Live stream 1080p 60fps internet: Twitch Streamers — Twitch Video Encoding/Bitrates/And Stuff

Twitch Streamers — Twitch Video Encoding/Bitrates/And Stuff

Broadcasting Guidelines

Read the info below to help you choose the Encoding, Bitrate, Resolution, and Framerate
settings that provide the right balance for the game you’re playing, your internet speed,
and your computer’s hardware.
Remember: it’s always better to have a stable stream than to push for a higher video quality
that might cause you to drop frames or test the limits of your internet connection.

Encoding

Encoding Performance

Encoding can be taxing on your system. x264 will utilize a lot of your CPU, resulting in lower FPS. Alternatively, GPU encoding (e.g. NVIDIA NVENC) utilizes a dedicated encoder in the GPU, allowing you to play and stream without compromising game performance . If you want to use x264, start with veryfast preset, and experiment with them until you find your sweet spot.

Encoding Quality

x264 offers a wide range of presets that change quality significantly, and presets above Faster require CPUs with 6+ cores. NVIDIA NVENC offers consistent quality based on the generation of the encoder. The updated NVIDIA Encoder (NVENC) on Turing-based NVIDIA GeForce GPUs (RTX 20-Series and GTX 1660/Ti) will typically produce superior quality than x264 Fast and on par with x264 medium. While the older generation (Pascal, Kepler) are similar with veryfast/faster quality.

Internet Speed (bitrate)

Your ingest bitrate is the amount of data you send to Twitch when you stream.
A higher bitrate takes up more of your available internet bandwidth.
Increasing your bitrate can improve your video quality, but only up to a certain point—
our recommended bitrate settings have been tested to optimize video quality without wasting bandwidth.

Video Quality

Resolution refers to the size of a video on a screen,
and frame rate refers to how often animation frames are sent to Twitch.
Full HD resolution is typically 1080p, 60 frames per second (fps).
Streaming at a higher resolution like 1080p requires a higher bitrate,
and a higher frame rate takes more encoding power.
If you have the bandwidth and encoding power to stream at 1080p, 60 fps, great!
If not, try one of the recommended settings below to optimize your video quality and stability.

What Is Upload Speed?

Download speed is the rate of transferring data from the internet to your computer and upload speed is the rate of transferring data from your computer to the internet. Learn about the ideal upload speed for live streaming

You may be well versed in download speed if you like playing games or streaming videos. Download speed determines how fast you can receive information shared on the internet. Upload speed refers to the reverse, i.e., the speed at which information you share travels through the internet. This could include attaching files to online folders, sending emails, and even uploading videos and music to websites. You can think of download speed as the speed of data consumption and upload speed as the speed of delivering your created content.

Most internet providers only advertise their download speed, since this is what concerns the majority of users. However, people who work in graphic design, animation, and other kinds of specialized content creation need to pay attention to upload speed too.

Why Is Upload Speed Important?

A slow upload speed means more time spent waiting, buffering and watching the loading circle tick to completion. Upload speed is important to stream live and to share uninterrupted or glitch-free content on gaming platforms. Pixelated, stuttered or frozen feeds diminish the thrill of the game or the quality of the images you share.

How Is Upload Speed Calculated?

It is calculated in megabits per second (Mbps) or kilobits per second (Kbps). One megabit is equal to 1,024 kilobits. Remember, the difference between upload and download speed is that they act in opposite directions. There are a number of websites that offer speed tests: www.meter.net, www.speedcheck.org, www.speed.io.

What Is the Best Upload Speed for You?

There are a lot of factors that affect upload speed. Primary among them is your internet connection. It must be stable and fast. The best option these days is fiber, but this may not be available in your area or otherwise really expensive.

Fiber is so highly recommended because it has low latency and also the download and upload rates are similar. Latency refers to the time it takes for a signal to go from your computer to a server on the internet. If you have high latency, then you may suffer lags and delays.

If you are using DSL or Broadband, then you should beware of Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi speeds are often half the advertised speed, since most advertised speeds are calculated based on a wired connection. Any obstruction can interfere with your Wi-Fi signal. Consider adding additional routers or Wi-Fi extenders, to improve the connection. For live streaming and gaming, a wired connection with an ethernet cable connected to a router can be a reliable option.

To get the best results, close excess programs and apps that may be running in the background. To optimize upload speed, consider the frame rate, pixelation, and resolution. Frames per second refers to the number of images you send in one second. Usually, this is set at 30 or 60 frames per second. Software, such as OBS Studio, Streamlabs, and VMix, that compress large files can help.

These are the average upload speeds required on the top three platforms:

  • Twitch requires 6000 Kbps for 1080 p at 60 fps and 4500 Kbps for 720p at 60 fps
  • Facebook gaming requires 4500 to 9000 Kbps for 1080p at 60 fps but you have to join their Level Up Program to stream at this level. The starting level is 720p at 30fps which requires 400 to 1000 Kbps.
  • YouTube has different speeds to choose from, depending on the quality. The range goes from 720p at 60fps (which requires only 2.2 Mbps) to 2160p at at 60 fps (which requires 20 Mbps).

Advice differs on the surplus speed needed to achieve uninterrupted and high-quality streaming. Facebook gaming advises users to aim for 25% more than their expected need, to be extra sure. Some websites recommend 10 Mbps no matter the minimum requirements. What they all agree on, however, is that fluctuations in bandwidth are all too common. For the best possible experience, they all suggest exceeding the minimum requirements.

compare 8 platforms for online broadcasts — Marketing on vc.

During the pandemic, views of live videos have increased significantly. Online broadcasts of events have existed before, but now almost everyone who wants to organize an event will inevitably have to deal with streaming services.

We regularly broadcast as a contractor and decided to prepare an overview of the most popular venues to make it easier for you to figure out which service to use for your event.

This article compares eight sites: Twitch, YouTube, Zoom, Discord, Webinar, Webex Events, Microsoft Teams, FaceCast and Vimeo. We will evaluate each on five parameters: price, privacy (that is, the ability to create private broadcasts), interactivity, picture quality, and integration opportunities.

1. Twitch.tv is ideal for a monologue or game stream, but not suitable for a private conference

Price. All Twitch functionality is available for free — the service is monetized mainly through advertising. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage: ads will be automatically embedded right during the broadcast and can be annoying. Twitch has a paid subscription — in March 2021 it costs $8.99 per month. It removes almost all ads, adds a few cosmetic features like an expanded set of emojis, and makes it possible to keep streams longer.

Privacy. Can’t create a private meeting on Twitch. Anyone can connect to your broadcast: for some events this is not a problem, but, for example, Twitch is not suitable for paid conferences.

Interactivity. Viewers can only chat under the broadcast. This is useful if one person is broadcasting to a large audience and listeners are not required to participate in the conversation. But an interactive conference via Twitch will not work: for full-fledged communication, for example, between the speaker and the viewers of the broadcast, you will have to connect third-party programs.

Procedure for copying player

Image quality. With a stable internet connection, Twitch has high video quality. The platform is capable of receiving and broadcasting videos up to 4K, while it is completely free.

Integrations. Twitch player is easy to integrate to your site.

Total. Twitch is an ideal platform for game streaming or face-to-face conversations in front of the camera, but not suitable for closed conferences.

For example, we recently broadcast on Twitch the finals of the Dota 2 esports tournament ‘Red Bull River Runes 3’. The event was not closed, plus it was necessary to stream games — Twitch was a great fit.

2. YouTube is a free option for broadcasting an event without interactive in 4K

Price. Any user who has a channel can start broadcasting on YouTube from a computer for free. True, from mobile devices you can only stream from a thousand subscribers.

If you didn’t have a channel and you are creating a new one specifically for streaming, keep in mind: to start the first broadcast, you need to wait about a day for moderation.

Privacy. As for videos, you can set the access level for broadcasts on YouTube:

  • «Open access» — everyone can watch the stream,
  • «Access by link» — only those who receive the link can watch the stream; moreover, they can forward the link to someone else, and it will work,
  • «Restricted access» — only those to whom you send the link by mail will look; they will not be able to share the broadcast link.

Chat is available in all variants. If you do not expect that the participants of a private event will share a link, it is enough to set the privacy level to “Access by link”.

Interactivity. YouTube only has live chat, and even the emoji are not as pretty as on Twitch. In addition, to leave a message in the chat, the user must be logged into a YouTube account. You will not be able to have two-way communication on this site.

Picture quality. There are usually no problems with quality, you can stream video in 4K for free.

Integrations. The YouTube player is easy to integrate into the site using HTML code. True, if a person pauses the broadcast while on a third-party site, he will most likely open a huge window of personal recommendations right on top of the player. This can affect retention statistics: if the viewer is interested in another video, he will leave the broadcast.

Total. YouTube is a universal and simple solution: everything is free, a clear interface, tips from the start menu to the start of the broadcast. The platform is perfect for single influencers or streams where you don’t need an interactive one.

3. Vimeo is a paid alternative to YouTube with the best interactive experience, but with limited quality

Price. The service has no restrictions on the number of viewers of the broadcast, plus they will not be shown ads, but you need to pay for Vimeo. To be able to stream, you need to pay a Premium plan for 4 900 ₽ per month. Keep in mind that you need to buy one year in advance.

Privacy. A broadcast can be either public or private. You can allow only those you follow to watch it, protect it with a password, send an invitation link, or manually select accounts that can watch the stream — then they will receive an invite.

Interactivity. Unlike YouTube, Vimeo has interactive tools: in addition to chat, you can start a poll with a free answer or a choice of answers from a list. You can also add simple graphics, a logo and inscriptions on top of the stream picture live.

Picture quality. During broadcast, the maximum quality is Full HD, but recordings can also be viewed in 4K.

Integrations. The player can be embedded on a website or streamed to social networks.

Total. Vimeo is an alternative to YouTube for those who want more options for streaming integration and control, and are willing to pay.

4. Discord is an affordable voice chat solution, but with limitations in quality, viewership, and integrations

Price. All Discord functionality is available for free, including the ability to stream video in 720p at 30fps for up to 50 people. If you buy a Nitro Classic subscription for $4.99 per month, you will be able to stream at 1080p/60fps, if you buy Nitro for $9.99, you will get 4K/60fps.

Privacy. A completely private broadcast can be made on the platform. It is enough to send users a link.

Steps to Create a Private Link in Discord

Interactivity. Each of the 50 participants can go live, plus the main feature of Discord is available to everyone — live voice chats. The service has a functional text chat where you can upload files, and you can also conduct polls in Discord.

Image quality. For 4K streaming, you need to buy a maximum subscription for $9. 99 per month. But Discord isn’t built for video streaming at all — it’s much better suited as an add-on to Twitch. For example, you can broadcast there, and leave only voice chat in Discord.

Integrations. Discord cannot be integrated into third-party programs and applications.

Total. Discord is a great platform for a large live voice chat, but it won’t work as the main tool for broadcasting large events.

5. Zoom Meetings — basic live video solution with limited quality

Price. The free plan for Zoom Meetings allows you to stream a maximum of 100 participants and only 40 minutes. To remove the time limit and increase the number of participants to 300, you need to pay a subscription for 19$.99 per month. To raise the limit to 500 or 1000 people, pay for the Large Meetings add-on, which costs $50 or $90 per month, respectively. Zoom has a flexible pricing structure and several add-ons – read more on the website.

Privacy. In Zoom Meetings, you will have full control over the participants of the broadcast. You can enter a password for the conference, or you can additionally leave the waiting room and simply do not let those you do not expect to call.

Interactivity. Each of the participants can go live, plus there is a text chat with the ability to send a private message and attach a file. And in Zoom Meetings, you can “raise your hand”: so the conference administrators will see that you have a question.

Image quality. Zoom catastrophically compresses the quality of video and sound. This can be partially corrected in the settings by removing the restrictions on video and audio, but this does not completely solve the problem.

Steps to Adjust Video Quality in Zoom

Integrations. Zoom Meetings cannot be integrated into third-party programs and applications. However, with the help of third-party programs, you can take video and sound from the screen, which can later become part of a third-party broadcast.

Total. Zoom Meetings — suitable for large private video calls, but the video quality is rather weak — lower than that of competitors. Plus, in any case, it will be paid — otherwise the broadcast will last only 40 minutes.

From the point of view of broadcasting a person — the world, we recommend Zoom Webinar more, but about it in our next material.

For example, in Zoom Meetings we made two broadcasts — we showed the conference of the Evotor company and the work at the Karat plant.

6. Webinar — the best solution for educational streams with rich interactive features

Price. The free Webinar plan can only broadcast video to 5 participants. To raise the limit to 30, you need to pay 5 995 ₽ per month to go up to 150 — 11,995 ₽ per month. The service is ready to personally discuss the conditions with those who need to stream for 10,000 participants.

Please note that not all participants can be speakers. For example, in the tariff for 30 people, speakers can have a maximum of 6 people: if you have more speakers at the event, you will have to pay extra.

Privacy. Through Webinar, you can create public broadcasts — just copy the invitation link and send it to anyone. But you can also create private broadcasts, for which participants need to register in advance. Through Webinar, you can make a paid broadcast, while the platform itself will accept payments — you just need to conclude an agency agreement with Webinar.

Interactivity. There is a general chat with the ability to send a private message and attach a file. Also in the service, you can conduct tests and votes right during the broadcast. You can create a question with a choice from a list or with a free answer, limit the time for passing and set a minimum passing score. The moderator will see the response statistics in real time, and after the completion of the survey, he will be able to broadcast a chart with response statistics — it is generated automatically. Broadcast materials can be uploaded to the site in advance and shown during the broadcast.

Picture quality. By default, Webinar will stream video in 240p, but you can set it to «Medium», «High» or «HD» in the settings. Maximum video quality will be better than Zoom, but worse than Twitch or YouTube. If you want to use a ready-made video in the broadcast, you can upload it to the platform in advance and even edit it live, there is a mini-editor for this.

Integrations. Webinar has its own player that can be integrated into the site. They also have an API that allows you, for example, to transfer data from the registration form on your site to Webinar. In this way, you can automatically register people for the broadcast — they do not need to go to Webinar.ru and create an account for themselves.

Total. Webinar is an ideal solution for training events because it allows you to create tests and votes for participants, plus it gives the moderator many tools to control the broadcast in real time. But in any case, this solution will be paid — otherwise you are limited to an audience of 5 people, you will not be able to connect several speakers or transmit video in good quality.

7. Webex Events is a professional business event solution with a large team of moderators

Price. Service for broadcasts up to 10,000 participants costs about 300 thousand per year. Cisco offers customers individual conditions: now you can’t find out the price on the site — everything is only on request.

Webex is great for hosts’ teamwork. In parallel with the main broadcast, you can even create a separate sub-conference, where the hosts can communicate with the speakers and among themselves. In the tariff for 10,000 participants, there are no restrictions on the number of speakers and organizers. Moreover, one Webex account can simultaneously host different webinars from two computers — for example, Zoom would have to buy two licenses for this.

Privacy. You can create a broadcast in Webex that anyone can join, but they still need to register to join. This service is more focused on private broadcasts: for example, through Webex, you can send out invitations to participants’ emails or create a registration form that viewers need to fill out in advance. Fields can be made mandatory. Also in Webex, you can set a password to connect to the broadcast.

Interactivity. During the broadcast, there is a chat with the ability to send a private message. At the end, you can make a survey, for example, to check how the participants learned the knowledge or collect feedback.

Image quality. Standard Full HD. The technology automatically adjusts the video quality of each participant in accordance with the capabilities of his computer and the stability of the connection. But audio and video can be recorded separately.

Integrations. In theory, videos from a Webex broadcast can be embedded on your site by passing through YouTube. Plus, Webex has an API: the service can be integrated, for example, with the Salesforce CRM system to send customers an invitation to a video presentation of a new product.

Total. Webex is best for those who need to stream business events regularly to a large but limited audience. For example, for all employees or for several hundred customers who have registered in advance. It is very convenient to work in a large team of organizers on this platform. Video transmission quality is lower than that of competitors.

8. FaceCast — a solution with multi-camera and audio translation, but with limitations on interactive

Price. If you pay per month, the tariff for 2000 participants costs 29,900 ₽, but you can pay for the broadcast — then each will cost 4,990 ₽.

The site has two important features, both are available from the «Profi» tariff:

  • Multi-camera. For example, you can broadcast two sections of the conference in parallel, and the user himself will choose which one to watch. You can switch directly in the player.
  • Additional audio tracks with translation. You can connect an interpreter to the broadcast, who will work in real time. The user can choose the language in which he will listen to the broadcast.

FaceCast tariffs

Privacy. The broadcast can be shown on the Facecast website and made public, then it will be enough to send the link to the viewers. You can create a private broadcast — enter registration or set a password. You can also accept payments for streaming through FaceCast, and you’ll even be able to sell tickets with live access or recording-only access.

Interactivity. There is a chat inside the player, plus you can create polls where the user selects one option from the list.

Image quality. Starting with the «Standard» tariff, the second cheapest, you can stream video in HD. 4K resolution is available only at the maximum tariff, its cost will be calculated individually.

Integrations. The player is easy to integrate into the site, plus you can customize it: choose a color and put your logo.

Total. Facecast has the ability to stream from multiple cameras and with multiple audio tracks for translation into other languages. Therefore, this platform is best suited for broadcasting a large international event — for example, a scientific conference with a focus on English-speaking viewers, where performances run in parallel. FaceCast won’t be able to make complex interactions with viewers, but it’s a great alternative to Youtube and Twitch for professional events.
