The game mode button showing Hardcore.
The key feature of Hardcore mode is that the player is not given the option to respawn upon death as they would in other game modes. Instead, there are two buttons on the death screen: «Spectate world» and «Title screen». «Spectate world» sets the player to Spectator mode and respawns the player at the world’s spawn point, making them able to view and explore the world only in that mode. The «Title screen» button simply leads the player to the main menu screen; re-opening the world simply returns the player back to the same death screen as before. Respawn anchors do not resurrect players in Hardcore mode.
In addition, Hardcore mode worlds are restricted to Hard difficulty, being the second key feature.
When creating a Hardcore mode world, the Enable Cheats and Bonus Chest world options are locked to OFF. On the world selection menu, Hardcore mode worlds display dark red text reading «Hardcore Mode!»
Hardcore mode is specific to worlds, not players; the variable determining whether the world is in Hardcore mode is saved in level.dat
. Thus, the player can use /gamemode creative
(if cheats are enabled) to set themselves to Creative mode. Players in Creative mode while on a Hardcore mode world still see Hardcore mode’s death screen upon death.
It is normally impossible to toggle Hardcore mode once the world has been created, though it is possible to use external programs such as NBTExplorer to change it by setting the hardcore
tag to either 1 (hardcore) or 0 (normal).
However, it is possible to enable cheats through the Open to LAN feature in the pause menu. From here, the player can, while spectating the world after death, type /gamemode survival
to bring themselves back to Survival mode, being able to play again by cheating death.
Hardcore also shows «Game over!» instead of «You died!», because of how when the game is over, the player doesn’t just die, but the Hardcore survival session will be over, switching to Spectator mode.
Multiplayer
Hardcore mode is an option for multiplayer, and its functions are similar to those in singleplayer. All players have Hardcore mode enabled — it is impossible to have some players in Hardcore and some not. Hardcore mode cannot be played in Realms.
Server operators can use the /gamemode
command to change the game mode of themselves or another player.

Trivia
The joke «ultra hardcore» button.
- When Notch announced Hardcore mode on Twitter, he jokingly posted an image of an ‘ultra hardcore’ mode where the premium status of the player’s account is revoked on death.[2] This is not to be confused with the custom gamemode of Ultra Hardcore, which was invented later.
- When a Hardcore mode world is loaded on a version released prior to Hardcore mode, the world is converted into a Survival world. Loading this world in a version featuring Hardcore mode does not revert the world back to Hardcore mode.
- A popular challenge used by servers is a map in which player(s) must survive for 100 days on Hardcore mode while completing certain tasks. These maps may have custom features.

all the life of the world. Either this? Read on as we show you how you can bypass the game lock and keep changing the game mode.
Why do I want to do this?
When you create a new world, you choose your game mode. You can choose from creative, survival and hardcore modes. Under normal circumstances, this choice is fixed, and a permanent flag is set in the world file. nine0003
However, Minecraft lends itself to creativity and play style changes, and you may find that the map you intend to create a creative map feels like it would be the perfect survival map, or vice versa. Or maybe you want to start in creative mode to build your home base and then switch to survival mode to survive in the world from the comfort of your newly built castle.
Whatever your motivation for changing the world type, it’s a fairly simple process. Let’s look at two methods, one temporary and one permanent, which you can use to change game modes. nine0003
Changing Game Modes with the Network Trick
This method may be old hat for some Minecraft players, but it’s worth noting as a very quick and easy method that you can use with no prior modifications or additional programs required at all.
Here we are in the survival test world we created for this tutorial. You can see hearts and a hungry meter above the experience and sash.
The world was marked as survival when we created it, and it will remain a survivor. nine0990 However, we can temporarily circumvent these rules by opening a LAN game for online play (even if we have no intention of playing with other players).
Press «ESC» to open the game menu and press «Open on LAN».
In the LAN World menu, the only important option for our purposes is to switch Allow Cheats to «On». Like the title, these are settings for other players, and if you change the game mode here, it will only change the game mode for incoming players to your LAN world. However, if you enable cheats, this applies to all players in the game (including you). Click «Start Online World» when you have cheats enabled. nine0003
Return to the game, press the «t» key to open the console console. Enter the command «/gamemode c» to change the game mode to ad. (If you want to return to Survival Mode, use the «/gamemode s» command.)
Note that the Lost Hearts, Hunger, and Meter have disappeared from the position bar. Despite the world flag in survival mode, we are now in creative mode.
You can use this trick to temporarily change the game mode of both survival and creative games. This trick can also be used to turn a hardcore game into a creative game. However, the interest in this trick in relation to hardcore mode is that hardcore mode (although we call it game mode) is actually a separate game flag. Hardcore mode is actually a survival mode where death causes the world to be deleted (so you only have one life to live in your hardcore world). Turning a hardcore game into a creative game creates a weird hybrid where you get all the powers that come with creative mode, but if you have to die in creative mode (either by hitting the void or using the /kill command on yourself) you will lose your world like this same as normal hardcore mode. We’ll show you how to toggle this later in the tutorial. nine0003
When you use this trick, you switch the game mode, but you don’t permanently switch the save world state (and using the multiplayer /defaultgamemode command doesn’t work correctly in single player worlds). To make a permanent and global change to the world, you will need to do some editing in the guts of the save file. Let’s look at it now.
Permanently changing the Minecraft game mode
To make permanent changes to the gamemode state, you need to edit the game’s level. dat file. Also, you need to use the same formatting that Minecraft uses: Named Binary Tag (NBT). nine0003
Installing NBTExplorer
Well-chosen for this purpose, NBTExplorer, a cross-platform tool available for Windows, Mac and Linux, is a specially designed tool for this task. You can learn more about the tool in the official Minecraft.net thread or visit the Github page; downloads are available for all three platforms from both links. You can run all three versions of the OS as a standalone portable application.
Notes: Backup worlds before editing them. Copy the entire save directory file to a safe location in case your edit goes wrong.
When you run the app for the first time, it will automatically load the default Minecraft save folder for your operating system. In the screenshot above you can see our two test worlds «NBT Test» and «NBT Test II».
Changing game mode
The first challenge world is a survival world. Let’s take a look at the values we need to change to permanently set them to declare mode. Choose the name of your world, in our case «NBT Test» and expand it. Inside the directory, you will see several entries. The one that contains the world rules is the level.dat entry at the bottom of the list. nine0003
Expand the level.dat entry and click Data. In this list of data, you will find an entry labeled GameType. While you can use keywords like «creative» or «c» to change modes when using the /gamemode command in a game, the GameType must be set with a numeric value. Here are the values you can use:
0 - Survival
1 - Creative
2 - Adventure
3 - Spectator
Our goal is to switch the world we have created from survival to creative so that we switch 0 to 1. Double click on the value and change it to the desired game value. Press CTRL+S or the save icon to save your edited tags.
Changing the player mode
If you have never entered the world you are editing before, you can skip this step. If you are logged into the world before you need to do one more edit. The save file remembers the state your player was in, even if you changed the world to a different mode your player will remain in the old mode. nine0003
You can fix this by using the Open-to-LAN trick we outlined above and using the /gamemode cheats yourself one last time to fix it, or you can do a quick edit in NBTExplorer. Navigate to NBTExplorer to your world and then to the «playerdata» subcategory.
Change the value in «playerGame Type» using the same values 0-4 as in the previous section. In order to switch the player mode to the application without having to use the in-game work, we need to change the «Player Type» value to 1. Again, make sure to CTRL + S or click the save icon to save your work. nine0003
Toggle Hardcore mode
In the previous section on using Open-to-LAN, we noted that if you used the creative survival mode trick in a world that was created with hardcore mode enabled, you would end up in something like a strange limbo where you had creative powers but you still lose your world if you die. Let’s see how you can turn off the hardcore mode (if you want to turn this world into a normal survival or creative world) or on (if you want to add some thrill to your life and turn the dead world into a day trip with excitement). nine0003
If we open the world’s level.dat file in NBTExplorer, we can see that the «hardcore» tag on our hardcore test world is set to «1», indicating that the world is in hardcore mode, even though we’ve set our player’s game mode (using the Open-to-LAN cheat) to be creative.
We can leave this setting as it is (and switch the player back to survival mode, recreate the hardcore mode experience), or we can switch this setting from «1» to «0», at which point the game will not be deleted when the player dies (regardless of whether the player dies in survival or creative mode). nine0003
While the point of hardcore mode is that, well, it’s hardcore, we certainly understand if you’re so attached to the world that you can’t help but think about losing it and want to transform it into a persistent survival or creative world.
