Persona 4 Golden PC Version To Receive Big Update Soon

By
Daire Behan

The PC version of Persona 4 Golden is set to receive a big update ahead of the upcoming remastered console port.

Persona 4 Golden is slated to receive a major update on PC ahead of its launch on consoles in January 2023. Atlus surprised everyone in 2020 when it brought Persona 4 Golden, previously a PlayStation Vita exclusive, to PC via Steam, establishing itself as a major publisher on the platform. Now, over two years later, Persona 4 Golden is finally gearing up for its debut on new consoles, and data miners have discovered that the new console version will be bringing many new features to the existing PC version too.

Persona 4 Golden first released on PlayStation Vita in Japan on June 24th 2012 before later arriving in North America on November 20th 2012. The game is an expanded remaster of 2008’s Persona 4 for PlayStation 2, and introduces new story and gameplay elements and a slew of new quality of life improvements over the original game. In 2020, over three years after the release of its sequel, Persona 5, Atlus brought Persona 4 Golden to PC, marking the mainline series’ debut on a non-PlayStation platform.

RELATED: Persona 5 Royal is a Hit on Steam

Earlier this year, Atlus announced that it would be bringing Persona 4 Golden to consoles including PS4, PS5, Xbox platforms, and Nintendo Switch alongside Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Portable. While the Persona 5 Royal ports arrived last month, the Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable ports are gearing up for release in January, but not before Atlus gives current PC owners of Persona 4 Golden a major update. As discovered by Twitter users Sewer56 and Rudiger, pre-release files for the update note that Persona 4 Golden will be receiving new features such as a quick save/suspend feature and new graphics settings. Both users also note that the entire game’s file system has been reworked, making existing mods incompatible.

Rudiger’s Twitter thread elaborates further on what the update will introduce for the game, and some elements that will not be changed, such as the implementation of motion blur and the controversial Denuvo DRM inclusion. The update will introduce many new features to bring it closer to the remastered version releasing in January however, including new credits for the localization staff and a rebranding of the game called «Persona 4 Golden Remastered Edition» that appears in the original credits now. According to the data miners, the new update vastly improves performance for the game, which is definitely a positive.

While Persona 4 Golden is a critically acclaimed game and the reviews of its Steam port reflect that, many fans were left unsatisfied with the newly introduced bugs and downgrades the PC version featured at launch. While this update does not fix everything, early signs indicate that it will be a huge improvement on the Persona 4 Golden experience for PC users.

Persona 4 Golden is available now for PC and PlayStation Vita. The game will release on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on January 19, 2023.

Minimum spoilers . The text will only affect the beginning and the main plot of the game. In the article I will tell you a little about the series of games, the combat system, gameplay and emotions during the game. I’ll mention anime adaptations.

I haven’t played any of the Shin Megami games before, including the Persona series. Persona 4 Golden was my first game in the series. The review was made with an emphasis on the Steam version of the game.

At the time of writing the review, there is no crack for the game on the Internet. There is a team that is engaged in translation, but there is no exact date for the release of the translation.

Megami Tensei and Persona

series in brief

The Persona sub-series is an offshoot of the main Megami Tensei series. The key side of the games are the mythologies of different countries and Demons, which can be recruited into your team. The Megami Tensei series has long been one of the top Japanese RPG franchises in Japan. Megami Tensei games are constantly paying off and have been heard by players for a long time. In its popularity, it recedes only in the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series of games.

A feature of the Persona series of games is the ability to summon one’s Alter Ego, called «Persona». Starting with the third part of the series, the games combine elements of Japanese role-playing games and school life simulation. Spending time with different people, the main character establishes Social Links, reflecting relationships with others. Social Links give bonus EXP when merging Personas in the Velvet Room and a number of other bonuses.

Major Arcana Tarot

The peculiarity of the fourth part is the Tarot cards, which are used to summon Persons. Each of the Persons is associated with one of the Tarot Major Arcana cards. The main character can store several Personas at once and switch them during the battle.

Plot and characters

The game takes place in the village of Inaba. Inexplicably mysterious murders begin to take place in it: bodies are found hanging from electrical or telephone wires, with no lead to the police. At the same time, a rumor begins to spread throughout the city.

You have to watch the TV off, alone, at midnight sharp during rainy weather. While you are looking at your reflection, another person will appear on the TV. And this person is your soul mate!

Deciding to test this rumor, our protagonist, along with his friends, finds himself in the world inside the TV, filled with thick fog. The TV world is inhabited by monsters called Shadows. There they meet their aggressive counterparts, which symbolize their repressed feelings.

After the victory, the heroes awaken the ability to summon their Personas and form the Exploration Team. This is where our investigation of the mysticism around the TV world and mysterious murders begins. It will be an unforgettable adventure.

The game has bright and lively characters who quickly begin to evoke sympathy for themselves. Everyone, including the secondary characters, has their own distinct sides, fears, hobbies, habits, and problems. By strengthening the Social Link with the character, we will learn more and more about his problems and fears that he hides from others but wants to share with you.

Gameplay and Dungeon System

Every day in Persona 4 is divided into several periods, such as «Morning», «After school» or «Evening». Some actions can only be performed at certain times. We have to choose each time with whom to spend our time. Can spend time with friends and improve Social Link , or we can go to work and upgrade the characteristics of the main character. At the beginning of the game, this is wildly tiring and seems difficult, but closer to the middle you already begin to plan for several days ahead.

One of the problems of the game is that you can’t walk slowly here. I don’t know if this is implemented on the gamepad, but I didn’t find how to do it on the keyboard. Sometimes you just want to slowly walk around the locations under Heartbeat, Heartbreak, and not rush like a hurricane. This little thing is sorely missed.

Getting into the TV world according to the story, we will need to clear the Dungeons. All Dungeons have their own design, musical accompaniment and unique opponents. Each Dungeon has a certain number of randomly generated levels. A large period of time is given for the passage of the Dungeons, you can have time to relax with friends between visits.

While clearing Dungeons we will have to fight Shadows and Bosses. Upon encountering one of the Shadows, a fight begins. In battle, you can gain an advantage and start your turn first if you attack the Shadow before it notices you. Treasure chests can also be found on the levels.

The Dungeons themselves are corridors where Shadows spawn. Shadows are both gray and red. Red shadows are more dangerous than gray ones. Sometimes the behavior of shadows breaks down and they can hit the wall. It was insanely interesting to explore the Dungeons and eliminate every enemy encountered.

Combat System and Team Spirit

The combat system is turn-based, similar to classic JRPGs and all games in the Shin Megami series. The player can both fully control the members of the group, and give instructions on how to act in battle. Sometimes the characters can act recklessly and stupidly, during the battle with the bosses it is better to control directly. The game ends with the death of the protagonist, although allies can be resurrected in battle to your heart’s content.

You can attack with both physical and magical attacks associated with the elements. Enemies can be immune to some elements and also have a weakness to others. You will not be able to mindlessly press buttons using mana and win like in other JRPGs, you need to constantly take into account and hit on the weaknesses of the enemy. In case you don’t like the combat system, you can lower the game’s difficulty settings.

If you hit an opponent’s weak point, he will be knocked down and your turn will continue until all opponents are knocked down. One of the characters in your group can offer his help and knock down one of the enemies.

When all enemies are knocked down, it will be possible to use All-Out Attack , a powerful attack in which all player characters simultaneously attack all enemies. During this skirmish, we inflict colossal damage on opponents.

The feeling of teamwork is exactly what many JRPGs and games in general lack. All your actions during the battle will be commented, and all characters’ lines will be voiced. Everyone is screaming and tearing their throats to help us win and contribute to the game. It creates an incredible sense of teamwork, one of the best aspects of this game.

Important errand and Velvet Room

I did not mention this earlier and left it for now. At the very beginning of the game, before we get used to the controls, we wake up in a limousine. The limousine is moving in an unknown direction and there is thick fog outside the window.

The long-nosed old man Igor and his assistant Margaret tell us that we ended up in this village for a reason, we have an important task, which we can solve by strengthening ties with other people. Who are Igor and Margaret? What is the important task and why us? We will get answers during the game.

In Velvet Room , you can create a new persona during the game by connecting two or more existing personas. The new person will inherit some of the skills. If the Persona arcana belongs to one of the characters with Social Link , then it receives an additional bonus in levels.

Velvet Room is one of the most interesting locations in my opinion. The mysticism that revolves around Velvet Room is simply amazing. Plus, the music, Aria Of Soul plays in the background, which noticeably stands out from the others with operatic female vocals.

Musical accompaniment

There are many compositions in the game, each with its own mood. For each time of day, its own composition is played. It also changes depending on the weather and seasons. Doesn’t get bored.

Most of the game’s music was composed by Shoji Meguro and performed by Shihoko Hirata. It is worth saying right away that the girl is talented and sings with her soul.

All songs are in Engrish language, the lyrics are quite hard to understand. On YouTube in the comments, this has long become a local meme. Although it is worth noting that starting from opening Persona 4:Dancing All Night less engrish. This does not spoil the composition in any way, just an interesting detail.

One of the best openings I’ve ever seen. I’ve watched it over a hundred times and I can watch as many more.

Separately, I would like to note the combat composition Reach Out To The Truth . At first, there is nothing catchy track, but when it is played again and again, you quickly start to get used to it and already sing along. It is worth saying that the song reflects the struggle of the internal conflict within the characters, which is very cool!

The music in the game is able to reflect the whole range of emotions. Tracks correspond to the mood of the game, and some even want to listen outside the game.

Chad Narukami and Anime Game Adaptation

The game was filmed as an anime series for 25 episodes from the studio AIC (Gentle Bite and Date A Live). The series briefly retells the events of the game, focusing on combat and character development. Some events have been changed for the sake of timing. Everything that took several hours of play fit into one or two episodes.

One of the distinguishing features of the anime is the main character — Yu Narukami . In the anime, the main character was given a name and character. He is strong, calm, polite and just cool. Girls now and then stick to him like magnets.

I want to mention the Japanese cast of voice actors. I went through the game with English voice acting and looked at the anime in Japanese + subtitles. Almost all characters sound much better in their native language. But in my opinion, in the English dub, Adachi, Kanji and Naoto did a much better job.

There is also a second anime series — Persona 4 The Golden Animation for 12 episodes from A-1 Pictures (Kaguya-sama: in love as in war, Your April lie and The city where I am not). The series will be about all the innovations that came with the Golden version (new character, locations and several new events).

Without watching the first series, it will not be clear what is happening. A lot was cut out and the story jumps. All attention is focused around Marie and the final game. If in the game she revealed herself a little, then here is a fan service for her fans. It is worth watching if you liked Marie or if the first season is not enough for you.

I am you, you are me: Summing up

All of us have a side that we reject, ignore or fear all the time. She’s hard to accept. But once you do that, everything becomes possible.

Inaba, this is the place you don’t want to leave. All your friends, family and loving girl gathered here. The characters are alive, the locations are beautiful and the fights are interesting. Drama, Comedy, Science Fiction and Detective all rolled into one. The game runs perfectly for a hundred hours and does not have time to get bored. A huge amount of in-game content can encourage you to replay the game.

In the universe of the game there is also a fighting game with familiar characters and rhythm game Persona 4: Dancing All Night . If you own a Nintendo 3DS then you can check out Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth . Anime is recommended to watch after beating the original game.

Special thanks to Kai for helping me write the article
