Super Paper Mario

Paper Mario isn’t just out of this world … it’s out of this dimension. What at first glance appears to be a

2-d sidescroller ripped straight from the pages of the Paper Mario universe soon turns into a 3-D action-adventure that defies all video game logic as Mario, Bowesrer, Peach, and Luigi as they team up to deafet a new enemy…  COUNT BLECK!!!!! To stop him from destroying all realms.

Tips,cheats, and unlockables

Dashell the Pixl

Clear Flipside’s Pit of 100 Trials to unlock Dashell the Pixl, which allows you to move more quickly.

Dashell the Pixl

Clear Flipside’s Pit of 100 Trials to unlock Dashell the Pixl, which allows you to move more quickly.

Barry the Pixl

After beating Chapter 3, return to 3-1 and talk to the bush that has the spikey pixl behind it. He will congratulate you on finding Tippi and join your group. His power is a spike barer that deflects physical attacks from enemies and bosses.

Bleu Hair for Peach

After you beat the game, go talk to Bleu in Flopside.

Infinite 3D

You must defeat Flopside Pit of 100 Trails twice and get Mario’s Card.

Hammer Whacker

Acquire a Golden Card found in a treasure chest in the back room of The Overthere in Flopside.

Fast Experience, Coins, and Items

Head to Chapter 5-4. Travel through the first section to the metal door, which you should go through. In the second area, head past the save point. You will drop down a level, and there will be a ? block down below. On the block, Helper Marios can be collected. Then, jump onto the block and edge towards the nearby tube releasing Floro Sapiens. Switch to the Bommer (Pixi), drop him, and wait until the head detaches. This will eliminate the enemy for 600 experience, plus coins and dropped items.

Bonus Coins

Whenever you get possession of Whacka Bumps, bring them to the chef in Flipside. She’ll cook them up (making them Roasted Whacka Bumps), and increase their value by 50 coins, from 150 coins to 200 coins. (unverified)

Coins and Amazy Dayzee

Unlock Flopside, beat chapter 5 and have 100 coins (to start the exploit) or some Catch Card SPs. This coin exploit lets you buy the rest of the treasure maps and enemy catch cards.

If you don’t have 100 coins just beat chapter 1 again and defeat all enemies you’ll probably have 100 coins then.

With 100 coins, go to Flopside’s first floor through the blasted wall and enter the card shop called Fondest Hopes. Talk to the sales clerk at the counter and select «Buy a Catch Card SP» then say «yes» he’ll give you the card, then say «no» when he asks if you want more Catch Card SPs.

After you have a Catch Card SP, leave the shop use the return Pipe Merlon gave you in the beginning of the game which will return you to the top of Flipside Tower.

Go to the Light Blue door and select chapter 5-2. Go through the door at the end of the first stage (not chapter, but rather the area you first arrive in). Turn right and go past the pipe above your head past the next 3 pipes.

Next, enter the door next to the two blocks that is also next to a Cherbil. Clear the gap and you will come to a Stone Buzzy. Kill the Stone Buzzy, and where you land after you kill him flip the world to 3D.

Immediately you see a yellow flower enemy called an Amazy Dayzee. Quickly go to your quick menu by pressing 1 and 2 at the same time, use the Catch Card SP and turn the enemy into a card.

If the Amazy Dayzee flips to 2d do not use the catch card while in 3d, flip back to 2d and then use it.

Grab the card then use the return pipe again. Go back to the shop where you bought the Catch Card SP sell the Amazy Dayzee card it is worth a whopping 300 coins then you can buy 3 Catch Card SPs.

One Time Cash Stash

For those of you that want coins fast, go to (5-1) or the land of Cragnons for this enricher you will have to have dottie, when you fall to the stone podium go all the way to the right ’till you hit a wall go into 3-D and use dottie to go through it, then go through the first pipe, collect coins and go out the next one to be on the elevated hill then the whacka will appear jump on him and a whacka fruit will come out.

After that turn to 3-D and get the treasure chest it has a «important item» item and go out of that area now go the left of the level until you see a stone hut that has a mushroom sign go in and these whacka fruit sell for 150 coins you can keep hitting the Whacka eight times until he says, «I’m outta here!».

That opportunity never comes up again but the coins you get are well over the maximum 999 Mario can carry. Two «bone breaking» installments should let you exploit this hapless run-down to the max.

World 2-3 Safe Combo

You broke a vase and now you have to come up with a million Rubees. Head down one floor from the prisoners and go down one level. Go forward and grab the slimming pixel, which lets Mario go into 2D in 3D mode (paper effect). Use this ability to access the vault safe at the bank. Safe code:41262816.

Piccolo Pixl

You must first have completed Chapter 5 to be able to complete this. First, go to Merlee’s house on the 2nd floor in Flopside. You have to jump over her crystal ball to talk to her, otherwise she’ll just offer you charms. She will send you on a fetch mission to Merluvlee on the 2nd floor of Flipside.

From there, you will have to travel to World 1-1. You’re going to be using your Return Pipe quite a bit. Talk to Bestuvius at the end of the first area in 1-1. He’ll send you to talk to Watchitt in Yold Town.

Use your Return Pipe then go back into the red door to get to 1-2. Continue through the area until you get to the town. The third house is Watchitt’s. He will send you on your fourth fetch mission to see Merlumina.

Use the Return Pipe and go back to the red door. Choose to go to 1-4 and travel through the whole chapter. At the end (past where you fought Fracktail), you’ll go into a house and when you run towards the star Merlumina will appear. After a lengthy bit of text, she’ll sign the autograph and you can return to Watchitt in 1-2.

Then go back to 1-1 to give the «you-know-what» to Bestuvius, and then to Flipside to give the Training Machine, a Nintendo DS, to Merluvlee. Finally take the Crystal Ball from her to Merlee in Flopside and she’ll give you a key.

This key can be used on the locked door in Flopside. The door is on the 1st floor through the piece of the wall that you bombed earlier. Inside you’ll find Piccolo. There are only two place I have found to use him.

Go to the 2nd floor of Flipside, flip to 3D and go through the gate across from the White Tower. Instead of crossing the bridge, return to 2D and go to the left of the screen. You’ll see a pipe up above. Use Boomer to blast the bricks and enter it. You’ll now be on the 3rd floor of Flipside.

Piccolo can be used on the block with the music note, which is all the way to the right. You’ll get a Merlee card. In the same place in Flopside you’ll get a Nolrem card.

These are the only place I’ve found so far to use Piccolo.

The Rubees of 2-3

In chapter 2-3 when you break the vase and are asked for one million rubees you have to find a way to make them fast.

There is a generator room that gives you small amounts of ruppes for jumping, and there is a room with a passcode. The passcode is 5963. After going into the room talk to the guy who pays you (he is in the far right of the room) and sign up to be a gerbil.

After doing this you will be sent into a huge ball where you run to make volts. You are paid if you stop and tell him that you are tired. But, instead of running yourself just get a heavy object (not too heavy) and have Mario (or Peach) go to the right of the circle. Put this heavy object on the left button (up if contoller isn’t sideways) and go do something else.

Come back later and stop, you have just gained many rubees without wasting valuable time.

Easy Level Up Points (3-1)

Heres a way to get really fast and high score points. First you must have beaten world 3-1 (well do the whole chapter). Go back to world 3-1 after you have beaten it once and then you know where you meet bowser.

Stay at the warp pipe where the level is you meet Bowser. Take out Throwae (how ever you spell it) and then run to the left. Stop on each of the soccer playing Koopa guys (don’t kill them). Then grab 1 of them. Take him all the way to the left and there should be the ending of the level and a pipe. Hide on the left side of that pipe and throw the koopa down there with you. Make him go in his shell and jump on him and he will start moving.

Jump on him every time he is underneath you. You will master it on youre second time around. He will give you 300 experience every time you jumpo on him and it will let you hit him for about 15 or more times. Making each experience for each koopa 4.5k or more each. And be sure to grabthem. Not the shells they kick at you.

HP Feeder (5-1)

Once, you’ve gotten the Pixl named Dottie, travel back to the Land of the Crag (Chapter 5-1). As soon as you enter the area you’ll be on top of a stone platform. Go all the way to the right of the screen. Go into 3-D and use Dottie to enter the small opening in the wall.

Once in the secret area you’ll go down a pipe and collect a bunch of coins (hit A to see more coins) then exit out of the other pipe. Once you leave the pipe, walk to your right and a little creature called a Whacka should appear. If you jump on his head a Whacka Bump will come out.

These give you 30HP and if you go back into the pipe and come back he’ll reappear. You can get about seven or eight Whacka Bumps before he disappears for good. That’s at least 210 HP for free.

Easy Level Up Points (1-1)                                                         In level 1-1, in the third section, there is a staircase with a koopa coming down. Stand on any of the steps, and as he nears the step above you, jump straight up and time it so you land on him. You will then bounce on him as the turtle shell ricochets back and forth. Your points will multiply ala level 3-1 of the original Super Mario Bros., but if you bounce on him more than 11 times (at 1,000 points), you will start to earn negative 1,000 for each bounce. You can earn a total of 5,500 points this way.Kick the shell after you get 1,000 and you will continue to accumulate points unpunished for every thing the shell hits. Flip into 3D and the shell will follow, so you can hit the hidden group of squiglets. Keep on following the shell as it ricochets back and forth throughout the level (you’ll need Dashell to keep up—otherwise the shell will disappear) and you can earn over 100,000 points in just a few minutes.

Paper Mario, the first game in what became a long-running series, first released for Nintendo 64 in Japan in 2000 and elsewhere 2001. Unlike other Mario games, Paper Mario had a unique visual style as everything was represented as 2D paper cutouts in a 3D world.

As with most Mario games, you are tasked with rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser. This time, he’s stolen the Star Rod and can grant any wish. You must free the seven Star Spirits in order to gain the power necessary to defeat Bowser and save Peach.

As part of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass, Paper Mario is the newest release for the N64 portion. Like the other releases, it maintains the same presentation, visual style, and controls.

Below, you will find complete Paper Mario controls on the Switch and the N64 controller for Switch. Gameplay tips will follow.

To help improve your gameplay adventure, read the below tips to prepare yourself before you begin playing Paper Mario.

Tips for exploring the overworld in Paper Mario

Finding the Hammer!

The overworld is set into different sections, with other areas represented by doors or pathways leading out of the main area. To reach even the next step in a set of stairs, you must jump, which can make climbing stairs a bit of a nuisance. If you come across a green tube, this will transport you back to Mario’s house.

One thing to ensure you do in every area is interact (hit A) with every bush and other items that present a red exclamation point when you’re near. Not every bush will provide you with an item, for example, but it is an easy and cheap way to earn some coins, particularly in the beginning of the game.

Once you unlock the Hammer about ten minutes into the game, hammer (B) the tall trees you come across as they may drop items. These can be coins, consumables like Mushrooms, or even a key item in the early stages of the game that proves a great gift for a certain NPC.

The first save point in the game

Save Blocks are rainbow colored boxes with an “S” inside, similar to the weapon blocks in Mario Kart 64. As its name suggests, these allow you to save your game when hit. However, with the Switch’s “Suspend” capability, you can create a Suspend and Restore Point whenever you want by hitting the minus button ().

You will also come across various interactable objects on the overworld. If you see a heart within a clear box (Heart Block), this will refill your HP and Flower Points (FP, used for abilities) completely.

Super Blocks are blue circles within a golden box, which upgrade your Party Members. There are enough in the game to fully upgrade all of your Party Members.

Brick Blocks can be hit in midair or grounded, using Jump (A) or the Hammer (B) depending on their placement. Some blocks may produce nothing, but Question Mark Blocks will give you coins and items. Some Brick Blocks will be Question Mark Boxes in disguise, so hit all of them!

Springboards will help you jump to higher elevations. Certain areas in the game are only accessible using a springboard, and some items will require the use of one as well.

Larger blocks – such as the Yellow Block that impedes your path early – require the Hammer to destroy. However, the upgraded Stone and Metal Blocks will need upgrades to your Hammer to destroy. These will block both story-related and item hunting paths, so gaining the capability to break them is critical.

The Exclamation Point Switch is a switch with a white exclamation point that is triggered by jumping on the switch. This will reveal hidden paths or cause bridges to form, and are generally used to solve puzzles, though the first one in the game presents a comical scene. A blue one is one-time, while a red one can be used multiple times.

You will also see your forthcoming enemies (and battle) on the overworld. Some will charge at you, some will not. Still, you can gain the advantage prior to battle – or have the tables turned on you.

How battling works in Paper Mario

Landing a First Strike

You can gain a free attack (First Strike) by jumping or hammering an enemy on the overworld map. You can also utilize certain Party Members to initiate a First Strike, dealing more damage than Mario would depending on the character. This will always result in that enemy being hit for damage. Of course, if the battle results in multiple enemies, the front-most enemy will take the damage.

The other advantage to this is that if you successfully land a First Strike to some flying opponents, they will begin the battle grounded and with damage. Flying opponents can only be hit with a jumping attack, but once they’re grounded, you can then use Mario’s Hammer and your Party Member’s grounded attacks to deal damage. Landing a First Strike on flying opponents will make these battles that much less frustrating.

However, be wary, as if you miss your First Strike attempt, certain enemies will instead deal First Strike damage to you. While the Goombas early in the game don’t, stronger enemies later in the game will make you pay for your preemptive mistake.

The battle screen, with Strategize, Items, Jump, and Hammer as the four main options

In the battle menu, you can either attack with Jump or Hammer (with Mario, upgrades requiring FP), use items, or strategize (red flag) by choosing the option on the semi-circle menu. You can switch the attack order with a Party Member by using Z or ZL. Certain enemies can’t be attacked by jumping as you will find early on with the Spiked Goomba. In these situations, hammer away!

If you want to switch Party Members, this option is under the red flag for strategizing. Once you have multiple Party Members, knowing their strengths and weaknesses will be key to having easier battles. Note that switching Party Members uses a turn, leaving you with one less attack or item to use.

When you are using upgraded abilities, you will expend Flower Points. You begin with five, but can improve this number up to a maximum value of 50. Abilities will range in how many FP they cost, and it is always recommended to enter boss battles with full HP and FP.

It is important to note that the entire party shares Mario’s HP, FP, Badge Points (BP), and Star Energy. This makes it a little more challenging. You should have little trouble facing multiple enemies with your Party Members next to you, especially if you make use of Action Commands.

Paper Mario Action Commands explained

A timing Action Control

After you reach the Shooting Star Summit and watch the ensuing events, Twink the Star Kid will present Mario with the Lucky Star, a present from Peach. This enables you to land Action Commands during battle.

At the simplest, Action Commands can add extra damage to your attack and mitigate damage received from enemies. There are three different types of Action Commands: timing, holding, and mashing.

Timing Action Commands require you to hit A just before an attack. On offense, this will result in Mario or a Party Member landing a consecutive attack. On defense, this blocks the attack, potentially nullifying the damage based on character levels. Some attacks are unblockable, and you may still take some damage when facing tougher foes though the damage will be lessened.

A holding Action Command

Holding Timing Actions require you to hold the left analog or analog stick on the controller until a threshold is hit, releasing the stick for a stronger attack. With Mario, this is the Action Command for using the Hammer, for example.

Mashing Action Commands require you to tap a button repeatedly to cause greater damage. It’s as simple as it sounds, so get your mash finger ready!

How to level up in Paper Mario

Menu showing current HP, FP, and BP, plus level progress in Star Points

In Paper Mario, experience is gained by defeating enemies through earning Star Points. When you amass 100 Star Points, you will gain a level. Each enemy will give you a variable number of Star Points, with mini-bosses and bosses rewarding you with a greater number.

With each level gained, the number of Star Points earned diminishes. If Mario’s level is equal to or greater than an enemy, then they will not reward you Star Points. If you come back to the early stages of the game after gaining some levels, the Goombas in the area will not reward you any Star Points because you are much too strong and they do not present a challenge.

With each level up, you are able to choose an upgrade between adding HP, FP, or BP. Early on, it is probably best to invest in HP and then once you have a Party Member or two and have gained a few a levels, invest in the other two. Investing in BP will allow you to equip more Badges while investing in FP will allow you to land more stronger abilities in battle.

The only real place to farm experience comes later in the game, but the enemies shouldn’t be so difficult that you have troubles making it through the game without needing to farm enemies.

Here are the max stats for Mario’s character:

  • Level: 27
  • HP: 50
  • Flower Points: 50
  • Badge Points: 30
  • Star Energy: 7 (one for each of the Seven Spirits)

Invest your level ups how you see fit with the above information. There are eight chapters in the game plus the prologue, so you should be able to max out your stats before finishing the game.

Why you need to collect Star Pieces

Merlow, the collector of Star Pieces

In Paper Mario, Star Pieces are a collectible item that play a crucial function: you trade them for Badges! While not all Badges will be traded with Star Pieces, many can only be obtained through trading Star Pieces.

Badges add certain effects, such as Chill Out preventing enemy First Strikes from landing, and thus can be critical to your success. Equipping Badges spends BP, so you will have to judge for yourself what Badges work best with your BP.

Star Pieces are littered throughout the overworld and sometimes hidden underground. They are yellow, diamond-shaped items that glitter on the screen. They resemble Revives from the Pokémon games. There are 130 Star Pieces in Paper Mario.

You can trade your Star Pieces on the second floor of Merluvlee’s Place by speaking to Merlow. It’s not a one-to-one trade as some Badges will require multiple, sometimes tens of Star Pieces to unlock. Some Badges have multiple forms – like Attack FX A through E – causing the total number of Badges to hit 80. The total amount of Star Pieces are the equivalent needed to unlock all of the Badges from Merlow.

The chalkboard in Mario’s house will keep track of how many of the 130 Star Pieces and 80 Badges you have unlocked. Check here for your progress reports.

Paper Mario looks to once again recapture another generation of gamers with its release on the Switch Online Expansion Pass. Use the above tips to help you enjoy the game and its fun, comical story. Now go save Princess Peach!

Paper mario: color splash review — Playing together

Wii U’s life cycle ended quickly — with a 99.9% chance Paper Mario: Color Splash will be the console’s last major exclusive. And there is some symbolism in the fact that Nintendo’s home console, gray in terms of popularity and library, ends with such a bright and beautiful game.

Islands of Blossom will last thirty to forty hours of colorful (in every sense) adventure.

Paper world

Those who value visuals above all else can throw caps in the air: you’ve got an amazing generator of beautiful screenshots for the Miiverse social network and, perhaps, the most stylish picture in the history of the platform. Only a few exclusives have passed me by, but neither Bayonetta 2, nor Super Mario 3D World, nor even Xenoblade Chronicles X create a constant desire to replenish the album of screenshots. Here, every landscape is a ready-made scene for wallpaper on your desktop. nine0003

Although the action takes place on an island, it is large enough to accommodate the rusty Wild West, tropical beaches in shades of yellow and blue, and dark purple caves with gloomy castles. And everything seems to be made of thin paper or thick multi-layered cardboard and even hand-painted. The paper world tells a story that is not a book story at all — rather, at the level of fairy tales-dioramas for the smallest.

On the island of Blossoming, someone is sucking paint out of the natives, and the magic stars that give this paint have been stolen. Mario, in company with assistant Vederkin, must find them, and at some point, Princess Peach as well. Original? Doubly not, because exactly the same structure was already in Paper Mario: Sticker Star — with the search for artifacts, a princess and a companion. Fortunately, the dialogues are no longer written for kids, they are translated into Russian and will make those who know the history of the series smile. nine0003

Scenes of island life

I started with dialogue as part of the gameplay for a reason. Because Color Splash is quite a bit of a platformer, only a role-playing game in some places, and most of all an adventure game. And let the global map be divided into levels, where sometimes you will have to jump and break bricks, and battles with opponents are conducted in turn-based mode and allow you to develop the abilities of a flat hero. But this is not the main thing.

The main thing is history. On the levels, Mario meets local residents — Toads. Basically, they are drawn in the same way and differ only in colors and individual elements of the costumes. This is a hack, because back in Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door twelve years ago, third-rate heroes looked different. Be that as it may, the population of Blossom is mired in problems, and it is up to the player to deal with them. The puzzles are simple and usually require you to talk to the right character or find an item that solves a riddle. nine0003

In addition to bright and cheerful places, there are dull and gloomy ones. But they can be colored!

But often simplicity, as the saying goes, turns into its bad side. For example, when it is not clear where the thing or character is located, which are key to promotion. So, already at one of the starting stages, you need to collect several items of clothing for a naked mushroom man. And if the shoes and pants hang in prominent places and contrast well with the background, then the thin leaf of the vest is barely noticeable — I spent thirty to forty minutes trying to find it. And without an outfit, you can’t pick up one of the paint stars and move to another location. And even at the already completed stage, someone may appear, allowing you to go further. nine0003

Review Paper Mario: Color Splash is an adventure!

But here’s how to find this Mr. Incognito — we’re not always told. For those who don’t want to run around looking for a needle in a haystack, the starting town of Tsvetomorsk has a toad in a cafe that gives clues, a feeble attempt to salvage the illogical plot lines. And while the scenes of island life themselves are well done, calling Color Splash a great representative of the adventure genre is a lie. nine0003

Appliqué lessons

Inconspicuous passages on the levels are also annoying. Want to jump to the star, but can’t get on a series of platforms? Yes, here is a narrow path between two hills! Or is the entrance to the cave blocked? In fact, you need to go inside the descending platform, which — how can you miss it! — there is no one wall. Both cases show that here we must look carefully and take our time.

Sometimes a navigation problem is solved more gracefully using the controller’s touch screen. In specially designated places, a piece of scenery can be cut out to guide Mario to the goal. The decision is funny, because these places must be sought. But usually a simple rule applies: if you don’t know where to go, look for an opportunity to cut. nine0003

Sometimes, instead of a plumber, a special item card is inserted into the outlying parts of the Blossom. Everything here is standard for adventure games: someone is stuck in the pipe — we insert a plunger, you need to drive away the boat that has run aground — we use a fan. And special cards are obtained from large and voluminous items that occasionally appear on the stages.

Twin Toads: laziness, haste or artistic device?

Hammer Guy

Other cards are more interesting. Those that are much more in the hero’s arsenal and are used in battle. From the very beginning, the plumber will receive a painting hammer, and over time, the arsenal will expand. Having met the enemy, we go into a turn-based mode, just like in a JRPG. A whole deck pops out on the bottom screen, where each card is responsible for its attack or the summoned partner. And any leaf can be painted, making the reception stronger. nine0003

The choice is wide, there is room for tactics (although it is not much needed in ordinary battles), but everything is implemented not very conveniently. You need to scroll the deck, confirm actions several times, use “swipe” — all for one or two attacks. The system inherited from Sticker Star, of course, justifies the presence of a second screen, but it makes little sense.

To make it even more interesting, from time to time the evil wizard Kamek intervenes in the matter, turning all Mario’s abilities into «Ragged Shoes», that is, the weakest jumping attacks, or even taking away ninety percent of the accumulated. Fortunately, the arsenal returns to its normal state immediately after the victory, and replenishing it at normal times is a breeze: cards drop directly from enemies and filled white spots. nine0003

Last drop of paint

Enemies that are still defeated leave behind coins, drops of paint and small cardboard hammers. With the first and second, everything is clear: money is spent on combat techniques, paint is needed to restore the island and strengthen attacks. But the hammers increase the supply of paint, even if they need to be collected fairly. There is no level system familiar to role-playing games here: health increases along with progress when you find key stars.

There are not many battles, you can escape from most of the kup and shy, there are almost no serious enemies at all — the role-playing component is clearly behind the adventure one. This is good for the general mood — if there were a little more RPG here, it would interfere with the leisurely pace. Plus, nothing distracts from the beautiful picture on the screen. nine0003

In combat, it is important to press the block or attack boost buttons in time.

A little more symbolism: the last big Wii U exclusive can be described with the same words as the console it was released on. Both the Color Splash and the outdated console seem to be made with high quality, but without much zest and, in addition, with a bunch of oddities and minor problems. As a result, neither one nor the other became great, they will not occupy the most important place on the fan shelf and they will no longer be able to attract new people to Nintendo products. Because they are intended for the nostalgic — those who still remember the adventure genre and are ready for a leisurely pace with role-playing splashes. nine0003

Pros: phenomenal graphics, stylized paper; funny situations and good humor; an interesting combination of adventure, role-playing game and platformer.

Cons: illogical construction of the plot and levels sometimes makes you not think, but just stray; the touch screen in combat is not very convenient.

I fly like paper, get high like planes

I was skeptical from the very beginning. Mario for me is a character with Dandy, a brave optimistic gentleman from Odyssey, as well as a little tactician and strategist, because Mario + Rabbids was on a discount. Didn’t think another Mario game could be interesting. It seemed to me that Paper Mario — like Disney’s MOBA — was a simple fanservice craft for a younger audience, which is only needed to make money from a famous name. Such an unpretentious quest with puzzles on the battlefield, pf. nine0003

The reviews didn’t interest me, only the lazy didn’t scold the combat system, only the wife insistently repeated: look what a beautiful game, let’s take it and try it, if you don’t like it, we’ll sell it. In this magical way, Paper Mario: The Origami King became the first game in the home library that was bought for the reason of «pretty».

During the passage of Paper Mario, I did not even think that I would write an opinion, I took screenshots only for the soul. And, yes, here they will let you swim on a boat and dive on a submarine. And shoot planes. Well, isn’t it a miracle? nine0003

As I write these lines, I laugh furiously at my not-so-distant self from the past. I went through the whole game, tried to close each zone 100%, gave it up once, but after the break I returned and was delighted. Now I’m seriously thinking that I should put aside some money and fill myself with Paper Mario somewhere. Just like a retro goon.

What do you know about the Toads?

Before Paper Mario, I thought Toads were annoying, nasty-screaming creatures that were only good for mass extermination. They have no personality, no free will, and an ugly head like an elephant man. Paper Mario: The Origami King, in addition to all its merits, first of all changed my impression of Toads — these are cute creatures that can be funny, daring, shy, lazy, and whatever else. It seems that Paper Mario is sponsored by a secret charity to support and whitewash the reputation of the Toads. Looking for them, “smoothing” them with a hammer and listening to phrases that range from hilarious to just witty is one of the most enjoyable and non-committal basics of the game. nine0003

Toad Lives Matter

The humor in the game is as pleasant and unobtrusive as possible. Paper Mario characters joke about Oscars speeches, office plankton, paper world conventions, past Mario games, The Legend of Zelda series, midlife crisis, horror, pop hits… the list goes on and on. for a long time. At the same time, the game does not slide into another Full House cruise along the Volga and can be serious when it comes to the problem of fathers and children, the conflict between the creator and creation, acceptance of loss and self-sacrifice (which, in the end, also becomes an occasion for jokes). All of this is reminiscent of an amazing novel in the best traditions of Terry Pratchett, when you have something to have fun at at 14 and shake your head thoughtfully at 34. nine0003

The game laughs at the player at some point. If you can’t remember the order of the platforms on which you need to jump over the river of lava to the other side, then on the third attempt the game will simply remove unnecessary platforms and leave only the correct ones. It’s especially funny in the sanctuary, which tests your wisdom: there is a question about a painting in one of the first locations, which I went through five weeks ago and don’t remember anything. If you can’t complete the sanctuary on normal difficulty, then you will be offered to make the task a little easier for gold coins. I agreed, paid, after which all the questions were in the spirit: “Does Mario have a brother? Not really». Of course, all this was accompanied by comments that it was somehow too easy. I ended up getting cyberbullied, exited, reloaded a previous save, and completed the Sanctuary of Wisdom on normal difficulty. nine0003

One of the best tracks I’ve ever heard in games. On par with «Push Play» from Firewatch.

To beat or not to beat?

I got bored with the fight quite quickly and was perceived as a dull routine. I was glad when you can run away from enemies or deftly smash with an ax. I didn’t want to return to the game, but every time I launched Paper Mario, it was sessions on weekends for 6-8 hours. While you’re playing, it’s hard to stop. Saturation comes the next day. Somewhere after unwinding the second tape, I became completely stuffy and unbearable that I abandoned the game for a month. nine0003

I was annoyed by these riddles, where in a short time you need to arrange enemies in a line or block 2 by 2, in order to later inflict death on them by jumping on their heads or lowering a hammer there. Therefore, I chose a different path — I donated to the toads, who solved riddles for me. As in real life, when you can pay employees instead of wallpapering, they will do everything. The style of my passage was determined by the market — I climbed with a hammer under every bush, fit into every adventure, covered every hole with confetti for shiny coins, so as not to worry about puzzles. nine0003

Indeed, Mario wearing Samus Aran’s papier-mâché helmet is not an ordinary sight

All of the above dismay does not apply to boss fights. The bosses here are cool, charismatic, crazy hysterical maniacs. If I were 12 years old, Hole Punch would be my role model in school. Although, in our attitude to pop music, Hole Punch and I are still similar (I love his indignation about how good songs are spoiled when they play from every iron — it’s like taking the best five seconds of a track, stuffing it into a car ad and throw the rest in the trash). nine0003

“Here it is in front of you a box of pencils. It is completely free to fit anything.” A couple of dozen kicks and cuffs fit especially well.

Bosses change the rules of the game, mock the battlefield, throw up new difficulties, but at the same time you always understand what needs to be done, where to attack and what is better not to touch. All my deaths in boss fights are due only to indiscretion and haste. You need to stop, think, and in moments of despair call on the toads to throw a heart and draw a route. nine0003

Deep, Deep Vibes

Music is the main shining diamond of the game. Sorry, Nintendo, I downloaded the soundtrack of this game, because some tracks sunk into my soul so much that I wake up with them, sing for half a day, and then praise my friends, and out of respect they answer “yes, yes, we will definitely listen” and twist thumb at the temple. Before this game, I hadn’t downloaded soundtracks for games for ten years and didn’t listen to them in such a way that I could sit right down and listen on repeat in isolation from the game. The furor of the same force last time made me work HEALTH for the third Max Payne. And after that, I heard more and more sound design in games, and less and less, in fact, music. nine0003

We need this kind of ballet!

The Origami King is filled with contrasts: from carefree Yeralash-style «Chestnut Valley» to symphonic metal for beginners «Vellumental Battle» with unrealistically epic brass, from atmospheric ambient, to the bewitching beauty of orientalism, to completely shameless disco. And then there’s country, a punk remix of Swan Lake, and a whole lot more.

After Nintendo games, I pay more attention to musical accompaniment. For example, I played Immortals Fenyx Rising and for ten hours I did not hear a single more or less sticky tune. At the same time, I can easily imagine that a decade later I will replay the game with great pleasure, in order, among other things, to listen to how the performance of the title melody in the town of Toads changes after each stripped tape — from a funny pipe in the spirit of Yoshi’s Crafted World at the beginning to a lush orchestral arrangements in the final. nine0003

The boys and I are molting on a vine away from the film adaptation of Uncharted.

Ending

It so happened that the game, from which I did not expect anything at all and had a cool attitude with prejudice, turned out to be a highlight of the year and, perhaps, became one of the most beloved games that I will remember with warmth and a smile in years to come. After it, I got hooked on Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, which repeats the fate of The Origami King — I abandoned it at the moment when you need to defeat the enemy only with perfect blows.
