How Much Money Does Ninja Make?
It’s been a long journey to the top for Ninja. But at 30 years old, he’s one of the most popular names in gaming.
By May 2018, he had more than 188,000 Twitch subscribers, a number that dropped by 40,000 in June after taking two days off for E3 2018. Ninja then went on to have a brief stint with Mixer, a streaming platform owned by Microsoft, before ultimately returning to Twitch in 2020.
Ninja started out as a competitive Halo player in 2009, beginning with Halo 3 and competing in the game for the next seven years through to Halo 5. He represented teams such as Cloud9, Team Liquid, and Renegades, winning a number of tournaments, including the MLG Fall Championship 2012.
While still competing in Halo, Ninja branched out into streaming. He started out streaming Halo, and added games like Titanfall and Call of Duty to his schedule. Eventually, he picked up h2Z1, and battle royale titles took him into the next phase of his career.
After h2Z1 came PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Ninja joined Luminosity Gaming. He won the PUBG Gamescom Invitational squads event and moved on to full-time streaming with Fortnite. And that’s when things exploded.
Before jumping to Mixer in August 2019, he was the most popular streamer on Twitch. He had broken just about every record there was, including the one for most concurrent viewers. On Mixer, Ninja averaged far fewer viewers, but his multi-year exclusive deal with Mixer was allegedly worth between $20 million and $30 million, according to a talent agency executive who previously worked with Ninja. A Bloomberg report also indicated that top streamers received $40 million deals.
And those figures seem plausible considering Ninja told CNN in a 2018 interview he made nearly $10 million in 2018, with most of that coming from advertisements.
Following his move to Mixer, it was difficult to track his subscribers, which reportedly reached 1 million shortly after his arrival to Mixer and rose 2.
3 million in October 2019 thanks to a free sub deal following his transition. If Ninja and Mixer split the money from those subscribers, then he made at least $500,000 in the first week he streamed on Mixer. Donations also aren’t exact, but he certainly raked in thousands while on the site.
Before moving to Mixer, Ninja said he earned $3.50 for every $4.99 Twitch subscription to his channel. In Mixer’s partner FAQ section, it says it splits “the income of the subscriptions” with partners, although the exact split for Ninja may be more in favor of him than others.
Twitch leaks
Ninja was also one of many content creators who had their payout history on Twitch exposed in a data breach on the platform in October. The breached data included how much money streamers made from August 2019 to October 2021 from subscriptions, advertisement revenue, and bits.
For Ninja, this new information only shows a fraction of the kind of income the content creator has reeled in over the course of his career.
Much of his revenue on Twitch came in 2018 when he broke numerous viewership records, but that data was not among what was disclosed through the breach.
Additionally, Ninja left Twitch in August of 2019 in favor of a lucrative deal with Mixer, and he didn’t return until one year later when Mixer shut down its operations. So out of 26 months that the breach had recorded payouts for, Ninja was only on Twitch for about 14.
Despite not being around for nearly half of that 26-month period, Ninja was still the 46th highest-paid streamer over that time period, racking up $1,378,791 according to the leaked data.

It’s the end of an era for streamers. Mixer’s shutdown announcement came as a surprise not only for fans, but for those who provided content for the service.
While some may consider the shuttering of the platform proof it was a failure, its impact on the streaming world may be longer-lasting. Mixer proved that there is a demand for talent — including Tyler «Ninja» Blevins — and that big-name streamers might very well outlast the platforms they use to make themselves famous.
Now that it’s gone, you can expect a few chaotic days as streamers decide where they will land next. Ninja himself has not made any decisions. He tweeted on June 22 that, «I love my community and what we built together on Mixer. I have some decisions to make and will be thinking about you all as I make them.»
Mixer has teamed with Facebook Gaming to make the transition easy, but Ninja has already reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from the social media giant. However, he’s also been very vocal about why he left Twitch: his reasons for joining Mixer included less toxicity, stronger community connection and more opportunity for growth. Oh, and probably more money and earning potential.

When Ninja left Twitch for Mixer, he was one of two major streamers courted by Microsoft for high-profile exclusivity deals. The other was Michael «Shroud» Grzesiek. CNN Business reports Ninja made close to $10 million in 2018 and had 14 million Twitch followers, along with deals with Adidas and Red Bull. He played a role in helping Twitch get as big as it is, so it wasn’t a stretch for Microsoft to think he might do the same for Mixer.
Ninja was tapped to become, in some ways, the «face» of Mixer, and his decision to leave Twitch shook up the streaming industry. It also heralded a new age, of sorts — one that involved exclusive contracts for high-profile streamers and the types of paydays seen mostly in conventional professional sports. It’s likely this legacy will remain, giving streamers more power and more choice going forward.
Despite Mixer’s investment, however, it remained the smallest and least sustainable of the streaming services. The Verge notes that while Twitch reported 100% year-over-year growth in terms of hours watched, and Facebook Gaming has grown 238% since April 2019, Mixer only gained two-tenths of a percent. This in part explains Microsoft’s decision to close it down.
Ninja made bank from the deal, but he won’t stay a free agent for long

Ninja’s notoriety was not enough to save Mixer, unfortunately. He’s been with the streaming service since August 2019 and was apparently unable to help jump-start its growth. He reportedly saw a decrease of 10 million followers and his viewership numbers dropped, too.
However, he’s certainly been able to enrich himself in the process. While there wasn’t much information on how much he received from his multi-year exclusivity deal when he left Twitch, later reports alleged that he made $20-30 million by signing with Microsoft.
Business Insider claims Ninja did indeed receive his full payout from Mixer, making him supposedly about $30 million richer after less than a year streaming on the platform.
While Ninja has not yet announced what his next steps are, you can bet everyone will be watching to see where he lands — and how much his presence will enrich the next streaming platform he goes to.

On June 22, Microsoft unexpectedly announced the closure of Mixer — the streaming service will cease to exist on July 22. Social media linked it to allegations of racism the company had filed a day earlier, and condemned management for depriving all streamers of income without warning.
The only beneficiaries are popular content creators like Ninja, who are finally free of their Twitch-banning deal and earn huge royalties. TJ figured out what is happening around the «death» of Mixer.
In 2017, Microsoft bought the streaming service Beam and renamed it Mixer.
Soon the platform received integration with the Xbox One, the ability to stream three simultaneously, and other features. But the service attracted wide attention only at the end of July 2019.year, when streamer Ninja (Tyler Blevins) announced that he would start streaming exclusively on Mixer from August 1 and leave Twitch, where he had gained 14 million subscribers. The media reported that Microsoft paid $20 million to $30 million for Blevins’ transfer.
The contract set an industry precedent. Streamer’s wife and manager Jessica Blevins attributed the transition to Twitch’s «community toxicity». After that, the number of hours of unique content in Mixer increased by 188%. In October, streamer Shroud (Mike Grzesik) signed a similar exclusive contract with the service.
On June 22, Microsoft announced the closure of Mixer on its Twitter — social networks noted that neither the service employees nor the content creators knew anything about this in advance. The company offered streamers to switch to Facebook Gaming and promised similar monetization conditions.

In 2019, Ninja, one of the most popular streamers, switched to Mixer. This deal was estimated at 20-30 million dollars.
The day before Mixer shut down, former Mixer employee Milan Lee spoke about the racism he faced at work. The boss told Lee that he was hired only because he was black, and the company has a quota for people of different skin tones. Later, the manager compared the streamers to «slaves», and called herself a «slave owner». Lee asked that the analogy not be used, but was refused and hinted that he should «work on himself.» Lawyers took up the complaint, but found the manager innocent.
Following Lee’s blog post, Mixer acknowledged the ex-employee’s story as true and vowed to «be vigilant.» Head of Xbox Phil Spencer thanked the former employee and offered to meet to discuss the problem. Later, Lee noted that the conversation took place and proved to be productive.
In social networks, two events were immediately linked — the closure of the service and the accusation of management of racism. Users condemned Microsoft for the fact that the company, instead of solving problems, deprived all platform streamers of work.
After closing the service, Microsoft terminated contracts with Ninja and Shroud. According to insider Rod Breslau, they refused to switch to Facebook Gaming even when they were offered a double payout, so Microsoft had to buy out the contracts.
Ninja received about $30 million and Shroud about $10 million, according to Breslau. As a result, they created content exclusive to Mixer in a little less than a year. Ninja and Shroud thanked the Mixer audience and stated that they have not yet chosen which platform they will switch to.
Twitter decided that Ninja and Shroud were the biggest beneficiaries of the entire existence of Mixer — they earned huge royalties, and they would not have to continue streaming on a platform that was seriously inferior to Twitch in terms of audience.
