How to Change the Game Mode in Minecraft at Any Time

• You can change game modes in Minecraft by using the /gamemode command.
• Switching your game mode to Creative removes the ability to get achievements in that save.
• Minecraft has four distinct game modes: Creative, Survival, Adventure, and Spectator.

If there’s one thing that everyone knows about Minecraft, it’s that it’s one of the most customizable games out there. From building new worlds to installing mods, you can do pretty much anything.

When you start a Minecraft game, you have to pick one of several game modes to play in — Survival, Creative, Adventure, or Spectator — and usually can’t change that game mode without erasing your file.

However, Minecraft’s customizability extends to its cheats, too. Using a console command called «/gamemode,» you can switch what kind of game you’re playing at any time. It is important to note that in order to use cheats, you’ll need to enable them.

Here’s how to use the /gamemode command in Minecraft.

Quick tip: If you want to switch game modes in an existing world that doesn’t have cheats turned on, load that world and press the Esc key to open the menu, then click Open to LAN. In the menu that opens, set «Allow Cheats» to On, and then click Start LAN World.

How to change Minecraft gamemode

1. Click or tap on the pause button.

3. Under the Personal Game Mode heading, select the dropdown option and choose the game mode that you wish to change to. You might receive a prompt warning about the disabling of achievements for that world. If this happens, tap Continue.

How to use the gamemode command in Minecraft

In the Java edition of Minecraft, changing game modes must be done using the chat. For Bedrock and other editions, it is optional.

1. Reference the above table and summon the chat box, where you can enter commands.

2. Type in /gamemode followed by a space, and the mode that you want to switch to (Creative, Survival, Adventure, or Spectator) that your platform supports, then hit the Enter key. So, for example, if you want to switch from Survival to Creative, you’ll type: /gamemode creative

Quick tip: You can’t use this trick to switch to Hardcore mode. The only way to switch an existing world to Hardcore mode is to use a third-party app to edit the game’s files.

How to use the Game Mode switcher

In 2020, Mojang added a new way to switch game modes for Java Edition players.

1. Press and hold F3.

2. While holding down F3, tap (and release) F4. A new menu will appear. From here, you can use either the mouse or tap F4, releasing F3 on the one you want to select, to switch game modes.

Quick tip: You can toggle between Spectator mode and back to whatever mode you were originally by pressing holding F3 and then pressing the N key.

What are the Minecraft Modes?

Minecraft has four modes: 

Survival

This is the most common Minecraft mode. Players can take damage (and die) and need to find resources in the world in order to craft food, weapons, and shelter.

Creative

This is the mode for all the builders. Players have access to infinite quantities of all the items and blocks in Minecraft. Mobs aren’t hostile – even the ender dragon is docile – and players are invincible.

Quick tip: In Creative mode, players can break bedrock. If you do though, be careful as you can fall out of the world and die as a result.

Adventure

In Adventure mode, players are unable to place or break blocks — but they are still otherwise subject to the same conditions as they are in Survival mode.

Spectator

In Spectator mode, players control a camera that can go – and see – through solid blocks. They aren’t a part of the game world and cannot die; they also cannot be seen by other players unless they are in spectator mode as well.

Note: Online multiplayer minigames on Minecraft servers frequently make use of this mode if a player dies in survival mode so that they can spectate the rest of the minigame.

Minecraft remains an incredibly popular game among players of all ages and experience. This is due to the cohesive status of the community and updates to various versions of the game. A simple search can reveal many wonderful and impressive creations made by Minecraft players over the years. Many of them were created by players block by block, others were created in the creative mode of the game.

One thing that players can access in Minecraft depending on the server is the game console. This allows players to enter console commands and cheats that can affect players and the world around them. Here are some of the best ones to use. nine0005

Block cloning

Some blocks in Minecraft are rarer than others. This can make building some Minecraft projects a little rough if players run out of certain material. However, there is a cheat that allows players to clone any existing block they have.

This cheat is available for players using Java Edition, Pocket Edition, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10 Edition and Education Edition. It cannot be used on the Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii U versions of the game.

Although the cheat is capable of cloning individual blocks, it can also clone entire areas. Players can also decide if they want the cloned regions to include air or blocks with a specific filename.

Cheat code to be inserted into the console to clone a specific region: «/clone [replace¦masked] [normal¦force¦move]».

To use this code, players will need to replace «begin» with the start coordinates of the region they wish to clone. Players will then need to replace «end» with the coordinates for the end of the region. «Destination» will be replaced by the coordinates of the place where players want to see the clone. nine0005

The «replace» and «mask» options allow players to choose which one to include in the code. «Replace» will clone all selected blocks, including air, while «masked» will not include air.

Finally, players can choose between ‘normal’, ‘forced’ or ‘move’. «Normal» will cause the clone to be a regular clone, where blocks are copied from one region to another. «Force» will force the clone to replace existing blocks in case the clone’s destination overlaps with the original location. «Move» will instead move the original blocks to the clone’s location and leave nothing but air. nine0005

If players are using Minecraft Java Edition on PC or Mac with versions 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, 1.11 and 1.12, the clone command is different. Instead, the console command looks like this:

• «/clone [maskMode] [cloneMode] [tileName] [tileData]».

The things that need to be changed in this code are the same as normal code cloning. In this case, «x1», «y1», and «z1» are the start coordinates of the area, and «x2», «y2», and «z2» are the end coordinates of the cloned area. Then «x», «y» and «z» are the coordinates of the target area for the clone to spawn. nine0005

For «maskMode» players can choose between «replace», «mask» or «filter». If you select this option, the «replace» and «mask» functions will be the same as in the source code. If players select «filtered», only blocks that match «tileName» specified by the player later in the code.

From «cloneMode» players can choose between «normal», «force» and «move» input. These commands behave the same as in the source code. nine0005

Once players get to «tileName» , they can either delete the tile or replace it with the name of the block they want to clone exclusively from the source region if the mask mode is set to filter. The same can be said for «tileData» , except players will need to enter a block data value.

Cloning certain block types is not limited to the previously mentioned Minecraft Java Editions. In other versions, the console command looks like this: «/clone filter» with the usual replacements remaining the same as before with the source code and tile specifications from the second code.

Set the time of day

It can be difficult for players in the early parts of the Minecraft world to survive at night. This is due to the lack of lights, food and beds, which some players may suffer from. To prevent monsters from attacking early on, players can use cheat codes to set the time of day.

This cheat is available in all versions of Minecraft except Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U. As with the previous case, players need to enable cheats in their world for it to work. nine0005

Because the command is simple, players just need to type «/time set day» into the Minecraft console. This will automatically set the time of day, allowing players not to worry about zombies and skeletons in the world.
