Lords of the Fallen (Fallen Lords) — cool RPG

Category: Miscellaneous

RPG co-production of German Deck 13 Interactive and Polish City Interactive. Action from the 3rd person in a fantasy style. It was released on October 28, on November 5 an annoying bug was fixed, as a result of which the hero ended up in an abyss and could not get out of there.

Plot

The main character’s name is Harkin; he gets out of prison (his former mentor helps him in this) — and almost immediately he is forced to fight in the arena with one of the Lords. Having won, Harkin replenishes the supply of magical potions and sets off to look for his mentor, and at the same time — to save the world.

From whom? From the returned ancient deity and the monsters he brought, called horns: the knights cannot cope with the demons, and therefore it was decided to release the prisoners branded for their misdeeds from prison. Once upon a time, humanity, eradicating the «darkness within itself», practically rejected these people convicted of committing «acts not according to conscience», and now it cannot do without their help.

The hero and his companion, the monk Kaslo, arrive at the monastery, which is the last stronghold of humanity.

Gameplay

The game world consists of 2 zones: the temple and the dimension where the rogues came from. The maps are quite confusing, it is easy to get lost in them. You will learn about where to go next from the scrolls that are scattered throughout the game world.

Armor is very important: heavy armor allows you to go ahead, but significantly slows down the movement of the hero, and at the same time lowers his stamina. By the way, it generally needs to be monitored, because in some cases it can decrease rapidly.

Light armor protects quite well. Weapons should be chosen depending on who you are going to use them against.

Monster behavior should be analyzed. Checkpoints are crystals — there you will save and replenish your stock of potions, and at the same time invest experience in pumping. Try to find the vulnerability of each monster (we’ll tell you: the solution is far from always trivial).

However, if you pass by the crystal, you can almost win more, because you will find more rare and useful things, and in addition, you will accumulate more experience (which you can lose in one fell swoop — if you spend experience or die).

That is, you yourself must choose a strategy: give preference to a tit in hand (experience is collected a little bit, but it is saved) or a crane in the sky (you can get everything at once — or in the same way you can lose everything at once).

Game features

  • Very high quality drawing of armor; Generally good detail.
  • Successfully implemented fights.
  • For each lunge, you should choose the right moment — in this case, it is possible to create chains of combos.
  • A large number of secret passages.
  • There are non-obvious tasks.
  • Spells are poorly balanced.
  • There is no multiplayer game.

System requirements

2-core Intel 2.66 GHz or faster, 25 GB or more disk space, at least 6 GB RAM, graphics card with a minimum of 1 GB memory and DirectX version 11 support.

Bungie’s forgotten work.

Myth The Fallen Lords

Background

Studio Bungie began its existence in 1991 in Chicago. It was founded by two students of the University of Chicago: Jason Jones (Jason Jones) and Alex Seropian (Alex Seropian). Originally Bungie was a hobbyist video game developer for the Macintosh.

In the words of Jason Jones himself : — «The Macintosh had a more mainstream influence in the technology market, and I was a Mac OS programmer, by the way» .

The very word «Bungie» is a joke. Until now, there are stories that the name of the studio is associated with a comic story that we may someday find out.

For my first 9years of existence, the Bungie studio created 2 franchises that brought them immense popularity ( Oni and Myth ), as a result of which the studio was acquired by Microsoft . The reason for this was their new project — Halo . After this deal, Bungie began to release primarily «first-person-shooter». Although in fact Halo could not have been a shooter at all, but a strategy from the very beginning, like Myth . Our today’s story is about the first part of the unique strategy game.

World of Myth

A more accurate strategy genre Myth The Fallen Lords – RTT (Real Time Tactics). The key feature is the lack of building and hiring troops, as it is, for example, in Warcraft and Age of Empires .
Myth is a dark fantasy world in which there is a war with the Fallen Lords, the ancient heroes of the Kath Bruig empire that has existed for 1000 years (in the prequel Myth 3 The Wolf Age ) before the events of Myth The Fallen Lords .

Fallen Lords are heroes who previously became famous for their deeds for the glory of the empire and the harmony of the human race (well, the gnomes too). There is a legend about the «Comet». Once every 50 years, a «Comet» flies over the world of the living, which appoints one of the chosen heroes as the Equalizer. The task of the Equalizer is to exterminate all living races on earth and resume the «Cycle of Life and Death» in the right direction, i.e. to raise an army of the dead from the earth and arrange some kind of Apocalypse or Ragnarok.

Fallen Lords total 5:

1. Balor — aka Connacht Wolf, aka Emperor Kath Bruig. The greatest hero to defeat Moagim, the main antagonist of Myth 3 The Wolf Age (actually not the main one). In Myth The Fallen Lords, he is represented as Balor, who is also the Equalist. All Fallen Lords obey him.

2. Damas — aka Soulblighter (Soulblighter), the main antagonist of the sequel to Myth 2 Soulblighter (the most successful and still playable part of the series). Presented as Balor’s personal general. Ruthless and the most tenacious of all his predecessors.

3. Shiver — she is Ravanna. There is really nothing to say about her, only that she has the most terrifying appearance, relative to other Lords. Ravanna herself was the warrior Myrmidon. Myrmidons are ancient warriors of the Twelve Dunes deserts. There is an artifact — a mirror of Tramist, destroying which you can defeat Shiver.

4. Unholy — he is Mirdred, he is a traitor. Perhaps one of the weakest Fallen Lords after his death. He betrays both the forces of «Light» and the forces of «Darkness», but he cannot receive any benefit for himself in any case. One of the playable characters in Myth 2 Soulblighter.

5. Observer — aka Bahl’Lal. One of the most powerful necromancers in the universe. Was defeated by the Unclean during the events of Myth 3 The Wolf Age.

Of course, the race of people, northerners and gnomes, as well as residents of the Fir’Bolg people (it’s hard to tell who they are) do not want to die from the race of the dead. I had to take up arms and go to war. To war with Fallen Lords , and yet people have no leaders, no heroes, no troops. Exhausted from years of war, all the remaining forces of the «Light» entrust their fate to the so-called Avatars, powerful wizards who must stop the Fallen Lords (feeling the cycle again?).
There were 9 Avatars. Of these, only 3 remained alive: Alric, Rabikan and Maeldun.

*Additionally: Mirdred aka Unholy, is also an Avatar, but Fallen. During the events of Myth The Fallen Lords , he is the Fallen Lord. After his death, in Myth 2 Soulblighter , he is the revived Avatar of the «Light» forces. (Analogue of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings)

We won’t go into details since the history of series Myth actually has very deep roots. And yes, more and more parts could be released, but, alas, Bungie sold their rights to the (*drumroll*) Take 2 Interactive series. No part of the Myth series is sold anywhere. The only thing that Bungie has done that is unusual is that it gave away its source code ( Source code ) to two modding communities: Project Magma and MythDevelopers (the latter have sunk into the waters of obscurity, and the former are still working on the game, releasing the game on modern platforms: Win7, Win10, Mac OS, Linux).

This is where the war begins, lasting 25 solo levels (which can be completed by 16 players at the same time). The whole plot is told from the perspective of an unknown soldier who went through the entire war from beginning to end, through cutscenes with images and professionally voiced text.
It is very difficult to call the world of the Myth series limited, because, looking at the world map alone, you can imagine the scale and scope of the player’s imagination, who will visit it.

Color card created by Jago Dakari . Clearly shows that the world of Myth is not so small as you might think.

The key feature of the world Myth is the atmosphere of death. In the game you will not have large armies, organized units and outside support. On the front line you will have only a small detachment of different types of units that you will have to manage and protect each of them.

Scale Myth are both huge and small at the same time. Subversive warfare is what you basically have to do. You will not be able to arrange a big massacre, since in most cases you can lose everyone and everything. The enemy forces always exceed you by 2 times, 3 times, or even 4 times! The player is tasked with saving each of his warriors for the next level, because with each level the situation of the war is aggravated. But the correct use of weather conditions, terrain, your equipment for warriors is the key to victory in any battle.

The basis of the game

In 1997, of course, there were not enough high-tech programs, computers and tools. The tricks used by the developers from Bungie can only be surprised.
Myth The Fallen Lords uses the so-called Physics Engine.
The entire toolkit is the two official Fear & Loathing tools (tag-editor and mesh-editor).

Third party software used Adobe Photoshop plus coding software Physics engine .

The technology of building the game itself is very similar to working in modern game engines or editors, but is in no way inferior to ideas for modern developers who could use it in the future.

The whole point was simple, namely:

“A map of the area was drawn in a graphics editor (for example, Photoshop). It was a flat image, i.e. axes X and Y. Using brushes or improvised textures, a simple level map was drawn, with mountains (everything matched its color), rivers, fields and roads. Next, a graphic image in .bmp format was imported into Loathing (mesh-editor), and then, perhaps, the most familiar to developers is the creation of a height grid. Simple manipulation of a flat image turns the game plane into a real terrain map with mountains, plains and rivers.

Fear (tag-editor) is the second tool that mainly edits game file tags. Edits: texts, sounds, images, colors, animations, effects, scripts.

In terms of technology, Myth gave an incredible leap in the strategy genre. Myth The Fallen Lords is the first computer strategy using 3d terrain. But not everything is so simple, and here’s why.

Myth is not a fully 3d game per se. The technology of working on heights and other elements gave an excellent leap, which, by the way, was used by the notorious Creative Assembly thanks to which we now have the Total War series. The physics engine did them good and based on Myth The Fallen Lords came Shogun: Total War .

Actually Myth The Fallen Lords is a 2. 5d strategy. There are some interesting facts about this. For 1997, it was quite problematic to work in a 3d environment and space. The possibilities are not the same. What a creative approach was chosen for: landscape — in 3d, objects — in 2d.

Frame-by-frame Sprite 2d animation of Berserk unit running (Myth 2). Oak by Project Magma

Screenshot from Myth 2 Soulblighter showing units and environment objects as animated (except trees) 2d objects solution) in which 2d images (objects) are rotated towards the player under the degree relative to which the player’s camera is located. On the first screenshot, frame animation of the Berserk unit clearly shows Frame (they are also frames), View (aka a review under a degree). Each animation was tied to its own timeline, thanks to which it was possible to ensure a smooth transition from one position to another.

What did it allow in the end? Such an interesting combination of 2d and 3d solved a lot of problems and issues:
* Issues of optimization and conflicts of full 3d for 1997 were resolved;
* Complete freedom was given to artists and designers to achieve a pleasing picture for 1997 years;
* Your own unique style;
* In the future, this greatly affected the Mod building part.

*note: This article contains screenshots from Myth 2 Soulblighter. Since Myth The Fallen Lords is technically outdated, there is no way to collect real materials. Examples are from the second part of the series. Both games use the same game engine.

Videos

Special attention should be paid to cutscenes. Despite their small number, as soon as the briefing of the next level ends and the video starts, you immediately feel an atmospheric wave and that the next level will not be easy at all, since they appeared only in rather nervous and not easy levels:

Audio and Sound

In 1996, Bungie was joined by Martin O’Donnell (Martin O’donnell) and his colleague Michael Salvatore (Michael Salvatori). You’ve probably heard of these people, especially their soundtrack for the Halo games. Now listen to one of the soundtracks for Myth The Fallen Lords and you will understand everything:

Only Ambient (environment sounds) is used in the gameplay. This is done in order to immerse the player in complete silence (in addition to the sounds occurring nearby).

Immersion in war

No matter how strange it sounds, but the player in the world of Myth The Fallen Lords manages to immerse himself in the war entirely. Each of your and the enemy fighter is not just a combat unit, but a warrior who actually has his own name, experience and the number of battles fought. The forces of «Light» and the forces of «Darkness» have an impressive list of combat units on the battlefield. The list is not complete, but these are the main units on the battlefield:

Small icons may not say much, but great concept art from the artist Bungie Juan Ramirez (Juan Ramirez) are great to give an idea of who you have to fight:

The key feature is still physics. Rain, wind, slope and other physical obstacles dramatically affect the outcome of any battle or skirmish during the passage.
