Remastered versions of Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 now on PC and console

In a surprise announcement Tuesday, publisher 2K made remastered versions of two games in the critically acclaimed Mafia trilogy available for immediate download. The news comes less than one week after the announcement of an upgraded version of all three games in the series, which are being sold together under the title Mafia: Trilogy.

Both Mafia 2: Definitive Edition and Mafia 3: Definitive Edition are available now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam for those who pre-order Mafia: Trilogy prior to Aug. 28. Additionally, players who already own the original versions of those games on certain platforms will be granted immediate access to the new versions on those platforms. The offer also includes free and discounted add-on content for both titles.

Meanwhile, Mafia: Definitive Edition won’t be available until the Aug. 28 release date. Tuesday’s announcement was also accompanied by new trailers for all three games.

“Mafia II: Definitive Edition will be automatically granted to all existing owners of Mafia II on Steam today at no additional cost,” 2K said Tuesday in a news release. “Additionally, all existing Mafia III owners on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam will be upgraded to Mafia III: Definitive Edition today at no additional cost. Customers who own a combination of titles will receive special reduced-price upgrade offers to complete their trilogy via in-game menus within each of the Mafia titles.”

Lieutenants are also the people who you can put in charge of various hideouts captured around the city. These buildings will provide different bonuses based upon who is running them, so there’s a slight management element to it all. Retaliation attacks from opposing gangs are a constant threat, so you’ll need to be prepared to defend your outposts from the syndicate.

Mission to mission you can expect the tried-and-trusted combination of high-speed vehicular pursuits and ear-splitting shooting. Mafia 3 also puts heavy emphasis on hand-to-hand combat, with a variety of truly brutal take-down moves that will have you weeping into your keyboard. Knifing someone repeatedly in the face is just another day in the life of Lincoln Clay, as we discovered when we saw Mafia 3 at Gamescom 2015.

The One Way Road trailer gives us the best look at Mafia 3, at least in terms of its narrative design. It looks like once again we’ll be seeing a story told with plenty of slick and glossy cutscenes, all with a distinctly HBO vibe.

Following on from that trailer is this E3 video, giving a further glimpse at Lincoln’s life as he returns home from Vietnam to a world of crime.

Mafia III is not bad. She’s too uneven. Something in it is done perfectly, something is frankly terrible. Individually, almost every one of its shortcomings could be forgiven, but Hangar 13 hit the jackpot: primitive tasks, lopsided stealth, bugs, at times — an ugly picture. Songs from this game are better to listen to separately. The history here is definitely not worth the dozens of hours of routine torture (certainly not at that price). And not particularly impressive endings can be safely viewed on YouTube. It would be better if it was a completely hopeless game: then it would not be so insulting. Alas, if someone here killed the mafia, it certainly wasn’t Lincoln Clay.

They can not bully themselves in order to understand whether the plot is worth such sacrifices and whether it will get better further. Alas, the main ailment of the avenger cannot be cured with an additional strip of health — he is diabolically lacking a normally prescribed character, so all attempts by scriptwriters and directors to arrange a drama have gone down the drain. Mafia 3 really wants to show an exciting cinematic story… and can’t. Yes, somewhere in a huge pile of repetitive «grind» tasks, good dialogues and beautiful videos with the participation of other characters lurk, but what’s the point if the main role is a silent idol, almost devoid of personality traits? Ten minutes before the finale, the developers will remember that they have a DIFFERENT story about revenge here, and will force us to make a couple of choices in order to stick an appropriate label on the hero. Mafia III could well turn out to be a good game, because it has all the ingredients for success: a good picture, an excellent plot, nice game mechanics, a colorful city, and a mind-blowing soundtrack. But all this crushes a boring gameplay. I can’t help thinking that the developers were making a nice but short game with a lot of side quests. But at some point, external forces intervened and asked to bring all the side effects inside to increase the time for the campaign. So, this decision was disgusting and inglorious. As a result, it’s hard to recommend the game to newcomers or fans of the series, but it’s not so sinful to take the game at a big discount. At least for the sake of a great first hour of the game.

Mafia 3 is not a perfect game, but it can be enjoyed. All the developers who worked on the Mafia series never understood what Rockstar’s sandboxes were all about. And the thing is that everything that is there is an application to the open world. When Red Dead Redemption came out, almost everyone excitedly told how they spat on quests and sat in mini-games all day long. In the latest GTA, you can waste time on a bunch of nonsense, despite the fact that there is a brilliant script and cool characters. You can’t say the same about Mafia 3. It gives the player a lot of plot, but if you spit on it, then there is nothing to do. The world is empty. The world is dead. With such views, it was necessary to make a linear shooter (you see, there would be fewer bugs). This, of course, is not fashionable, but the game itself would have turned out better.

In technical terms, the game is inferior to its predecessors in all respects, except, perhaps, graphics. Interaction with the environment was minimized, the problem of racial discrimination was not disclosed and brought to the caricature KKK and the lengthy discussions of the villains about the place of the Nigers in the White Society, and other significant events of that time are mentioned in passing. What can we say — the topic of the assassination of Martin Luther King only flashed a couple of times in the dialogues, and the death of Kennedy, in which the boss of the Italian mafia of New Orleans was suspected of being involved, is practically not talked about until the very end of the game (by the way, during the credits do not leave away from the monitor).

However, both of these ideas failed miserably, because in the first case, the enemy only does what he rushes at you with a brainless crowd, occasionally guessing to dive into cover, and in the second, he doesn’t notice the two-meter kid point-blank, he just has to burrow in the shadows (and not jokes about skin color are needed here!). And these are only those shortcomings that are worthy of mention. A bunch of minor flaws like impenetrable «concrete» bushes, broken scripts and crashes (even on consoles) will accompany those who decide to go through the third part of the «Mafia» to the end. And it’s strange — Hangar 13 could make a really interesting game: the story missions turned out to be good, and the topic of inequality really deserves attention. However, for some reason, the studio added annoying business takeovers and no less stupid side tasks related to assistants, which reduced their own efforts to almost nothing. As a result, it turned out like with the original Assassin’s Creed — the developers came up with more or less working mechanics, but forgot about the main thing: the player should not be allowed to be bored by filling him with the same type of assignments. Unfortunately, Mafia 3 plunged into the murky waters of monotony, where it was eaten by predatory monotonous tasks.

Of course, the new part of Mafia makes a sharp castling, which may not please the fans of the series. However, this does not make the game bad. In the introduction, the topic of projects without pretensions to an ideal was touched upon not by chance. Mafia III is just being a good game, with no claims of genius or ambition to be the best. This is not a masterpiece, not a breakthrough in the genre, but you can happily spend a dozen or two hours behind it. It’s disappointing that this isn’t a continuation of the same series that so many people love. If the game had a different name, nothing would have changed. Watching the credits, you catch yourself thinking that you want to see all the elements of the Mafia 3 gameplay in excellent performance somewhere else. A racket sim like The Godfather 2, open-world stealth from MGS5, or nice car physics like Forza Horizon 3.

Even after numerous patches, when Mafia III becomes a good game (not a good one, just a good one), it still won’t move into the ranks of projects that are required to be reviewed. By skipping the adventures of Lincoln Clay, you have nothing to lose, even if you are a fan of the series. Especially if you are a fan of the series. But if you renounce the serious heritage that its name imposes on the game, it becomes a shame for the project. This is an interesting raw material, which, if properly processed, could well become a presentable decoration of the gaming year. That’s just to talk about at least another year of diligent sculpting — only by that time the development could be of interest to the modern (already more demanding) audience. The release of Mafia III in its current form is a hack.

You usually go to the goal over dozens of corpses, and this can be done in two ways: explosions and shooting or stealth. The covert passage is easier: the shooting is somewhat crooked, and the hero dies easily. But to strangle enemies is not a problem. Opponents are stupid, almost always walk alone and easily fall into traps. Passers-by behave strangely: they react to gang fights with shouts, but they do not call the police. If you hook or rob a mere mortal, then the witness of the crime will immediately run to call the cops. It can be intercepted, but then there will be even more witnesses. If you deal with them, then the rest will subside (not always, however) and go about their business.

To say such a language does not turn, and yet this is not Mafia. It’s a great story, spread across a ugly and shaky sandbox, but not a game that could be called the successor to the great gangster duology. And definitely not the kind of game that you want to replay. Well, at least not before the developers add a «Story Missions Only» mode to keep things to the point and no water in between. And to relive 30 hours of faceless missions for the sake of a couple of interesting ones — no, hardly. There are already enough such openworlds in a year.

Mafia III turned out to be very controversial. The developers obviously overdid it with the same type of tasks, and as a result, the game about betrayal and revenge turned into a game about the monotonous seizure of territories. It is interesting only at the beginning and at the end, and in the middle — dozens of hours of identical missions. On the other hand, Hangar 13 definitely managed to capture the spirit of the late 60s. The game has a beautiful and diverse city, cool classic cars and an equally cool selection of licensed music. Yes, the third part did not live up to expectations, but it also has a lot of positive moments that can keep you on the screen until the very end.

Mafia showdowns are, of course, cool. But, gentlemen, developers, you can’t show such a clear preference for consoles! Didn’t the history of the last Batman part with scandals, massive returns and the temporary closure of the Steam page teach you anything? The PC optimization in Mafia 3 is just awful, and we’re not even talking about the numerous glitches that have become a cause for neighing for the entire Internet.

Mafia III is a dubious sandbox game that can take up a lot of your time, but its virtues are hidden behind a heavy make-up of flaws. Monotony, monotonous tasks, far-fetched racism at the beginning and forgotten by the middle of the story, boring side missions and flat characters, as well as long journeys from point to point overshadow the excellent production, bright scenes and the brutal reprisals of a black guy over an Italian syndicate. Mafia III is playable, but only if you’re a big fan of the genre. In all other cases, the already noticeably outdated GTA V is quite enough.

The hope for a triumphant return of the cult game turned out to be buried under a pile of technical problems at the start, overshadowed by controversial graphic performance and secondary plot. On the other hand, the original The City of Lost Heaven took a long time to achieve cult status, and most of Mafia III’s problems aren’t so deep that they can’t be fixed. I hope that 2K will have such a desire, and we already have an exciting story and good gameplay. The question of whether Mafia III is worth the money that they ask for it on Steam, everyone will decide for himself.

MAFIA 3 could do with at least another year in development — at the moment it is a terribly raw, empty and monotonous clone of mid-2000s GTA, with an original setting and a mountain of untapped potential. To a large extent, a routine and monotonous action game, boring in the open world, but narrated damn well. But surprisingly, Mafia III, for all its shortcomings, is a game that you want to return to. I have not studied everything in it yet, I still have a bunch of unfinished side tasks, and therefore every day since the release, as soon as I turn on the PlayStation 4, I immediately plunge into the world of the Mafia. Because I was hooked on this world, this story, and I want to feel like Lincoln Clay a little more before I send the game disc to the shelf. So, although this part of the Mafia cannot be called a masterpiece and a breakthrough compared to previous games, and there are quite a lot of objective shortcomings in it, the advantages, in the form of an atmosphere, competent presentation, colorful characters and an interesting storyline, outweigh. And so the project is definitely worth your attention.

Mafia III — another part of the criminal action game with an open world. This time the game takes place in the city of New Bordeaux (New Orleans), which is mired in corruption, criminal showdowns, drugs and illegal gambling. Gangs settle scores with each other in broad daylight, in the very center of the city, because the police do not want and cannot oppose anything. The player will take on the role of Lincoln Clay, a dark-skinned guy who returned home from the Vietnam War. Being an orphan, the hero finds a new family in criminal circles, but later his new friends set him up and throw him to death. But Clay was not destined to die. After recovering from the blow, he vows to take revenge at all costs. This time, the developers of Mafia III have significantly improved the in-game world — now it can be safely called open. The player can complete side missions, capture the territories controlled by other gangs, participate in races and improve the car. In addition, the storyline of Mafia III will answer the remaining questions from the previous part of the game.
