A surprise announcement followed Sony’s February State of Play and the FF7 Remake Intergrade news: there are two Final Fantasy 7-themed mobile games coming for iOS and Android…one of which is a battle royale, while the other is an abridged retelling of the original game. If you want Final Fantasy 7 on your phone with modern graphics, it’s coming.

But first, yes, Square Enix finally made a a Final Fantasy battle royale. Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier is ‘set in Midgar before the events of FFVII,’ according to the game’s description, and will be available worldwide sometime in 2021. The trailer shows players kitted in Soldier-like gear, firing guns and swinging swords at other players and classic FF baddies like Bombs and Ifrit.

The second game, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, is a sort of pint-sized remake of FF7 that looks to abbreviate the game’s plot into a series of highlights much Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition did. And like that adaptation, Ever Crisis will also feature cutesy versions of the FF7 cast (though they look more like they’ve passed through a Kingdom Hearts filter) in the overworld, but in battle, character models look straight out of FF7 Remake.

Oh, and Ever Crisis won’t just tell the story of Final Fantasy VII – it’s bundling in a compilation of moments from Advent Children, Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus. Sadly, you’ll have to wait a bit to play: Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is due out in 2022 for iOS and Android.

The big news for Final Fantasy 7 Remake fans is, of course, DLC and PS5 news, which was the finale announcement of Sony’s State of Play show.

In summary, the DLC, called Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, adds more story starring everyone’s favorite giant shuriken-wielding ninja, Yuffie, who’s come to Midgar in an adorable moogle coat to apparently steal materia. We got highlights and not much else, including exact release date or price, but at least we know more of what it’ll be about – and that it’s coming this year.

The DLC will be released alongside the PS5-enhanced version of FF7 Remake, and Sony showed off side-by-side footage of the game on PS4 and PS5. Not much has changed – the game still looks like it’s using the same models – but reflective lighting and particle effects have improved, loading times are faster, and there will be a photo mode, Sony promised. And the upgrade? Free.

Square Enix announced two mobile games set in the Final Fantasy VII universe today. One is a battle royale game aiming for a 2021 release, and the other is Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, a compilation of all the games and stories set in the Final Fantasy VII universe (Final Fantasy VII, Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, and Dirge of Cerberus). The latter is slated to launch sometime in 2022 on Android and iOS.

According to a press release, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is a chapter-structured single-player experience that covers the entire timeline in one of the most popular installments in Square Enix’s RPG franchise. The compilation will feature all the events from each game, in addition to new story elements focusing on the “origins of SOLDIER.”

In an interview with Weekly Famitsu, director Tetsuya Nomura strongly hints you’ll meet a younger Sephiroth: “it goes without saying that you will get to see the early days of a certain legendary hero when he was younger. ” He also says the game will be released in monthly installments, and will have a materia combat system more like the original game.

Watching the announcement trailer, Ever Crisis reminds me of Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, a 2018 title that served as an abridged version of the fifteenth main installment in the Final Fantasy series.

The description for the trailer on YouTube notes it is “another possibility for a remake,” and the visuals look greatly improved from the original version of Final Fantasy VII on the PlayStation, as pointed out by Twitter user Nibellion.

The announcement comes following news that Final Fantasy VII Remake is getting a PS5 patch on June 10th, which will include improvements that take advantage of the next-gen hardware as well as a new episode focusing on the character Yuffie.

Update, 8:50PM ET: Added details from the Famitsu interview, including that the game will be released in monthly chapters.

According to the number of fan breaks and unfulfilled expectations, publisher Square Enix has long taken pride of place, if not next to Konami , then somewhere in the neighborhood of Electronic Arts for sure. The company squeezes all the juice out of the property Eidos and is constantly unhappy with sales, but at the same time does not spare money for a team of mediocrity from the Japanese office. And if we somehow didn’t notice the portable version of the long-suffering Final Fantasy XV before, then recently we nevertheless paid attention to it.

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD is another attempt to make the last “Finalka” to bring in money. At one time, some insane amount of time and resources were spent on the project. Tetsuya Nomura’s original vision was corrupted by by Hajime Tabata , and the portable version is even more degraded. Based on the original FF15 , which has been greatly simplified. No open world — just a set of linear locations divided into ten chapters.

The plot itself has not changed, but the side quests have gone to the trash.

The story begins in the same place — on the road in the middle of the backwoods. Prince Noctis sits by a broken Regalia car with a group of friends in black suits. He goes to the kingdom of Tenebrae in order to be engaged to the local princess Luna and secure peace agreements with the empire of Niflheim, which is at war with the prince’s native kingdom. As in the original, all the most interesting events take place not in the game itself, but in a meaningless CGI movie, a cheap anime series, and so on. The fall of the city of Insomnia, the death of your father, the rebel guerrillas, the unrest in Niflheim, the epic battles — all this bypasses the player, forcing you to waste time on some nonsense.

In theory, the new king should organize resistance, but he sleeps, eats, constantly grumbles and plays the role of an errand boy. The existing set of events can be described as a circus with horses. The heroes behave like complete idiots: they walk in the company of imperials and accept help from the chancellor of the empire, Ardyn Izunia, on whose forehead it is written “I AM A VILLAIN”. The magnificent moments called “The hero dumps into paid DLC, which is not and will not be in this version,” have not gone away either. The story looks like the height of schizophrenia. A degree of absurdity is added by cutscenes that repeat the original ones with the utmost care. Considering the appearance of the characters and the environment, it all looks completely stupid and ridiculous.

The gameplay puts the player in very narrow corridor locations where a puppet theater is unfolding. All local characters look like badly cut wood with an axe, which do not show emotions. Or rather, from time to time Noctis’s eyes can become purple, and for a couple of characters they can even open and close. But 99% of the time you’re looking at dead faces.

The surroundings are also missing stars from the sky. Sometimes good landscapes come across, but loading of distant objects is constantly visible. Local cities look especially funny against the background of the residents’ remarks that “what kind of crowd is there”. It becomes very sad when you remember how PSP looked like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII . In addition, the gorgeous Final Fantasy X is now available on the Nintendo Switch , and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is coming soon. Both games look and play much better. If you want a game about chibiks, then for the same money a cute and interesting World of Final Fantasy is sold, which has slightly reduced textures and resolution compared to the versions on Xbox One and PS4 .

Fights differ little from the older version. Under control, we are given only Noctis, who is trained in the usual strike with melee weapons, a teleporting strike, as well as dodge and parry. The last two functions are hung on the same button, which is constantly confusing — you need to fit into the timing.

Yes, and the base hit causes problems. The fact is that attacks can be applied by simply holding the button, but the character begins to behave inappropriately, constantly falling into the 3D models of opponents. Because of this, you have to constantly hammer on the button.

In addition, there are several types of weapons to choose from that you can choose right during the battle: a sword, a spear, a two-handed sword. A magic ring will also appear later. However, the developers managed to disgrace themselves with the balance. A two-handed sword differs little from a one-handed sword in terms of damage, but at the same time it gives slow blows. Pumping does not solve this problem, so there is no point in using it.

The ring is no less stupid, because it can not be pumped, and forced to use it only in the ninth chapter, where we wander around the laboratory in Niflheim.

There are other complaints about the progression. For example, the ability to automatically dodge in the presence of mana for some reason does not work. Partners during the battle behave as stupidly as possible, constantly being exposed to blows and dying. However, they can be easily picked up, restoring some or all of their health.

Also, from time to time, we can give orders to our partners to carry out super strikes. It looks like this: at a random moment in time, a notification appears, and after pressing the button, the camera switches to a partner. At the same time, Noctis goes crazy: he begins to randomly teleport around the map. In general, these abilities evoke memories of Crisis Core and its notorious random roulette: just as chaotic and incomprehensible.

Magic does not improve the situation. Banks with elements can be scattered on the map, which are proposed to be immediately lowered onto nearby enemies. Keeping a charge makes no sense.

Visual overview based on the main features of the game and
is
addition to the main review.

With all the curvature of the controls, the battles are outrageously simple. Yes, enemies have area attacks and certain patterns, but it doesn’t affect anything. The hero shuts up any monster, and you have to drink potions only on bosses. In the entire game, I died only once — and then for the sake of sporting interest. There is no question of any interesting tactics and deep mechanics here.

Existing locations, in addition to the main quest, may have additional tasks: find a treasure, collect ingredients for cooking, find cactuar figurines… All this looks extremely tiring. You can’t even choose a specific dish.

Sometimes «stealth segments» are thrown at players. They look like a wry parody of MGS , only with Noctis teleporting around the arena.

At certain moments they let you control the Regalia. But the car travels only from point A to point B strictly in a straight line. The developers only allow you to tilt the car a little to the left / right, and also turn the camera. Once the Regalia is replaced with a chocobo, but there are practically no differences: the feathered beast can jump at the touch of a button or automatically.

Separately, I would like to note the weak soundtrack. Due to the sounds of the battle, the soundtrack is sometimes simply not audible. The translation into Russian is also not encouraging, which is teeming with errors and strong assumptions, which is noticeably dissonant with the English path.

Technically, everything is also very bad. When I first launched the game on the Nintendo Switch , I thought that it was stuck, because for several minutes (!) A black screen was displayed. In fact, it’s just such a loading … Moreover, when there is a transition between locations or switching from gameplay to a cutscene, the game freezes for a few seconds. Sometimes she just slows down.

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD is a burp from the gaming industry that exists because of Square Enix ‘s desire to make even more money from loyal fans. Something worthwhile could have come out of the game, but the problems of the older version were only multiplied by the total saving of resources. As a result, we have a lame monster, the value of which is to emphasize the absurdity of the nonsense that the Japanese screenwriters gave birth to.

Impressions of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade port on non-top PC — Hardware on DTF

Performance measurement cheating and forced dynamic resolution in a former PlayStation exclusive.

8796
views

On December 16, Final Fantasy VII Remake with the Intergrade expansion was released on the Epic Games Store. To test the quality of the port, we spent just over ten hours in it, eight of them with a static resolution mod.

Although the game, like the reference PC version of Days Gone, is made with Unreal Engine 4, the port has several notable problems. The remake works a lot better than the Horizon: Zero Dawn port, but weird graphics settings and constant micro-lag can still spoil the experience.

Tested on: PC with GTX 1650, 16 GB RAM and Intel Core i5-10300H.

Graphics settings and performance

The PC version of FFVII Remake was criticized at release for having few graphics options compared to other ports and PC games in general.

Where other games have dozens of presets for every aspect of the image, FFVII Remake is just a selection of high and low resolution textures and shadows. Even the annoying motion blur cannot be turned off. The FPS limit cannot be removed either, and there are only four options to choose from: 30, 60, 90 and 120 frames per second.

Focus on the fighter’s shoulder pad in the foreground. On high shadow settings in Full HD, they somehow look very sharp and much worse than in the console version

Moreover, the target frame rate makes the resolution slider useless, because in the port it is dynamic by default and always adjusts to the specified frame rate. Therefore, we indicated that we used the mod. And this despite the fact that there are no widescreen options on the list at all.

Moreover, the usual programs for measuring performance (for example, RivaTuner and Windows Game Bar) the game simply deceives, sometimes showing a higher FPS.

But in the port, you can choose the maximum number of characters on the screen and fine-tune HDR

The remake port produces unstable 45-50 FPS in Full HD without dynamic resolution at the highest graphics settings during cutscenes. When transitioning to gameplay, micro-lags are noticeable, which is why the cinematic seamlessness is no longer so impressive. But during the gameplay, the counter shows 50-70 frames per second, depending on the complexity of the scene.

But this frequency is unstable: FPS constantly jumps for a couple of frames in both directions, which makes it uncomfortable to play. Yes, and limiters at 90 and 120 frames per second are not needed with such performance — unless, of course, a constant image resolution is important to you.

When dynamic resolution is selected, the use of the counter loses all meaning, because the game always shows a strictly specified frequency in any situation. This kind of cheating is unfortunate to see in the first PC game that costs more worldwide than other AAA games. This pricing decision looks especially strange in light of how much criticism fell on Square Enix after the announcement of Forspoken’s price.

In fairness, a strong difference between the set and real resolution is noticeable only on the hair of the characters and when loading a new scene. Reduced picture quality is not noticeable

In the remake, the video card heats up much less than in the Days Gone port, while producing a more impressive picture. And the processor resources seem to be not required at all: it is usually only 10-15% busy, and even then in complex scenes with a large number of NPCs in the city.

Other oddities and port issues

The main inconvenience of the PC version of the gameplay is the control, sharpened to not use the mouse at all. It is needed only to control the camera, and all other actions in and out of combat are also tied to the keys.

The keys are assigned strangely. For example, the menu here opens not on the usual Esc, but on M, and the map opens on N. As if you need to keep your second hand over the free half of the keyboard all the time.

But there were almost no bugs in ten hours. The most frustrating of the found — broken textures in the fourth chapter, when Cloud and the team are preparing to distract the attention of enemies, and Jesse steals explosives.
