the console, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is an easy contender on my list. With countless collectables, some memorable levels and the chaos that comes with introducing a second player to the world, it’s a blast to come back to again and again. Naturally the story is nothing to write home about, but it’s merely icing on a delicious and enjoyable cake. The true core of the game is the gameplay. No matter the age or skill level of your gaming partner, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is accessible and fun for everyone. Collect bubbles, unlock stickers and purchase a wide range of costumes for both Sackboy and his companions. Thanks to the advertising, many think that Sackboy: A Big Adventure is only available on the PS5, but it is also playable on the PS4, and if you’re looking for the best 2 player PS4 game, this is sure to bring a smile on your face.

What if Borderlands was merged with a Lord of the Rings style fantasy universe? Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is very much the answer. Highly inspired by Borderlands 2’s Assault on Dragon’s Keep DLC, this is a full-fledged spin off from the main cell-shaded looter-shooter series, where psychos and skrags are swapped out for skeletons and sorcerers. An entire world of wizards and wonder is yours for the taking, with the entire campaign playable in split-screen local co-op, making it one of the finest 2 player PS4 games around. There are six different character classes – each with different skills and abilities – to play as, ensuring that every campaign in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands plays differently each time.

Despite playing extremely similarly to a traditional Borderlands game, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands offers some unique spins to the format. Grenades, for instance, are completely done away with in favour of spells, which enable you to perform such feats as freezing foes or launching a giant flaming sky bird. Then there are ring and amulet slots now available within each character’s skill tree, letting you boost the power of your magical character further. The new fantasy theme is just the reinvention this chaotically fun co-op shooting series needed, setting you and friends off on a fun D&D story that never need end thanks to a new infinite endgame mode called Chaos Chamber. If you want to fire creative weaponry and have fun with an FPS in local co-op, this is one of the finest 2 player PS4 games around.

Honourable mentions

Still craving some excellent co-operative action? If you’re someone who’s already played all the games I’ve just written about and are hungry for more 2 player PS4 games, you’ll find even more recommendations in my dedicated honourable mentions section below. They may not quite represent the best 2 player PS4 games that the platform has to offer, but they will still guarantee you and a friend a fun time.

Cuphead

Perhaps best described as a 1930s cartoon serial that’s playable in motion, Cuphead has built up a reputation for being extremely difficult – even for co-op players sharing shooting duties as Cuphead and Mugman. However, what Cuphead has in challenge it easily matches in charm, as you and a friend are invited to blast and dodge your way through three boss-laden islands. Defeating each boss requires a balance of timing, skill, and patience, but taking them on as a pair should take the edge off.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III

Split-screen first-person shooters are a rarity in 2022. And while the campaign in 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III leaves a lot to be desired, it gets an honourable mention due to it being one of the few series entries playable in local co-op. Luckily, the slick gunplay is here in full force, along with blockbuster set pieces, thrilling action and visuals which still hold up on PS4 all these years later. If you’re looking for a fast shooter to experience with a friend, definitely consider giving Call of Duty: Black Ops III a shot.

Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 exploded onto the scene in 2019, bringing with it more guns, four new vault hunter classes and several cool ways for players to make this FPS adventure their own. What’s more, it retains split-screen co-op play as well as the ability to do so online, which as we established already on this list is a much-needed rarity. Especially in shooters. With all the strengths of a deeply complex RPG without the slow and methodical gameplay, Borderlands 3 allows you and your friends to explode through a story in what is often considered an incredibly fun 2 player PS4 shooter game.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled

Nintendo Switch fans might have Mario to rely on for their kart racing fix, but back in 2019, PS4 players were treated to some similarly anarchic high-speed antics thanks to the return of Crash Team Racing. Nitro-Fueled is a complete ground-up remake of one of my favourite PlayStation One games. It’s ideal for letting 2 player duos race against one another as a whole host of zany and creative characters. Each character’s karts handle wildly differently, tasking you to boost, bash and speed past your enemies while trying to dodge incoming attacks.

Far Cry 4

Far Cry 4 is an honourable mention because while the co-op isn’t the focus, hunting exotic beasts and taking down outposts online with a friend is a great time. This multiplayer mode is called Guns for Hire and sees you and a friend freely explore the luscious island of Kyrat, defeating enemies and infiltrating camps. Weapon variety is also top-notch, from assault rifles that deal excessive damage to grenade launchers and flamethrowers that further enable you and a partner to cause that trademark Far Cry chaos.

Diablo III

Just marginally missing out on a top 10 spot, few co-operative hack-and-slashers are better than Diablo III. This is especially the case since the PS4 version also comes with the Reaper of Souls DLC, giving you and up to three friends even more of a reason to pick a class, gain skills and gradually fight your way through hell. Procedural level layouts always ensure no single Diablo III playthrough is the same, too, making this a 2 player PS4 game you can play over and over again.

Knack 2

The original Knack was an early PS4 exclusive that took advantage of the hardware’s impressive particle tech. Having a protagonist that could use the environment to either grow large or shrink very small was an entertaining idea, and this was greatly expanded upon in the 2017 sequel. Knack 2 is a pretty forgettable game, but if you’re playing with a younger player, it’s still fun to run through this Pixar-like adventure together.

A Way Out

A Way Out is the ultimate co-op experience for those wondering what it would be like to conduct a prison break. Centring on two cellmates, Leo and Vincent who are both attempting to put the past behind them, you and a friend must play through this adventure entirely in split screen, solving puzzles and completing platform challenges in a cinematic 2 player PS4 adventure. It all kicks off in a prison, sure, until eventually the two are swept up into their own crime thriller. If you liked It Takes Two, definitely give A Way Out a shot as well.

Rayman Legends

Often hailed as one of the best side-scrolling 2D platformers ever made, Rayman Legends touts a wholly colourful art style that makes it a fun adventure for all family members. You’ll be hopping, jumping and skidding your way through many colourful stages, attempting to work together while trying to find various collectibles. It works well in 2 player co-op on PS4 but actually supports up to 4 players, letting you extend the fun in one of the tightest-feeling platformers of modern years.

The Division 2

Shared-world shooters are a great way to stay in touch with friends. And there’s something enthralling about the world of Ubisoft’s The Division. This sequel sets you and a squad of others within a post-apocalyptic Washington DC, fending off other groups for vital supplies and ammunition. It’s playable solo but best experienced with another friend by your side.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

The second entry in the third-person take of Plants vs. Zombies allows you to team up with friends to fight as or against the zombie horde. A colourful and unique game, it’s fun for the whole family with some in-depth mechanics and skill-based gameplay to boot. You’ll need more than a few braaiinns if you want to demolish the other team and claim victory.

LittleBigPlanet 3

Side-scrolling puzzle-platformers simply don’t get more charming than LittleBigPlanet 3. It expanded on the previous two games by adding in another three cute characters to the mix, each of which combine with the abilities of Sackboy to make sitting on the sofa and playing this with friends even more fun. OddSock, Swoop and Toggle all play differently, jumping, swimming, swinging, grabbing across an endless collection of player-created levels. All previous user-generated stages from LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2 carry over into this one, meaning you’ll never be at a loss for things to do.

Minecraft

Minecraft as a series has seen various spin-offs by this point, but not one of them has managed to usurp the original game. That’s because 2 player PS4 games don’t get better than those that riff on your own imagination. You don’t even have to be a builder per se, but rather an explorer eager to set foot on other players’ servers to see what they have come up with. Whether you’re a PS4 player that wants to build, create or just plain witness, if you haven’t yet played Minecraft with a friend you’re definitely missing out.

LEGO Marvel Superheroes

The LEGO games are great for co-op because they appeal to players both young and old. And better yet, TT Games has been hard at work creating titles around some of pop culture’s most recognisable media for almost 15 years now. There’s sure to be one based on a licence perfectly suited to your tastes. For an honourable mention, we’ve gone for the first LEGO Marvel Superheroes, not least because it features over 100 characters from the comic book world and lets you roam a fully LEGO-fied version of New York City. Complete a wacky original story with your favourite heroes like Spider-Man, Wolverine, Daredevil and more.

Gran Turismo 7

If you’re a car lover who fancies some high-stakes competitive racing, Gran Turismo 7 is a great option for a 2 player PS4 game. The latest in Sony’s premier driving experience has both local split-screen and online multiplayer for you to go head to head to find out who is truly the best behind the wheel. With over 420 cars to choose from and 34 tracks to master, there are plenty of good times to be had here with your friends on PS4, and also PS5 thanks to the game’s cross-play.

Guacamelee! 2

The first Guacamelee was a side-scrolling fiesta treat, arriving at a time when metroidvanias weren’t anywhere near as common. You’re cast as a superhero luchador in search of his lost love. This fun concept was revived once again a few years later and brought to PS4, when Guacamelee! 2 introduced 4-player co-operative play to let you and friends bash, crash and suplex your way through a Mexico-inspired world where wrestling and the supernatural collide.

Top 50 Best PS4 Games of All Time

The PS4 is the hottest selling console of this past generation. Thus, it’s not surprising that it has arguably the best combination of exclusive and third-party games over the last half decade or so. These are the best PS4 games of all time that you cannot go wrong with if you’re looking for something new to play.

1. Devil May Cry 5

Devil May Cry 5 is a grand return to form for the action franchise, letting you play as three wildly different characters that each have their own combat style and combos. Stylish is the best word to describe DMC 5, but even that doesn’t do justice to how absurdly flashy the game can be at times. Combat feels super smooth, the story is campy fun, and graphically the game looks incredible. This is the DMC game fans have always wanted.

2. Kingdom Hearts 3

It was a long wait for Kingdom Hearts 3, but those years of waiting finally paid off with one of the best PS4 JRPGs out there. Kingdom Hearts 3 manages to capture Disney magic like few games do, with Disney worlds that stick to their series incredibly well while still managing to do new things. Combat is super fast and gives you a ton of different options, from Keyblade Transformations to Attraction Flow. Of course, the main draw here is the finale to a story ten years in the making, and while Kingdom Hearts 3 certainly sets things up for what’s next, there’s plenty of emotional payoff.

3. God of War (2018)

Who knew completely reworking what God of War is would have such an incredible effect, but it resulted in what might be the very best PS4 game to date. God of War gives us an older, wider Kratos, along with his young son, Atreus. It’s a much more personal story than that of past games, with Kratos and Atreus journeying to the top of a mountain to scatter his wife’s ashes. Combat has also been completely overhauled, however, zooming the camera in close and going for a third-person action feel. God of War wildly succeeds at everything it does, and it’s a must-play if you own a PS4.

4. Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter World finally put the franchise on the mainstream map, and quickly became Capcom’s best-selling game of all time. It’s for good reason, though, as the game presents a gorgeous world to explore packed with wondrous and vicious monsters. The beauty of Monster Hunter World is how these monsters interact with the ecosystem and each other, not just the player. Of course, there’s tons of customization for armor, weapons, classes, and more, making Monster Hunter World a game you can easily play for hundreds of hours, by yourself or with friends.

5. Marvel’s Spider-Man

Superhero games have a checkered history, but Marvel’s Spider-Man easily joins the ranks of the very best. The game presents a brand new Spider-Man universe, with a Peter Parker who’s been doing the hero job for years now. Insomniac absolutely nailed the swinging and combat gameplay, really making you feel like Spider the entire time. The big surprise, however, is how engrossing and emotional the story manages to be the entire time. Spider-Man does nearly everything right, and it’s one of the best superhero games ever made.

6. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 really needs no introduction, as the sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time. Easily one of the most ambitious games ever made, Red Dead Redemption 2 tells the harrowing story of the Dutch Van Der Linde Gang, and one member named Arthur Morgan. While the game’s story is fantastic there’s so much more, from the phenomenal Stranger sidequests, to all of the hunting options and collectibles. Red Dead Redemption 2 sets a new standard in quality for open world games.

7. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Assassin’s Creed Origins gave the series a new lease on life, and Odyssey carries over all of the gameplay ideas and systems introduced in the previous games, while introducing new ones. The big talking point here is player choice, and while it’s not as smartly done as in The Witcher 3, Odyssey does a great job at letting you build your own story and character. Combat also feels better than ever, with a big emphasis on speed and parrying, while giving you a ton of different abilities to play around with. While Origins was great, Odyssey is the best Assassin’s Cree has been in years.

8. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Dragon Quest XI is a game that pays homage to everything that made JRPGs what they are, traditional to a fault, but still modern enough to bring in newcomers. The game tells the time-old tale of light vs darkness, but where Dragon Quest XI’s story really shines is in its complex party members, who each get their own dedicated story arc. Gameplay-wise, Dragon Quest XI presents a gorgeous, massive world to explore, filled with interesting and comedic characters. Combat is the tried-and-true turn-based formula, but it’s still engaging with how many options it gives you.

9. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

The first Ni No Kuni was a brilliant idea that lacked a bit in the execution, but Ni No Kuni II fixes everything that it’s predecessor did wrong, making for a phenomenal JRPG experience. With a story that deals with a usurped king, the game puts a huge emphasis on building your own kingdom, even letting you select buildings to place and what research to undertake. The kingdom building isn’t hugely complex, but it brilliantly ties into every other aspect of the game. Combat is also a huge improvement by being action-focused, playing very similarly to something like the Tales series.

10. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life

Yakuza has been a staple PlayStation franchise for years, and the PS4 has seen some of the very best entries yet. Yakuza 6 brings an end to the long story of Kazuma Kiryu, telling a much more personal story than past games that revolves around Kiryu and his relationship with Haruka. The new Dragon Engine makes Yakuza 6’s world look stunning, and combat feels even more visceral than before. Of course, there’s plenty of crazy side content to keep you busy, from a substory that deals with Kiryu being a voice actor, to the complex Clan Creator minigame.

11. Resident Evil 2 Remake

Resident Evil 2 Remake is easily one of the best remasters of this generation. It perfectly recreated the classic horror game from the PS1 era, and recreating it in glorious HD without messing with the gameplay at all or removing an iota of the horror.

12. Rocket League

Originally released as a console exclusive for the PS4 back in 2015, Rocket League has since taken the world by storm through its unique soccer battle-car gameplay. Perhaps its best accomplishment is the accessibility it affords for players coming from all walks of life, and it’s thanks to that it makes our list of the best PS4 games.

13: Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 is nothing short of immersive. Sticking you right amidst the chaos of the first World War, every aspect of the Great War is meticulously recreated from the weapon design, to the sound effects, to the emotional ties you’ll make with your fellow soldiers.

14: Watch Dogs 2

If you thought the original Watch Dogs didn’t quite live up to its potential, Watch Dogs 2 is deserving of your attention. The sequel is a manifestation of all the innovation everyone expected from the original, complete with a fun and interesting San Francisco to explore and exciting multiplayer functionality to fool around with.

15: Far Cry 4

Far Cry 4 turns the explosive goodness that made Far Cry 3 so great up another level. With plenty of side missions to complete and countless collectibles to track down and mark off your list, you’ll be stuck in the beautiful albeit dangerous region of Kyrat for quite some time.

16: Inside

Keeping in line with precedent that Limbo set before it, developer Playdead’s Inside sets a gorgeous mood sodden with the melancholy of dystopia. A disturbing mystery unfolds as you solve each puzzle, leaving you as the player frightened, afraid, and perplexed by the time the credits begin to roll.

17: Until Dawn

Until Dawn offers a break from the norm that fans of the horror genre have come to expect. Filled with memorable twists and turns and a fantastic cast of personable characters, the game comes alive in more ways than just one. To say more would spoil all the fun. But rest assured, it’s one of the best PS4 games.

18: What Remains of Edith Finch

If you’re a fan of expertly-crafted narrative-driven experiences, What Remains of Edith Finch is made for you. Featuring impeccable writing and an engaging anthology of ghost tales, each story will resonate with you in profound ways.

19. Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV is the epic fantasy bro-trip you never knew you needed. The game’s world is expansive and offers a deep layer of strategy underneath all the glitz and glam. Combat and gameplay are also strong components, ushering in a return to form that the series had been sorely missing as of late.

20. The Witness

The Witness may very well be regarded as the pinnacle game of the puzzle genre – at least as far as the PS4’s library is concerned. Simple mechanics eventually evolve into challenges that you weren’t expecting at all, each fueled by the desire to learn more about the world you inhabit and the mystery unfolding around you.

21. Nioh

If you’re really missing Dark Souls and want a game that you can lose yourself in for hours on end, NioH is right up your alley. Combat is smooth and varied enough to constantly keep you on your toes and loot and gear crafting systems are wonderfully complex.

22. Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil 7’s first-person perspective works wonders for the game, helping it return to the terrifying tension and claustrophobia that fans of the series have come to know and love. The Baker house is a blast to play in too, though it is a bit unfortunate that everyone who already lives there wants to kill you.

23. Rise of the Tomb Raider

One of Rise of the Tomb Raider’s biggest strengths lies in the flexibility it allows players to take down enemies Lara encounters throughout her stay in the wilderness. You can hide and wait or dive straight into battle without a moment’s remorse. The choice is always ultimately in your hands.

24. Assassin’s Creed Origins

There’s a lot more to do in Assassin’s Creed Origins than just follow the main objective. Egypt is a massive sprawling world deeply rooted in fantastic RPG mechanics that allow the user to play like the assassin they always wanted to be.

25. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus addresses the problems people had with the original game and delivers on a hilarious and memorable cast of characters, each adding a bit of heart into a story otherwise covered in pools of Nazi blood.

26. Life Is Strange

Life Is Strange proves that the narrative-driven gameplay is indeed alive and well. Introducing a gripping story from beginning to end, it tackles some profoundly mature themes like depression, suicide, and murder.

27. DOOM

DOOM brings back memories of a simpler era for the first-person shooter genre, supplying some of the best action gameplay this generation of consoles has seen so far. DOOM maintains the bloody, hectic, and fun mayhem that the series prides itself on.

28. Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2’s campaign does an excellent job of making the traditional FPS story mode feel fresh through a mix of platforming and gunplay elements with a great narrative to boot. The multiplayer possess a rich array of customization options, modes, and Titans to play as, and is among the best of this generation, and among the best PS4 games.

29. Undertale

Undertale is an exploration of human nature that offers an introspective look into what makes us think and feel as unique living things. Filled with humorous dialogue and plenty of charm, this port will undoubtedly leave you with a strong sense of determination.

30. Overwatch

Overwatch is a chaotic, fast-paced team brawler that offers a great deal of fun through it’s impressive array of characters, each with his or her own unique gameplay attributes. Taking into account all the post-launch this game has been getting since its debut two years ago, it seems like the hype won’t be dying down anytime soon.

31: Fallout 4

Fallout 4 takes the precedent marked by Fallout 3 and improves upon it in almost every way, providing deeper, more challenging gameplay elements and offering a broader arsenal of RPG mechanics to conquer the Commonwealth Wastleland with.

32. Metal Gear Solid V

Metal Gear Solid V feels like something the Metal Gear Solid series always wanted to be. With not one, but two open worlds to immerse yourself in, the fifth entry in the saga lets you as the player decide that the best means of approach is.

33: NieR: Automata

NieR: Automata oozes style, and that’s not just a comment on the game’s character designs. An amazing soundtrack and surprisingly well-written story accompany this amalgamation of hack-and-slash and shooter genres into one slick-looking package. It’s one of the best JRPGs of this generation and also one of the best PS4 games of all time.

34. Dark Souls 3

Dark Souls 3 is the final chapter in the fan-acclaimed franchise, and boy does it end on a high note. Answering all the questions that had arisen in entries prior all while continuing to deliver on combat that’s challenging but not unfair. Dark Souls 3 is well-deserving of all the praise it has received.

35. Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn is about much more than robot dinosaurs. Though that may be what piques your interest, you’ll stay to learn more about protagonist Aloy’s journey and grow stronger as she does throughout the title, unraveling the mystery behind this primitive future of mankind.

36. Persona 5

If you have yet to jump in on the series bandwagon, look no further. Persona 5’s combat is simple for newcomers yet engaging enough to warrant all that time invested by die-hard Persona veterans. This sequel delivers on all the greatness we’ve come to expect from the series after Persona 4, and we can’t wait for more.

37. Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V feels right at home on the PS4. It’s a major step up from its presence on last-generation hardware, boasting a gorgeous California city to explore and a well-written and memorable cast of characters (Trevor’s the best, but maybe that’s just me). Its popularity today serves as a testament to just how great it is.

38. The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3 is the true definition of a role-playing game. With an incredibly detailed, massive open world that’ll take you months to completely explore, there’s simply no other experience like it right now on the market. Rest assured that if you want a game that will last you a long time, The Witcher 3 has got you covered and it’s easily one of the best PS4 games of all time.

39. Bloodborne

Bloodborne is scary, brutal, intriguing, and rewarding. It takes the Dark Souls formula and fits it into a grotesque world like no other, filled with nightmares that only Lovecraft himself would imagine.

40. Uncharted 4

Uncharted 4 is everything we had hoped it would be. As a fitting conclusion to Nathan Drake’s story on best PS4 games, it serves as a testament to the power of family and acts as a reminder to cherish the ones you love. The Uncharted series has always had its share of wonderful moments, but none have come close to evoking the feelings found in the fourth and final entry to the saga.

41. Mortal Kombat 11

Mortal Kombat 11 takes past and present and literally merges them together in a time-bending story where old versions of classic characters meet their future selves and aren’t always pleased with what they see. It’s all part of plan by new villain Kronika as she tries to remake the MK timeline the way that she wants it to be. In addition to an excellent story, Mortal Kombat 11 features gameplay that is arguably the best in the series so far, and offers a ton of replay value.

42. Tekken 7

Tekken 7 has remained a stalwart of the fighting game community because of its commitment to faithfully updating its classic gameplay without messing with what has worked so well in the series over the years and it remains one of the best fighting games, and just overall one of the best PS4 games of all time.

43. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice marked yet another hit game from From Software, the developers behind Dark Souls III and Bloodborne two other games on this list of the best PS4 games of all time. In Sekiro you play as a Samurai and rather than dodge rolling your way to victory, you’ll need to carefully mix it up in fast-paced gameplay that will test your ability to use tools, movement, and parries to survive while keeping the offense going.

44. Celeste

Celeste is arguably one of the best platformers of this generation and it came from a small development team of just a few people. Come for the difficult, but fair platforming action that will build on everything you learned with each passing level. Stay for the heartwarming story about overcoming anxiety and never giving up.

45. Dead Cells

Dead Cells combines all of the great progress we’ve seen in both the rogue-like and Metroidvania genres over the course of this generation and rolls it all into a slick, polished package with an appealing retro art style that makes it not only one of the best indie games in recent memory, but also one of the best ever.

46. Valkyria Chronicles 4

Valkyria Chronicles 4 marks a return to form for the series that has been just so-so since the first game in the series released back for the PlayStation 3. VC 4 brings back the larger scale battles, and tells a new side of the story about The Empire, Gallia, and the Atlantic Federation’s massive war over Europa.

47. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 not only reinvigorates its own classic gameplay by mixing the best of the retro and modern gameplay elements the series has experimented with over the year; but it also adds a new battle royale mode, Blackout, that is among the best in the industry right now. While removing the campaign was a bit controversial, there’s no doubt that the core multiplayer modes have benefitted from additional development time.

48. Fortnite

You either love or hate Fortnite. There’s not a ton of people in the middle. There’s a reason it’s the most popular game of this gaming generation though: polished and unique battle royale gameplay that is constantly getting updated by a company that now has a ton of money to support it for the foreseeable future.

49. Destiny 2

Destiny 2 got off to a rough start during its first year of existence, which caused us pause when we initially made this list. However, it has made the cut since then after its Forsaken expansion changed the game and fixed a ton of problems. Destiny 2 is one of the richest, deepest, and most fun to play looter-shooter games on the market and one of the best PS4 games.

50. The Division 2

The Division 2 proves that if you listen to fan feedback, acknowledge past mistakes, and actually implement all of that you’ve learned fans will give you a second chance. The first game was missed potential because of launch problems, but The Division 2 is the polar opposite. It came out strong out of the gates and instantly vaulted itself towards the top of the best shooter/RPG hybrid looter-shooter games.

The best games on the PlayStation 4

Exclusive console games in our time — this is such a rare thing. There are fewer and fewer reasons for developers to love one particular platform at the expense of all others. Globalization, however.

That’s why the first five lines of our Playstation 4 top hits are not about console hits, but about hits as such.

8 002 All rating of games.

The main game of 2016 “suddenly” created the most circles on the water. Overwatch always, Overwatch everywhere. At the time of this writing, there are rumors on the network that they want to pull our owl even on the Switch globe. So great is the temptation to sell a bright team shooter about the struggle between progressive armed good and muddy and also armed evil also on the console from Nintendo, well, let us at least discuss aloud the skin of an unkilled bear.

Yes, I mean that Overwarch is now the main hit on the Playstation 4. But not the main hit of the Playstation 4. As well as the magnificent GTA V, waiting for its inevitable dive to the bottom of For Honor, the textbook Fallout 4, Witcher 3 and in general most of the top. If we are to make a postscript to the table and talk about the best PS4 games, it is perhaps worth taking out the multiplatform out of the brackets. nine0003

Then the first thing to do is to break the newly established rule and start singing the Final Fantasy XV ode. What can we do, we have it at the very top of “purely console” projects, and really, well, just a prefix-platform, to the marrow, and just very good. PS4 without FFXV in the collection is somehow not serious. Four grease-filled fantasy Japanese from the future run through deserts and jungles, catch fish, grill it on a fire, ride a limousine, ride a chocobo, inherit the throne, save a princess, write a cookery encyclopedia, play drama in a world unfriendly to common sense. For the sake of what else to buy a prefix, if not for the sake of it. nine0003

Oh, by the way, the console now has a western version of the pastoral post-apocalypse that has gone for you. It’s called Horizon: Zero Dawn. Now this thing is quite exclusive. As in the good old days, with the proud inscription «Only on the Playstation» on the box and other pathos. A sandbox about flocks of wild mechanical dinosaurs closes our top ten, but personally your humble would gladly swap the third and tenth positions right now. Well, nothing, everything has its time. The ethereal noise comes and goes, but the main hits remain; Zero Dawn will certainly pass the test of time, no doubt about it. nine0003

Next on our list is another exception, The Last of Us. Everything is simple here — you didn’t play this post-apocalypse (this time action-packed and about zombies) on Playstation 3, play on PS4.

The same can be said about The Last Guardian. Haven’t had a chance to try an exclusive adventure in a world abandoned by people (muahaha, not again, but again, today about the ruins of magical Maya) on PS3? .. And no one had a chance, here we have a crazy long-term construction that fed the interested public with breakfast for almost eight years and managed to crawl to a new generation. Frankly speaking, TLG did not turn out to be a masterpiece at all, just an “above average” project, with its own charm and its own noticeable flaws. But due to its exclusivity and media longevity, the game deserves an honorable mention in the annals of console history. With 76 points, this story is even playable! nine0003

This is if Uncharted 4 has already been completed. The action about the tireless and indestructible Nathan Drake is doubly exclusive: in addition to the first obvious reason, our hit is also not dedicated to the post-apocalypse. Everyone is running, jumping, swimming, flying, shooting and doing other entertainment in our living civilized world that has not yet known Ragnarok. I think it is impossible to pass by such an original project.

Well, for dessert — a hereditary console tactical turn-based Disgaea 4 about an endless strategic grind in the world of touching demons. It is recommended for acquaintance to all fans of tactical games who are not alien to frank Japanese. nine0003

PS4 is planning new Yakuza and Persona in the near future. We are waiting, sir.
