Metal gear solid 5 the phantom pain multiplayer: THE PHANTOM PAIN General Discussions

Every Multiplayer Metal Gear Game

Despite consisting of primarily singleplayer games, the Metal Gear series hasn’t hesitated to pursue various multiplayer ventures since it launched over 30 years ago. It should go without saying that many of these efforts lack the scripted, cinematic flair seen in the games’ campaigns, as such an element isn’t easily emulated online.

Many of these games try to adapt Metal Gear‘s intense stealth-action gameplay to a multiplayer environment with varying levels of success. They’re not all winners, but the series’ consistent attempts at multiplayer over the years have given rise to a few diamonds in the rough.

Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel

This hidden gem exclusive to the Game Boy Color is among the best Metal Gear spin-offs out there, and it was also the first to introduce multiplayer to the series. Players could use a link cable to engage in versus battles, where two Snakes could duke it out, not unlike the climax of the first Metal Gear Solid game.

Metal Gear Acid/Acid 2

Metal Gear Acid and its sequel are notable for being some of the few instances where the Metal Gear series has branched out into an entirely different genre. This duology of turn-based tactical games allowed two players to face off in Link Battles, where each player is tasked with collecting a set amount of items faster than their opponent can, all while staying under enemies’ radars.

Metal Gear Online 1

The Subsistence re-release of Metal Gear Solid 3 saw the inclusion of a behind-the-back camera that would go on to revolutionize how players viewed Snake, literally. However, the game also included a brand new online mode: Metal Gear Online. Players could take each other on in traditional multiplayer game types with gameplay functionally identical to MGS3. The servers for this game were eventually taken down ahead of the launch of MGO’s sequel, which came packed in with Metal Gear Solid 4.

Portable Ops/Portable Ops Plus

The Metal Gear Solid series’ first outing for Sony’s iconic handheld system made an apparent effort to emulate the gameplay of MGS3, right down to including a multiplayer mode. Players recruit soldiers in the singleplayer campaign that they can use in the game’s online mode, but there’s a catch.

Depending on the ruleset being used, should one’s soldier die, players run the risk of losing said individual forever. Players can also interact with each other through more civil means, such as trading soldiers like Pokemon. An expansion, Portable Ops Plus, was later released for the PSP, which featured even more playable characters like Raiden, Old Snake, and a young version of Colonel Roy Campbell.

Metal Gear Online 2

Debatably the most well-known iteration of MGO, Metal Gear Online 2 came packaged with MGS4, and like its predecessor, plays very similarly to the game it’s bundled with. The game boasts myriad improvements over MGO1. For starters, the controls this time around are more in line with what one might expect from a multiplayer third-person shooter, making the gameplay much smoother than before. Furthermore, the available game types are much more varied; Sneaking Mission casts one player as Snake against a team of players out to get him, while Stealth Deathmatch is nearly identical to a Battle Royale, just on a much smaller scale.

Players are also afforded a greater degree of choice when it comes to who they play as, as one can customize their avatar with a variety of stylish and/or silly cosmetics, as well as outfit them with various skills and specialties to make their own unique Metal Gear character. MGO2’s servers were unfortunately shut down back in 2012, but fan-run servers have since launched to keep this fondly remembered multiplayer Metal Gear game available for all to play.

Peace Walker

This entry is a first for the franchise in many regards. It’s the first mainline Metal Gear title directed by Hideo Kojima to launch on a handheld, it introduces many of the core ideas regarding base management that would go on to permeate the remainder of the series, and it’s also the first to feature cooperative multiplayer. A squad of up to four players can take on the game’s various challenges, which certainly helps balance things out when it comes to the bullet-sponge boss battles. More familiar multiplayer modes like team deathmatch and capture the flag are present, too.

Metal Gear Arcade

This Japan-exclusive Metal Gear title brought the action of Metal Gear Online to a VR-equipped arcade cabinet, which also makes this the series’ first foray into virtual reality. However, the game has since been shut down after failing to strike a chord with Japanese audiences. What footage exists of this title showcases gameplay similar to that of MGO2 and MGS4albeit significantly less refined.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

The final game in the main Metal Gear saga took the base building mechanics of Peace Walker one step further by allowing players to invade each other’s forward operating bases (FOB). Successfully invading one’s FOB didn’t just net players another tally in the “win” column, but also rewarded them with various in-game resources that could be used to further strengthen one’s own base. But should an infiltrator be caught by the base’s defenses, players could come face to face with the base’s leader, who is controlled by another player.

Metal Gear Online 3

A tale as old as time, Metal Gear Online 3 was included with Metal Gear Solid 5, and borrows heavily from the mainline title. Like its immediate predecessor, it features highly customizable characters, various weapon load-outs, and locations modeled after areas from the single-player game. However, besides a few new modes and additions like drivable in-game mechs, the jump from MGO2 to this version isn’t all that impressive, especially considering the game’s lack of prolonged post-launch developer support compared to the prior iteration.

Metal Gear Survive

The first Metal Gear game following series creator Hideo Kojima’s split from Konami saw former members of Big Boss’ private army fighting against hordes of zombies. Yes, this is a Metal Gear game. This entry marked the series’ first cooperative outing since Peace Walker, but its reception wasn’t quite as warm. Survive is commonly regarded as one of the worst games in the series not only due to its inexplicably large departure from the series’ roots, but also because of how poorly said departure was executed.

The Phantom Pain December Update Changes Multiplayer Abilities, Rewards Beginner Players

By
Steven Santana

Konami has revealed details surrounding the December update for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, to be implemented today on all systems except the Xbox 360. No reason was given for the cause of the delay, but Xbox 360 owners will have to wait some time before this update is active on their versions.

A new event is providing incentive to those who have not yet gotten past Episode 22. From December 17, 2015 to January 19, 2016, those who complete certain missions up to, and including, Episode 22 will obtain massive GMP rewards, listed in full below.

  • Completed Episode 5: [500,000 GMP] & [R&D Team S+ Staff] x2
  • Completed Episode 10: [1,000,000 GMP] & [Support Unit S+ Staff] x2
  • Completed Episode 15: [3,500,000 GMP] & [Base Development Unit S+ Staff] x2 & [Medical Team S+ Staff] x2
  • Completed Episode 20: [5,000,000 GMP] & [Intel Team S+ Staff] x2
  • Completed Episode 22: [Combat Unit S+ Staff] x4

Metal Gear Online will now be running on version 1.02 which introduces various changes to the abilities used in multiplayer. WEAPONS+ Lv.3, which allows for 2 primary weapons, was unintentionally nerfed by the Infiltrator class’ removal of a back weapon. To make up for this, the ability now has increased reload speed. LETHAL AIM+ Lv.3 and NON-LETHAL AIM+ Lv.3 used to have increased reload speed as a bonus to their abilities, but have now been replaced with increased firing stability. STEALTH CAMO+ Lv.3 now allows players to maintain the same movement speed and requires more time to be marked by an enemy. Lastly, with SHIELD+ you can now aim your weapon during a dash attack to cancel the action.

A new option has been added in the Control Settings/Game Settings page called «Game Type to Start» which allows you to boot up MGSV directly into the multiplayer instead of having to load and launch from single player. Konami ends the update by promising more DLC to come, and details on a survival mode that is not the usual «take on waves of enemies,» but instead a matchmaking type requiring set teams.

In single player some new FOB updates have also been added. You can now place security cameras and mines in custom locations throughout your FOB. A new FOB mission has been added where you engage the Skulls Unit. Raiden and Cyborg Ninja costumes are now available to be worn during FOB missions. A Challenge Task List, advanced player FOB missions, grade 9 weapons, event points, nameplate customization, colors and patterns for FOBs, emblems, and a fourth unlockable FOB have also been added to the single player game. Don’t forget to access the FOB features you will need to be connected to the online servers.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain — release date, estimates, system requirements, official site This is a sequel to

Metal Gear Solid V : Ground Zeroes , the events of which are in 1984. Mercenary leader Venom Snake will travel to Africa and Afghanistan during the Soviet war to exact revenge on the people who destroyed his subordinates in the previous game.

Gameplay

Protagonist Venom Snake, also known as Big Boss, operates in a large number of open levels. The gameplay has changed little from Ground Zeroes : the player must make their way around the world while avoiding detection. Snake’s equipment may include binoculars, maps, pistols, assault rifles, and explosives. The player can traverse the world in vehicles such as cars and tanks, as well as on horseback and on foot. In some mountainous locations, you can climb the rocks in search of a shortcut. The protagonist can use the help of a combat helicopter and send scouts to the target area. Snake also has AI-controlled companions: a female Quiet soldier and a trained DD wolf. Companions’ abilities and effectiveness depend on their relationship with the player.

Like Peace Walker , the game contains a building feature that allows you to develop weapons and items in your base. For the purpose of construction, the hiring of enemy soldiers and prisoners was returned to the game. There was an option to access the database through your own smartphone or other device. Unlike Peace Walker , where the player could only see the Main or «mother» base from the air, Snake can now explore the base on foot. The Fulton surface-to-air recovery system has been returned. With it, the player can transport captured soldiers, animals, vehicles, and other objects to the main base. Money to upgrade the main base can be obtained from diamonds and shipping containers found throughout the map.

Enemy intelligence improved in regards to situational awareness. If the player often successfully uses a certain weapon or tactic, when they repeat the mission, they will see that there are more enemies and their weapons have improved. So, frequent headshots force the enemy to purchase helmets.

Hideo Kojima announced that the game will have a new day-night cycle; it will work in real time, and the time of arrival at a particular location will depend on the transport used by the protagonist. Time data will allow the player to analyze the movement of marked enemy forces, such as security patrols. The gameplay will also be affected by weather conditions: sandstorms, rain, etc.

A new direction in game design will allow you to choose the order in which story events develop; the player will be free to choose missions in any order, but «in any case, by the end of the game he will understand the main message.»

Kojima spoke about the limited nature of the previous games in the series: «the player had to go from point A to point B, while having some degree of freedom during the passage.» In Phantom Pain, the design is radically different, the player is offered new ways to move and stealth, for example, you can get to the mission by plane, helicopter or motorcycle. According to Famitsu magazine, Konami has confirmed that Phantom Pain’s game world is 200 times bigger than World Ground Zeroes , contains a variety of climatic environments and conditions. Those who have previously played Ground Zeroes will be able to import their data into Phantom Pain to get special perks.

Multiplayer

The game will be part of the new Metal Gear Online, developed by the new Los Angeles division of Kojima Productions. The first video with multiplayer was shown on December 5, 2014.

Scene

After the events of Ground Zeroes and the destruction of Snake’s private military company MSF in the early 1970s, Snake fell into a coma. 9 years pass and he wakes up. Snake begins helping run a new mercenary group, the Diamond Dogs. Hiding under the code name «Venom Snake», he is serving in Afghanistan during the Soviet war. His goal is to track down the person responsible for the destruction of MSF. At the same time, he meets his former rival Ocelot and meets a unit of warriors deprived of their past, present and future. Initially, the protagonist and Kazuhira «Kaz» Miller only go for revenge. But soon Snake unearths information about the Cipher organization’s conspiracy («Cipher» or «Cypher»), which consists in developing weapons that can suppress the potential of the Metal Gear system itself.

Characters

Unlike previous games, Kojima Productions recorded the voices and movements of the English-speaking actors and stuntmen first. For the first time in the series, shooting for facial animation was applied. The Japanese voice acting was overdubbed over the English one, and not vice versa as before.

On June 6, 2013, at Konami’s annual E3 show, it was revealed that actor Kiefer Sutherland would voice Snake and do motion capture work for the game. David Hayter, who wrote Snake’s English voice in previous games, was not cast in Metal Gear Solid V. Sutherland was better suited to the role of someone who genuinely mimics the facial and vocal qualities of a man in his forties.

Development

In February 2012, Development Without Borders, owned by Konami, announced the development of a new Metal Gear game. The site was looking for staff to participate in the GDC pavilion in March 2012. Later in 2012, screenshots and videos of the new Fox engine appeared, though not related to the Metal Gear series. In some screenshots, however, a character resembling Big Boss was shown.

Ground Zeroes stage

The game was announced on August 30, 2012 under the title «Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes». The public presentation of the game took place at the Penny Arcade Expo. Director Hideo Kojima has confirmed that Big Boss will remain the game’s protagonist, while Ground Zeroes will be the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V. The game is the first title to be powered by the Fox Engine, Kojima Productions’ proprietary engine. In January 2013, Kojima revealed that the game would include Arabic subtitles for the first time in the series, and revealed that cutscenes were being reduced in length as he considered long cutscenes to be obsolete.

In an interview with VG247, Kojima expressed concern about the possibility of Ground Zeroes being released. Kojima noted that he wants to touch on taboo and serious topics, which he considers «quite risky», and added that his functions as creator and producer conflict with each other. As a creator, Kojima wanted to explore topics that might turn off audiences, and as a producer, he wanted to tone down the content in order to sell as many copies of the game as possible. In the end, the creator won, and Kojima called the development approach «creativity over sales.»

The Phantom Pain stage

At the Spike Video Game Awards in December 2012, a trailer for The Phantom Pain, created by the new Swedish company Moby Dick Studio, was shown. The trailer was 100% gameplay. The mission of the studio, ostensibly led by Joachim Mogren, was to create an uncompromising, addictive and addictive game for people all over the planet. After the presentation, rumors began to appear in various publications that The Phantom Pain is a game from the 9009 series.4 Metal Gear . The similarities between the protagonist and Big Boss were pointed out, graphics reminiscent of the Fox engine, the quote «V expected» from the end of the trailer, the ability to fit the title «Metal Gear Solid V» into the empty space of the trailer. In addition, the name «Joakim» was an anagram of «Kojima», the site’s studio domain name registered 2 weeks before the announcement, and several people wearing Moby Dick Studio T-shirts sat in the VIP area for Konami employees. Kojima jokingly stated that he was impressed with the trailer and that Mogren was inspired by Metal Gear’s style.

The actor playing the heavily bandaged Mogren appeared in an interview on GameTrailers TV on March 14, 2013. Stating that he couldn’t reveal much, he said that more information about The Phantom Pain should be expected at the upcoming Game Developers conference and showed some screenshots on his iPad. But when show host Geoff Keighley pointed out the Fox Engine logo in the screenshots, Mogren got nervous and the segment cut short.

On March 27, 2013, at the Game Developers conference, Kojima officially confirmed that the mentioned trailer was made by his studio, and announced that two separate games will be released under the name Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes , the prologue to the main game, and the main game of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Kojima then presented the trailer and showed the merits of the Fox engine. The trailer featured the song «Not Your Kind of People» from Garbage’s self-titled album.

Further development

While the game was launched on PC in the announcement trailer, it was slated for release on 7th and 8th generation consoles. In an interview at E3 2013, Kojima commented on a PC release: «We’re making it.» However, he made it clear that a PC port was not a priority. Kojima confirmed that the graphics from the trailer are close to the original game. He also stated that Metal Gear Solid V will be his last game in the 9 franchise.0003 Metal Gear . Although the trailer shows Snake suffering from hallucinations while in the form of a burning whale, Kojima assured that the game would be balanced in terms of realism.

On June 10, 2013, at E3, the fourth trailer for the game was shown. It demonstrated new gameplay mechanics and character composition. On June 11, the trailer was posted on Konami’s official Youtube channel in a standard version and an extended adult version.

Trailers for Metal Gear Solid V were shown on computers, but Kojima said that the textures and character models in them are based on 7th generation consoles, that is, PS3 and X360. For the next generation of consoles, the developers set their sights on improving the technical aspects of the game.

Kojima wanted the player to feel connected to Snake. Therefore, the loss of the main base, which the player created in Peace Walker , serves as a motivation for revenge for himself, and not just for Snake. Weapons, vehicles and other equipment in the game are fictional and unlicensed, exactly as in Ground Zeroes . In the previous parts of the series, mostly weapons from the real world are used.

On June 9, 2014, the fifth trailer was shown at E3. Some details about the «Diamond Dogs» became known in it. At the same time, new information and images appeared on the official Metal Gear Solid V website, such as how the game map was developed in comparison to the rest of the series, and Snake’s design evolution throughout the games.
