The Rift S isn’t a huge upgrade over the original Rift, but it brings Oculus’ desktop VR into the modern era. Its built-in tracking works well, and the displays look much better than before.

Hello, I bought an Oculus Rift S — Hardware on DTF

The article is written for those who still have questions about buying a virtual reality helmet and about the experience of using

A long time ago, having taken a friend to drive PSVR, I was finally able to personally appreciate what the charm of VR is (before that I tried another helmet, but not for long). Having gone through all the significant releases, I was satisfied with the technology and games, but not with the helmet itself, which has a lot of problems, ranging from a soapy picture (on the base PS4) to poor tracking. Of the alternatives, there were only helmets on the PC, but they were all quite expensive, so I started thinking about buying a PSVR, but over time I gave up, because. There weren’t particularly interesting new games, the rest passed, and nextgen is on the nose with the possible announcement of a new helmet. nine0005

And after the announcement of Alyx, I, like many others, again looked towards virtual reality. And, as it turned out, there was a mini-revolution — Oculus introduced new helmets with motion tracking using helmet cameras, introducing a line of rather cheap models (compared to what is on the market) — Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S. I started them systematically study, watch videos, read reviews and eventually I came to 3 models — Quest, Rift S and Odyssey + from Samsung.

For myself, I singled out according to the information that I found these pros / cons:

    Oculus Quest:

    • + Portable and although the games in this form are presented in the worst quality and there is no SteamVR support, it is a pleasure to play the same Beat Saber wirelessly for many.
    • + There is an Oculus Link — a USB 3. 0 cable that allows you to connect the Quest to a PC and practically turn it into a Rift S. True, the technology is still raw, there is an input lag and the edges of the image are usually transmitted in the worst quality (many people will not notice them). nine0021
    • + OLED screens, the ability to change the IPD (interpupillary distance).
    • + Well, actually portability, you can safely fold the helmet and go on a visit with him.
    • — The helmet is held only by straps, there is no HALO holder, like on PSVR for example. Due to a decent weight (because it’s not just a helmet, but a helmet with a mobile PC inside) it can rub or simply create inconvenience.
    • — Helmet costs the same as Rift S(39$9), but to play in SteamVR, you still need to buy an Oculus Link (about $79), which is still very hard to get. You can use other USB3.0 cables, but there are problems with them.
    • — 72 Hz.
    • — Built-in headphones of rather poor quality (but it is possible to connect any other headphones via 3.5mm).

    Oculus Rift S:

    • + HALO-Strap, otherwise the same package as the Quest, plus a cable of course (good length, about 4.5 m). nine0021
    • + 5 cameras, unlike Quest’s 4, which makes tracking from above better (when, for example, you get something behind your back).
    • + For $399 you get a complete set, you don’t need to buy anything else, only if you have batteries for controllers (batteries are included).
    • — LCD screens, because of which the picture quality is not as good as Quest or Odyssey +.
    • — 80 Hz.
    • nine0020 — The built-in headset is as bad as the Quest.

    • — For some, it may turn out to be a minus that the helmet does not have HDMI, but DisplayPort, which is why not all laptops can be connected to a helmet.

    Samsung HMD Odyssey+:

    • + The best image resolution among the candidates, coupled with AMOLED screens.
    • + Although its standard price is $499, it is often on sale for $230, which makes it a very attractive purchase. nine0021
    • + HALO-Strap, plus built-in headset rated as excellent by many.
    • + Samsung’s Screen Door Effect technology, due to which pixels are practically invisible, makes the immersion much stronger, though at the same time it blurs the picture.
    • + 90 Hz, also not ideal, but better than other candidates.
    • — Windows Mixed Reality, which Microsoft almost killed and which is supported for the most part only by SteamVR with its updates. nine0021
    • — Only 2 cameras, which can cause problems with tracking.
    • — Despite the fact that this is the best image, there is such a thing as Sweet Spot — this is the area in the lenses where the image is seen best and does not turn into soap. The Rift S, for example, has a rather massive Sweet Spot, which is why you can safely look in a helmet in different directions and read the text around the edges without any problems. At Samsung, many complain that for a clear picture, you almost always need to look straight ahead, otherwise everything will be smeared. nine0021

Having estimated all the pluses and minuses, looking again at a lot of reviews and opinions, I remembered what exactly I was not satisfied with PSVR — a soapy picture and bad tracking. Therefore, the helmet from Samsung immediately disappeared as a choice for me, only the Quest and Rift S remained.

Quest looks like a very attractive purchase, with a better screen, with portability and the ability to connect to a PC. Many are already predicting the death of the Rift S. Oculus is selling the Quest like hot cakes and sees it as the main driver of progress in the VR industry. But it is still raw, I think at the moment it is not worth buying it as a PC helmet (and for the most part I will use it that way). nine0005

And here’s my actual stop: Rift S. Hmm, where can I buy it?

At first, after looking at outbids and retailers in Russia, I was a little stunned by the extra charge of almost 10k, or even more. Unfortunately, Oculus itself is not sent to Russia, so my eyes turned to Amazon, B&H and intermediaries.

It’s worth making a note here: the last time I ordered from abroad was a long time ago and the delivery time was very upsetting for me then, I ordered discs from Game.co.uk and they went for 2 months, so I have some skepticism about the delivery time still remained. nine0005

B&H did not deliver the required helmet to Russia, so I could only buy through an intermediary (Banderolka, Pochtoy.ru and others), but Amazon, both from the USA and Germany, had direct delivery to Russia. The only problem is that Amazon does not say which couriers it will use and this will be known after sending. The Russian Post never inspired confidence in me, so it was scary to order like that. And yet, having calculated the delivery time and cost of delivery services, duties and customs clearance, I decided to use Amazon without intermediaries. Having chosen the German Amazon (because it arrived in the American helmet only 2 weeks after the order) with the delivery of «AmazonGlobal Expedited Shipping», on February 7 my parcel went from Milan to me in Surgut, courier: DHL Express. nine0005

Refreshing the tracking page every free second, I was looking forward to my package. Amazon gave me an arrival date of February 17, which was pretty good. Around the 8th in the evening, having made a stop in Leipzig, the parcel was already in Moscow, and here I began to worry about customs and who will receive the DHL parcel next. All customs documents (a copy of the passport with a residence permit and TIN) and the DHL duty were requested through their website, everything is quite convenient and fast.

The tedious waiting for customs began, which ended already … in a day and a half. Somewhere at noon on the 10th, the parcel was handed over to the collection point in Moscow, and already on the 11th at 10 am it was in Surgut at the local DHL office. Yes, it’s still a shock to me that it’s so fast. nine0005

Having brought it home at lunch, I decided to immediately try to connect it and check it, and then disappointment awaited me — the computer did not see the helmet in any way. After trying all the USB ports, disconnecting all other devices, checking the drivers for the motherboard, restarting the PC several times, I could not understand why my PC does not see the helmet at all as a device. When my lunch time was almost over, I noticed that the wire going into the helmet sticks out a little and only then I realized that it was disconnectable, not solid … Having connected the wire normally, the helmet immediately showed up and I went to work. There were no more problems with the helmet. nine0005

Now to the actual helmet itself — it is very comfortable, fits well and even with my big glasses there is enough space in it. The cable is long and looks durable, but I certainly won’t check how much. The Touch controllers are very light and comfortable, I have seen some people complain that the batteries can fly out during intensive play, but I have not come across this yet. The setup took just a couple of minutes, and now I was ready to cut the blocks to the music, because. Pre-purchased Beat Saber, Pistol Whip and Pavlov VR. nine0005

Before the helmet arrived I still had doubts about what my experience would be due to the 80Hz screen and my rather weak PC (i5-4670, 24Gb RAM, 1060 GTX 6Gb). But all my fears were in vain, 80 Hz has never felt bad so far (I almost never get sick from VR games at all, except perhaps Ace Combat 7, after which I was sick all day) and my PC copes quite well.

Beat Saber seemed somehow harder on the PC version, completing the same levels on Expert as on PSVR. And of course, it’s still one of the best VR games and a must buy. nine0005

    The

Pistol Whip turned out to be a very nice alternative to the Beat Saber, though it’s a bit of a shame to play with just one controller.

For some reason, the stream turned out to be not as smooth as the game itself, we still have to tinker with the settings.

Pavlov VR has not yet opened up for me, unfortunately all the servers that I found were at least 120 ping, and with the same bots it’s not so interesting, although the game itself is very good.

    Other things I tried:

Another remark: because for a long time, many developers have scored on the demo version, I use pirates to check the operation of the game and whether I actually like the game itself. Of course, you can buy and make refunds, but it’s quite dreary, and anyway, I rarely play pirates for more than 2 hours, largely because they don’t always get updates (and in the modern industry, releasing a normally working game on release is almost a miracle already) , and it’s just more interesting to have a game in the collection. Therefore, I did not buy all the games listed below. nine0004

Fallout 4 VR — Looks great, but Besezda didn’t put in as much effort as she did with Skyrim VR. The game is quite twitchy, the game looks more like a regular VR mod for Fallout 4. Unfortunately, due to the twitchiness, I couldn’t play it for more than half an hour.

Vader Immortal — Oculus exclusive (although other helmets can play games from their store via Revive), very beautiful, with an intriguing start. But the whole game is quite buggy, for any movement from the boundaries invisible to the player, it immediately closes the view with the inscription that the player has gone beyond the limits, and this can happen even when you just stand and move your torso a little, a very small zone is reserved for the player and in battles it’s incredible annoys. nine0005

GORN — a fun threshing machine with various weapons of some pumped-over dwarves, it is very fun to play, I think I’ll take it in the future, unless of course I don’t like Blade&Sorcery more.

Until You Fall — a very cool bagel with swords, axes and other melee weapons. Probably one of the most unexpected games for me, must-buy.

Lone Echo — again an Oculus Store exclusive, cinematic spaceship game. Nice graphics and even more pleasant controls, in which all movement in gravity is done with the help of hands and pushing / pulling to objects, you can comfortably play even while sitting. nine0005

Borderlands 2 VR — Surprisingly plays very cool in VR, even though I’m not a big fan of the series. The cartoonish graphics look very good, the various guns are fun to shoot and again seated for those who are tired after long sessions of Beat Saber or Pistol Whip for example.

And some other features of helmets from Oculus — in addition to their own store with exclusive games, they have a free software called Oculus Dash. This is such an interface from Oculus inside the helmet that allows you to open the desktop in the helmet or attach windows (for example, twitch chat). It would seem a trifle, but many helmets do not have such a function and you have to buy OVRdrop in addition (although it costs only 289R).

Phew, it looks like I painted everything. If anyone has questions, I’ll be happy to answer.

There should be an ad for the stream at the end, but I stream once every 10 years, so don’t waste your time.
