Hey everybody so couple weeks ago, gamestop re-upped their PS2s for a solid price so I finally bought one and am able to finally play persona 3 & nocturne (also have silent hill 2 on the way !)
Anyway I purchased one of the generic HDMI to ps2 converters on amazon (knowing that they where absolute garbage but thought it would at least be somewhat fine. The games are certainly playable but my god are some things just jumbled messes that I wanted to see what I could do to fix it. I purchased these component cables on amazon as my HDTV is a bit older and has slots for those.
I just got them and the picture is not better and there might be more noise on the screen now (if thats the right word). I have seen the HD retrovision component cables that people swear by but not sure if those would really make any difference, or am I gonna have to pull out bank to get any decent picture, would love suggestions on just anything that would make things a jumbled mess of pixels at times.

OSSC or Retrotink2x
Definitely use RGB or Component cables.

I’m not familiar with those cable but yeah probably low quality causing noise and colors to be off. HD retrovisions are good quality so shouldn’t have those problems. Don’t think they are in stock anywhere now though (I’ve been looking)
HD Retrovision cables straight into the TV might be best for picture quality as other good solutions will probably use bob deinterlacing which looks worse but wont add lag. TV’s deinterlacing would add a decent amount of lag but for turnbased stuff I’m not sure that’s a big deal.
Alternatively maybe look into rad2x cable. Might be the cheapest/simplest solution other then plugging the component cables into the TV.
See this thread for some more info on other options and resources too.

Long video but it goes over most if not all methods for PS2 to HDTV connectivity:

So would you say if I purchased a retrotink2x and used my component cables I would have a fix in my problem ? Should I buy better component cables as well ? If I did those two things do you think I would have a decent enough picture ?

No, the cables would still have noise unless you get better ones. Do you have or are planning to add more retro consoles? If not look at the rad2x since its cheaper and wont need component cables. Just needs an additional HDMI cable with mini HDMI on one end. It’s the same tech as the retrotink. Downside is it wont work on other consoles.

Sort of. OSSC is the better option. And the video linked by Natec above will definitely have some good information too.
Here’s what it will look like.
OSSC vs RetroTink 2X for PS2 480i
This video shows a comparison between the OSSC and RetroTink 2X with a Playstation 2 connected via YPbPr component cables and running in 480i resolution. The…

You could also get a Framemeister which has decent deinterlacing.
Just fyi — nothing will come close to a CRT for PS2 though. It’s really the only device that plays 480i perfectly.
By the way, you should absolutely use component cables or RGB if you go this route. Never go with that yellow cable for video (composite).

No I am pretty focused on PS2 as I have never had one, so much to explore. I guess the rad2x is probably the better option for me but is the one they have listed that works for «sony playstation» also work for the ps2 or is that a separate one ?

Yes it does, mentions it in the description and reviews. It won’t pass-through 480p though but that’s only a tiny portion of the PS2 library and the regular retrotink has the same issue. Neither game you mentioned outputs that anyway.

That is an option too. Nothing beats original hardware on a good CRT for me, but that is certainly is a decent alternative method. It may be preferable to upscaling honestly.

There was a similar recently that should have some good tips for you.
It appears my 4K TV has brought my PS2-playing days to an end
I’ve had a PS4 for a few years, but despite I still mainly gamed on my PS2 as the PS1 and PS2 eras are my favorite in gaming. My favorite gaming moments of the past 5 years are playing games like Parasite Eve, original Resident Evil games, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid and Persona 3. ..

To answer the thread title question, I’d say the OSSC beacuse its lag free. Playing on a fast monitor nets you a very CRT like experience in terms of responsiveness. I’ll trade picture quality to a frame of lag (or more) any day. And honestly, the (bob)deinterlacing with 960p looks great anyway
PS2 games weren’t designed with lag in mind. Some games suffer more than others but if you are into those kinds of games, get the RAD2x cables, a Retrotink or the OSSC.

This is an issue very near and dear to my heart. I’m lucky enough to have a BC PS3 + an mClassic for the best possible PS2 output to a modern TV, but in your case I’d recommend the Rad2x cables. I think they’re the best bang-for-your-buck solution for your setup. That’s assuming your TV has decent, low-latency scaling of 480p content.
If you really wanna go ham get an mClassic as well and feed the Rad2x through that. Then you’ll get an upscale to 1080p along with some post-processing AA and improved contrast.

I also had a bad experience with cheap component cables. Since my HD tv still has the inputs, I thought it would be the easiest way to get a good experience. But the ones I got have some persistent audio buzz. I’m currently waiting on my Rad2x. The Rad2x will be better long term since I’ll probably want a 4k tv soon and won’t have the component inputs any longer.
