Logitech G502 HERO mouse review. Intergalactic Ranger

The Logitech G502 is now in its third iteration in its history. Initially, it was just a G502 Proteus Core model with a single-color backlight, then it was renamed the G502 Proteus Spectrum and added RGB backlighting with a few minor changes (concerning, in particular, work on user feedback, thanks to which a more flexible cable appeared in it), and this one once done everything at once. And they listened to the users, and put the most perfect filling. To clarify a couple of details: this mouse is unique in nature, and it will be very difficult to find an alternative to it. This is the first. Secondly, with the installation of a new sensor, the need to support the old model has disappeared, so the novelty will soon outlive its predecessor from the market, becoming the only current model. So if you are looking for a multi-button novelty, then the Logitech G502 HERO looks now as attractive as possible.

And it really has a lot of buttons! As many as 11 pieces fall at the disposal of the user, one has only to pull the mouse out of the box. The most important advantage is that, gradually improving the technical parameters of the mouse, its basis remained unshakable: the shape was not touched, the materials were also preserved, recognizable features were preserved and, in general, its design was left without any noticeable changes. Maybe somewhere the tone and shade of the materials have, of course, changed, but even remembering past models, this is quite difficult to track. Therefore, Logitech has not parted with the futuristic design of its mice for many years now, and in this case, the geometry and fragmentation of the device looks like an elegant visual solution. Only the logo on the back has changed — now it matches the current corporate identity.

On the one hand, this is good. But on the other hand, the practicality of the device went under the knife. Dust and dirt collect all these charms simply at a breathtaking speed. In fact, if you look at practicality in terms of tenacity, then everything is not bad here: rubber pads with a textured surface, matte tenacious plastic on the back of the mouse and on the main buttons, however … When it comes to a bunch of small glossy inserts that are dotted with the whole mouse is literally from top to bottom, it’s better not to remember practicality.

And here the only thing that pleases me is the preservation of the previous functionality of the mouse. In particular — a chip with an inertial wheel that rotates at a frantic speed and is simply created for scrolling through pages or scrolling through news on social networks. Controversial solutions have also been preserved — for example, the sniper button on the left sidebar, which, on the one hand, is convenient because it is located near the thumb, but due to the not very large size of the mouse, it can easily fall under the distribution, and then a false actuation. Alas, my thumb, with an average palm size (18.5 cm), was constantly poking this button, and I can’t say that this always happened on purpose. As well as a solution with the preservation of the compartment for weights.

This, and the no-wireless solution, just boggles my mind. On the one hand, I understand that the transition of the G502 model to a more advanced sensor is a great opportunity to keep the device in service with the most up-to-date stuffing, but some anachronistic solutions should be a thing of the past. Not only does the Logitech G502 HERO mouse itself weigh 121 grams — which is a lot by today’s standards — but with an energy-saving sensor, the mouse has no wireless technology at all. It would seem that it was possible to abandon the compartment with weights, and to place a small-capacity battery in the saved space, which would ideally fit in conjunction with the HERO sensor, and thus the mouse would receive remarkable autonomy in the region of a week, but . .. Instead, we observe a pack with weights, which allows you to increase the weight of the mouse by 18 grams. So the prioritization in terms of the need for certain features in the case of the G502 is not entirely clear to me. It is clear that the G502 is not an eSports mouse, but still, no one canceled the wireless amenities. Moreover, some people directly declare that they love Logitech and take this particular mouse for convenient work on a PC.

Anyway, the Logitech G502 cable has long been legendary: it has always been a thick and awkward sausage. In the case of the G502 HERO, the situation has changed markedly for the better, but I would gladly sacrifice the weights and part with the wire in order to get a wireless model that is not burdened by such a cable. Like many of us, presumably. The cable for the Logitech G502 HERO mouse has lost a bit of weight and acquired lightness and softness, which is very important for any wired mouse, but still it is far from the same weightless cables manufactured by Razer. Another controversial decision is the presence of a huge number of scattered Teflon glides, some of which are almost hexagonal in shape, which makes it very difficult to find a similar set if it needs to be replaced. But here the excellent Logitech service comes to the rescue, which will always help you figure it out with the mouse, and send a set of new glide by mail. This, by the way, is one of the reasons why there is nothing else in the complete boxes: only a mouse and pieces of paper. And everything else can always be obtained through the warranty department, and in this kind of service from Logitech is close to ideal.

However, behind all these nuances, you forget about the main thing — the form. And the shape of the mouse is simply excellent. Designed as a spoof of symmetry with a slim waist and ergonomic button layout, it’s the perfect tool for almost any hand. Quite elongated, not too tall, not too sloping and almost not humpbacked, it will fit almost any palm, but it is most convenient to hold the mouse with a palm-claw or palm-finger grip. A full-fledged palm grip is impossible here due to the narrowness of the shape and due to the presence of a sniper button, and a finger grip will be hampered by a very noticeable mass of the device. Not to say that this mouse has grip limitations, just with its versatility, it has its own nuances that you should pay attention to so as not to experience discomfort later.

Much more noticeable changes have been made to the filling. And now we are not only talking about the HERO optical sensor, which provides a fabulous resolution from 100 to 16,000 dpi with the ability to adjust the dpi step to 50. And not about its sky-high technical parameters, where the speed is 400 ips, and acceleration is 40 g. No. Here, even the buttons feel differently — Logitech has always been very good in this area. But in this model, they put Omron switches for 50 million clicks, which is why the mouse turned out to be extremely reliable, and the main buttons are pressed easily, briefly and clearly. The wheel, as it was, remains flawless, and it is built on an indestructible optical encoder. In inertial scrolling mode, it, of course, does not make any sounds, and in the mode with fixed cutoffs when scrolling, it pretty cracks when scrolling. But the step-by-step cutoffs of the wheel are very soft, tangible and accurate. And, by the way, unlike similar models (like the same G Pro Wireless), the wheel was not made hollow to lighten the device — everything has remained unchanged since the very first version of this mouse.

The software has not changed either. The user now has the Logitech G Hub, which we already reviewed in the Logitech G Pro Wireless review, but, in my opinion, it is still damp, as there are various technical oversights that do not allow using the software without problems. So Logitech Gaming Software comes to the rescue, as this software is still in service, and it has everything you need to set up a mouse. The mouse supports storing three profiles in its memory, so you can write whatever your heart desires to it, and use these functions even away from a PC with installed software. The range of features of LGS has always pleased and did not shine with unnecessary frills, and therefore here you can reassign all the keys, fine-tune the sensor sensitivity levels, play around with the backlight, and also track the number of clicks on a particular button. It is worth remembering that this function requires constant launch, so as a permanent and uninterrupted tool for collecting statistics, it obviously will not work.

What I like the most about the Logitech G502 HERO is its compact and folded shape, which allows for a good grip on the palm, allowing headshots left and right. My main problem was the sniper button — I had to bend my thumb all the time so as not to inadvertently press it. And then I just turned off this button and did not know the problems. The HERO sensor is exceptionally good: excellent accuracy, ultra-fast response to the slightest movement and the absence of any interference or incorrigible errors make this sensor one of the best on the market. The only pity is that in the presence of energy efficiency, this quality is not used in any way.

And everything else is not so significant, but I would like to note something. Firstly, the cable — it really stopped dragging the mouse along, and this is a small progress. Secondly, mass. Say what you like, but the mouse does not pretend to be an esports weapon, and despite the fact that it is perfect for games of absolutely any genre, it is unlikely to be able to prove itself as well in the esports field as, say, some model like the G403 or G Pro Wireless. The presence of a bunch of buttons (the same sniper button), a cable and a large mass — some of this can become an obstacle on the way to the coveted headshot. And it will happen, as you might guess, at the most inopportune moment. Therefore, it is rather a universal solution, so that you can unleash the capabilities of the mouse to the maximum in any programs, and play without any restrictions.

The Logitech G502 HERO is a natural update to the multi-button and very popular model of the company, which has acquired the most advanced optical sensor of its own production, and in terms of reliability, the mouse gained confidence due to the installation of new and durable Omron switches. The price of this model has not changed much compared to previous brothers, so if you are looking for a multi-button mouse (for work or for games in the MOBA genre), then the Logitech G502 will suit you perfectly. This is a great example of an excellent minor update, where a form that has been proven over the years was simply brought to mind, equipping it with the most up-to-date hardware. However, there is one thing that I regret: this mouse, unlike many others, was not transferred to a wireless basis, which with the installation of a HERO energy-saving sensor would look like a logical decision. Looking forward to future updates?

Review of the Logitech G305 Lightspeed gaming wireless mouse / Overclockers.ua

After the PixArt PMW3366 sensor ceased to be exclusive to Logitech, and other brands received its counterparts under different names at their disposal, the company began to actively transfer its gaming mice to the sensor own development called Hero. In many respects it is similar to the 336x series of sensors, but this similarity is more limited to the characteristics than the internal device, you just need to look and compare the appearance of their chips. Unfortunately, the origin of the Hero is shrouded in the darkness of trade secrets (however, like the AM010 and Mercury), but there is no doubt that this sensor is unique. And the main difference of Hero, nevertheless, consists in extremely low power consumption (10-fold superiority relative to all 336x sensors is declared) and it is not surprising that a place has firmly entrenched behind it in wireless gaming mice. And the first representative of a new cohort of devices with this sensor, which came to our review, was the Logitech G305 Lightspeed manipulator. At first glance, he wants to ask a question — is this the wireless version from the G102, or from the G Pro? Let’s take a look in detail.

Delivery set

But first, let’s traditionally consider the packaging and delivery set. The mouse box is blue and small in size. It features a product image on the front and back and lists the four main features in multiple languages - light weight, Hero optical sensor, LIGHTSPEED wireless technology, and battery savings. Specifications can be read on the left sidewall. Inside, a cardboard damper and a bag are provided as protection against damage.

In addition to the mouse, the kit includes a 1.5-meter USB 2.0 extension cable for connecting the receiver, warranty information, a short user manual, the receiver and one Duracell AA battery.

Appearance and design

The Logitech G305 has a fairly simple, streamlined and symmetrical shape that basically follows the contours of the G102 and G Pro. The size of the mouse is medium, not small, as it might seem at first. The top panel is made of smooth matte plastic, which is highly resistant to dirt. The G logo is painted on the back in gray paint. The LMB and RMB panels are separate, under them are Omron switches with a MTBF of 10 million clicks. In addition, these panels are spring-loaded, so they have no play and quickly return to their original position. They are quite light in terms of pressing force, with loud juicy click sounds. Between the keys is a glossy insert, which has a built-in scroll wheel, a small oval key for changing the resolution (light, with a muffled click sound), a dot indicator of the current resolution and battery level.

The back of the top panel can be removed by pressing it slightly in the center and sliding it back. Below it is a centrally located compartment for a single battery, on the side of which a pocket for the receiver perched. Under the top cover there is a soft springy insert that provides a good hold on the battery. The weight of an empty mouse is 74 grams.

No matter how wonderful and stable wireless communication is provided by LIGHTSPEED technology, nobody canceled the laws of physics. The greater the distance between the receiver and the transmitter, the greater the delay in signal transmission and the more extraneous radio interference interferes with the signal in the now overloaded 2.4 GHz band. Therefore, the kit also includes an extension for the mouse receiver, which allows you to place it next to the rug and minimize these problems. The receiver should ideally be less than 20 cm from the mouse and no closer than 2 meters from other wireless devices such as a Wi-Fi router.

Left side panel made of textured plastic. In the middle, at the top, there are two narrow glossy side buttons. They are easy to press and resonant in the sound of actuation. Buttons have no free play.

In the front view, you can see that the main keys have indentations for the fingers. The detail fit is good. The scroll wheel is rubberized, with even transverse notches. It rotates quite quietly, has clearly defined fixation positions, clearly distinguishable tactilely. The middle key is pressed tight and quiet.

The right side of the mouse is the same as the left, but without the side buttons.

The tail of the mouse is streamlined and rounded. Fits comfortably at the base of the palm when gripping with a “claw” or “palm”.

The Logitech G305 is well suited for all major types of grip and will be equally comfortable in both right and left hands. The mouse is most versatile for small and medium-sized hands; those with large hands will probably prefer to use it purely in a finger grip.

The base of the mouse has four oval Teflon feet at the corners, a pad around the sensor and another small round foot at the back. The power switch is also located there. In the center is the Hero optical sensor window with infrared illumination.

We did not open the manipulator, videos about disassembling this mouse can be easily found on the Internet. And there we noticed one interesting feature. The Hero sensors on the Logitech G305, G Pro, and Pro Wireless look very different, although they are named the same. And most of all, the sensor from the G305 is similar in shape of the microcircuit and the external backlight diode to the mysterious Mercury from the G102. As for the Hero sensors in the G Pro and Pro Wireless, although they have a backlight integrated into the microcircuit, they also differ in appearance.

Luckily, the mouse does not have RGB lighting elements to save battery, and the only thing that can glow on it is the dot indicator in the middle. It does not shine for long either, but it shows in color what mode the mouse is currently working in (when turned on), what resolution level is selected and how long the battery will last.

Software

To configure the Logitech G305 Lightspeed mouse, the user can choose between two software options. The first is Logitech Gaming Software’s traditional generic driver, and the second is a new variation of the Logitech G HUB driver, which is still under development and testing. Both software can even be installed at the same time, however, in this case, G HUB will have priority until its removal. That is why we will tell about it. From the main screen there is quick access to device selection, profile change, program settings (upper right corner), account (lower right corner), news viewing and access to the official website (bottom feed).

If you wish, you can create your own account to access the cloud storage of profiles.

The mouse supports one built-in memory profile. In order to edit it, the program needs to be allowed access. In LGS, in this regard, everything was a little simpler.

After switching on, we get access to the assignments of any of the six keys. The set of valid commands is standard — keyboard and mouse clicks, Windows functions and macros. It is possible to set alternative commands that will be activated in G-Shift mode when the button responsible for it is pressed.

The macro editor looks pretty funny and allows you to record a sequence of commands from the keyboard and mouse, taking into account delays. When you finish recording, you can choose from four ways to play back the macro. Mouse cursor positions and scroll wheel directions are not fixed by the application. You can add text and emoji directly to the body of the macro, embed a connection with the start of the application, a system command or a delay.

Up to five sensitivity levels can be selected in the sensor settings, ranging from 200 to 12,000 cpi in 50 cpi increments. To quickly select a specific level, you can assign the «DPI SHIFT» key. The polling rate is selectable from 125, 250, 500 and 1000 Hz, but this is only available in high performance mode. When the mouse is set to sensor save mode, the polling rate is fixed at 125Hz.

In the profile management (tab at the top center of the main screen) you can bind a profile to the start of a specific application, create a usage scenario for it, assign a basic profile, add the necessary macros to it.

This is how the G HUB setup window looks like. Here you select the parameters for its launch and operation, the interface language, here you can also update the program or view the manual for it. In the «My Equipment» section, options for supported devices are selected, and in ARX Control, you can configure pairing with an external screen or mobile device to display program data on it.

Ergonomics and Testing

The Logitech G305 Lightspeed mouse was tested on a plain black Mionix Alioth M cloth mousepad. The receiver was placed right next to the playing surface, as instructed. Compared to what is now considered to be «gaming mice», the G305 looks a little primitive, like a guest from the past. There are no rubber or metal inserts, soft-touch, multi-colored garlands and aggressive forms. Everything is extremely ordinary, and if someone else remembers Logitech Pilot mice from the early 2000s, they will definitely notice the similarities. But behind all this lies reliability and functionality. The body is assembled strong and at the same time light. Mouse weight with battery is 96 grams, and it is perfectly distributed along the axes of symmetry so that the manipulator does not fall to the sides when separated from the surface. The mousepads fit well in the fingers and are resistant to dirt. The behavior of all keys and the scroll wheel can be called excellent — they are clear and responsive. The main buttons are additionally spring loaded. The legs here are not particularly slippery and in general the mouse has low inertia.

In terms of communication stability, everything is also very good. When working and playing, both in the maximum mode and in the reduced performance mode, I was not able to experience delays or lags. This mouse in use cannot be distinguished from a wired one without special devices. The mouse has a sleep mode after several minutes of inactivity even in the game mode, but the power saving is not aggressive and to exit this state, just move the mouse slightly, while the cursor freezes for just a fraction of a second. The mode of constant activity is not provided here, because this option of automatic saving can be considered an acceptable compromise.

If the mouse is used at the lowest setting, the battery will last approximately 9 months of active daily use. But at maximum speed, the battery life is up to 250 hours, which is about a month of playing 10 hours a day. Thus, in addition to the mouse, players will have to splurge on a decent battery, or even two (in reserve) if they do not want to use battery bandoliers for a year (especially since the battery will pay for itself in full in a year).

Regarding the operation of the Hero sensor (in the modification that is installed here), I had no complaints. It is not much different from the PMW3360 in terms of performance, maintains high speed and pointer positioning accuracy. It is also impossible to cause the cursor to stall on it, and there are no parasitic features like acceleration, excessive smoothing of the trajectory and angular binding. The only difference is the impossibility of adjusting the separation height, here it is fixed at a level of just under 2 mm. The ideal range of resolutions, from my point of view, will be a segment of 800-2000 cpi.

Summary

The Logitech G305 Lightspeed is a quality and durable yet simple gaming mouse that is the wireless version of the Logitech G102.
