Minecraft Super Duper Graphics Pack too difficult for Mojang to complete — canceled – Leo Sigh

August 13, 2019

Michelle Topham

The Minecraft Super Duper Graphics Pack Mojang has been promising since way back in mid-2017 will not be released, the Swedish video game developer announced yesterday.

Because apparently releasing a pack with 4K visuals has just proved too difficult for the developer. Particularly when the graphics pack would be expected to work on every platform Minecraft can be played on.

“We realise this is disappointing to some of you – there was a lot of enthusiasm for Super Duper from inside and outside the studio – but unfortunately, we aren’t happy with how the pack performed across devices. For this reason, we’re stopping development on the pack, and looking into other ways for you to experience Minecraft with a new look.

Thanks for your patience, and sorry for not following through on our plans!”, said Mojang.

That being said, though, do notice what they finished that statement with. They are “looking into other ways for you to experience Minecraft with a new look”,

In other words, Mojang hasn’t given up on updating Minecraft graphics completely. They have only given up on the Minecraft Super Duper Graphics Pack. So it definitely sounds like something else will be coming down the road.

The Super Duper Graphics Pack was originally announced at E3 in 2017, with Mojang incredibly excited tat the time that they would be bringing 4K visuals to Minecraft. (You can find details about the pack on the Minecraft site).

They then will be as disappointed as the rest of us, if not more so, that their plans were not able to be completed.

With so many fabulous Minecraft mods available to give the game’s original graphics a huge polish, however, I doubt most of us will stay bummed for long.

Minecraft Super Duper 4K Graphics Pack Release Date, Delay, Pricing & More (Update) Mojang said they were «not happy» with its performance on all devices.

Unfortunately, it looks like Minecraft won’t be getting any improvements in Bedrock Edition anytime soon. But you can choose amazing shaders for PC Java Edition Minecraft.

Original article:

In 2017, Microsoft introduced the Minecraft 4K Super Duper graphics pack to bring great new visuals to the game’s famous blocky art style. The Super Duper graphics pack includes brand new shaders, lighting effects, new textures, and includes more detailed models, but hasn’t been implemented yet.

So what’s going on? Here’s what we know (so far).

Features

Microsoft was keen to emphasize that the Super Duper Graphics Pack is optional. While the free update will bring 4K and HDR support to the Xbox One X and Windows 10 PC versions of the games, the Super Duper Graphics Pack is an optional expansion that will change Minecraft’s iconic look and add a bit of modern flair. Here are some ways to improve the game.

  • Volumetric lighting.
  • Improved water textures, complete with reflective surfaces.
  • Dynamic shadows highlighting the edge of an object.
  • Reflective block textures, such as adding highlights to diamond blocks.
  • 3D models for objects that were previously just flat textures, such as railroad tracks and foliage.

pricing

While Minecraft for PC with Xbox One X and Windows 10 will get 4K and HDR features for free, the Super Duper Graphics Pack, which includes some more advanced features like volumetric lighting and texture updates, will be a paid add-on content. Walmart listed the Super Duper graphics package for $10 before the listing was taken down, so expect the price to be somewhere in that region.

Release Date: Super Duper Delayed

The Minecraft Super Duper graphics pack has been somewhat delayed, originally supposed to be released in 2017. This pack is being developed for Bedrock’s version of Minecraft, specifically for high-end Windows 10 and Xbox One X PCs. mobile devices and VR) had to be rewritten to support these new features.

Minecraft Developer is here. The graphics team is still hard at work on this (it ended up being a ton more work than originally thought). The graphics part of our engine was, to be honest, just not built for this, and when we tried to put all the new features piecemeal, things went badly. Performance, even on the Xbox One X, was between poor and inconsistent across all of our internal gaming sessions.

It will come, but we don’t have a date yet. The gameplay team has been hard at work on the Aquatic update and the rest of the Engine team has been working on the Switch release along with fixing performance issues on Xbox One. These fixes are much closer than Super Duper 🙂

So it looks like the Super Duper graphics package might not even parse it in 2018, maybe carry over to 2019. In short, don’t expect it anytime soon (at the time of writing). We will update you as soon as we know more.

Update April 26, 2019. We’ve checked into some of our sources on the Minecraft team and it looks like work is still in progress, however the project has evolved a little further than just a «graphics pack» and is done. requires a significant rewrite of the Bedrock graphics engine to accommodate features such as ray tracing. There is no scheduled launch date for Super Duper yet. We will try to get further clarification from Microsoft as soon as possible.

Worth the wait?

If the Super Duper graphics package looks the same as the original teaser video, I’d say it’s worth it. The features described in the video have only been available to PC gamers using Java Edition with mods up to this point, so for this kind of advanced visuals to be available in a broader sense, it would just be super .

The highly anticipated Minecraft Super-Duper 4K Graphics Pack has been canceled

A little over two years ago, Minecraft developer Mojang announced that Minecraft was getting an amazing, amazing, incredible graphics update. The new Super Duper Graphics Pack (we didn’t name it) was supposed to introduce a number of new graphics features, including 4K textures, water ripples, cleaner lines, a different lighting engine, dynamic shadows, edge highlighting, and directional lighting. A video showcasing these improvements was a backlash at E3 2017, and since then there have been occasional questions about when the update will be released.

Today, Mojang announced that the Super Duper Graphics Pack update has finally been cancelled. According to the company, «Super Duper was an ambitious initiative that brought a new look to Minecraft, but unfortunately the pack proved too technically complex to implement as planned.»

The only explanation why the company won’t provide an update is that «we are unhappy with the way the package works on different devices. For this reason, we are ceasing development of the pack and looking for other ways to experience Minecraft in a new way.»

This is a rather subtle explanation. First of all, we expected that such work — in particular, the work to determine which devices would be targets for Minecraft’s SDGP — would be typed before starting this project. Minecraft runs on a huge number of devices, but you generally don’t develop an extension like this without a goal in mind because (presumably) you’ll be testing updates on various systems while working with them. Finding two years later that you can’t justify upgrading because some products can’t run it if it’s true, that speaks to some pretty weird development priorities. Why don’t you finish updating or updating for systems that can?

SDGP required a complete rewrite of the Minecraft graphics engine. Such efforts are not trivial, and a complete overhaul does not take two years. But at the same time, what’s the point of not rewriting after two years of development?

It doesn’t make much sense. The Super Duper Graphics Pack was not meant to break Minecraft’s ability to run on older hardware; it was supposed to provide better image quality for machines capable of running it. The upcoming launch of a new generation console and the inevitable upgrade of the mobile treadmill should have provided a more reliable hardware platform for the game relative to 2017. Mojang and Microsoft jointly announced that Minecraft has sold 176 million copies as of May 2019of the year. The original PC version has sold 30 million copies. Microsoft continues to invest in Minecraft and complement it with add-on products such as the AR-focused Minecraft Earth. If any game could justify investing in a new graphics engine ten years after launch, it would be a title like Minecraft.

The most logical consequence of this is that Mojang has not been able to find a way to create an engine that both provides the top-level features it needs and still offers an acceptable level of performance on low-end hardware.
