Computer games of the 90s
Computer games of the 90s are increasingly attracting with their simplicity, logic and of course nostalgia for the dashing 90s ….)) Below is a list of the 10 most successful PC games of the 90s .
1.Unreal Tournament — 1999
Computer games 90 s
There is some debate among fans of the series about which of the games «Unreal Tournament» is better, but there is a strong argument in favor of the original.
- It’s been over 20 years since its original release and the game remains incredibly fun. It clearly lacks the glitz of a modern title, but compared to games like Doom and Wolfenstein, it has aged quite gracefully)).

Given that Epic games is currently focusing most of its attention on Fortnite, it’s unlikely that the developer will be returning to the franchise anytime soon.
However, the game’s legacy lives on, both thanks to its groundbreaking engine and the inspiration it provided to the developers of countless other FPS games.
2.Shadow Warrior — 1997
Thinking back to old PC games from the 90’s, Shadow Warrior comes to mind. Unlike the Unreal Tournament, the original Shadow Warrior game hasn’t aged at all, and neither has the game’s protagonist, Lo Wan.
In truth, the game was already a little dated at the time of its release, but still managed to provide an incredibly enjoyable experience, even with its often offensive dialogue and last-generation visuals.
- Like John Romero’s Daikatan, if the game had appeared just a few years earlier, it would likely have been considered groundbreaking. Regardless, its great conditions and tough fights helped set it apart from most of the competition and provided hours of fun for those who wanted to try it out.
3.Team Fortress Classic — 1999
Team Fortress started life in 1996 as a half-life mod before the full version was released in the late nineties.
- With nine unique classes and a wide array of weapons, it was one of the biggest titles of the decade and set the stage for many of Valve’s future games.
The most notable of these was obviously Team Fortress 2; a game that remains incredibly popular to this day.
Any fans of the sequel who want to see where it all started should definitely consider checking out the original.
- Computer games from the 90s are unfortunately associated with outdated game mechanics and poor visuals, they create an unpleasant experience….
However, as part of the game’s history, it serves as a great reminder of a bygone era and offers an interesting insight into the roots of the entire series.
4.System Shock — 1994
System Shock has a lot in common with Looking Glass’s Ultima Underworld games. Where it differed, however, was in its 3D engine, which was far ahead of anything else in use at the time!
- The gameplay was also ahead of its time, going far beyond typical shooting mechanics.
The sequel to the game and the expanded edition released in 2015 are certainly nicer experiences than the original, but neither was as innovative or as influential.
While Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark are considered the best games of their time, none of them could match the high quality visuals featured in Turok 2: Seeds of Evil!!
- While several sequels have been released in the years since, Turok 2 is the best the series has to offer.
The game still looks pretty good today, and thanks to the 2019 Switch remaster, it’s easily accessible to today’s gamers.
The lack of multiplayer is a little disappointing, although that was one of the strongest virtues of the original game…
6.Doom — 1993
The phrase «Doom helped me graduate from high school» could be a meme. It was simple, wild and deeply satisfying. The original Doom took the gaming world by storm, and it can be argued that it expanded the entire genre.
Pretty much everything in today’s first-person shooters, including satirical levels of violence, sophisticated weapons, and multiplayer features, started with this game. Every FPS has a BFG these days, but Doom came up with this joke.
7.Wolfenstein 3D — 1992
Computer games of the 90s are of course associated with FPS games, they experienced their golden age in the 1990s.
In 1981, a game called Castle Wolfenstein was released that mixed old school video game lore and storylines with the FPS genre.
- It’s easy to fall behind a fearless World War II hero who wants to kill Nazis and recover stolen relics.
Wolfenstein 3D was inspired by the original Wolfenstein and was created by id Software, the same people who created Doom and Quake.
This version was faster, bloodier and more intuitive in every way than the previous installment, but the title is a little misleading.
Today 3D can mean real 3D or even virtual reality, but in this case it was just an expression about improved graphics and gameplay.
8.GoldenEye 007 — 1997
Most video games based on movies are not very successful. But Goldeneye is a well-known exception to this rule.
- When it comes to FPS games from the 1990s, this is something everyone knows, even if they haven’t touched a video game for decades.
The film of the same name was also a hit, the first in which Pierce Brosnan took over the role after years of hesitation.
The original idea for this game made it a classic side-scroller, but the success of FPS games at the time inspired the Nintendo team to develop a different type of first-person game.
Multiplayer modes have existed before, but Goldeneye has improved the whole deathmatch concept and raised the bar.
9.Half-Life — 1998
Half-Life has an interesting place in gaming history. Not only was it the culmination of everything that made FPS games so great in the late 1990s, it was also Valve’s debut title.
- By this time the «shooting gallery» concept had fallen out of favor for the same reasons it was so popular in the beginning: simple point of view, blood on the face, and lack of plot.
This game reversed all these trends and included a complex storyline. The game has been so influential that it has inspired several mods and third-party remakes and sequels over the past two decades, including Black Mesa, which was released in 2020.
10.Quake — 1996
The successor to the Doom series and another offering from id Software, Quake combined the FPS format with the best features from other popular genres, namely survival horror and medieval fantasy RPGs.
- The entire game has also been beautifully rendered, starting a trend in which FPS players will begin to demand more graphics and game design, which was not a priority in the past.
This game tested the true depth of the third dimension in video games, and every shot since then has followed suit.
Today these are all the old popular computer games of the 90s)). Also read about old computer games of the 2000s for girls.
