FAQ

An open world game is one that sets aside the typical «beat the level and go on to the next» structure of video games. Instead, an open world game allows the player the freedom to explore a virtual world the way they want to without limits. While this term often gets presented as «do anything you want», it would be better to think of an open world game as allowing you to tackle the game’s objectives in any order you want and through whatever method you want.

Open world games typically do not have loading screens in between areas and usually let the player roam wherever they desire without «invisible walls» or other gating mechanics barring the player’s passage to certain areas.

In open world games you can often travel from one side of the map to the other and only be constrained by the actual geography of the world.

The «most» open world game is going to differ based on what you are looking for when you say, «most open world.» If you are strictly talking about the size of the open world, then something like «No Man’s Sky» (not a F2P game) could probably be considered one of the most open world games. EVE Online (which does offer a limited free access point) would also fit in this definition as both games offer galaxies of “open world” to explore.

If by the «most» open world you mean the most freedom to go wherever you want to go, then perhaps games like Minecraft or Rust are the options you are looking for in your open world experience.

There aren’t a ton of truly open world games in the free-to-play MMO game space, but games like EVE Online, Albion Online, and Planetside 2 offer some type of open world component to their gameplay.

Often you may see games advertised as open world (like Tower of Fantasy or Genshin Impact) and to a certain extent they are, but sometimes level gating is in use to keep players out of areas where the content may be harder than the player’s character level. You’ll also often see games in the free-to-play genre referred to as «sandbox» and this usually means the game has some type of «do whatever you want» component like open world games.

NCSoft Announces New Open World MMO Project LLL

By
Beratcan Ozkan

NCSoft has revealed its latest triple-A project.

NCSoft has revealed a brand-new IP, codenamed Project LLL, which will be an open-world multiplayer shooter inspired by Blade Runner and Total Recall.

The studio has also released an extended gameplay trailer, giving players an idea of what to expect from the game’s combat style, weapons, skills, and world. This announcement has come on the heels of a collaboration between Sony and NCSoft to create a Horizon MMORPG.

NCSoft revealed further information about Project LLL, via a blog post in which the project leader, Jaehyun Bae, shared a plethora of details regarding the game’s key features, development technologies, and inspiration. «We want to create different types of play and experiences in which players either work together or compete against each other by utilizing the two elements of ‘action’ that target and shoot at opponents and fractionalize and occupy ‘space’ within the environment» Bae shared.

RELATED: 10 Years On, Guild Wars 2 Is Still One Of The Best MMOs Around

He also went on to say that NCSoft aims to create a new genre that is completely different from ordinary battle royales by emphasizing uninterrupted combat and movement. Moreover, Project LLL will include a procedural creation method to «provide content that reacts appropriately to the player’s situation instead of playing preset content on repeat within the open world environment.» Project LLL will be built on Unreal Engine 5.

Project LLL is planned to be an open-world MMO shooter which extensively utilizes motion capture. As the development team states, the game adds a separate tension to the animations of characters and enemies to recreate the sense of hitting your target. Players will be able to explore a massive world filled with creatures, soldiers, and robots of war. The game takes place in Seoul, South Korea, and shows off an alternate history inspired by Total Recall, Blade Runner, and The Man in the High Castle.

As players might not expect from an MMO shooter game, each character has a background story explaining their motivation. According to NCSoft, storytelling is also going to be a key part of the game.

Top open world shooter games for PC

A selection of the best shooters in which you can go in any direction and find adventure on your head everywhere.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is once one of the most anticipated games, which immediately after the release in December 2020 received a huge portion of criticism due to many bugs, unplayability on consoles and poor optimization …

However, despite everything, the game itself is pretty good on its own. For starters, it’s worth noting that the action takes place in the fictional city of Night City, which is filled with various adventures and looks amazing. In addition, we highlight an interesting story, pleasant shooting and an excellent soundtrack.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Watch Dogs: Legion is the third installment in the popular Watch Dogs series and the direct sequel to Watch Dogs 2. It’s a third-person, open-world action-adventure set in a dystopian London.

The main task of Watch Dogs: Legion is to liberate the capital of England, occupied by an authoritarian regime that has taken control of the UK thanks to an advanced surveillance system known as ctOS.

It is worth noting that the game sets a new direction for the series, as it allows you to control several characters: the player is able to recruit absolutely any NPC into his squad! In addition, there is permanent death here: when a recruited character dies, he will be lost forever.

As for the game world, London is a reflection of the fictional history of Britain, and gamers will have to explore the city inside and out!

Mad Max

The Mad Max franchise is one of the best in the post-apocalyptic action movie genre. And Mad Max, released in 2015, is no exception: this is a solid shooter that combines all the best elements of this genre, namely an open world, bright explosions, furious fights and, of course, a lot of weapons.

Set in a post-apocalyptic desert, driver Max Rockatansky will have to fight for his life in a world full of chaos and violence.

Buy

State of Decay 2

State of Decay 2 is a direct sequel to one of the best survival horror games. The action takes place in the era of the zombie apocalypse in the south of the United States. The plot tells about a group of people who were able to survive during the disaster and united together.

The game is quite versatile: it is a survival simulator with an emphasis on resource management and settlement organization. Thus, gamers will have to create a community in a post-apocalyptic environment and look for survivors in their team, go in search of resources, and build a base.

The main difference between the second part and the first one is the cooperative mode, which State of Decay really lacked. So you can play the game with your friends!

Buy Now

Days Gone

Days Gone is an open-world survival-horror game famous for its incredibly long history: the developers did their best and revealed the characters’ characters (both the main character and the secondary ones) in the most detailed way.

Days Gone is something of a mixture of the post-apocalyptic atmosphere of The Last of Us and the rich open world of Far Cry 5.

The game is addictive, if only because the plot is quite relevant today: the action takes place 2 years after the global pandemic that occurred, which destroyed almost all of humanity, turning part of the population into «freaks». The main task? Survive!

Note that Days Gone just recently came out on PC and is now available for purchase on Steam and the Epic Game Store.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is an action-RPG in which players have to explore a group of planets located in a star system somewhere on the edge of the galaxy. The project is similar to several popular games at once: Fallout: New Vegas, Mass Effect, BioShock, but it boasts originality, excellent setting, funny jokes and atmosphere.

One of the main elements of the game is allies. They are very important for the plot, because you have to build relationships with them, both friendly and not so.

Buy

Grand Theft Auto V

You must have guessed the first game on this list. Yes, we are talking about the GTA series — perhaps the best representative of open world shooters. Each part of it is good in its own way: for example, San Andreas offers as many as three cities to explore, and GTA IV is amazing about the life of Eastern European immigrants in the USA.

We would like to single out GTA V — a well-designed, huge, beautiful game that, even years after its release, remains in the top sellers thanks to the multiplayer full of various possibilities.

Buy Now

Far Cry 5

The first release of the Far Cry line hit the players in its time — back in 2004, it was hard to believe that it was possible to release a shooter with such a large-scale open world. After the first part, the series passed from Crytek to Ubisoft and, I must say, the new owner not only did not spoil it, but made it even better, expanding the concept of a free to explore world more and more with each game.

As a result, the evolution of the series led to Far Cry 5 — a game that has everything: co-op, vehicles, lots of secrets and easter eggs, a fun story, and a free approach to completing missions. However, this does not mean that the previous parts are worse — you will probably like Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4, and spin-offs for these games.

Buy Now

Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 is the sixth installment in Ubisoft’s legendary franchise. This time, players will find themselves in the heart of the Caribbean — on the tropical island of Yara, ruled by a dictator who has brought the state to a critical state. As the developers themselves point out, «tens of years of economic sanctions have ruined the people, split them and reduced them to poverty.»

The creators were inspired by the times of the revolution in Cuba: they even went to the country to meet with the locals, explore the cultural diversity, and also talked to the real guerrillas who fought at that time.

In the sixth part of the series, the guys from Ubisoft took into account the mistakes of the previous game, and did not make the main character mute: he is fully voiced and will actively participate in the dialogues. In addition, players can choose the gender of the character.

Buy

Ghost Recon: Wildlands

In this co-op tactical shooter, you and your friends take on the role of operatives fighting against a dangerous drug cartel that has taken over all of Bolivia. Here, the developers from Ubisoft tried to recreate a huge world with a lot of points of interest, missions and outposts, and to make it more interesting to explore, they added more than 60 different vehicles, including helicopters and boats.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands will delight you with well-designed gameplay, sharpened for teamwork. You can enlist the support of computer partners, but any AI will be helpless in front of the well-coordinated work of the players. And if you want to challenge yourself, then PvP modes will allow you to test your skills in battles with live opponents.

Buy

Fallout 4

If the first parts of Fallout were made in the CRPG genre, then by the fourth part the series has almost completely transformed into a shooter — now everything is decided not so much by the characteristics and skills of the character, but by the accuracy and speed of the player’s reaction. Whether this is good or bad is not for us to judge.

However, as an open world shooter, Fallout 4 is a lot of fun to play. America scorched by atomic bombs is replete with mutants and raiders of all stripes, abandoned factories and rickety huts hide many secrets and dangers, and a huge selection of weapons (with its customization) leaves room for experimentation. You can also download older Fallout 3 and New Vegas games, which may be a little dated, but they have their own unique charm that will surely appeal to fans of the post-apocalypse.

Buy Now

Borderlands

Borderlands is a great choice for fans of co-op entertainment and the so-called looter shooters, where players are not so much exploring the story as they are hunting for more and more cool things. The developers took the loot system straight from Diablo and transferred it to the shooter genre, seasoning it all with an open world, charismatic heroes and dark humor.

In the Borderlands games, you and your friends have to explore a distant planet in search of semi-mythical treasures. Well, the local fauna and crazy raiders will make this trip more fun.

Buy now

Prey

Restarting the franchise Prey is an immersive space/alien sim that has you exploring a huge space station, leveling up your skills and fighting monsters.

The game will delight you with an intricate story and a wealth of gameplay mechanics, and the open world, although very compact, will impress with a huge number of hidden passages, secret rooms and carefully hidden secrets.

Buy

Red Dead Redemption 2

The best western of this generation, a huge game where the story campaign alone takes about 40 hours, and in multiplayer you can spend whole months.

The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is full of events, not only in story and side quests, but also in random encounters, collectibles, objects to hunt, escaped criminals, caches of gold and much more. The best way to spend a long weekend immersed in an incredibly atmospheric game.

Buy

Saints Row IV

The Saints Row action parody series offers incredible adventures that are definitely not in GTA or any other open world game. Crazy chases and exciting shootouts from other shooters are nothing compared to the opportunity to gain superpowers and knock on the horns of Satan himself.

If we choose the best game of the line, then we would prefer Saints Row IV: in this part, the degree of insanity reached its maximum, and players got a lot of gameplay features, including flying, super attacks and a dubstep gun.

Buy Now

Mafia III

The open world was also implemented in the first two parts of the Mafia series, but was present in them only nominally: outside of the missions, you could only drive around the city, collect vintage cars and enjoy the scenery.

In the third installment, players got more freedom of action: although New Bordeaux is not rich in content like GTA, nevertheless, you can find a lot of interesting activities in the city, such as racing competitions and collectibles. This will help you have fun in between monotonous missions.

Buy Now

Tom Clancy’s The Division

New York, hit by the epidemic, looks frighteningly realistic in The Division: abandoned cars, smashed shops, corpses lying on the streets, looters and bandits who have declared the city their territory. This MMORPG shooter will show you the dark side of human nature.

The Division is equally interesting to explore alone or with friends. And when the snowy streets of New York get bored, check out the blooming Washington DC in the sequel to The Division 2.

The Division The Division 2

Just Cause 3

Each game in the Just Cause series consistently ranks among the top open-world shooters on PC and beats previous titles in terms of scale. Perhaps no competitor of this franchise can boast of such large locations. Another thing is how these locations are worked out.

Why did we take the third part of the line and not the newer fourth? Because it is brighter, more cheerful and of high quality. Alas, the weather system that debuted in Just Cause 4 didn’t make up for the boring missions and inappropriately serious story. Therefore, instead of South America, it is better to go to the sunny Mediterranean.

Buy now

Fallout 76

This Fallout entry deserves its own place on the list due to its MMO focus: Fallout 76 was the first online open-world shooter in the series. The game feels both familiar and new at the same time: you, in the 1st person mode, explore the post-apocalyptic world, only now in it, besides you, robots and mutants, there are other players with whom you can cooperate or fight.

As with Cyberpunk 2077, the release of Fallout 76 did not go as smoothly as we would like. Nevertheless, the game takes the atmosphere and gameplay, and the developers are diligently fixing bugs and preparing new content.

Buy Now

Homefront: The Revolution

The Homefront dilogy captivates with at least an interesting setting: where else will you see the story of how North Korea rises to power and invades the United States weakened by the crisis? Actually, both parts of the series offer to throw off the occupation and return the United States to its former glory.

If the first game was extremely linear, the sequel already offers an open world with its usual features like division into districts, towers, additional tasks and collectibles. This is not to say that The Revolution turned out to be a masterpiece game, but it deserves to be called at least a good one.

DayZ

Explore the post-Soviet country of Chernarus, which has been hit by a zombie apocalypse, in this survival game. You, in the role of one of the few survivors, are trying to get hold of a livelihood and not fall prey to the carnivorous dead.

What might DayZ be interested in? First of all, hardcore gameplay, detailed crafting and building system. The developers have implemented a huge number of gameplay mechanics (and even more bugs), ranging from hunting to simulating contagious diseases. But the most interesting thing in the game is the constant generation of interesting situations that the players themselves create. Each new trip to Chernarus will be different from the previous ones, so get ready to be surprised.

Buy

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

Well, technically, in S.T.A.L.K. E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl is implemented, rather, a semi-open world — several large-scale locations connected to each other by transitions, during which the player admires the loading screen. But each of these locations can be explored for hours, finding new caches, artifacts and, of course, adventures on your Kalash.

We would recommend not limiting yourself to Shadow of Chernobyl only: of course, both Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat are worthy of attention. In the meantime, GSC Game World is slowly engaged in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, you can continue to explore the Zone in numerous Stalker fan mods.

Buy Now

Anthem

BioWare’s release turned out to be imperfect — uneven, poorly glued in places, and sometimes leading to frustration: even the final version of the game crashed and randomly rebooted the consoles.

Nevertheless, one can’t help but praise Anthem: although it’s not the best project of the developers, it’s still a good game that can give a pleasant experience. Flights in javelins are breathtaking, skirmishes, especially at the highest difficulty levels, are captivating with their depth, and end-game content allows the MMO shooter to fully reveal itself. And there is also an incredibly beautiful (thanks to the Frostbite engine) open world that can be explored in “free” mode.

Buy

Rage 2

The fruit of the collaboration between id Software and Avalanche Studios turned out to be ambiguous: an open world and furious firefights are combined here with a short story and controversial visual design.

Nevertheless, you can get a positive experience from the game: the dynamism of battles rolls over, the weapons feel powerful and shoot juicy, and the atmosphere of a crazy world complements the active gameplay. If you want to turn off your mind and just shoot at targets, Rage 2 is the perfect fit.

Buy

Arma 3

Arma 3 is a game for those who love realism and hardcore. The Czechs from Bohemia Interactive implemented authentic gameplay, added a huge arsenal of weapons and military equipment, released several multiplayer modes — and sent gamers to have fun in the sandbox.

In this shooter you will find several hundred square kilometers of a detailed world where you can do whatever you want: complete story missions, fight online, create your own content in the Workshop. This is a project that will give you an idea of what modern warfare looks like.

Buy

Crysis

The first part of the Crysis series was released back in 2007, but is still on the buzz. This big-budget action movie once brought top PCs to their knees, demonstrating the full power of the platform for which it was created. Even now, many games are very far from the capabilities of Crysis — for example, in terms of destructible environments.

Subsequent sequels were good, high quality, but did not become as iconic as the original game. If you have already played enough of the shooter, then pay attention to the remaster, which was released in September 2020 on PC and consoles.

Buy

ARK: Survival Evolved

In ARK: Survival Evolved you can build houses and craft weapons, cooperate with other players and arrange large-scale shootouts, fly pterodactyls and ride a Tirex. The game is full of possibilities and you will surely find a lot of interesting content in it.

Destiny 2

In the first Destiny, the open world is boring and empty, which is critical for a game that the developers proudly call a mixture of MMO and shooter. In the sequel, the situation was corrected — now gamers can not only move freely across a vast territory, but also accidentally find secrets, complete lengthy optional missions, stumble upon a strong boss in a cave and enjoy the beauty of fantastic landscapes.

Moreover, the game is devoid of quests in the style of «bring it, give it» and is filled with really interesting and original stories that are worth experiencing together with friends in a cooperative passage. And the best part is Destiny 2 in 2019became free.

Deadside

A multiplayer survival shooter where the developers have groped the line between intense gunfights and hardcore mechanics. Moreover, you will have to fight for life in a post-apocalyptic world without fantastic elements — there are no anomalies, zombies, mutants and other inventions. Just harsh nature and frustrating human nature.

The open world is represented by an abandoned area of 225 square kilometers — familiar roads, deserted villages, lonely houses and endless forests await you. Boring? Anything can happen in the adventure, from encounters with other survivors to skirmishes with gangs of cannibals.

Will to Live Online

Another project that offers to survive in a harsh post-apocalyptic world, but the authors of this game were clearly looking towards the Stalker — therefore, there is a high risk of dying from an invisible anomaly, meeting a mutated animal and stumbling into a trap bandits looking for easy money. And at the same time, do not forget about hunger and thirst.

Despite the hardcore nature, exploring open spaces is quite interesting — in addition to the surface, cave networks, mines and various dungeons are available for exploration, and the world has a well-thought-out story that the surviving NPCs will share with you.

Into the Radius VR

Into the Radius VR is a Stalker in VR. Everything is the same — anomalies, an abandoned city due to a disaster, a feeling of loneliness, artifacts and other components, but now all this will have to be experienced in virtual reality. This imposes its own characteristics — for example, the weapon will have to be cleaned, each item should be placed in a backpack. You can even take a cigarette out of the pack, after opening it, and play chords on the guitar. The mechanics are worked out and will give an unforgettable experience.

There is an open world, but not to say that it is «alive» — unfortunately, you are the only survivor, and you will not meet a single soul. But Into the Radius VR takes the atmosphere, interactivity and post-apocalyptic beauty.

The action takes place in an alternative Soviet Union, where the country has achieved particular success in the production of biorobots. As for the game world, it is represented by several biomes, interconnected by a railroad. The developers also promised locations “throughout the entire territory of the USSR”, spacious open areas on the surface and intricate underground complexes.

Atomic Heart will also include RPG elements: you can create and upgrade weapons, of which there are a lot in the game! In general, Atomic Heart is in many ways reminiscent of Bioshock, but in a Soviet setting.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise has long become a cult in the post-Soviet space: many users still play Call of Pripyat, Clear Sky and Shadow of Chernobyl. The special popularity of the series is confirmed by the huge amount of content created based on the games: this includes various modifications, and role-playing games, and much, much more.

The news about the active development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 came as a complete surprise to fans: the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World announced the release of the game in 2018. It is expected that the project will combine elements of a shooter, survival horror, immersive sim, and, of course, offer a vast open world.

top MMORPG shooters with free action

The open world is the greatest achievement of the gaming industry. After close and closed locations, this approach has become a real revelation for the players. Today, many games of different genres use this feature, unfortunately, often neglecting other aspects of the game. As a result, the world around them turns out to be large, but lifeless, the gameplay is boring, and the plot is mediocre.

In contrast to them, there are many projects in which an open world and an exciting gameplay form a single whole, thus creating the core of their own success. Mixed, the games of both categories form a motley substance. Sorting through such an abundance, filtering the quality open-world shooters that will be discussed in this section from third-rate fakes, is quite difficult.

Luckily, there is our database of only the top open world shooters on PC. It is here that you can find the most worthy online open-world shooters, as well as the best representatives of the genre with a single mode, given in a separate list below.

A bit of history

One of the first large-scale open worlds to use MMORPGs, followed by MMO shooters. Of course, there have been attempts to bring seamless, spacious maps to video games before. For example, the Elite space simulator, released at 1984 is traditionally considered the very first open world game. And some consider the 1976 text quest Colossal Cave Adventure to be the pioneer of open-world games. But still, in fairness, it is worth noting that these were rather large locations with rather poor content, low interactivity and more than modest graphic design.

Really big, beautiful and open virtual universes have been given to players by massively multiplayer games such as EverQuest, World of Warcraft and Guild Wars. Almost simultaneously with them, open worlds (cities, islands) began to appear in shooters and action games: S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Far Cry, GTA 3. It was these projects that popularized the trend towards placing global open three-dimensional locations with a high degree of interactivity, showing that this is not only technically possible but also commercially viable.

Today, there are dozens of open-world games of various genres, including the particularly popular MMORPG shooters, many of which can be downloaded completely free of charge and sometimes run right in your browser window.

The development of the plot in The Outer Worlds is non-linear, it is influenced by certain game actions, for example, replicas chosen during dialogues.

16. The Ascent

Isometric shooter in a cyberpunk setting. The game characters are a combat vehicle, the private property of a mega-corporation, which, after the liquidation of its owner, goes into independent life. Excellent modern graphics, a lot of game items (primarily interesting high-tech weapons) and support for a cooperative mode for playing with friends and random comrades. The similarity with Gears of War in the game is not accidental, since the People Can Fly studio, known to many for the brutal FPS Bulletstorm and Painkiller, also worked on GoW for some time. Like other projects of the studio, OUTRIDERS is also distinguished by its meaty gameplay, but here there are also role-playing elements successfully integrated into the gameplay.

18. Crysis 3

One of the most beautiful shooters on the PC, dedicated to futuristic battles against aliens and mercenaries of the mega-corporation CELL. The plot in Crysis 3 is quite interesting, but the process of battles with various opponents, accompanied by the use of unusual types of weapons and devices, such as a combat nanosuit, in which the main character is dressed, causes the greatest delight. All the action takes place on a large open map, which is nothing more than a post-apocalyptic New York of the near future.

19. Deadside

Multiplayer action game with an element of survival. The entourage of Deadside is based on the domestic post-apocalypse so beloved by many players in the spirit of Stalker, but only more realistic — there are no mutants, zombies, anomalies and other miracles here. The game itself is quite hardcore in terms of combat and simulated survival of the main character. There is a large selection of weapons and other game items. The map in Deadside is huge and varied, with many objects to explore. At the moment, the game is actively developing, every week being filled with new content and gaming features.

20. RAGE 2

Continuation of a good post-apocalyptic shooter from id Software, which has become even more diverse and interesting. The game has got nice modern graphics and a huge sandbox open world. There is a variety of main and side tasks, research points and other game activities. The variety of enemies and weapons is impressive. In addition to walking around the rather large world of RAGE 2, various types of post-apocalyptic vehicles are also available here, including all sorts of armored vehicles and buggies with stationary heavy machine guns and automatic cannons. There are also various drones, motorcycles and even jetpacks. In general, everything is in order to drag players into the dangerous and exciting world of shooting wastelands for a long time.

21. Anthem

The game of 2019 from BioWare, which, contrary to the expectations of many, turned out to be not just another deeply developed single-player RPG, but a very peppy action game with a fantastic setting. The emphasis in Anthem is placed on a cooperative session passage, during which players are thrown into an open world with different biomes, bizarre terrain, amazing flora and fauna. The game world is filled with many dangers, so staying outside the protective walls of the local hub city requires the use of special combat suits — javelins. Each such suit not only protects the fragile human shell of its wearer, but also gives it various abilities, for example, it allows you to fly, launch portable missiles, and so on.

22. The Cycle: Frontier

Fantastic loot shooter of 2022, completely free and incredibly beautiful. The open world of The Cycle: Frontier corresponds to the canons of old military fiction — a distant and unexplored (or rather, abandoned for a very long time) planet, full of all sorts of dangers. Destructive storms, poisonous plants, aggressive species of life, ruthless treasure hunters — this is the list of what awaits players in the local world. At the same time, the surface and bowels of the planet hide many valuables. For example, rare resources and lost high-tech artifacts. 23. DayZ

24. Halo Infinite

The new part of the world famous blockbuster, which is one of the leaders among all sci-fi shooters on PC (and not only). The competitive part of Halo Infinite is available for free, but the story campaign, which can be played alone and in co-op, will have to be bought. As in previous games in the series, in Halo Infinite the plot is endowed with a grandiose epicness of almost universal scale, and the theater of its action is the world-ring of colossal proportions. Connoisseurs of peppy sci-fi action movies with an open world will definitely not be disappointed.

25. Squad

Serious tactical shooters with a modern war theme also include open-world games. One of the best representatives of this trend is a realistic FPS called Squad. This is a multiplayer game, the open world of which can accommodate up to a hundred players, as well as an abundance of real military equipment (tanks, armored personnel carriers, wheeled air defense systems, and so on) and fortifications. By the way, fortifications in Squad often have to be built on their own, using special equipment for this — most often an ordinary sapper shovel. In addition, fans of realistic skirmishes in Squad are attracted by the abundance of light and small arms, various body kits for them, controlled military equipment and the ability to customize any of almost a hundred different classes for their virtual fighter.

26. Arma Reforger

Serious tactical shooters with a wide variety of vehicles and an open world, also called combined arms simulators, do not end with Squad. Their list continues with Arma Reforger, the 2022 game from Bohemia Interactive, which develops the line of serious military simulators Arma, recognized by many connoisseurs of the genre as one of the best in its segment. Arma Reforger uses the entourage of the Cold War of the fifties and sixties of the last century, and the arena for hostilities is a huge island in the Atlantic Ocean, whose area is fifty square kilometers.

27. Volcanoids

A first-person survival shooter that takes players to a mysterious volcanic island. The island is open to exploration from the very start, and you can explore it on foot with a first-person view, or by driving such an unusual mode of transport as a giant drilling machine. It also serves as the main base of the player, where he can rest, replenish supplies and build some useful item from the collected materials. By the way, the game has a strong influence of cyberpunk, so fans of this stylistic direction should in no case let Volcanoids pass by.

28. Control

The open world in this third-person shooter is quite unusual — it is a solid-sized office complex, which is the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control. The same as the FBI, but is investigating incidents of a paranormal nature. According to the plot, the entire complex is captured by hostile entities, astral dimensions open in it, in general, the scene turns out to be very interesting for research.

29. POSTAL 4: No Regerts

The return of the satirical series of shooters about the adventures of a crazy dude. After the failure of the third game, the developers from Running With Scissors were not afraid to take on the POSTAL series again, ignoring the previous part and continuing the plot events of POSTAL 2. The new game has a completely open world in the form of a large city and its environs, located somewhere in the central part of the Arizona desert. The main character can be customized, he can use different vehicles and control packs of dogs, climb high walls with a chain and a hook, and experiment with interactive environments, coming up with new unusual ways to kill virtual dummies.

30. Serious Sam 4

An ultra-fast and crazy brutal shooter that puts fun above all else. And it is expressed in the form of skirmishes with hundreds of different monsters trying to crush the hero with a crowd. And if earlier the hero was saved by spacious locations and a lot of unusual guns, now he has at his disposal a completely open world, and the arsenal of weapons has almost doubled compared to the previous parts. Enhances the pleasant impression is not the worst plot for a shooter, the script of which competently alternates between comical and dramatic moments.

31. Will To Live Online

Fans of the domestic post-apocalypse and the Stalker series are probably aware of the existence of a good game called Will To Live Online. For everyone else, let’s explain — Will To Live Online is an open-world MMOFPS / MMORPG endowed with all the characteristic attributes of a gloomy post-apocalypse. There are numerous mutants and dangerous anomalies, insidious radiation and other survivors, divided into factions or hanging around without getting alone. The gameplay of Will To Live Online consists of exploring an interesting world and completing quests, hunting for swag and mutants, as well as fighting other players.

32. SCUM

The SCUM project continues the theme of interesting survival shooters. A game in which gamers play the role of prisoners thrown onto an abandoned island with zombies as participants in a cruel reality show. Features of the game include a well-developed system of states of game characters, which determines their combat potential and chances of survival. Also, the characters can be customized in every possible way, which is also presented by the developers as an important advantage of SCUM.

33. Stay Out

The game, previously proudly called Stalker Online. But with its transfer to Steam, the developers from Mobile Technologies decided to change the name. Stay Out is a free-to-play MMOFPS dedicated to stalking. Players, alone or in small groups, can explore the vast anomalous zone, visiting many man-made and natural objects. The atmosphere of the world is conveyed very well, it is interesting to communicate with other players, join clans and small temporary units to complete tasks. True, there is too much grind in the Stay Out game, which will not appeal to all gamers. 9Fallout: New Vegas The game, released as a standalone add-on for Fallout 3, turned out to be much better than the original in the opinion of many players. Fallout: New Vegas takes place in a distant post-apocalyptic future, on the territory of North America destroyed by a nuclear war. The protagonist is a courier heading to one of the slightly re-delayed cities, who is attacked by robbers along the way, taking away a valuable package. This moment becomes the starting point of an incredible adventure with non-linear development and many surprises.

35. Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem

A game based on the popular Serious Sam franchise set in Russian Siberia. Introduced in Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem, the battlefield spans a vast region that includes dense forests, an arctic coastline, numerous villages, and an entire ghost town. 36. Just Cause 4

A real interactive action game with a lot of explosions, chases, flights and endless skirmishes. The player gets the opportunity to stage a miniature war in an open digital world, using incredible weapons, as well as a bunch of driving and flying vehicles. This part of the gameplay is a feature of every game in the Just Cause series, but the developers were able to bring something new to the fourth part. So, in Just Cause 4, not just a dynamic change of weather appeared, but a whole set of destructive climatic phenomena, including tornadoes, storm curtains and others. Moreover, they can both help the hero in the destruction of enemy infrastructure, and vice versa, frustrate his plans.

37. Super People

A battle royale game, which, as you know, is impossible without a large open world with many different objects. Super People amazes with its great graphics and environment design, incredibly picturesque and photorealistic. But these are not all the advantages of Super People. One of the features of the game is the unique classes of super soldiers. There are twelve super soldiers in total, and the process of playing for each of them is quite different due to the presence of each set of their own active abilities and other characteristic features. Abilities are not unlocked immediately — they become available during the match with each level earned by the character.

38. Fallout 76

Another game from the Fallout franchise on the list. This time we are talking about the multiplayer survival Fallout 76 with a huge post-apocalyptic world, the exploration of which is the key moment of the entire gameplay. Many probably remember that at the start of Fallout 76 it turned out to be very “raw”: an incredible number of flaws and frank miscalculations, the presence of bugs and unbalanced mechanics that did not work as planned. But through numerous patches and updates, the developers were able to bring Fallout 76 to mind, as a result of which it became a very interesting open-world game.

39. Eternal Evil

A game for connoisseurs of dark gothic aesthetics blended into a modern environment. The action takes place in a small modern town, which was chosen as a nesting place for bloodsucking ghouls. 40. KeepUp Survival

KeepUp Survival throws players on a desert island with a harsh wild, but very picturesque nature. The task of the players is to survive in an unfamiliar place full of secrets and dangers, united in a squad or acting independently. Shooting, collecting materials, crafting, survival, exploration of all nooks and crannies, a seamless open island — all this makes KeepUp Survival the right to be on our list of top open world shooters.

41. Hurtworld

Hardcore survival shooter. One of the earliest games on this subject, in 2019, finally released from early access. The game was developed by the indie studio Bankroll Studios, for which Hurtworld was the first and only game at the moment. Surprisingly, the guys completely coped with the tasks set for themselves, creating a really interesting game. There is an open world here, it is decorated in specific low-poly graphics, but it still seems very nice. Survival elements are represented by the need to eat, warm yourself by the fire, defend yourself from hostile creatures and other players — after all, the principle of free PvP works in Hurtworld.

42. Generation Zero

Post-apocalyptic open-world shooter with bizarre robots as enemies. One day they just appeared, as if from nowhere, and the people living a peaceful life, on the contrary, disappeared somewhere. The post-apocalypse in Generation Zero is very unusual — the invasion of robots and the disappearance of people takes place in an alternative version of Sweden in the eighties. Signs of desolation do not cause alarm here, robots, although they require caution, are also perceived quite calmly, especially considering that Generation Zero has a stealth system and, with due care, their attention can be avoided. And the picturesque Scandinavian nature around gives a certain feeling of relaxation and peace.

43. The Signal from Tolva

Shooter without a story, but with a great sci-fi open world. All playable and non-playable characters in The Signal from Tolva are combat robots that fight each other and at the same time look for artifacts and other valuable items on the global map. You can equip your robot with new types of weapons, the choice of which in The Signal from Tolva is not very wide. The battles themselves turned out to be leisurely and enjoyable, there is a certain meditativeness in this process, which is very unusual for a shooter.

44. Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts

For a long time, the games from the Sniper Ghost Warrior series from the Polish studio CI Games failed to fully reveal their potential and completely immerse the player in the image of a sniper. And still they, along with Sniper Elite, remained and remain the best sniper shooters. The appearance of Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts was able to swing the bowl towards serious positive changes, giving players an almost perfect sniper game, which, among other things, also has a well-designed semi-open world.

45. Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is even more realistic and challenging than its predecessor. You often have to shoot from very long distances, but if you wish, you can get around this difficulty — the gameplay of Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 involves non-linearity in the choice of means of eliminating targets.
