7 Days To Die is a game that’s been around since 2013 but has remained in early access. It’s a survival sandbox game where players are survivors in a zombie apocalypse. Throughout the game, players are scavenging for items and building up a base that can protect them from a slew of zombie creatures that will make their way into the area. As the name suggests, this game is based around a week where in the first six days the player won’t have much of a problem going around the open in search of new supplies, gear, and upgrades to make for their base. Meanwhile, on the seventh day, a horde of zombies will flood into the area which means that your base will be put to the test. If you manage to survive the night, players can once again go out and scavenge for more items, make upgrades to their base and once again attempt to make it through the next powerful horde of zombies. This does support cross-platform multiplayer so players can work together whether they are on the same platform or not.

#13 Dead Island

Release Date: 31 May 2016 | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One
Camera: First Person
Multiplayer: No
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 4)
Genre: Zombies, Open World, Gore, Horror, Crafting

Steam | Playstation | Xbox

Dead Island was developed by development studio Techland which had players taking a role of a random character trapped on a resort island when the zombie apocalypse hits. In this game, players are trying to find a means to escape the island which is a bit easier for you as it’s discovered that your protagonist is immune. Regardless, the different infected zombies are still very dangerous and as a result, players will need to use different weapons or objects nearby to melee the different hostile enemies at bay. It was a pretty thrilling game and it featured cooperative gameplay support.

Players can even join a game online and go through the different campaign missions together. Fans really took up with the IP and the game ended on a bit of a cliffhanger. Unfortunately, Dead Island 2 has quite the rocky development process with the IP being swapped around to different studios. It’s been several years now and so far there’s been no real signs of life for Dead Island 2, but fans are holding out hope that a new game will release, continue on a fun storyline, and provide some more great co-op fun.

#12 Resident Evil 5

Release Date: 15 Sep 2009 | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch
Camera: Third Person
Multiplayer: No
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: No )
Genre: Action, Zombies, Third Person Shooter, Horror, Adventure

Steam | Playstation | Xbox | Nintendo

Originally, Resident Evil 5 wasn’t the most highly respected title from the iconic survival horror franchise. This title threw players into the role of Chris Redfield as he partnered up with a local BSAA agent in Africa, Sheva Alomar. The duo is tasked with tracking down the latest virus outbreak that has popped up resulting in a nearby town becoming infected and incredibly hostile. Much like every Resident Evil game, the title is centered around a conspiracy full of twists and turns along the way. As mentioned, at the time this was a bit of a black sheep for the Resident Evil community as it was more action-oriented rather than being a survival horror experience that the IP was mainly known for. However, now players have changed a bit of their opinion and have found the game to be just a solid action-horror co-op experience. There’s plenty of firefights, melee combat, boss battles, and puzzles to solve along the way.

#11 Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Release Date: 2020 | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch
Camera: Third Person
Multiplayer: No
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 4)
Genre: Action, Zombies, Shooter, Violent, World War II

Steam | Playstation | Xbox | Nintendo

2020 we finally got a new installment to the Zombie Army franchise. After the 2015 Zombie Army Trilogy launched, this game puts players right back into 1946. This title is set after the event of the past game trilogy where Adolf Hitler was defeated by the resistance and sent to the depths of hell. However, it looks like the Nazi undead has invaded with overwhelming numbers. Now the Allies were forced out of Germany as they began another war. The Dead War has just begun, and you’ll have to save the world from this undead army and a cultist group looking to claim the world. This is a thrilling game to play with friends and can be a fun co-op shooter, especially if you’re after something new.

#10 Left 4 Dead 2

https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/zombie-army-4-dead-war-switch/

Release Date: 17 Nov 2009 | Platform: PC
Camera: First Person
Multiplayer: No
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 4)
Genre: Zombies, FPS, Shooter, Action, Horror

Steam

Left 4 Dead 2 was a massive hit when it launched. The game had players taking the role of a survivor attempting to escape from a dangerous infested area. This is an action-packed experience where players will get an assortment of guns to random objects they can use as a melee weapon. With up to four players being able to join into a group and go through the different levels and objectives, it’s surprising that as much positive reception this franchise got that we didn’t see a third mainline installment already. However, if you’re on PC then you’ll find that there is a ton of mod support here with new levels, designs, and gear being put into the market for players to enjoy. One update brought so much content that Valve pushed the update out officially on the PC platform years after the last previous final update to the game. Fans are still hanging onto Left 4 Dead 2 but it might not be the case for too much longer as there are more eyes on a spiritual successor IP coming out within 2021 called Back 4 Blood.

Release Date: 13 Mar 2020 | Platform: PC, Xbox Series X|S. Xbox One
Camera: Third Person
Multiplayer: No
Co-op: (Local: 0 | Online: 4)
Genre: Survival, Open World, Zombies, Base Building, Post Apocalyptic

Steam | Xbox

State of Decay 2 is a Microsoft exclusive that has players working together during a zombie apocalypse. This title has players building up a community, scavenging items, gathering survivors, and fighting off infected that roam into the area. Everything is a bit of a management simulation as you’re having to make upgrades to your community, seek out more people in need of help, and ensure you have enough resources to make the next journey out into the open. Players can swap around different community members with all their different attributes which may make them useful in certain areas but a burden in others. For instance, you might find a person that is great when it comes to shooting and endurance while another character is skilled in grounds keeping. Players can join into a game together online for a co-op session as well but the host will be the player that’s rewarded with the different resources and supplies. Currently, this is the latest installment to the State of Decay franchise, but we do know that the development studio is working on State of Decay 3. We just don’t have the details right now about what we can expect with the upcoming installment.

#8 Killing Floor 2

Release Date: 18 Nov 2016 | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One
Camera: First Person
Multiplayer: Yes
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 6)
Genre:  Zombies, Gore, FPS, Survival, Horror

Steam | Playstation | Xbox

Killing Floor 2 is a game that is often recommended for players looking for a new multiplayer zombie game to play. While zombies are a bit of a loose term here since there are a lot of mutated creatures to battle against called Zeds, this is still a thrilling game to play. Overall, this is a wave-based game where players are working as a group defeating the different aggressive monsters that flood into the level. With different classes available, each member of the group can provide a useful attribute to help in the various battles. Meanwhile, the game round will end allowing players to use the in-game currency earned to purchase even more useful upgrades and weapons.

#7 World War Z: Aftermath

Release Date: 21 Sep 2021 | Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch
Camera: First Person, Third Person
Multiplayer: Yes
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 4)
Genre: Zombies, Action, Shooter, Violent, Combat

Steam | Playstation | Xbox | Nintendo

If you want something new to play that acts quite a bit like Back 4 Blood and Left 4 Dead, then you might want to take a look at World War Z. This is a game that acts like a novel and cinematic franchise of the same name. Essentially, players are battling against hordes of undead in different locations worldwide. However, you might find it surprising to see that this game can support a thousand enemies simultaneously, allowing them to swarm up and climb up on each other to reach players if they are on another floor or platform. You’ll have different objectives to complete, but overall, you have to find weapons, ammunition, and battle against swarms of enemies. With that said, there is an upgraded version of the game that came out called Aftermath. This brings in even more locations, characters, the ability to enter first-person, and a melee system.

#6 Resident Evil Revelations

Release Date: 20 May 2013 | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
Camera: Third Person
Multiplayer: No
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 2)
Genre: Horror, Action, Zombies, Survival Horror, Female Protagonist

Steam | Playstation | Xbox | Nintendo

Resident Evil fans have started to feel that the game series was getting a bit too action-horror focus rather than being survival horror much like how the IP started. With Resident Evil Revelations, Capcom took a step back and provided the survival horror aspect of tight corridor locations and plenty of puzzles to solve but also keeping the refined gun mechanics to deliver more precise aiming. Meanwhile, this game is centered around a large conspiracy as organizations have raised to deal with the different BOWs and bioterrorism that still is very much a major threat long after Umbrella had been dealt with. In this game, we’re transported to two different groups as they attempt to figure out what is behind the latest BOW attack so the game does split the narrative up leaving players in slight cliffhangers as they bounce between BSAA agents Jill Valentine along Parker or Chris Redfield and Jessica. It’s a thrilling storyline that mainly takes place on a secluded luxury ship within the middle of an ocean. With backup far away, players are mainly left to fend for themselves during their investigations.

#5 Resident Evil Revelations 2

Release Date: 25 Feb 2015 | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox
Camera: Third Person

Multiplayer: No
Co-op: (Local: 2 | Online: 2)
Genre: Zombies, Horror, Survival Horror, Action, Adventure

Steam | Playstation | Xbox | Nintendo

If you enjoyed the Resident Evil Revelations installment then the sequel may be just as appealing. It keeps up with the same mechanics and style as the first title. Here players are following another two sets of characters but to avoid spoilers we’ll be sticking with just the first main set. This game brought back Claire Redfield to the franchise where she had joined an anti-bioterrorism organization called Terra Save. During the welcome party, Barry Burton’s daughter Moira Burton attended to celebrate but the celebration was cut short. A mysterious group breaks in and knocks the duo out where they wake up in a mysterious remote island facility. Now the two are working together to figure out what is going on. This is an episodic journey but with all the episodes available, players can go through the game fully.

#4 Call of Duty Zombies

Release Date: 9 Nov 2010 | Platform: PC
Camera: First Person
Multiplayer: Yes
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 4)
Genre: Action, FPS, Zombies, Shooter, Military

Steam

I know this is a broad point but it’s one worth mentioning and that’s the various Call of Duty games that feature the iconic zombie’s mode. This is a fan-favorite game mode that is constantly popping up. Here the game is a bit like Killing Floor 2 where you’re dealing with waves of zombies as you attempt to earn money for better weapons along with opening up more sections of the level. Usually, there’s a wide range of different objectives you can complete as well rather than being a strictly wave-based shooter. Since there are so many installments out there it’s a game mode worth looking into if you happen to have some of the latest Call of Duty video game installments.

#3 Dying Light

Release Date: 26 Jan 2015 | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch
Camera: First Person
Multiplayer: Yes
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 4)
Genre: Zombies, Survival Horror, Horror, Open World, Survival

Steam | Playstation | Xbox | Nintendo

Speaking of Techland from our earlier point, Dead Island, the game they went on to develop after Dead Island was Dying Light. This video game is quite a bit like Dead Island in the fact that you have an open-world environment, melee combat with some gunplay along undead zombies to battle against. However, the game made a big change-up in that it was more focused on parkour. Players were running, vaulting over objects, and climbing up buildings to escape the monsters. This was a crucial mechanic as at night the zombies were far more aggressive and could chase players around. Just like with Dead Island, there is an online multiplayer component here as well. When players join online they can roam around the world freely or complete the various missions available. There’s even another mode where a group of players are having to battle against an opposing player that takes the role of an undead zombie creature. Here the opposing player is attempting to defeat the survivors while also making different upgrades to their character so that their attacks are even more deadly.

#2 Back 4 Blood

Release Date: 12 Oct 2021 | Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One
Camera: First Person
Multiplayer: Yes
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 4)
Genre: Zombies, Shooter, Action, FPS, Gore

Steam | Playstation | Xbox

Left 4 Dead was such a massively popular cooperative zombie FPS. While only two installments were released, there is still a strong fanbase that continues to enjoy these games today. Thanks to plenty of user-generated content, there’s something new to pick out and play regularly. However, the original developers that brought out Left 4 Dead, Turtle Rock Studios, developed a successor. This game plays out just like Left 4 Dead as you’re playing with a group of survivors trying to make their way through hostile undead monsters. What makes this game a bit unique compared to Left 4 Dead is that this game comes packed with a card mechanic system. Essentially this gives players a deck to add buff cards to their protagonist. These could be buffs for a variety of areas to help them out, but you’ll find that the enemy AI will also have a card mechanic system, which means you’ll also deal with buffed enemies.

#1 Dying Light 2 Stay Human

Release Date: 4 Feb 2022 | Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox
Camera:First Person
Multiplayer: No
Co-op: (Local: No | Online: 4)
Genre: Zombies, Open World, Combat, Parkour, Exploration

Steam | Playstation | Xbox

One of the more anticipated game releases for 2022 was Techland’s sequel to Dying Light. With Dying Light 2, we’re getting a narrative set a few years after the first game’s events. Here, players are taking the role of Aiden, seeking information about where his missing sister might be. Of course, this is set in another haven city as humanity strives to avoid the undead horde. A big part of the game is still very much parkour traversal. Aiden is skilled at quickly moving around the town and using melee combat, which is pretty crucial in quickly getting around the city from both thugs and the undead. Best of all, if you want to play with friends, Dying Light 2 Stay Human offers up to four-player cooperative support.

There is a slight catch here since you can’t actually start the game right off the bat with co-op. Instead, you’ll need to go through the first hour or so of the game. It’s essentially a section to catch you up on the narrative you’re embarking on and some of the mechanics. Afterward, you’ll be able to enable co-op support where you can join or invite friends to a game. Essentially, you’re able to go through the rest of the game with friends. Fortunately, the gear and XP progression you make during the game will carry over as well, so you’re still able to gain some progress for your character back into the single-player component. Likewise, because this game offers a focus on choices throughout the campaign, only the host will be able to make those choices.

Best Open-World Zombie Games Like Dying Light 2

After countless delays and years of development, Dying Light 2 was finally released in early 2022. Much like its predecessor, it reviewed fairly well and provided a ridiculous amount of content for players to sink their teeth into. Despite the best efforts of the developers though, all that content can only last for so long.

RELATED: Games That Were Supposed To Come Out In 2020 That Never Did

Whether they only complete the main story or opt for a full completionist run, players are eventually going to run out of things to do in Dying Light 2, at which point, they’ll likely be looking for a new open-world zombie game to play. The good news is that there are plenty of great options available to them, the best of which can be found below.

Updated November 8, 2022, by Tom Bowen: Whether or not Dying Light 2 was worth the wait is perhaps a matter for debate, but there can be no denying that it’s one of the most action-packed and content-rich open-world Zombie games ever made. For those who’ve had their fill of it and don’t want to splash out on the DLC though, there are plenty of other great open-world zombie games to help scratch that eternal itch. Some are a little different than Dying Light, but are still able to provide a healthy dose of undead carnage and are more than capable of keeping players occupied for quite some time.

18 Dying Light

It should perhaps go without saying, but those who enjoyed Dying Light 2 will almost certainly enjoy the game’s predecessor. After all, both games were developed by the same team and are set in the same universe. Sadly, however, a lot of people seem to be sleeping on the original game despite enjoying the sequel.

Perhaps it has something to do with the game now being more than seven years old, or maybe they’re just worried that it will end up being a little too similar to Dying Light 2 for their liking. Either way, these fears should be cast aside, as the next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series does a fantastic job of improving the game’s performance and visuals while still preserving its classic charm.

17 The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is an open-world game in the same way that Pokemon Legends: Arceus is. This is to say that it isn’t, really, though does boast sections that could be described as being open-world. For those who enjoy zombie games though, it’s something of a must-play, as the VR carnage that it’s able to provide really is top-notch.

Saints & Sinners throws players in at the deep end; often surrounding them with waves of terrifying zombies and forcing them to fight for their lives. The game also allows for a more stealthy approach at times, which can be as exhilarating as it is unnerving. With a sequel looming large on the horizon, those set up for VR would be foolish not to check it out, particularly if they’re fans of the show.

16 DayZ

Admittedly, the zombies in DayZ don’t really pose too much of a threat and can be easily avoided by those who know what they’re doing. Like in similar games, it’s usually other players that pose the real threat, which, perhaps ironically, ends up mirroring most television shows and movies about the zombie apocalypse without even meaning to.

Those who’ve watched The Walking Dead will know that outside of the first few seasons, it was actually other survivors that ended up killing off most of the main cast. Granted, a walker would occasionally pop up out of nowhere and take a bite out of someone much like a zombie might in DayZ, which is why the immersive ARMA mod is arguably one of the best and most realistic open-world zombie games out there.

15 7 Days to Die

Set in a post-apocalyptic future following a nuclear war, 7 Days to Die‘s premise is not too dissimilar to that of the Fallout universe. Where it differs, however, is the emphasis that it places on survival, with players having to start from scratch if they perish at the hands (or teeth) of the game’s zombie hordes.

Though the game didn’t quite live up to some of the promises made during its successful Kickstarter campaign, it’s still a lot of fun to play. Nighttime can be particularly enjoyable due to how daunting everything feels, although playing with friends can make survival a lot more manageable. At least until the Blood Moon occurs on the seventh day, anyway.

14 Night of the Dead

Although Night of the Dead does have some open-world sections, these are typically used for resource gathering rather than exploration. Without these vital resources, however, players would struggle to build up their defenses and would likely be overrun by zombies pretty quickly as a result.

There have been plenty of zombie-themed tower defense games over the years, but few have managed to blend the genre’s mechanics together with realism so seamlessly, nor are many quite as enjoyable as this. The game is still in Early Access on Steam at the moment but is already shaping up to be an excellent zombie game.

State of Decay 2 is just one of many Xbox-exclusive zombie games released over the past decade or so, though some will argue that it’s probably the pick of the bunch. The combat on offer here is absolutely fantastic and is backed up with a great score and some decent visuals too.

One of the things that makes the same so enjoyable is its relentless difficulty, which demands improvement from players if they’re to have any hope of surviving the game’s brutal and unforgiving world. It does have one or two problems, but these shouldn’t be enough to sour the experience for most players.

12 Unturned

Unturned is a little like Minecraft, only with a lot less crafting, far more zombies, and a boatload of assault rifles. It’s free to play, is available on PC and current and last-gen consoles, and offers a ridiculous amount of customization, both when it comes to cosmetics and map design.

RELATED: The Best Free Open World Games To Play Right Now (According to Metacritic)

There are a few different game modes available, although they all revolve around surviving hordes of zombies in some capacity. Most of them are multiplayer only, with some encouraging players to work as teams rather than go it alone. While there are PvP elements included, players aren’t obliged to kill their peers, allowing everybody to focus solely on taking out zombies if they choose.

11 Strange Brigade

Developed by the same team behind the Zombie Army trilogy, Strange Brigade took quite a few people by surprise when it was released in 2018. Rather than the spiritual successor to Zombie Army that many had expected, the game plays a lot more like Left 4 Dead, although this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The 1930s setting is interesting and makes a refreshing change from the dark backstreets and abandoned research facilities that typically host these kinds of games. The co-op elements also work incredibly well, although the narrative can at times feel a lot more B-movie than it does AA title. For those more interested in gameplay, though, it’s a solid pick.

10 Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare is still considered one of the best DLC expansions ever released for a video game. Other developers copied Rockstar because of it, like Sucker Punch Productions and United Front Games making Halloween DLC for inFamous and Sleeping Dogs respectively. Neither really compares to Undead Nightmare, though.

Most of the map from the original game is present in the DLC, but things have gone haywire for old John Marsden. Zombies aren’t the only thing that will get in his way either, and players will need the best set of guns they can get their hands on in order to survive. Best of all, it’s backward compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X and is incredibly funny to boot.

9 Days Gone

Days Gone got a bit overshadowed when it was released. It was a bit buggy and most were far more excited about Sony’s other big exclusive zombie epic, The Last of Us Part II. Reviewers may not have been particularly kind, but players couldn’t get enough and the PC release has only increased the game’s popularity.

This game is very different from games like The Last of Us and is a pure open-world zombie game in pretty much every way. The countryside is also breathtaking. Patches following its release have made it much better, so there has never been a better time to jump in, especially for PS5 owners.

8 Fallout 3

When one thinks of open-world games, the more recent Fallout titles are usually some of the first to spring to mind, even if the NPCs that reside in them are a little bit weird. Fallout 3 is where the series took a turn from its top-down perspective and helped to lay much of the groundwork for future entries in the series.

RELATED: The Most Breathtaking Locations In Fallout 3

Many might not consider it to be a zombie game in the traditional sense, but it is, in a way. Ghouls, the games’ zombie-like mutants, and other infected creatures roam the wastelands. It’s a horrifying look at the apocalypse but should feel like home for those looking for some scintillating zombie action.

7 Dead Island

Dead Island is an open-world game, but one that is a bit more segmented than some of its contemporaries. It’s like getting lost in a city landscape, albeit with lots of tropical nature surrounding it. It is a pure zombie game at heart though, and, like Fallout 3, is full of traditional RPG elements.

The game was a bit broken when it launched on the PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2011, but it has now been patched. There’s also a collection out on last-gen consoles making it a lot easier to get hold of. Since it is usually on sale digitally, and because it is its 10th anniversary this year, now would be a good time to try it out before its own sequel finally drops.

6 Dead Rising 4

The original Dead Rising game was almost like a tech demo for the Xbox 360. Capcom showed off what the system was truly capable of, with a ridiculous amount of zombie mayhem onscreen all at once. That’s not to say that it didn’t have its fair share of problems though, because it certainly did.

Though the majority of bugs and glitches have long since been patched out, the series hasn’t really evolved much past its original concept. Dead Rising 4 is the most recent and most polished of the bunch, however, so those wishing to tear zombies apart in a mindless way should probably start there.

5 The Last Of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II has what one could call open-world segments. They come and go as the game progresses, which mostly takes place in a linear fashion. It’s not quite Final Fantasy XIII, but it’s a far cry from some of the more traditional open-world games like Grand Theft Auto and Far Cry.

The emphasis on exploring to get materials still makes it a worthy candidate for adventure though and the story is expertly told. Plus destroying the infected in the game is far more satisfying than most, thanks in large to the brutal nature of the overall world and epic narrative.

4 The Evil Within 2

The Evil Within 2 starts off in a city that is full of exploration. It’s kind of like a more open version of Resident Evil 3, although the tone is a little different. After about the halfway mark, the game does start to get a lot more linear, however, so players should keep that in mind.

Caveats aside, The Evil Within 2 is still a great infected game, though the citizens in its nightmare city aren’t exactly zombies. They are still bloodthirsty though and will give players quite the chase while howling frantically as they close in for the kill.

3 Yakuza: Dead Souls

Yakuza: Dead Souls is an oft-forgotten entry in the Yakuza franchise. It’s a Yakuza spin-off that effectively serves as one big hypothetical, asking players what would happen if zombies ever ran rampant throughout Japan. As with other Yakuza games, it can be a lot of fun and there’s plenty of dark humor to lighten the mood.

Kazuma and his friends must fight back to take control of their beloved city and nation once again. The action focuses more on shooting than hand-to-hand combat and it is more linear than the main entries. Even so, it still has some of that open-world goodness that many fans adore Yakuza for.

2 Sunset Overdrive

Sunset Overdrive is like a zombie apocalypse caused by Mountain Dew or an orange energy drink equivalent. Like Dead Rising, the game impressively showed just how many enemies could litter the screen at once while also showing off a wide range of vibrant colors and interesting characters.

It’s an early, often forgotten Xbox One exclusive that some will feel didn’t get quite as much attention as it deserved. The pedigree of its developer, Insomniac, is ever-present in the game though, from its wacky humor to its creative use of projectile-based weapons.

1 ZombiU

ZombiU was like Ubisoft’s answer to Dark Souls. It plays with the idea of London’s population being overtaken by a zombie virus. A lot of people passed it up because it was a Wii U exclusive, a system that did not perform particularly well for Nintendo in the sales department.

The game did eventually get a port to last-gen systems, however, making it far more accessible to the average gamer. It’s not the most original zombie game ever made, nor is it the most ambitious, but there is still a lot of fun to be had in the infected streets of London.

Dying Light 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Top 15 Survival Games for PC

that many of them have been in early access – in some cases for several years. The desire to stay alive is in our DNA, so it is not surprising that we are so absorbed in this activity in the virtual world.

With so many games in this genre, how do you find the best one? The following games are, in our opinion, the best survival simulation games on PC that take place underwater, in space or in dangerous worlds filled with zombies, mutants or even dinosaurs.

The Long Dark

With a focus on atmosphere and survival in harsh environments, The Long Dark stands out among the wide variety of games in this genre. You play as a pilot stuck in a frozen desert after a mysterious global disaster. There are no zombies, mutants or other players: you will have to fight with the wild nature and your own human fragility.

Ark: Survival Evolved

Throws you almost barehanded into a sprawling map filled with dinosaurs and has to contend with extreme heat and cold, hunger and dehydration, and other people (although you can also play alone) . Craft weapons and equipment, build a base, tame and ride dinosaurs, join other players or fight them. The free Primitive Plus add-on adds crafting and farming features, while the upcoming Tech Tier update promises to add sci-fi movie weapons and equipment.

Don’t Starve

Don’t Starve Combining adorable animation and gritty gameplay, Don’t Starve is an addictive adventure and one of the best survival games ever (and it’s one of the rare cases where the game has come out of the early access). Crafting becomes challenging and fun as you try to survive the hectic days and deadly nights. Fight animals (and eat them), practice science and magic, keep an eye on your mental health so you don’t go crazy. The Don’t Starve Together standalone expansion also lets you play with friends.

DayZ

Yes, many players are already tired of waiting for the multiplayer zombie survival game to leave early access, and the fact that DayZ is rooted in the military simulator ArmA can scare newcomers a little . However, the elements of survival in DayZ are strong enough: a complex system of nutrition, hydration and health maintenance goes beyond simple snacks, drinking water and dressing wounds. Find food and resources in a detailed open world, engage in intense battles with other players, customize weapons and equipment for ships and try not to die: if you do this, you will have to start from scratch.

Subnautica

Explore an alien underwater world by piloting a homemade submarine through mysterious underwater landscapes. Among the beautiful coral reefs and deep sea caves and depressions, you will collect the necessary resources and livelihoods, create a habitat and submarine fleet, and create new technologies that will help you survive in the depths. It’s hard not to compare this game to Minecraft, but the developers of Unknown Worlds have managed to add something unique to the survival game genre.

Miscreated

At first glance, it seems that this game has become one of the clones of DayZ, which have appeared many over the past few years, but Miscreated has come to stand out from them as a stable and enjoyable multiplayer game built on the engine Cryengine with great graphics. When you start playing with only a flashlight and a change of clothes, get weapons and equipment by exploring deserted neighborhoods and military bases. Not only mutants and wildlife are a threat to you, but other survivors as well.

Starbound

In Starbound you can visit distant galaxies in your starship or build your own small farm, thus combining stressful survival with a cozy pastime. The pixelated 2D world is a joy to explore, and along the way, you’ll meet friendly alien NPCs and fight surprisingly tough bosses. There is a storyline and side quests, but there is no need to go through them right away — you can do it at any time convenient for you. You can also play with friends on dedicated servers or just invite them to your game through Steam.

Rust

Join other players or fight them (or try to survive alone), start with primitive tools and weapons, and eventually firearms and powerful bases will appear. You will have to fight wild animals, hunger and thirst, but this game is also built on interaction with other players, and the main threat comes from a dozen other players on the server. Rust is still experimenting with gameplay (recently removed character levels and the experience system), and we’re interested to see where this leads in the future.

Minecraft

You may have heard of this game. There are many ways to play Minecraft : alone, with friends, with strangers, in research mode, or in one of the thousands of mods on a special server. As a survival game, it still performs at its best, with a well-developed hunger and thirst system and thoughtful crafting and building. Once immersed in this beautiful blocky world, you won’t want to leave.

The Forest

After you manage to get out of the wreckage of the crashed plane, you will find that you are not alone. You share a mysterious island with a terrifying tribe of cannibals, and as you scavenge for food and drink, build simple shelters to sleep under a roof, and build traps for wild animals, you’ll have to defend yourself against hungry and determined locals. The environment is built in Unity 5, which provides amazing visuals and graphics.

Terraria

Wonderful, extensive and addictive (plus inexpensive) survival crafting game. Explore randomly generated worlds, collect resources and enjoy a simple but well thought out crafting system. Build tunnels through huge caves, fight monsters, befriend NPCs, build your palace and play alone or with friends in multiplayer mode. Terraria has been around for years, but it has stood the test of time.

Hurtworld

Don’t let the slightly cartoonish graphics fool you: Hurtworld isn’t your picnic. If you managed to survive the first few hours of looting, battles with mutants and other players, then you can claim a piece of land, build your base on it and repair the time-worn transport (if, of course, you can find the right parts). The emphasis here is not only on the interaction between the players, but also on the weather: for example, if it is cold enough, then the steak in your backpack will freeze, not go bad. In a game that punishes you for any misses, there are some nice indulgences, for example, when you die, your weapon is saved.

This War of Mine

War is depicted not from the point of view of an elite soldier, but from the point of view of a group of civilians who are simply trying to survive amid the chaos, This War of Mine differs from other survival games in its atmosphere of desperation and hopelessness. You will face tough choices as you manage the health of the survivors, both physical and mental. Searching for food and supplies at night is tense and painful, and no matter how much food you find, it will never be enough. This is not just a game of survival, but a harsh and truthful look at the very essence of war.

h2Z1: Just Survive

While there was a strange metamorphosis in Early Access (once it was planned to be a free game, but now you have to buy it), Just Survive is still a very fun game. Similar to DayZ, but much more simple: you try to get consumables while dodging zombie attacks by fighting (or befriending) over a hundred other players on the same server. Build bases, weapons and equipment, fight for food supplies and stay healthy in this multiplayer sandbox.
