EXCEPTIONAL STORYTELLING!

In my honest opinion, Little Hope is better than Man of Medan and until dawn. There is so much depth to this story, and the pacing is brilliant in making sure you are constantly empathising with the confusion and fear the characters feel.
The range of setting, and history and ACCENT ACCURACY!! (Brilliant Yorkshire accents) I very seldom feel so invested in every timeline of a story that jumps back and forth.
This game will leave you constantly trying to figure it out, so you’re right where the game wants you. The witch trials storyline is both unnerving and opinion dividing as you truly feel left to your own devices, and totally in control of the outcome.

Worth the time and money, there’s a very powerful ending, giving space to much conversation and debate afterwards.

A Little Hope Sequel to Man of Medan

Man of Medan hasn’t officially launched yet, and surprisingly the sequel has already been revealed. The next game in Supermassive Games’ The Dark Pictures Anthology series is called Little Hope . You can watch the trailer below:

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope

The trailer features a young man named Andrew who lives in the quaint town from which the game takes its name — Little Hope . Andrew is played by none other than BAFTA Rising Star winner Will Poulter ( We’re the Millers, The Maze Runner ).

Poulter also starred in Netflix’s Bandersnatch special episode for Black Mirror’s . The anthology series was critically acclaimed. Meanwhile, Bandersnatch was an attempt by Netflix to create an interactive episode that offered multiple choices leading to a branching storyline. nine0004 Isn’t it fitting that Poulter, who played Colin Ritman’s character, a computer genius who seems to have an idea for parallel realities and multiple re-selection, is now part of an interactive cinematic video game with similar concepts and mechanics?

I digress. Anyway, in the trailer for A Little Hope , Poulter’s character is screaming about his girlfriend Angela, who seems to be in big trouble. A creature is also shown climbing out of the pit, as well as a creepy girl dancing around the fire. Perhaps we will see more occult and demonic themes in The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope ?

Little Hope — Man of Medan’s «Secret Ending»

Before I can even consider answering this question, I must admit that I’m quite puzzled. It is not yet known how the teaser trailer for Little Hope was leaked. Sources seem to note that this pops up somewhere in «The Man from Medan » as a kind of «secret ending». nine0009

The original source was a Twitter user named @Slashthrasher who mentioned that a cinematic will be available if you stay past the end credits.

They did it! Make sure to stay tuned after Man of Medan credits. They show the next game in the series and title!

While I was reviewing the full walkthrough of Man of Medan , I replayed the game several times. I was also able to find about seven endings and various post-credits scenes. Oddly enough, no ending scene or post-credits scene led to the teaser trailer for A Little Hope .

The most it hinted at was in one of the premonitions of Man of Medan that can be skipped, or in the in-game pictures that I explained in detail. This also includes not skipping the end credits list and rewatching all the endings and post-credits scenes that I received. Who knows how it happened? nine0009 A secret premonition of a man from Medan , depicting a scene from «Little Hope» .

Anyway, the next The Dark Pictures Anthology game, Little Hope , will be released in 2020. As for the first game in the series, Man of Medan, it’s out tomorrow (August 30) and you can find it on Steam.

The Dark Pictures is a horror anthology. However, it is still strange to call works that come out less than once a year an anthology. The narrator also says at the end that the next game may be the last. Well… that doesn’t make me sad.

Like its predecessor, Man of Medan, Little Hope is an interactive slasher, and poorly written. And among the heroes there are not only teenagers, from whom you don’t seem to expect anything smart within the framework of the genre, but also adults. Perhaps Supermassive Games should have hired a horror writer or filmed Lovecraft with Barker. nine0009

As with the previous game, there are several modes. You can play alone, consistently learning the whole story, in the company behind the same TV (this is the best option) and online, when one person does not know what is happening with the other, if the characters are separated (worst option — no one will understand anything).

Two stupid screamers in a row. Who ever said that an ordinary little girl can and should scare?

This time the story is not only about students: there are two adults in the company. But, alas, they behave worse than teenagers. The professor, who, in theory, should lead the group, allegedly fights for leadership (but in reality no one claims this role), and for some reason Angela is rude to everyone for no reason and generally behaves in general inadequately. nine0009

This applies to almost all dialogues. Either they were severely cut, or they were written by different people, then awkwardly gluing them together. At some dangerous moment, the heroes can easily stop and start sorting out relationships that the player absolutely does not care about.

As before, each character has a relationship with the others, which changes depending on the dialogue. As before, it is absolutely unclear what this affects at all

Fake people

The entire first part of the game is a parade of idiotic dialogues and events. The bus with the heroes overturns, they find themselves in a fog that prevents them from returning and takes them to the gloomy town of Little Hope, where witches used to be burned. Along the way, they encounter strange witch symbols, a creepy little girl, and who knows what else. What will real people do in such a situation?

Screaming? Run? Panic? However, for some reason, the characters instead discuss personal relationships, which, without context (the player doesn’t know anything about them, after all) sound like inappropriate chatter. Angela, a nice-looking woman, for some reason clings to Taylor’s girl, Taylor is dating Daniel and wants to keep it a secret, the professor wants to be the leader of the group, but is afraid of it and makes idiotic mistakes. nine0009

Who cares about their relationship anyway?! After all, the authors did not bother to write at least some kind of background, as it was, say, in Until Dawn. Almost like the effect of the uncanny valley, only it’s not about the appearance, but about the behavior of the characters.

Most of the game will be spent on the road in the fog, where nothing interesting happens. This brings to mind another Supermassive Games game, after which they stopped working with Sony — the VR horror Inpatient, where the whole second half had to … just go. nine0009

Nothing happened, the heroes just walked in single file along the corridors. Here is the same story, only instead of a corridor there is a road and rare forest paths.

The transition between times is furnished, of course, with a screamer. Get ready to see him very often

However, it’s still unfair to say that Little Hope has no idea. Saves the main intrigue, which, unlike Man of Medan, is not easy to figure out. The characters are occasionally pulled into Little Hope’s past, during the time of the witch burnings. The story develops in two times — in the present and in the past, and at the same time the faces of the characters are the same. nine0009

And that’s when the plot twists (why do we look like them? Is anyone here really a witch or not?), it becomes interesting, and the characters finally start to behave like people — yell at each other, panic, act recklessly.

The writers said they were inspired by Silent Hill, Blair Witch Project and It’s Coming for You. The third source of inspiration shows itself towards the end of the game and it is he who makes Little Hope a game in which it is still not a shame to spend an evening with friends. nine0009

Most Idiot Interactive Movie Chase Found

It’s only a pity that all this happens only towards the end, and until now the player is forced to listen to stupid dialogues and try to somehow follow the logic of the characters’ behavior, which seems to be absent here.

They do not show any emotions where they should: when they see, for example, some strange image on the bridge (“everything is fine, let’s move on”), but they suddenly stop to discuss gossip or some nonsense that the player has long understood. nine0009

Well, a significant part of the dialogues is just chatter about nothing, in no way related to the case. Is the professor a good leader who runs away at the first opportunity? Why does this question even arise if no one has yet had to show leadership qualities?

The professor claims to be the leader of the group. A stupid and funny scene that could very well be in Killer Vacation, but not in horror

Here and there you can find books or pamphlets about witch hunts without any useful information — just as a fact. Dear authors of Little Hope, do you think that the player is so stupid that he himself will not be able to guess that witches were burned here

Why hide behind a shelf in a store in fear, only to shout “Ay” three minutes later? The character complains that she cannot see anything, but at the same time a lamp hangs directly above her. Half of the game’s motivation is to find the missing bus driver. But … why look for him, the bus is broken?

To be fair, the bus driver is important to the story, but the player is not given any hint of this. The heroes are just looking for him for some reason and that’s it.

There are some gameplay changes. QTEs are not shown immediately — at first, just an icon that supposedly should give time to get ready. But no one in the industry does that, so you have a chance to get confused when you get used to different mechanics. nine0009

But aiming has returned from Until Dawn. It is difficult to say whether this is good or not, but when the monster drags the hero by the leg, it is more logical not just to press the square, but to aim and kick him in the face with the other leg. This definitely adds dynamics to the action scenes, which are many times more here than in Men of Medan.

In the Russian translation, thank God, there is a mate — because it is they who will be yelled at by a normal person who has met a monster.
