Assassin’s Creed Unity: Nostradamus Enigma guide

If you’re getting stuck into Assassin’s Creed Unity this weekend then you’ll likely stumble across a collection of truly maddening mysteries in the form of Nostradamus Enigmas. These obscure riddles are littered all over Paris, and require you to interpret the sort of clumsily structured prose that would make Dan Brown blush.

We’re working our way through the main storyline of Unity in a seperate walkthrough article, but we thought it might be handy to put together a quick, separate guide for you that breaks down every one of these mindbending puzzles, and shows you how to pick your way through the obscurity.

Assassin’s Creed Unity: 8 Most Important Changes to Assassin’s Creed

Once you’ve tracked down all of the Enigmas outlined in the links below, head back to this page for a guide on how to solve the puzzles and loot your lovely armour reward.

The Cella Constellation

Once you’ve grabbed every last one of these puzzles, you’ll be able to open up the cage that contains your reward. Make your way towards the underground part of the mansion containing the Cafe Theatre, then solve a trio of puzzles to open up the cage and get your hands on that delicious Thomas de Carneillon armour.

When you have four fragments you’ll be able to tinker with the Cella Constellation by fiddling with the pedestal in the middle. The puzzle here isn’t too tricky, and you just need to line up the pillar symbols with the corresponding symbol on the ground. Use the walls to find these pairs and get them nicely lined up.

As soon as you’re done, you’ll see a new opening appear in the wall that’s just above the puzzle room. Clamber up, then make use of the pillar handholds to get inside this opening. Finally, interact with the lever to take away the first protective section of the cage.

The Cella Astri

When you’ve gathered at least 10 bits of the Enigma collection, you’ll be able to unlock the Cella Astri. To do this, interact with the central pedestal, then enter the room that opens up. Next, you need to play with the collection of switches so that the planets line up with their equivalents on the ground. It’s a fairly simple observation puzzle, but we’ll give you a quick walkthrough.

First, press the left-most switch three times, then the middle switch once, then the final switch three times. When you’re finished, a new opening will appear. Go to it, then use the lever to remove another bit of the cage’s protection.

The Cella Vaporis

When you’ve collected all 18 of the Nostradamus Enigmas you’ll be able to unlock Cella Vaporis. Once again, go to the central pedestal, then leap from stone to stone to reach the new opening. Just watch out for the scalding steam that fires at you as you go. When you pull the final lever, you’ll be able to grab your lovely loot. Congratulations!

Assassin’s Creed Unity Guide: Where to Find All 18 Nostradamus Enigma Symbols

Even after the single player campaign is complete and Arno Dorian’s story has been told, there are still many things to see and do in Assassin’s Creed Unity. One of the more popular options among players is to find and solve all 18 of the Nostradamus Enigmas, unlocking the Thomas De Carneillon armor, as well as the Accurate Prediction, and From the Past trophies and achievements in the process.

We won’t lie to you, even with our help the journey is going to be a long one, but having completed it ourselves, we have a few tips to see that you don’t make the same mistakes we did, as well as a full guide to show you exactly where you need to go, and what you will have to do.

  • Spend some time synchronizing with the districts in Paris. This will open up the map and allow fast travel between points of interest. Synch points are indicated by Eagle icons on the map.
  • Try to stay on street level when you’re traveling on foot. While the rooftops will prevent you from running into pesky Extremists, the constant climbing and jumping will slow you down.
  • Further to our previous tip, avoid Extremists and random events at all costs, unless you don’t care about how long this takes. Simply run past Arno’s enemies and toward your objective.
  • Start points for each Enigma are found on your map. Look for an icon that resembles an ancient scroll, then match the puzzle name (Saturnus, for example) with our solutions down below.
  • If you know you’re in the general area where a riddle or solution is found, listen closely for a distinct sound that grows stronger as you get closer.
  • Once you know you’re within a few feet of the symbol, use your Eagle Vision to confirm its location and interact with it.
  • Some of our map images are zoomed in to give you an idea of where a symbol is located within a building or small area. Note the district in the image to help you narrow down your search.

To the fields of War.

N2 Solution

N3 Riddle

False idols celebrate,
On stage they entertain.
Supreme is the Being,
Who calls himself so.

N3 Solution

The third solution is found a short distance away from the second, and also in the Les Invalides district. It’s located on the stage of the celebration of the Cult of the Supreme Being. Players may recall this from Sequence 12 — Memory 1: The Supreme Being.

P2 Solution

To find the second piece of the puzzle, head up further onto the roof of the Pantheon, focusing on the south side. You’ll find the symbol near the columns.

P3 Riddle

Pillars support my face,
Hold the nation’s dreams.
Square, not round, they,
Sit out of sight.

P3 Solution

The third symbol is located on the ground at the east side of the Pantheon, next to a row of square pillars. Players should be careful of Extremists in the area, taking cover behind a pillar to interact with the clue.

P4 Riddle

My purpose changed,
I watch; high in the nave.
As secular heroes enter,
To replace those of heaven.

P4 Solution

The fourth piece of the Enigma can be found inside the Pantheon, high up in its nave. Look on the walls for the symbol, taking advantage of Eagle Vision to pinpoint its location. Players can use nearby scaffolding to reach clue.

P5 Riddle

The remains of fame,
Lie amidst stale air.
The most famous of all,
The tomb of Voltaire.

P5 Solution

The final piece of this Enigma is perhaps the hardest to find in all of Assassin’s Creed Unity, partly because it’s nearly impossible to describe its location. Look for stairs that lead to the basement of the Pantheon, sneaking past or neutralizing any guards that might be lurking about. We had to slide under a wall to get there, and the sound that the Enigma makes when in close proximity to it can be a major help to players. It might also be beneficial to note its location on our map to get an idea of what part of the building it’s in.

R3 Riddle

Far from the river,
Those men who observe,
Gaze up at the stars.

R3 Solution

The final symbol for the final Enigma is also found in the Le Quartier Latin district, but at the very south part of the city, sitting on top of the Paris Observatory. The area is crawling with Extremists, but players should be able to rush in and use a lift to quickly reach the rooftop. Once there, take out the Extremists on top interact with the solution.

How to Unlock the Armor of Thomas De Carneillon

By returning to the Café Théâtre in the Ile de la Cité district, players can enter the underground section of the mansion to claim their reward for finding all 18 of the Nostradamus Enigmas. It should be noted that if this section of the mansion is blocked off, the mansion likely requires upgrades before it can be accessed.

Head down into the underground section, interacting with the console that sits just at the base of the stairs. This will unlock the door to the Cella Constellatio. After heading inside and dropping down, take note of the symbols on the floor. Players will need to reference these symbols with the ones lining the wall, then match up the pillars. This will open a door high up on the wall, one which can only be reached by climbing the pillars. Start at the ledge where you stool prior to dropping into the room.

With the previous puzzle complete, head back to the center console and interact with it to open the door to the Cella Astri. For this players must align the planets, and this can be done by interacting with the three consoles in front of them. To make this easy, here is how you unlock your reward.

  • Interact with the left console three times
  • The center pedestal need only be used once
  • Adjust the third console three times

Go back out to the main area and once again interact with the console at the base of the stairs. This will open up the Cella Vaporis door, but instead of a riddle, players must use their parkour skills to navigate across the walls. This is complicated by steam that will knock Arno off the wall. Players can try to time and anticipate the steam, but we found success just moving as quickly as possible. It will not be unheard of for players to have to attempt this dozens of times.

With all three obstacles now taken care of, players can head to the room just above the mansion’s training area and equip the Thomas De Carneillon armor.

Nostradamus phenomenon — why people believe in his predictions He is the author of a book that predicts the future of mankind until the year 3797. So, at least, Nostradamus himself claimed. The interpretation of the texts of this weighty tome has been going on for almost 500 years, and the interpretations of different experts often do not coincide — due to the double or even triple meaning of some expressions. However, this does not bother the supporters of Nostradamus, who in the 21st century are looking for answers to their questions in his «Prophecies».

About the medieval author and why people believe in his predictions — in material REN TV .

Who is Nostradamus

Michel de Notredam, known throughout the world as Nostradamus, was born in 1503 in the small town of Saint-Remy in southern France into a wealthy family of a grain merchant. Michel’s maternal grandfather Jean de Saint-Remy was a renowned physician. For many years he served as medical officer to the Duke of Lorraine, René the Good.

Michel’s grandfather taught him the basics of mathematics, Latin, Greek and Hebrew. He also introduced him to the basics of astrology, which at that time everyone (or almost everyone) took very seriously. Then the parents sent their son to the University of Avignon, where he studied grammar, rhetoric, geometry, arithmetic, music and astrology.

In 1522, after completing his studies in Avignon, 19-year-old Michel entered the University of Montpellier, one of the most famous medical centers in Europe. In 1525 he received a bachelor’s degree and with it the right to independent medical practice.

Over the next few years, he will complete his doctoral dissertation, become a famous doctor, fight the plague, successfully using pills prepared by him, which included rose petals and other herbs. «All who used them were saved and vice versa,» he later wrote. For this work, the Parliament of Provence awarded Nostradamus a lifetime pension.

Having thus received, although a modest but steady income, Nostradamus settled in the small provincial town of Salon-de-Provence and lived there until his death. He did not leave medical practice, he was very interested in land reclamation and climate improvement. With his assistance, a canal was built, which irrigated the arid area around the city. 18 villages still use water from this canal.

How did the pseudonym of the predictor

In the Middle Ages, it was fashionable to change one’s surnames into the Latin manner, but this was done according to certain rules: either the Latin ending -us was added to the surname (for example, Notredameus), or the entire surname was translated into Latin.

In this sense, the name Notredam should have sounded like «Nostradomina». Instead, the prophet used the variant «Nostradamus», which in Latin sounds like «we give», and this at one time caused a lot of ridicule.

How Nostradamus became an astrologer

By 1550, Nostradamus became interested in the occult sciences. A major role in this was played by his deep conviction that it was he who was destined to «scientifically» open the veil that hides the future.

Another circumstance cannot be ignored. Predicting the future in the 16th century was a very profitable business. Every self-respecting king or major feudal lord usually kept a court astrologer with him. Both ordinary nobles and bourgeois were interested in astrology.

To meet the demand, dozens of almanacs were published annually in mass circulation. In 1550, Nostradamus produced the first such almanac with predictions for each month and continued to issue them annually until the end of days. Only one such yearbook has come down to us — for 1559year — in which there are quite a lot of banal predictions about famine, epidemics, floods, but nothing more specific.

Nostradamus Predictions

Nostradamus published the first part of the «Prophecies» (they are also called «Centuries») in 1555. In its full form, it consisted of 10 centurial chapters, each of which (except the seventh, which remained incomplete for some reason) included 100 quatrains-quatrains. But the chapters did not coincide with the centuries, and there was no chronological order in the presentation of the plots.

In the preface addressed to his son Caesar, Nostradamus explained his idea in the following way: their fragile feelings. Everything must be written in a vague form, above all prophetic… I have compiled books of prophecies, each of which consists of one hundred astronomical quatrains or prophecies. These are eternal prophecies, for they extend from our days to 3797 years «.

To create even more fog, Nostradamus encrypted his predictions in a mixture of four languages: Greek, Old French, Italian and Latin. They practically did not indicate any dates, the time sequence was not respected, and the quatrains themselves were mixed up.

Quatrains of Nostradamus

The word «quatrain» (from the French quatrain) is translated as «quatrain». In a broad sense, quatrain is a separate stanza containing a complete thought and consisting of four lines. Quatrain does not have a canonical form, therefore, poetic meter and rhyming scheme can be any.0005

The history of the phenomenon goes back to the medieval era. The first quatrains-quatrains appeared in the French drama of the XII century «The Game of Adam», written by an unknown author.

The stanza quickly took root. Its short form is convenient for perception, but allows you to express the idea. Inscriptions, dedications, epitaphs, epigrams and messages were written with quatrains. It is not surprising that over time this method of organizing poetic speech spread almost all over the world. Many famous poems are composed precisely of quatrains, for example, «I remember a wonderful moment …» by Pushkin.

What Nostradamus predicted

At first, the work of Nostradamus did not arouse much interest, almost no attention was paid to it. But in 1559, when he was already the court astrologer of Henry II, celebrations took place on the occasion of a double wedding: they celebrated the marriage of the royal daughter with Philip II and his younger sister with the Duke of Savoy.

According to tradition, a jousting tournament was arranged, in which the king himself participated; his rival was the Comte de Montgomery. During the duel, the count’s spear broke, a fragment through the visor pierced Henry’s skull and exited through the ear. The injury turned out to be fatal, after a long agony, the monarch died.

In the book of Nostradamus by that time there was already a mention of a similar tragic event. Quatrain I, 35 says:

The young lion will surpass the old one,

On the battlefield in a single duel,

Having scratched out his eyes in a golden cage,

Which will lead to a painful death of the old one

The tragic death of the king turned out to be a great success for Nostradamus. After the death of Henry II, many believed in the supernatural abilities of the author of the Centuries.

True, skeptics still have questions, as they say. Montgomery was indeed younger than the «old lion» — Henry II, but the difference in age was only 10 years.

The mention of the «golden cage» and «eyes» in the quatrain attracted much attention. It is known that during the competition, Henry II fought in gilded armor, but the spear entered the skull above the right eye.

There is another reason not to pay too much attention to this prediction. In the 16th century, jousting tournaments were not yet uncommon, and many of them ended tragically. The message of Nostradamus, if desired, could be applied to any of these fights.

Nostradamus about Russia

The astrologer died almost 500 years ago, but his prophecies continue to amaze many loyal supporters. Nostradamologists consider the following to be the largest of the predictions: the French Revolution, the rise to power of Hitler, the beginning of World War II, the development of the atomic bomb and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

If we talk about predictions concerning Russia, then they are on a separate line. There are many of them, as well as many options for their interpretation. Nostradamus, of course, did not use the words «Russia», «Rus», but commentators believe that he called the Russians northerners, Aquilonians (that is, living in the region of the north wind — Aquilon).

Here is quatrain II, 68, which Nostradamologists attribute to Peter I:

Aquilon’s efforts will be great.

The gate to the ocean will be open.

The kingdom on the island will be restored.

London will tremble, open to sail.

The first two lines do not need comments. The last two, according to commentators, reflect synchronous events — the restoration of the Stuart dynasty (1660) and an episode from the second Anglo-Dutch war — a breakthrough of the Dutch fleet into the Thames (1667). But, strictly speaking, the synchronicity here is rather relative. Between the events in England and the events in Russia — the foundation of St. Petersburg in 1703 — there is an interval of almost 40 years and you can’t call them synchronous.

Prediction I, 49 — one of the few that are dated, that is, have the exact date of the prediction — is also attributed to Russia.

Many, many before such intrigues

People of the East with lunar dignity.

In 1700 they will make sure that the great ones

(or many) will be led away,

Almost conquering the angle of Aquilon.

Researchers believe that Nostradamus wanted to say that the eastern Muslim power (under the sign of the crescent) will defeat Christian Europe, take away many prisoners and almost capture the outskirts of Russia.

In fact, in 1696 Russia conquered Azov from Turkey and gained access to the southern seas. And just in 1700, Turkey was forced to sign an agreement with Russia recognizing this fact.

Two quatrains are connected with the history of German-Soviet relations in 1939-1941.

V, 1:

Before the start of the Celtic fall

Inside the temple two will

negotiate.

Dagger in the heart — seated

riding a horse with a pike.

Making no noise — a great burial.

II, 38:

A large number will be condemned,

When the monarchs are reconciled.

But for one of them such a

bad obstacle will arise,

That they will be connected very weakly.

There is some similarity here, but it is very distant. The researchers note that the realities of these predictions date back to the 16th rather than the 20th century.

What is the phenomenon of Nostradamus’ predictions

The popularity of Nostradamus did not decrease even after his death in 1566. The Prophecies are being translated into many languages, edition after edition. The work of Nostradamus, as noted by one of the Nostradamus scholars, is perhaps the only book, except for the Bible, which has been published almost continuously for almost five hundred years.

It is not difficult to understand this interest. There were no easy times either in the 16th century or today. People at all times have been concerned about what the future holds for them. And thanks to the vague presentation of Nostradamus’s predictions, every commentator over the centuries could «adjust» the source to his own needs, reorienting most of the predictions in accordance with his personal preferences or political order.

What was attributed to Henry of Navarre in the 16th century could be attributed to Napoleon in the 19th century and to Hitler in the 20th century. Under the agents of the Antichrist, about whom Nostradamus talks a lot, in the 16th century they meant «godless Calvinists», in the 18th century — «godless Jacobins», and in the 20th century — «godless Bolsheviks». The main role here has always been played by the sympathies or antipathies of the interpreters to this or that historical person or phenomenon.

Why people believe in Nostradamus’ predictions

It’s all about the properties of the human psyche. People want to believe that it is possible to foresee something or, if something has already happened, to «see the prediction» of it and reassuringly think that if you study the works of all soothsayers, you can change the future, or at least prepare for it. This is a person’s desire to control life and the eternal belief in the supernatural.

There is a good reason to take many predictions of Nostradamus with skepticism. Perhaps the soothsayer’s supporters make one very characteristic mistake. In their opinion, his writings tell about the events of the distant future.

But it would be much more reasonable to perceive the messages of Nostradamus in the context of his time. The prophecies may well have been veiled attempts to predict the phenomena characteristic of that era. It is unlikely that a person, even an astrologer, who lived in the 16th century, was very worried about the events of the 19th or 20th century.

An accident played an important role in the fact that Nostradamus became known all over the world. After the soothsayer’s death, his student Jean-Aimé de Chavigny did everything to ensure that the mentor’s works were published. It is likely that, if not for the efforts of de Chavigny, Nostradamus would have remained in memory solely as the court astrologer of Henry II and would not now be on a par with such prominent people of the Renaissance as Leonardo da Vinci and Nicolaus Copernicus.

Historian, author of the commented translation of «The Prophecies of Master Michel Nostradamus» Alexei Penzensky, in an interview with Naked Science, stated that this happened because the oracle was given at the mercy of a cheap sensation: «In his prophecies, people still try in vain to find what which he never meant. Nostradamus, like many of his contemporaries, was an esotericist, he believed in mysticism. But there is hardly anything supernatural in his works — in the usual sense for us. Nostradamus was convinced of the correctness of his predictions. He realized that history develops in cycles, in a spiral. This helped him to foresee the events of the future.I believe that Nostradamus also had a powerful intuition. However, the intuitive concept «a debatable question, so far no one has been able to identify algorithms intuitively» .

Islamic state predicted by Nostradamus? — Parliamentary newspaper

It is difficult to say what exactly the medieval alchemist and soothsayer had in mind, but his words nevertheless become similar to the truth. 15 years ago, American propagandists strongly imposed on everyone the idea that we are talking about Saddam Hussein, whom they tried to present as the embodiment of universal evil. However, under him, multi-tribal and multi-religious Iraq was united, lived richly and relatively peacefully — local conflicts such as the war with Kuwait were provoked by the Americans, whom Hussein he served faithfully, but he was also a radical Other Islamists, or rather, terrorists, did not bother me too much. As, however, in Libya and Egypt.

The terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, headed by the American protege Bin Laden, later became a candidate for the «evil eastern king». But at the first need, the core of the organization was destroyed, and its individual cells that have survived to this day do not pose a serious threat.

However, now the so-called «Islamic State» — a terrorist organization whose activities are banned in Russia and a number of other countries — looks like an absolutely real danger to humanity, the economy, and culture. Moreover, this is not a regional, but a global threat of the 21st century, as Chairman of the State Duma Sergei Naryshkin emphasized at a meeting of the “Open Tribune” held recently in Moscow on the topic “The situation in the Near and Middle East. ISIS as a Threat to Civilization. He noted that the Islamic State has been creating a dangerous situation in the regions of the Near and Middle East for a long time, and this terrorist organization is not Islamic and does not represent a state, which politicians, scientists and theologians rightly say.

Indeed, the threat from ISIS is growing day by day. Just last week, its militants staged a series of explosions in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, a terrorist attack with numerous victims in Turkey, in the Iraqi province of Anbar in the city of Ramadi, they blew up, destroying to the ground, the Olympic Stadium, which was the largest sports facility in the region, its cost was 1, 25 million dollars. For this action, the terrorists used 3.5 tons of explosives, apparently, IS has no problems with the supply of weapons.

Moreover, a joint investigation by two independent British organizations — Conflict Armament Research and Sahan Research — proved that militants are using chemical weapons in Iraq and Syria. In June alone, three such cases were recorded — two in the province of Hasakah in Syria and near Mosul in northern Iraq. Militants stuff bombs with chlorine, phosphine (a poisonous gas that is used, in particular, in the manufacture of pesticides) and other chemicals to increase the degree of destruction. As you know, Saddam Hussein was overthrown and executed only on suspicion that he possessed chemical weapons. And now everything is quiet, US President Barack Obama does not want to notice the threats.

At the same time, the Islamic State plans to expand not only through intimidation and brainwashing of the population. “This organization would like to look like a pillar of order and a peculiarly understood justice both for the population of the Near and Middle East and beyond,” Sergey Naryshkin said at a meeting of the Open Tribune. The IS phenomenon lies in the demonstrative cruelty of the measures used, and in the speed of expanding the territory that comes under the control of terrorists, and in their high combat readiness (more than one regular army is fighting them, not counting the militias), and finally, in the deployment of a global recruitment campaign like-minded people. They are sworn in by new supporters, whom they find far beyond the region, including in Russia and other European countries, the Chairman of the State Duma noted.

Indeed, adherents of a blunt, evil force, and having nothing to do with either Islam or the Middle East, are unexpectedly found even among students of Moscow University. The question arises: what are the departments of philosophy and law doing there if the first recruiter they meet easily persuades a Russian student to flee into the arms of bandits? Moreover, there are defenders who do not allow the failed terrorist to be expelled from Moscow State University.

And some humanities departments of Moscow State University, as well as a number of other universities, have something to do: the spread of militant Islamism indicates a lack of real specialists both in the problems of the East and in counter-propaganda — this was also paid attention to by the participants of the «Open Tribune».

However, how real is the danger posed by IS, and is Nostradamus right? There are two scenarios here. The most pessimistic was announced by the leader of the LDPR faction Vladimir Zhirinovsky . In his opinion, the Islamic State is trying to continue the century-old Caliphate of Baghdad. The creation of such a state was hindered by such Arab leaders as Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, Hosni Mubarak. Vladimir Zhirinovsky called modern IS fighters “Islamic Bolsheviks”, who are united by the unity of ideology, reliance on terror and suppression, and also rely on the poor, who are the majority in Asia. He believes that the goal of ISIS is a future strike against Russia, China and Europe. Some representatives of these countries are now undergoing combat training in IS, and then they will return home and start creating terrorist cells, the LDPR leader said. The most dangerous region in this regard is Central Asia, which they will flood with blood. “They are trying to drag Russia into a war on two fronts,” Vladimir Zhirinovsky believes. “Ukraine is like a training ground, and then we will get a blow from the Islamists through Central Asia.”

Evgeniy Satanovsky, president of the Middle East Institute , looks at the situation differently. He sees the possibility of a turning point in the IS offensive. He noted that the core of the ISIS — the Syrian-Iraqi knot — has weakened enough today: there are about 30,000 militants left, they are suffering heavy losses. “The Druze entered the war, who began to be killed in southern Syria, the Kurds are quite active in the Kobani-Haseke direction. Iran has become more active, the aviation forces of Bashar al-Assad have also become more active, which means that a temporary shortage of spare parts has been overcome in Syria. And in conditions of air support, even a poorly organized army beats well-organized terrorists. The increased recruitment of new supporters, including here in Russia, is due to the fact that the militants urgently need replenishment. Meanwhile, the flow of refugees from the cities of Fallujah, Raqqa and Ramadi, home to tens of thousands of family members of IS leaders, shows that they are preparing for the imminent fall of these cities. This paves the way for an attack on Mosul early next year. In general, I would not look at the situation so tragically, «Evgeny Satanovsky emphasized.

During the discussion, a member of the State Duma (“Fair Russia”) Oleg Nilov suggested writing an appeal addressed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov with the idea of initiating the creation of an international tribunal for the Islamic State terrorist group in the UN Security Council. In his opinion, for the first time since the founding of the UN, humanity has encountered such a criminal organization, whose activities require the reaction of the entire civilized world. “I want to remind you that the task of international institutions is, first of all, the solution of problems that threaten the whole world. ISIS is the number one threat to the world,” Oleg Nilov emphasized, “however, despite the atrocities committed by militants, an international tribunal has not yet been convened, sanctions have not been announced against individuals, organizations, countries that are accomplices of these criminals.
