I’ll even go out on a limb and say that Deadly Alliance is the best 3D fighter to date! [Jan 2003, p. 88]

This game can definitely hang with the best of them, though, which may come as a big surprise to those who thought that Mortal Kombat was dead. MK:DA has enough for both old MK fans and more «modern» fighting game players to keep most everyone entertained for quite a while.

The fighting is as brutal as ever; perhaps even more so with the power of the PS2 behind it. ..but the fun is still retained.

It’s the perfect, brutal antidote to more complicated fighters like Tekken, but it’s also complex enough to satisfy those put off by the stupidity of previous games. Bloody great. [Playstation 2 Max]

The action just lacks the fluidity and finesse of some of the competition, like «Tekken» and «Virtua Fighter,» and that certain sparkle that makes good beat-’em-ups great.

Some of Deadly Alliance’s game elements are still very arcade-minded—such as ludicrously difficult bosses and schizophrenic A.I.

An outstanding improvement on a stale series. There’s still room for improvement; a few more fatalities would have been nice, and more detailed arenas to fight in would take the game up a level.

Then there’s stuff that’s just disgraceful to Asian people in general. For instance, Li Mei looks like she’s a drug-addled prostitute. And this is before she gets punched in the face.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Video Game)

I know who you are, the leader of lost souls, you can’t kill me, I’m immortal!
«I have relinquished my status as Elder God, to return to Earth, and lead you all into battle against our old adversaries. We must act now! We must stop this Deadly Alliance!»
— Raiden, briefing our heroes on the newest and most dire threat yet.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is the fifth fighting game installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Notable for being the first game in the series to skip the arcades (getting a straight-to-console release instead) and for dropping the numerals from the titles (although the logo does resemble a Roman numeral «V»). It was released for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox in 2002, the year of the first game’s 10th anniversary.
Scorpion’s ending in Mortal Kombat 4 shows Quan Chi being imprisoned in the Netherrealm — but he escapes this fate, and in the process, he discovers an ancient tomb with the mummified remains of Onaga the Dragon King, the first emperor of Outworld (and the dragon portrayed in the franchise’s logo). Quan Chi figures out how to resurrect Onaga’s dark army — the souls of various warriors must be implanted into the army’s dead bodies — and he strikes a deal with Shang Tsung to gain immortality in exchange for Tsung’s help. The deadly alliance has two major problems in its path — Shao Kahn and Liu Kang — but they are taken care of in short order: Kahn is killed while the duo swears a false allegiance to him, and Liu Kang is killed when Tsung disguises himself as Kung Lao and approaches a none-the-wiser Kang. After consuming their souls, Tsung and Quan Chi return to Outworld and begin their plans to resurrect Onaga and his fallen army — which is when Raiden gathers together Earthrealm’s strongest warriors to stop them.
Although still suffering from Video Game 3D Leap-related problems, Deadly Alliance was praised as the Mortal Kombat game which resurrected the franchise as a whole after the failures of Mortal Kombat Gold and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. It was the first game to include a Stance System — which allowed fighters to switch between two separate fighting stances and a weapon-based stance — and it also dropped the Running mechanic and it’s corresponding meter.
Character roster
- Returning from Mortal Kombat: Scorpion, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Reptile, Sonya Blade, Kano and Shang Tsung.
- Returning from Mortal Kombat II: Sub-Zero II, Kitana, Jax and Kung Lao.
- Returning from Mortal Kombat 3: Cyrax.
- Returning from Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero: Quan Chi.
- Newcomers: Bo’ Rai Cho, Drahmin, Frost, Hsu Hao, Kenshi, Li Mei, Mavado, Nitara, Moloch, Blaze and Mokap.
Two versions of this game were released for the Game Boy Advance. Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, and Scorpion feature in both versions. The first, which is named the same as this game, also features Frost, Jax, Sub-Zero, Kano, Kung Lao, Kenshi, Kitana, Li Mei, and Sonya. The second, Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, featured Bo ‘Rai Cho, Cyrax, Drahmin, Hsu Hao, Johnny Cage, Mavado, Nitara, Raiden, and Reptile, plus the exclusive characters Sektor, Noob Saibot, and Sareena (making TE the only Mortal Kombat game aside from Special Forces to not feature Sub-Zero as a playable character).
Followed by Mortal Kombat: Deception.

- the franchise’s Developers’ Foresight page
- the franchise’s Shout Out page
The game has examples of:
- Artistic License Martial Arts: In this game and the two following ones, some of the fighting styles are shown to be quite inaccurate, despite all the motion capture work. Sonya’s Tae Kwon Do is one of the most prominent examples, as it’s not focused on kicking in the slightest, unlike the real thing.
- The Bad Guy Wins: The eponymous Deadly Alliance of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung manage to bring Back from the Dead all of Outworld’s ancient army.
- Big Bad Duumvirate: The «Deadly Alliance» of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung.
- Concept Art Gallery
- Didn’t Think This Through: In Quan Chi’s ending, he decides he no longer needs Shang Tsung, and has Kano kill him. As the accumulated souls fly out of Shang Tsung’s body, Quan Chi decides to clean up loose ends and kills Kano. One of the souls then suddenly flies into Kano’s body. Liu Kang lives again.
- Downer Beginning: Complete with a Hope Spot and everything as Shang Tsung and Quan Chi attack Liu Kang and ultimately kill him in a two-vs-one battle.
- Downer Ending: Jax, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Kung Lao, and Sonya are all killed in battle against the Deadly Alliance and their Tarkatans, Frost betrays Sub-Zero and steals the Dragon Medallion, causing her to freeze herself with her own ice powers, Sub-Zero is left searching for a way back to Earthrealm, Kenshi is defeated by Mavado and left for dead, Scorpion is tossed into the Soulnado by Drahmin and Moloch and seemingly torn to shreds, Cyrax is unable to return to Outworld due to all his available means of inter-realm travel being compromised, Li Mei is imprisoned in one of Onaga’s soldiers and Bo’ Rai Cho diverts from the mission to save her, and the only one left is Raiden, traveling to Shang Tsung’s palace in a desperate attack on the Deadly Alliance. He loses.
- Enforced Plug: Done in-universe. Some of the extras found in the Krypt are comedy commercials where fictitious products and services are sponsored by the cast. Some of these also hint at Hidden Depths for some of the characters. For example, Scorpion is an ardent chef, Quan Chi is a soulful saxophone player, Kitana and Goro are golf buffs, Li Mei is a ventriloquist, etc.
- Expy: Li Mei of Mileena, with her general appearance, use of sai as weapons, and color scheme, but thankfully not her face.
- Fanservice Pack
- Five-Man Band: Earthrealm’s warriors
- The Leader: Johnny Cage
- The Lancer: Kung Lao
- The Smart Girl: Kitana
- The Big Guy: Jax
- The Chick: Sonya
- The Mentor: Raiden
- Sixth Ranger: Sub-Zero
- Hope Spot: In the fight during the Intro, Liu Kang appears to have Shang Tsung on the ropes when they fight. Too bad he did not notice Quan Chi sneaking up from behind
- Hotter and Sexier: All of the returning women here are notably more well-endowed and less-covered than they were back in the day.
- Jiggle Physics: Ayup. Mostly played straight, although there is the case of Bo’ Rai Cho’s gut and some cursory examination shows that it is Jiggle Physics done wrong, as the 3D artists animated malleable flesh the same way cloth would be animated. This is very noticeable when you jump around with a female character: boobs are not supposed to shake that way!
- La Résistance: Mostly notably Li Mei, who is part of a different movement from the Earthrealm warriors altogether.
- Mythology Gag: In Mortal Kombat: Conquest, there was a character called Master Bo. Bo ‘Rai Cho is clearly a reference to this man (with the other two syllables in his name forming a pun on borracho, the word «drunk» in Spanish).
- Our Hero Is Dead: At the beginning of the game, Shang Tsung shapeshifts into Kung Lao and kills Liu Kang using a Neck Snap.
- Practical Taunt: Each character has an action that can be activated with the R1 button and varies from style to style. Among these are taunts that either heal a small portion of health or boost attack power for a period of time.
- Sealed Army in a Can: The Outworld’s ancient army Shang Tsung and Quan Chi are trying to resurrect.
- Secret Character: About half the cast, including The Protagonist, Raiden. Though «unlockable» is a better term, since some of them (especially those on the heroes’ group) are known to the player form the beginning. Mokap and Blaze play it straight, as their existence is hidden from the player at the start, their unlock method differs from the other characters, and selecting them involves a secret code.
- Sequel Reset
- Shown Their Work: A lot of effort and research went into the implementation of a multiple Real Life martial arts and weapon styles in this game, Deception, and Armageddon, a fact that should become readily apparent if you bother to fight through Konquest Mode here.
- Shows Damage: Though it is just the characters bleeding nonstop.
- SNK Boss: Moloch. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung cannot match him.
- Stance System: DA is the first game in the series where you can do this. All the characters have a weapon stance and two fighting stances (except for Blaze and Mokap, who instead utilize three fighting stances).
- Status Buff: Each style had its own unique personal action (such as shoving away blocking opponents, hastily putting space between combatants, parrying attacks to leave enemies open for a hit, taunting to regain some health), including techniques that could briefly power up all attacks. Havik and a few characters in Armageddon have access to either these techniques or the self-healing taunts.
- Stock Scream: The infamous, widely-used Howie Long scream and an oft-used female scream can be randomly heard among the screamers in The Krypt.
- Stopped Numbering Sequels: Other than the logo resembling the Roman numeral V, Mortal Kombat games from here on until Mortal Kombat 11 were not numberednote Mortal Kombat 9 is not officially numbered; we just use the 9 to distinguish it from the 1992 original. While Mortal Kombat X is the tenth game in the series and «X» is the Roman numeral for 10, it is officially referred to as «Mortal Kombat Ecks».
- Supernatural Martial Arts
- The Hero Dies: The Deadly Alliance kill Liu Kang in the opening of the game.
- The Worf Effect: How are we told that we need to take the Deadly Alliance seriously? They kill Liu Kang and Shao Kahn in the opening movie. However, the Kahn they killed was Actually a Doombot whereas Kang gets better… Kinda.
- Title Drop: The last line of the intro.
Raiden: «We must act now; we must stop this Deadly Alliance.»
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
- Moloch and Drahmin. After Scorpion makes a truce with the younger Sub-Zero and drags Quan Chi back to the Netherrealm (as seen in 4), he starts chasing the wizard throughout the lands, beating the white off of his ass as repayment for killing his family (this is shown in Deception‘s Konquest mode). The two onis stop Scorpion, allowing Quan Chi to flee and discover Onaga’s tomb. They are indirectly responsible for jumpstarting a Wham Episode that has continued to the present day and into the future.
- There are other factors, such as Nitara leading Reptile astray (according to his bio, Reptile knew of the Deadly Alliance’s assassination attempt on Shao Kahn and would have been able to stop them had he not been sidetracked), but most of the blame can be traced back to the two Oni, as they prevented Scorpion from killing Quan Chi.
- Villain Opening Scene
- Wham Episode: This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. To put this into perspective, five games (and two decades) later, we are still dealing with the repercussions of one event.
- Wham Line: In the intro:
Raiden: «Liu Kang… is dead.»
- Wham Shot: Multiple in the intro. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi seemingly killing Shao Kahn, formerly established as being a huge threat, in a Curb-Stomp Battle, and perhaps even worse, the shot of Liu Kangs corpse after being murdered by the two sorcerers.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: At the end of 4, Raiden was promoted to Elder God and Fujin took over as protector of Earthrealm. In Deadly Alliance, Raiden has stepped down as an Elder God and Fujin is never mentioned.
- What the Hell, Player?: Mild version, but if you spend too long reading the intro explanations in konquest mode, the little apprentice avatar turns to the camera and shrugs
«Stop this Deadly Alliance»
Raiden uses a very specific phrase to describe Quan-Chi and Shang Tsung teaming up, and Steve of the Yo Videogames crew doesn’t let it go without comment. (Video Source: https://youtu.be/PS5R1GCUMBU)

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance — Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance / Mortal Kombat — Deadly Alliance
The fifth installment of the Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance game offers many changes regarding its prototypes. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi joined forces to completely destroy the opponents. They wanted to get rid of Raiden and a group of his supporters, but the unexpected happened … In the game we will see old comrades, including Sonya, the Cyrax robot (Cyrax), Sub-Zero (Sub-Zero) and Jax (Jax). There will also be completely different fighters, such as Moloh, Blind Kenshi, Malvado and several other spectacular warriors. The fierce fighting itself takes place in several arenas, and they use the so-called Multi-Move Combat Systems. Thanks to this innovation, the player can choose a set of punches and kicks and customize them according to their preferences.
That’s not all. Here is a more realistic approach to fights. A kimono or other attire may be torn, kumite fighters sweat and their wounds bleed. Extremely fast strikes, melee weapons, dodges and feints, amazing jumps, tricks, mawashi, fatalities or eye-catching strikes are all included in this edition of Mortal Kombat! nine0006

Mortal Kombat Universe
Trust no one.
Except for his mortal enemy.
Mortal Kombat has always been and always will be. For thousands of years, the forces of good and evil have been fighting for control of Earthrealm. Some want to use the tournament to destroy all good. Others seek revenge, power, or eternal life. From time to time, Earthrealm was threatened by danger, but the problem was solved, and it again enjoyed the world. Now the Earth is in danger again, but now evil has two faces. It became known that the sorcerer Quan Chi escaped from the Underworld. He unraveled the mystery of the ancient Runestone, found the ancient unstoppable army of the long-forgotten Dragon King, and, most dangerous of all, formed an alliance with one of our most sworn enemies, Shang Tsung. nine0006
By joining forces, they came up with a plan to defeat the two creatures that could prevent them from taking over Outworld and Earthrealm. The first was Outworld Emperor Shao Kahn. Having sworn allegiance to him, they vilely attacked him. After that, they went to Earth with the help of a mystical portal known only to sorcerers and gods. There they fought Earth’s most powerful warrior and Mortal Kombat champion, Liu Ken. Shang Tsung wanted to get the soul of a great warrior, and with the help of Quan Chi, he succeeded. Liu Ken is dead. nine0006
They returned to Outworld to use the souls of defeated warriors to resurrect the unstoppable army of the Dragon King. If they succeed, they will easily conquer Outworld, and then Earthrealm. They will be invincible. I can no longer stand by and watch the evil consume the world. I gave up my title of Elder God in order to return to Earth and lead you into battle with our old adversaries. Now we must act. We must stop this Deadly Alliance. nine0006
«Raiden’s speech to the great warriors of Earth, delivered at the fortress of Shang Tsung’s old island in the Lost Sea, before leaving for Outworld, taken over by the Deadly Alliance. »
CYRAX
The cybernetic ninja Cyrax regained his soul with the help of Special Forces agents Sonya Blade and Jackson Briggs. In gratitude for their help, he joined the Outworld Research Agency and became a scout in Outworld. During his last journey between the realms, he was attacked by a lizard-like creature. In battle, he damaged his control panel and got stuck between worlds. He defeated this creature, but he had to find another way to return to Earthrealm. nine0006
ENDING > Hot lava burned Cyrax’s sensors almost instantly. He began to wander blindly through the hell pit, trying to find the Orb, the coordinates of which had been given to him by Nitara. He found him resting on a small pedestal. As soon as he got to him, she demanded that he give her the Ball. Nitara promised to return Cyrax to Earthrealm once the Orb was ready. She cast a magic spell, and a glittering portal opened around Cyrax. He bowed to her and disappeared into the portal. nine0028
FROST
Sub-Zero reformed the Lin Kuei clan and organized a tournament to recruit the best of the best into the clan. The winner was a mysterious woman named Frost, who turned out to have freezing powers similar to Sub-Zero’s. Breaking with the traditions of the clan, the new Grand Master personally began to train a new recruit. With his help, Frost mastered her power to perfection. But Sub-Zero could not teach her obedience, and her arrogance grew as quickly as her strength. nine0006
ENDING > When Sub-Zero and Frost returned through the portal to Earthrealm, Sub-Zero praised her for being instrumental in the destruction of the Deadly Alliance and told her that he was proud that she is a member of the Lin Kuei clan. What Sub-Zero didn’t know was that Frost had only come to the Lin Kuei to become a Grand Master herself. She used an ice blast to stop him and ripped the Dragon Medallion from his chest. Holding the Medallion in her hands, she felt the power flowing through her body. But, due to the lack of strength and discipline required to control the immense power of the Medallion, she became a victim of her own freezing. nine0028
BLAZE
A mysterious Outworld elemental known as Blaze roamed the realm. He was caught by the people who guarded the dead Dragon King’s body and forced him to become the guardian of the last Big Dragon Egg. For many years he remained in an incubation chamber hidden in the mountains as the Protector of the Egg.
ENDING > Enslaved by sorcery and locked in the incubation chamber, Blaze was released as soon as the egg cracked. He continued his wanderings, which were interrupted by his captors. nine0028
DRAHMIN
For centuries, the Onian tormentor Drahmin lived in the fifth circle of Hell. Therefore, Moloch was not surprised when Drahmin accepted Quan Chi’s offer to be freed from the Underworld without delay in exchange for protection from the Scorpion. Dramin and Moloch brutally suppressed all attempts by Scorpion to approach Quan Chi. They returned to freedom to once again taste the taste of living flesh.
ENDING > Two Onians known as Moloch and Dramin were sent by Shang Tsung to destroy Quan Chi. While fighting, Drahmin jumped on Quan Chi and they ended up in the Ancient Chapel. A moment later, Drahmin emerged from the Chapel, shedding his former form. nine0028
BO’ RAI CHO
During the years that Shang Tsung held the Mortal Kombat Tournament, Bo Rai Cho, an Outworld trainer, was secretly training warriors for the competition. It is believed that it was he who brought the fighting style of drunken boxing to Earth. After many years, he found the Shaolin Monk Liu Ken and taught him new techniques that helped Ken defeat Shang Tsung. When control of the tournament returned to Shaolin, Bo Rai Cho returned to Outworld…
ENDING > Even though Bo Rai Cho looked rough on the outside, he was glowing on the inside. After defeating the Deadly Alliance, he and Kung Lao liberated Outworld. Despite the years that have passed since he taught his last student, he has proven that he is still capable of much. Bo Rai Cho was jubilant, if that word could describe his indescribable joy.
Kung Lao invited his teacher to return with him to Earthrealm and teach there at the Wu Shi Academy. His student’s success has restored confidence in his skills. Refusing to appear, he agreed. After all, the liquor from the Outer World is not even close to earthly rice wine. nine0028
HSU HAO
The mission of Su Hao, a member of the Red Dragon, was to infiltrate the Special Forces and track down the Black Dragon. When the Black Dragon was destroyed, Su Hao was ordered to remain in the ranks of the Special Forces as an undercover agent. His master, Mavado, ordered him to deprive the «Outer World Investigation Agency» of the ability to travel to the Outer World… At any cost.
ENDING > Su Hao reported to his superior Mavado that the «Outer World Research Agency» had been destroyed and received a new assignment. .. Quan Chi seemed to be a strong ally and willing to help the «Red Dragon». Mavado agreed to help in the destruction of his enemies. The wizard suspected that Shang Tsung would betray him, and he knew that the two Onians Moloch and Dramin sided with him. Su Hao’s new task was to destroy the sorcerer Shang Tsung before the Onians destroyed Quan Chi. nine0028
JAX
Jax spent most of his time in the underground bunker of the Outer World Investigation Agency. He sent his agents there to different worlds through an artificial portal. Two of his agents, the cybernetic ninja Cyrax and the swordsman Kenshi, were sent to Outworld, a realm of strange creatures and maniacal wizards.
ENDING > Jax wanted revenge on the traitor he knew as Su Hao. A member of the «Red Dragon» infiltrated the «Outer World Research Agency» and destroyed it. Eventually, Jax caught him and ripped the implant out of his chest. Su Hao died a cruel death. nine0028
JOHNNY CAGE
Johnny Cage was fed up with writing the script for the new movie Mortal Kombat: The Death of Johnny Cage, in which his character repeatedly died and was reborn again. In real life, it was the opposite — he kicked ass! But his studio insisted on a dramatic development of the plot, and Johnny reluctantly agreed until the Thunder God Raiden called him to the Outworld for new adventures.
ENDING > Frustrated, Johnny Cage found a loophole and terminated his contract with MSM Studios during the filming of Mortal Kombat: The Death of Johnny Cage. With his own money, he began shooting a new film, which told about his new adventures in the Outside World. «Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance» broke every conceivable and unimaginable record in the box office in the first week, and made Johnny Cage extremely rich. The film was about how Johnny Cage saved the world from the threat of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung. nine0028
KANO
Kano was defeated by Special Forces agent Sonya Blade during Shao Kahn’s invasion of Earth. Shao Kahn imprisoned him, but later made him a general of his army when Kano saved him from an attack by Shiva, the Shokan warrior. Before the portal closed, Kano traveled to Outworld to gather the remaining troops for a final assault on Earthrealm.
ENDING > Keno and Sonya have fought before. Although Keno was losing, but now the result was different…
At Shang Tsung’s request, Kano seizes Quan Chi’s amulet. With this amulet, he gained immense power over the army. Even more than Shang Tsung. After luring Sonya into an ambush, he ended their long confrontation once and for all.
KENSHI
Hearing the screams of his slain ancestors, Kenshi vowed to kill Shang Tsung to get rid of their voices. When he learned that Shang Tsung had fled Outworld, Kenshi agreed to help Special Forces search for the missing agent Cyrax in order to get to Outworld.
