Marvel vs. Capcom 2 — Gambling

In 1994, Capcom released the cult fighting game X-Men: Children of the Atom for the then advanced arcade platform CPS-2 (Capcom Play System). Developing the ideas of X-Men, the authors invented the concept of the game, which involves characters from different universes. To begin with, the X-men collided head-on with the heroes of Street Fighter. Then there was a fighting game about popular Marvel superheroes. The series turned out to be very successful, and its most striking representative was, perhaps, the 2000 mega-hit Marvel vs. Capcom 2, re-released nine years later for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Unlike Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, here characters are thrown into battle for no reason (the less you will have to listen to inappropriate explanations about how Liu Kang was resurrected and what kind of brother Sub-Zero is). Moreover, it is definitely an impossible task to drive more than fifty characters under the common banner.

The line-up has gathered — there is nowhere more elite: Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Darkstalkers stars, baby Mega Man from the series of the same name and X-men in a fairly large number. Jill Valentine from Resident Evil also came to support her comrades. A total of 56 characters — enough for everyone and for a long time.

Capcom wouldn’t be Capcom if it abandoned its most successful invention, the X-Men: Children of the Atom combat system. This time it was greatly expanded and complicated: for example, three characters fight for each side in a round. This gives rise to many funny tricks: attempts to catch a half-dead enemy with an ultra combo so that he does not have time to escape to the bench, joint attacks, and even entering the ring with the whole team at once.

The notorious ultra-combos form the basis of the combat system — single attacks will not achieve anything here. But on the way to the heights of MvC2, console players will face several difficulties. Firstly, even for an overwhelmed hadoken (the simplest Ryu fireball, if anyone remembers), you need to scroll the analog stick. Not to mention more complicated things like Zangief’s throws, when the instruction calls for «rotate 720 degrees counterclockwise» — the PS3 and Xbox 360 gamepads have a hard time with such feints. Plus, to carry out super attacks, you have to hold down two buttons: for example, «weak punch» and «weak kick. » Therefore, it is advisable to purchase a special six-button «pad» for fighting games — with it, by the way, it is much more fun in Street Fighter 4.

The age of MvC2 is primarily given by animation — half of the fighters are transferred unchanged from the games of the era of 64 megabytes of memory. Compared to the «smooth» Guilty Gear, and especially the latest King of Fighters, the hits and combos are way too jerky. Technologically, the game has remained in the last century, except that three-dimensional elements appeared on the backgrounds: bells, windmills.

And yet! Large sprites of fighters look luxurious both now and ten years ago. Each character has its own uniqueness. Venom (the sworn enemy of Spider-Man) appears in the arena in human form, and during the battle he is gradually enveloped in black goo. Jill Valentine calls on the help of Dobermans, Ravens and even Nemesis from the third part of Resident Evil. During the battle in the arena, madness is going on: missile strikes from the sky, giant mech robots, raids of wild animals — like in an episode from a children’s anime. The screen is cut through by flashes of light, laser beams, and in the end there is almost an atomic explosion, but the duel continues as if nothing had happened.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is the pinnacle of 2D fighting. The game has absorbed all the experience, all the best developments in the genre over the years of its development. The spectacle, thanks to which videos from the final of Street Fighter gain hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube, is not even built into a cube — into an absolute.

  • Complex, deep and interesting combat system
  • A huge number of characters familiar from childhood
  • 2D sprites on HD screen are not smooth
  • Difficulty of mastering

What opportunities open up in a three-on-three battle?

How does the presence of complex combos diversify the gameplay?

Did MvC2 cave in to the times or stay true to the old school?

THESE AND MANY OTHER QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED IN THE DETAILED REVIEW OF MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2 IN GAMBLING LITE #09/2009.
