eFootball 2022 failed at release. Rolled out a raw demo version
On July 21, 2021, Konami announced the rebranding of the PES series.
The new game was made free and called eFootball. The prefix «e» referred to the esports future of the project, and the trendy Unreal Engine would in theory provide excellent graphics quality. But in the fall, PES fans were in for a big surprise.
Konami gave gamers 9 commands, didn’t add a single major mode, and ended up calling the broken game a demo. EFootball worked terribly! The textures were washed in the game, the animations of the faces gave out creepy grimaces, and the fans in the stands turned into cardboard blanks.
The game has been torn to shreds. Footsim became the most negative game on Steam (only 9% of positive reviews on release) and the main competitor of GTA: The Trilogy in the dispute for the most disgusting game of the year. If at least someone played the Rockstar product, then no one needed the new PES — no more than a few thousand people a day entered eFootball 2022. It seemed that the game would be declared a joke and closed.
Konami fixed the game.
There are almost no bugs left, but the graphics are far from perfect
Despite the resounding failure, Konami continued to work on the project. On April 14, patch 1.0 was released, in which animations and gameplay were reworked, and the Dream Team online mode was added.
The eFootball graphics had the most questions. In the fall, it seemed to the players that it was specially worsened and sharpened for a mobile version. But everything is simpler: Konami simply did not cope with the new engine.
The new PES is ridiculously disgusting: we prove it with screenshots. Players on Unreal Engine look great — the number of polygons exceeds FIFA 22. Players from partner teams turned out especially well. In some places, the graphics manage to show photorealism.
True, the latest version of eFootball still has problems. Konami’s footsima lawn is significantly inferior to FIFA — instead of blades of grass and bumps, the coating resembles a varnished floor. Leaves questions global illumination.
If, when the graph is approaching, it pleases the eye, then in the general plan the picture looks faded, and the shadows seem unnatural.
Cut scenes feel unoptimized. On average graphics cards, drawdowns of up to 20-30 FPS are possible, which is surprising for the shareware game . The footsim picture has been cleaned up, but not yet polished to a shine.
The gameplay of eFootball 2022 is exciting. It is very similar to PES 2020: the same short passes, clumsy players and a slow pace of the game. The transfer of mechanics to the new engine turned out to be as close as possible to the original series, although it sometimes feels unusual.
The gameplay, like the graphics, is not yet perfect. The new PES has a slow response, which is exacerbated by the momentum of the players. Often there are situations when switching between players takes too long — hence the failure to interrupt the opponent’s fast attacks and ridiculous own goals. Also, AI does not always respond adequately to clean balls.
The simulator should be played slowly and calmly. Despite the shortcomings, eFootball can be enjoyed now. But for now, only online.
The core of eFootball is the Dream Team online mode. But he also has questions
The main novelty of the «release» patch is the release of the «Dream Team» online mode. On April 14, gamers got access to team building and matches, and veterans of the project were given fat bonuses in the form of a million GP and legendary football players.
Dream Team’s key features are transfers, team styles and free choice of schemes. Buying players in PES has been a long time coming — player contracts looked like a joke against the background of the live market in FIFA Ultimate Team. Football players are expensive, but sane for a free game.
The main problem of the innovation is the incomprehensible status of purchased cards in the team. In fact, instead of a transfer, we rent players for a year. Little is known about the mechanics of contract renewal , but the price tag in the store scares: for 60 days of renewal, one player is asked for 25,000 eFootball points, which are not yet available.
For comparison: the improved trio Aspas-Rakitic-Aspilikueta from the next tab costs only 15 thousand. Probably, points will be awarded for tournaments, and the contract renewal price will decrease.
eFootball packs have separate donation coins. You cannot open loot boxes for GP, but with the transfer market, this does not look like a big problem. The value of GPs has increased markedly — they are hard to earn, and it will take months to save up for the lineup of stars. However, you can always choose cheaper players and point them up.
eFootball online mode has got team styles. Each coach has 5 of them: «Ball control», «Quick counterattack», «Counterattack (long)», «All over the field» and «Long pass». The higher the style level of the coach, the stronger the players. For example, Pep Guardiola (Luis A. Roman) is the best in control, and Jurgen Klopp (G. Zeitzler) breaks in dagger counterattacks. Expensive trainers have some strong formations, but the ~70 style will suffice to get you started.
Pumping the teamwork of players simplifies the task.
The first season of eFootball started on April 21 with regular competitions and ranking divisions. Authentic tournaments allow you to play with real lineups and earn GP for the Dream Team. The eFootball league is similar to Rivals from FIFA. In-game currency is given both for the promotion of the division and for the phase — but it lasts for a whole month. The most useless are quick matches, for which they do not even give experience.
The opinions of the fans of the series about the patch are divided. The rating of recent reviews on Steam has reached 50% — the game has finally received positive reviews. Players are still unhappy with the lack of single-player modes, but have become much more supportive of the look and feel of eFootball.
The release of PES took place — in the spring and without a standing ovation. It will take time for Konami to regain the trust of the players, but the company is on the right track.
