Beginners Guide — Motorsport Manager PC

I wrote this guide to help people that are new to the game. This guide is written on the assumption that you will be managing in the lower ranks, I.e Tier 3, as I believe this is where most people start.

First thing to decide is whether to manage an existing team or create a new one. Take your time here as the difference is huge. I would strongly recommend starting with an existing team if you are new to the game as you often start with an average to good pair of drivers with some average staff.

Existing team. Your first target should be to finish 10th in the constructors championship. This takes any pressure off you in the first season and allows you to take time to develop parts and infrastructure. Coming last every race is nothing to be ashamed of if you are on of the bottom teams. There will be no pressure from the chairman and the funds are still enough to lay the foundations for the future. Now check your staff. If your lead designer has average all round stats, keep hold of them. If not, look for a new one with balanced attributes. If one of your race mechanics has average to high stats in reliability and the other in performance, keep them also. If not, replace one or both as required and be sure to place them on their strongest attribute in the improve parts section. Remember, the less you spend here the more you have for parts on your car later though so there must be an element of compromise. Get your mechanics all improving reliability at the earliest opportunity. Your first 1 or 2 races will almost solely rely on you getting to the end of the race relatively unscathed and reliability is a big factor for all teams in the beginning. Now your drivers. Chances are they are not too shabby and even if they are, it’s likely not worth the cost to replace them for your first season. You won’t have enough money to build anything yet so sort your sponsors. It’s well worth taking your time to wait for 3 in each a lot before deciding which to choose. Always go with those that give you the highest return:race ratio. Now you have some money, build your first part for your car. I pick the part that has the lowest stat and go from there. Your first parts won’t be great but don’t worry, it’s all about the process. As soon as it’s ready, add it to your reliability work. If you have the money, start work on a new part but don’t worry too much if you can’t afford it right now. Remember, this game is a marathon, not a sprint, no matter which game mode you play so everything you do is building for the future.

Create your own team. This is a long term project. Do not expect podiums or regular top ten finishes within your first 3-5 season. Focus on developing new parts and improving your HQ where possible. Factory, Design Centre, Scouting, forecasting, part development buildings, in that order as much as finances permit (always factory first though imo). Keep your existing drivers, they will do for now, but replace all staff that are not up to scratch using the info in the existing team section. The rest of your approach is similar to that above so have a good read.

Free practice. The jury is still out on whether you should sim or take control of your practice sessions. I have tried both and in all honesty, in your first couple of seasons, I have found there to be little difference. After this though, you do want to manually take the session and strive for the highest % you can on both cars as they begin to become more competitive. It can be the difference in coming last or inside the top 16, which makes a huge difference when you have sponsor requirements. If you do take control of the session, it is relatively simple to get a minimum of 95% for each car. Set the markers in the middle of the green zone and send your drivers out. Once they leave the pit, immediately recall them. Adjust and repeat until the session ends. If one of your drivers hits great or excellent in all 3 areas with time to spare, fuel them up and let them get some timed laps under their belt. While it doesn’t really effect anything, it increases knowledge and gives you an idea of their race pace.

Race. Start both drivers on red markers for tyres and fuel for the entire first lap. Then immediately lower fuel to yellow. Once your tyre temps are half way between middle and top temp, reduce to orange or yellow. It is then up to you to micromanage this for the remainder of the race.

Safety car. I have found on most occasions, that safety cars are either deployed early or late in a race. As a result, only pit if you are due to pit within the next 2-3 laps anyway. This does depend on your race length and for longer races, I would recommend always pitting under a safety car after the first 4-5 laps, but for shorter ones, stick to your own plan.

Pit stops and strategy. A well planned pit stop can make or break your race. In your first race or two, make repairs to your cars in your scheduled stops, even if they are not quite in the red yet. Yes it takes forever to repair, but almost every other car will be doing the same and you will only end up being forced to stop again when it fails or worse, you have to retire. Your goal is to finish the race. You will be surprised at the result you can get just because you finished, often top 10. After the first couple of races, reliability should cease to be an issue so plan your stops more carefully. Before your race, check how much fuel you have on a full tank and check your tyres as to how long they can last. Ideally, you want to pit 1 lap before your fuel is due to run out and when your tyres hit 25% condition. With this in mind, choose the fuel amount and tyre compound that allows you to push for the first lap and ease off a little after. Running less fuel and a harder compound is better than running a higher engine mode and softer tyres, so keep this in mind. You should repeat this process for your pit stops also and don’t be too afraid of repairing your car if you need to. Remember, finishing the race is what matters in your first couple of seasons.

Hope this helps. Open to questions and constructive feedback on all of the above.

Tkachuk: Yuka ADV Pro Racing Team is a project to popularize Motorsport

In an exclusive interview with AUTOSPORT. com.ru , Yuka ADV Pro Racing Team advertising manager Pavel Tkachuk spoke about the participation of the team in the Touring Light class in the G-Drive SMP RSKG , objectives for the season and goals outside the race track.

Tell us more about the Yuka ADV Pro Racing Team project…
Pavel Tkachuk
: The project was formed in 2021. Prior to this, Yuka took part in circuit racing with the B-Tuning racing team. Then it became interesting to try ourselves as an independent racing team, and we decided to implement an international racing project. nine0005

This season the team competes in the Touring Light class in the G-Drive SMP RSKG. Also, our pilot Sergey Stilov takes part in RDS Europe, where he took second place at the last stage in Moscow on ADM. During the season we had to skip the Kazan stage, because we were building a very powerful and reliable engine. We managed to achieve good power and show excellent results.

In general, the team is engaged in the popularization of motorsport by working with spectators at the stages. We are actively running social networks, we invite various artists, DJs, presenters, we give a lot of gifts, prizes, we are constantly developing. We started in winter, took part in the SMP RSKG karting championship. Our pilot Aleksey Savin took second place in the championship. They also competed in ice races, where they took the overall third place in the team in the winter championship. nine0005

The racing project Yuka ADV Pro Racing Team is actively developing and this winter we plan to hold our own sports racing festival, which will have a lot of interesting things not only for pilots, but also a wide range of activities for spectators. So we have big plans for development, and we are definitely not going to stop.

Tell us what Yuka is…
Pavel Tkachuk:
Yuka is an advertising agency headquartered in Dubai that has entered the Russian market. The team was created as an advertising asset of the agency, where customers can buy a place on the car, take part in the best championships, and not only in Russia. So, for example, our team showed up for the 24-hour karting championship in Dubai, which will be held in December this year. nine0005

Do you have a Russian manual?
Pavel Tkachuk:
This is an international project. We have our projects in different countries. In Russia, Yuka ADV is currently represented by a racing team. The advertising agency is preparing for a full-fledged entry into the Russian market as a full cycle advertising agency.

Let’s talk more about the racing team… How many employees do you have?
Pavel Tkachuk:
About 15 people: mechanics, engineer, service personnel and managers of different directions. nine0005

Why was the Touring Light class chosen? And tell us about the composition of the pilots, how it is formed.
Pavel Tkachuk:
The Touring Light class is quite interesting. There are two classes in the peloton — the S1600 and the Touring Light — and the races are always exciting. Why specifically Touring Light, I can’t say … Massive interesting class, so we decided that we should go to Touring Light.

We have been watching Alexei Savin for a long time. We cooperated with him even before Yuki, looked closely at him, because they saw potential in him. Plus, against the background of other pilots, an important factor is that he is the only Belarusian racer in the SMP RSKG (and this is always additional media attention). nine0005

Alexander Salnikov was chosen as an athlete with extensive experience in circuit racing. We get a fusion of experience and youth.

Photo: Yuka ADV Pro Racing Team

Who supports your team, as we understand you have already managed to find well-known partners in the Russian market?
Pavel Tkachuk:
Yes, absolutely right. These are fairly large companies, such as Business Menu, which specializes in instant food, DryDry, which produces cosmetics, and ICORE, a large IT company. nine0005

How do you integrate them into motorsport?
Pavel Tkachuk:
All partners receive branding of overalls and other external advertising surfaces on cars. Plus, separately, we always introduce viewers to companies in different ways. For example, now we have a draw on social networks — we are giving away a year’s supply of noodles from the Business Menu. We distribute products from customers, from DryDry at competitions: personal hygiene products, various sweat wipes. We give gifts, hold contests. We also give autographed tires to our viewers: an unusual and memorable gift. People willingly take part in activities. nine0005

What are your goals for the drivers for the season?
Pavel Tkachuk:
Of course, the result is the most important thing. But this year, turbo Volkswagens are coming, it is very difficult to fight them in the class. They are weighed down, but they still calmly go around everyone. Therefore, our goals: to show the best result in qualifying, to fight during the race, to give all the best — this is the main goal.

Photo: Yuka ADV Pro Racing Team

What are your global plans? Is it planned to expand the presence in other classes? nine0008 Pavel Tkachuk: Now the team is choosing a strategy for the future in terms of expansion. Thinking about what classes will be. Maybe it will be an extension of the program in the Touring Light, maybe a transition to the Touring or to a more mainstream class. This is the first independent season for us, we look around and evaluate the result. We will look at the end of the season, how everything went, and think in which direction to move. Maybe it will even be a GT4. There is something to think about here. But all this will be at the end of the season, as the championship ends. nine0005

So the Yuka ADV Team at this stage is not about the result, but about the popularization of motorsport?
Pavel Tkachuk:
Yes, this is also our main goal. Because, only about the result — it’s not so interesting. We want to attract as many people as possible to this area, to tell them about the wonderful world of racing.

Maria Melnikova

I have always wondered if these people could be in motorsport and what they would do behind the wheel of a racing car. Here is a special case. Sasha turned out to be so immersed in the topic of motorsport in all its aspects that it is completely impossible to single out only the driver in it. He is a manager, an ideologist and a creative in one bottle. And Sales Director of Kaspersky Lab. In fact, it was at his suggestion that the entire sub-brand «Kaspersky Motorsport» arose, which develops simultaneously in several directions, and it was he who created the team of the same name, which currently participates in the Blancpain GT Series. nine0002 We had a chance to talk to him during one of the race weekends, namely at the Paul Ricard circuit, where the 1000 km race was held on the eve of the 24-hour endurance in Spa. We were talking on a Friday night, in a completely empty press room, because it was the only quiet and cool place available in the 30-degree French night heat. He did not yet know that the next day for almost five hours they would lead in their class, and then retire due to a failed engine. That he will freak out, want to leave the race, and then say: «We must achieve everything and win.» nine0005

He talked about how he got into motorsport, how he became friends with Ferrari, how he drove his first race and created a real racing simulator, and I listened to him and understood that motorsport is a really big adventure for him, and he perceives the world , most likely through the prism of the monitor and joystick. But what a clockwork he is in his plans and ideas!

On the last weekend of July, on the 30th and 31st of July, the famous Spa circuit in the Belgian Ardennes will host a 24-hour marathon as part of the Blancpain Endurance Series, which anyone can watch on the website www.blancpain-gt-series.com — and at the same time, watch how the Kaspersky Motorsport team performs. nine0005

Alexander Moiseev: I have an old acquaintance, his name is Fisichella. Yes, the same one. I lived in Italy for a long time, and a friend introduced me to him. Through the same friend, in 2009, Richard Branson gave me and Zhenya Kaspersky an invitation to the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.

After this trip, Zhenya says to me: «Let’s get into Formula 1 with sponsorship, I want it, I want it.»

At that time, from the point of view of a purely mercantile calculation, we reviewed and calculated all the Formula teams, and Ferrari turned out to be the most profitable in terms of usability. It was also the most difficult in terms of starting cooperation. After all, we were essentially a start-up company, and they have long become monsters, and they themselves selected who they want to work with and who they don’t. It was then that the acquaintance with Fisichella came in handy, who introduced us to the agency that promoted and sponsored the brand. At that time, at a meeting, I dropped the phrase that “Eugene Kaspersky is Enzo Ferrari in the field of computer science,” and this bribed them. So in 2010 we launched a joint project where we acted as a support company. By the way, at the beginning we supported GP2 and personally Giancarlo Fisichella, who competed there, then we went up another step and came to F1. nine0005

A.M.: I ended up driving a racing car almost by accident. There was a funny moment when we were returning from the track in Monza with Enrico Zanarini (a very famous character in the world of motorsport, in the past the manager of many pilots, including Fisichella), and I drove him to the airport. Apparently, I did something on the road, because before leaving, he told me: “Come on, I’ll give you a test on the track. Better you kill yourself on the track than kill me along the way. And arranged a test for me. It was in Valencia. The tests went very well, by the way, and Zhenya Kaspersky was driving, and everything turned out quite well for both of us. nine0005

And then Ferrari asked us: “Do you want it?” And we wanted to.

The first experience was in the Ferrari Challenge. This year, all the teams were just moving from the 430th to the 458th, and I was put behind the wheel of one of the cars. For me it was the first race. And by the way, I won it then, however, in the Am category, of course.

A.M.: Of course, we don’t just ride. For example, last year, when it was customary to participate in the Blancpain GT Series, we collected all the marketing data and realized that even against the background of Formula 1, we are getting very good numbers here! Of course, Formula 1 is our main tool, but it is mainly B2B, and in terms of partnership stories, Blancpain is much more interesting. We have our own team here, our own stories, and despite the fact that this team is still under the wing of “AF Corse”, this is an awesome tool that complements our history with Formula 1 in a very beautiful way.

A.M.: Kaspersky Motorsport is still a sub-brand, and the only one we have. We are promoting Kaspersky Lab on it, naturally, a fan story, but still this direction is a bit away from the main business. Of course, as a result, we strive for people to buy the company’s products, but first of all, we want to receive sports results as well.

A.M.: You may be surprised, but we compared auto racing (primarily F1) with football when we made our choice. nine0005

Cumulatively, UEFA is probably larger, but the problem is that UEFA takes place every 4 years. And there are a huge number of stages every year.

As far as Ferrari is concerned, it is a very strong brand with history, charisma and an incredible viability factor. Spectators fundamentally watch Ferrari, their victories and defeats, and everything that happens around. No other team compares to Ferrari. So we chose Ferrari and were not mistaken. Our return is very large, with high coefficients. We figured that if we invest a dollar, we get back about seven dollars, as if we were buying advertising with this money. Gorgeous thing. nine0005

A.M.: Now one of our tasks is to find a “racing genius” who could become the face of Kaspersky. I really want to repeat the story of Alonso, who was «discovered» by Santander. We saw many interesting young guys, but we liked Antonia Fuoco, he is 19 years old, already a suitable age for Formula 1, he passed a number of tests in Barcelona and at the Nürburgring, and he rode very well. Now he helps with car settings, which both Vettel and Raikkonen really like. nine0005

Another very young Italian talent of eight years old is very cheerful on the map. We are thinking now what to do with it. Our guys were also watched, but, to be honest, I did not find anything outstanding. There are talents, but nothing more.

A.M.: I was also involved in the selection of people for the team. And my main requirement for them is that they do not go crazy in our realities. We are weird. We are an IT company. Moreover, our oddities can extend to anything. nine0005

For example, last year, right on the track in Spa, before the race, I soldered the tidy from the car.

They wanted to change it in the warehouse for 7500 euros, and I got strangled by a toad, and I soldered LEDs on it, and everything worked for us the whole race.

A.M.: It’s not difficult for me to participate in motorsport in the sense that I have time to work on the races. We go only about 10 races in a season. That’s not a lot. For our own convenience, we have adapted the entire internal organization of the races so that everyone is comfortable. nine0005

Everything used to be chaotic, but now I come to the track, get into the car and go.

The plan of action for the day is written to me by my coach Marco Chochi. It includes all aspects — work on the track, car settings, work with telemetry. The rest of the time, I can do my job, and I have such a job that I take a computer and do everything I need. That’s all.

A.M.: Well, for example, here my racing day tomorrow will look something like this: wake up at 8 am, leave at 8:30. You have to be on the track at 9.00 At 10:20 am I start the qualification. Then Marco ordered that we sit and relax until the start of the race, and no one disturbs us. In addition, we have a physiotherapist Roman who helps us relax.

In general, we don’t wander anywhere, we don’t waste energy, but at 18. 00 we start and away we go.

This time we will go in one shift (stint). We decided that a double stint offers more opportunities for error — because it’s hot, hard, and you still need to change tires and refuel with gasoline. But we will go to Spa in two shifts at once, since there are four of us going there, and after passing our shift, then we get 6 hours of free time when you can relax, eat and even sleep. nine0005

A.M.: I must say right away that we don’t have any special daily routine or menu, we eat everything.

But I’ll reveal a terrible secret: F-1 pilots also don’t have any diet during the weekend, no matter what they tell the journalists! Macaroni and cheese is a great diet!

I’ve seen it all over and over again ☺ The question is that after the race you don’t eat, but during the weekend you throw everything in a row, because you need calories. In addition, we are not going to F1, where every kilogram affects the speed, and our class is “Am”. With us, plus/minus 10 kg can change the time by 0.1 second. The tenth is, of course, a lot, but in our category it does not affect anything ☺

A.M.: A person always has an animal fear. There are no people who would not be afraid for their lives. I can tell for myself that in the same O’Rouge, the foot involuntarily rises from the gas pedal. At a speed of over 200 km / h, when the wall is approaching, like it or not, but scary, of course. But everyone who races has a transitional moment; I don’t know how to explain it, but after a certain number of kilometers, your human fear disappears that you can somehow harm yourself. And it happens very quickly. Then the next phase comes: you start to worry that if you are skidded / turned around / driven into the wall, then you will lose precious time and positions. nine0005

The main thing is that a person has certain triggers: when you enter a new phase, the trigger clicks, and you understand that you did it once — you will do it again.

A.M.: I really want to get into a program called Formula Medicine. These are courses for athletes who are located in the North of Italy. Everyone comes to them: both from Formula 1 and from the junior series: they train and train a lot of people. This is a combination of a medical program, physical training and an analysis of the chemical processes in the body, they completely describe your tasks for the next time in your life. To do this, you need to find 3 days of your life that you will devote entirely to the program. I promise: I will find it before the end of the year, because this must be done. nine0005

We are currently running the Kaspersky International Driving Academy — a kind of driving school for clients and partners, whom we bring to the tracks 10 times a year, motivate and put behind the wheel.

And now I want to bring the guys from Formula Medicine to the track to bring everything together and create a comprehensive training program. Because for many, the problem is not to show a decent time, but to «collect» the circle. For example, sometimes I just start to panic, I start to rush and make mistakes: I brake later, I exceed my speed, etc. But you need to do exactly the opposite — for example, brake earlier and press the gas later, and then suddenly 2 seconds are from somewhere . But first of all, you need to defeat this in your head, and doing this yourself is unrealistic. This is where specialists are needed. In addition, these trainings cost quite adequate money — conditionally, about a couple of thousand euros. nine0005

A.M.: We are currently working on one of the most interesting projects. Together with one team that used to participate in F1, we created a car simulator.

The case itself was cast from carbon fibre. In general, this is a car that does not exist, this thing is called “Kaspersky simulator”, we cannot say from which car we “ripped it off”, but, in principle, when looking at it, everything becomes clear.
