Orcs are the embodiment of evil in many fantasy worlds, and in the hit game series Orcs Must Die!, they’re finally getting their comeuppance. Recently, the fourth installment in the franchise was released back in July, 2021, so fans have been waiting patiently for news about a fifth installment. Sadly, there has been no word from developer Robot Entertainment about when we can expect to see Orcs Must Die! 4. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate!
About Orcs Must Die! Series
Orcs Must Die! is a fun, engaging game with an interesting twist—the entire game view is from an action-oriented third-person perspective. This makes it easy to understand gameplay and make decisions without getting caught up in the map.
Orcs Must Die! was developed by Robot Entertainment, and was one of Penny Arcade Expo’s biggest surprises of 2011. In this innovative title, players control an armoured hero who must defend a series of magical gates from invading orcs, using a variety of weapons including traps and spells. It was originally released for Xbox Live Arcade on October 5, 2011 and for Windows PCs on October 12, 2011.
After the success of the first title in the franchise, Orcs Must Die! 2 was announced on April 2, 2012. The sequel includes two-player co-operative gameplay with the introduction of a new playable character: the Sorceress. Then as a third installment into the series, Orcs Must Die! Unchained, which was a beta version from 2014 and was eventually released in 2017, was developed under a free-to-play model.
Now the recent installment in the series, Orcs Must Die! 3 is another in a line of successful games from Robot Entertainment. The action-packed installment features a wide variety of save-or-die weapons and traps, each set in unique environments that force players on the defensive.

Ever since the release of Orcs Must Die! 3 back in July 2021 on Steam, fans have been patiently waiting for news about a fifth installment. There have been no official announcements about a release date, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating. Some believe that the game will be released sometime in 2020, while others think it might not come out until 2021 or even later. Only time will tell for sure, but one thing is certain: Orcs Must Die! 4 is one of the most highly anticipated releases in recent years.
Based on the previous game’s release patterns, we can guess that it’ll take somewhere around 3 years for a new Orcs Must Die 4! to be released. That is because, two weeks after the release of the first installment in the series, on July 30, 2012, just two weeks after the first game, the sequel, Orcs Must Die! 2 was released.
Up to now, the release pattern has been nearly four years long with a break in-between. After a brief hiatus, Orcs Must Die! Unchained was released in 2017 and Orcs Must Die! 3 is predicted to be out in 2021 — both have been fantastic additions to the series. This suggests that Orcs Must Die! 4 may arrive in 2025.

How to kill orcs? How to throw their hordes into the abyss with tons of strange weapons? Do you like tower defense strategy games? Then look no further than Orcs must die! 3, is developed and published by Robot Entertainment. Originally exclusive to the Google Stadia platform, the game has finally made its way to the Xbox console. This will be the second Orcs Must Die! a title to hit the platform as the second game never made it to consoles and the first was only released about 10 years ago (that title is also backwards compatible!). The third game develops the genre interaction mechanics of tower defense and third-person player control, and offers more gameplay modes such as weekly challenges, more campaign levels and playable characters.
If you’re unfamiliar with the tower defense style of play, think of it as a sort of headquarters to defend against enemies who want to destroy it. In this kind of game, you’ll use units or traps to protect your tower from waves of enemies, from simple goons who mindlessly walk up and die, to more advanced villains who require specific strategies to fight.
Orcs must die! follows these conventions, but instead allows players to have direct control through the playable character, with great freedom to play through many of the levels the game has to offer. Simply put, keep ugly green creatures away from your lawn.

Orc Smash!
Players will start with a few traps and only two playable characters out of a total of six. As you progress through the main campaign of the game, you will have the opportunity to unlock more traps, upgrade your current arsenal, and learn more about the types of enemies you will encounter in the more advanced stages of the game. Several war scenarios present in the game help to teach players how to control the crowd, which is very important if you are playing alone. These levels are really interesting because of the creative freedom the game offers with trap placement and the types of traps available, and are a great way to teach the player that spikes and arrow traps are just some about ways you can drown out a bunch of orc freaks.
You also need to aim well because enemies will fight back and players will need to keep moving if they want to maintain their momentum.
Orcs must die! 3 has a lot of charm thanks to its fairly simple art style and quirky character archetypes. Make no mistake, you most likely won’t remember the game’s narrative, which is more of a background detail given at the start of a level. But the cutscenes are well done, the voice acting is cartoonish and funny, and watching orcs flutter left and right never gets old. The visuals are nice to look at and they don’t create any visibility issues, which is very important for you to keep the orcs exactly where you want them to be blown to pieces or thrown off the map!

Special Abilities
Orcs Must Die! 3 offers several options for customizing the gameplay. Difficulty can be changed between the three levels on the level screen, giving players more time to set up defenses and slightly weakening enemies.
Sensitivity, field of view and controls can be easily changed in the options menu. Closed captioning is disabled by default, but only subtitles, script dialogs, and not all sound effects are present next to the player.
Closing Thoughts
During my time with the game, I didn’t find any bugs at all. The game maintained a smooth 60fps on the Xbox Series X regardless of the size of the orcs. I did find that the user interface was a bit unintuitive and not all that appealing. And while I felt the main campaign was a decent method for teaching players how to play, I really wish the training ground was smaller, allowing players to define the player character’s special abilities and weapons. The game is not difficult, and I was able to overcome any obstacles that I encountered. But I found that I didn’t really want to experiment with my combat weapons, simply because I didn’t know how effective they were in a given situation. My personal pain point is also the lack of split-screen co-op, meaning that a friend will also have to have their own copy on their console in order to play with you.
Single player is fun, but shaking orcs is more fun with friends.
Xbox fans will find the perfect home to strategically defeat the horde in the latest game in the series from Robot Entertainment. There are many maps, challenges and many ways to defend your tower from orcs. As far as the eye can see, there are no obvious flaws, and, anyway, I think that this is what Orcs Must Die does! 3 simple recommendation for a strategy fan. ∎
