Mario Kart is one of Nintendo’s all-time great racing games and it’s clear how much the company loves the series.

Not only has Nintendo remade Mario Kart 8, but they’ve also added a hefty DLC booster pack to the game too. On top of this Nintendo has in recent years released the ‘Mario Kart Tour’ mobile game, and the ‘Live: Home Circuit’ mixed reality game. So it’s clear how much stock Nintendo places in this franchise, so we imagine they’ll take their time to make sure the next outing is another fantastic must-buy.

For now, though, we’re still waiting to see where Nintendo takes the game next. Read on for everything we know so far.

Latest News & Leaks

There’s no sign of Mario Kart 9, but at least Nintendo is giving fans Wave 2 of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass.

That means 8 new courses to enjoy for this incredible 5-year-old game.

Some believe we could see a Nintendo Direct next week and whilst it’s not official yet, there’s a good chance it could happen. An email was shared via the GamingLeaksAndRumours Reddit thread and deemed legitimate by the moderators.

This would make sense, after all, it is ‘E3 month’ or whatever we deem E3 to be in June these days.

Does this mean we’ll see a new Mario Kart? That’s up for debate but we can always hope.

Somewhat unexpectedly Nintendo has announced a rather significant expansion to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with the addition go 48 remastered courses from the entire Mario Kart series. All six waves will be released by the end of 2023, so we doubt we’ll be getting Mario Kart 9 anytime soon.

According to one industry analyst, Mario Kart 9 is currently in “active development” and will have a new twist to the formula. The speculation surrounding the game comes from Tokyo-based industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto, who was writing his predictions for the upcoming year for Gamesindustry.biz.

According to @Newmarkomaro on Twitter, we could see some major changes with the next Mario Kart game. Take it with a pinch of salt for the time being though.

“The main idea and the best way to describe it was like an MK x Smash Bros with a big focus in the online community with lots of weekly stuff to do and new ways to race (not just Karts and bikes) and new ways to take down other racers.”

“The thing is, after the insane sales for MK8D (and still selling like hot cakes) Nintendo decided to not release it on the Switch and use it as a launch title for the next console as the “New Mario Kart” even when this game wasn’t supposed to be a Mario Kart at the beginning.

“Not sure how much of this original content will survive at the end but will be cool if they still go to the “N. All Stars” route. See you next year for new info!”

Release Date

Mario Kart 8 was released May, 29, 2014, so we’re fast approaching the 8 year anniversary mark for the game and prior to 2022 you’d have probably said that we were due a new release. Not least given that the game was already remade for Nintendo Switch and released on April 28th, 2017.

Previously we would have suggested that a new Mari Kart game could be due around 2023, however, the announcement for the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass has thrown fans a massive curveball.

The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass launches as standalone DLC and as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. There ar going to be six waves released, each including eight courses that can be played locally and online. All six waves will be released by the end of 2023.

As such, you’d have to imagine that we definitely won’t be seeing a new Mario Kart 9 game until 2024, at the very earliest. In some ways, this would be quite fitting, with Mario Kart 8 turning 10 in the same year.

Characters

Obviously, with Mario Kart 9 not having been announced just yet, it’s impossible to say for certain which characters will be available in the next game. Where is ‘Mario Kart 9’?

Is a gamer out there who is unfamiliar with the Mario Kart franchise? Putting the Italian plumber and his friends in karts has proven a lucrative side-line for Nintendo since the first game was released in 1992 – it’s a fun game for friends and family that is easy to pick up, yet difficult to master. A new Mario Kart title has appeared on almost every subsequent console, although there is one major exception – the Nintendo Switch, which instead boosts a Deluxe version of the Wii U’s Mario Kart 8. So where, an increasing number of players are asking, is Mario Kart 9?

First, a little context. Mario Kart 8 was released on the Wii U in 2014, and it swiftly proved a critical and commercial success. It shifted more than eight million units, making it the console’s best-selling game. The issue, however, was that the Wii U itself was not particularly popular, selling an underwhelming 13.56 million units worldwide. Come the release of the Switch, then, Nintendo saw the opportunity in re-mastering and re-releasing the game – it was one of the launch tentpoles, and any dissatisfaction at seeing a familiar game was vastly outweighed by mass-audience enthusiasm. As someone who owned both games, the Switch version is more fun and features more content.

The game sold incredibly well – it’s the best-selling Switch title and, between the Wii U and Switch versions, the seventh best-selling game of all time, currently at 55. 2 million units. This factor has made Nintendo very reluctant to move on with a new game – why would it bother, when 8 Deluxe is proving such a hit? Any new instalment on Switch would split sales, and there’s no financial logic in doing that.

Still, it had been eight years since the release of a new Mario Kart, so surely some new content should be on the way? It was, but not quite how fans anticipated. In February, Nintendo announced the forthcoming release of the ‘Booster Course Pass’, 48 DLC tracks that will gradually be added to the game in waves through to the end of 2023. Most will be tracks from older instalments, although we’ve seen one new entry, Sky High Sundae. It’s exciting news for players of 8 Deluxe, attracting even more players with the promise of fresh and regular new content, but it has essentially killed the hopes of seeing a new instalment any time soon.

The likeliest outcome now will be the release of Mario Kart 9 on whatever the next Nintendo console is. We know that the game is in development, and industry analyst Serkan Toto of Kantan Games suggests that a similar approach of making it a major launch game is the likely strategy. However, Nintendo faces a difficulty when it comes to the next game – what else can it offer, given the wealth of material in 8 Deluxe? Every game in the series has offered a new twist on the formula, some variation or refinement to make the experience different from the predecessors. But given 8 Deluxe’s success, it’s hard to imagine what changes could be made (that said, who saw anti-gravity coming, so don’t put it past Nintendo).

As Toto states: “Mario Kart 8 is so well made, that it might even be a victim of its own success. I heard that apparently, Nintendo came up with a new idea for Mario Kart 9. I think that they need a little bit of a reboot for Mario Kart 9. I’m not saying that Nintendo is rebooting the series, but what I’m trying to say is, I think they need a new angle for the series. I think that Mario Kart 9 actually has to offer something new because just a rehash of Mario Kart 8 is probably not going to cut it for Nintendo.”

Mario Kart 9 is in active development

Nintendo is developing a new game in the Mario Kart series. A well-known analyst believes that the game will be announced in 2022.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released in 2017 and has been hugely popular ever since. According to last year’s figures, over 38 million copies of the game have been sold. It is the most popular product of the Nintendo Switch console.

The game is still in high demand, but the head of the analytical agency Kantan Games Inc. and an expert on the Japanese segment of the gaming industry with the nickname Dr. Serkan Toto told GamesIndustry about his 2022 predictions.

The specialist confirmed that while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling well, Mario Kart 9 is in active development. In his opinion, the product should enter the market with a «new twist», and the Japanese can publish the first teaser in 2022.

We can expect the game to hit the market in the coming months, but it’s entirely possible that Mario Kart 9 won’t be a surprise from Nintendo until next year.

5 things we’d like to see in Mario Kart 9

New details have surfaced that a new Mario Kart is in active development, including Mario Kart 9 . This sparked a lot of discussion online about what the series has in store for the future. The fans have started their engines and want to start the promotional train on their way to the destination of the new Mario Kart game. Also, with any new game in the franchise, there is a debate based on what features the latest installment might bring to a particular series. This article will introduce you to a list of five things we would like to see in the upcoming Mario Kart 9 .

New Mario Kart Characters

The Mario Kart series is renowned for its iconic set of racetrack-ripping characters that players have come to know and adore. Whether you’re playing as Mario, Luna, Peach, or even Bowser, you’re sure to love watching the characters sit in their iconic cars and race for first place as if their very existence depends on it. Maybe it is… who knows…? There were 36 characters in total. Mario Kart 8 however, 6 of them were only available if you purchased the various DLC packs for them.

One special thing that would be nice to see in the next installment is an even more diverse set of characters that will join the Mario Kart realm. Where is Kirby on the list? Samus? Even Star Fox? There are plenty of Nintendo characters that haven’t made it to the Mario Kart roster yet, and it’ll be nice to know if any new characters will be added. Mario Kart 9 . Featuring The Metroid Horror is doing its best, it’s possible that we won’t see Samus in the next part.

New cards with unique elements — Race to Perfection

Mario Kart 8 included many cards that offered players something new. One such feature was anti-gravity driving, where players could turn their car into a gravity-defying machine as they drifted around ceilings and knocked other racers on the track to throw them off the track or simply gain more speed.

The maps have been adapted to include a number of dynamic changes throughout the course. There were sections under water, sections in the air and even more; all these inclusions kept things fresh, and also resembled Mario Kart 7 . In a future part, it would be great to see the continuation of these features, as well as add something new again. Whether it’s a vehicle change or drastic map changes that are memorable and keep players on their toes. Either way, brand new maps on top of fan-favorite maps will be great to see added to the game.

Items in abundance! Adding New Elements to the Mix

Any Mario Kart game would be incomplete without electrifying items strewn across the racetracks. Where riders will drastically change lanes to get them or push others off the track if they think they’re going to pick them up. These items really have the power to make a difference in racing, and one blue shell has been the cause of many first place victories. Mario Kart 8 includes four new items: Piranha Plant, Crazy Eight, Boomerang Flower, and Super Horn.

With four items added to the previous installment, it’s likely that players will be able to get even more items on the tracks this time around. Some fans have been looking for items such as the ice flower from the Mario series, which would freeze racers on the track and make them move slower for a short time until the ice thawed. any players with an ice flower in their hands that can be used.

New online modes — go to the competition

It is noteworthy that many players love to compete in multiplayer modes in Mario Kart 8 . Players could take part in a large number of different maps and modes, as well as add a few unique ones. The standard multiplayer racing modes were, of course, also meant for players to spend time in.

In the next part, it would be interesting to see even more multiplayer modes. There have been rumors in the community that perhaps another type of battle royale could be added to the list of modes to Mario Kar t also gets its fair share of battle royale action. In any case, the inclusion of modes that have not been in any of the parts before, would be a great addition to all multiplayer games. Mario Kart fans.

Complete Story Campaign — Mario Kart 9 could be the template for a new campaign

One feature that fans have been asking for for a long time is an established «Story Mode» where players can immerse themselves in the game. Mario Kart knowledge and gain a lot of experience in completing potential story missions. If this were added to Mario Kart 9, it could be an excellent storytelling, weaving throughout, that would create more interest in the series’ universal lore and, in addition, offer players something new.

There might even be a type of story similar to Super Smash Brothers or where a certain cast of characters would have to use the skills they know for the tracks in a new way.
