My thoughts on Lineage 2 (Interlude) : MMORPG
I thought I’d share it here. I’ve been playing Lineage 2 (L2) from C3 to Interlude on and off for the past 10 years. This is from a viewpoint of a casual player.
*** SUMMARY *** L2 is an old (~2000s’) hardcore MMORPG that requires almost a year of constant grinding to get your character to peak levels. Sometime you have to compete for hunting spots while fight off other players (or groups of players) in an open PvP world. Death penalty is quite brutal, especially when you are at high levels.
Good equipment is essential for your journey in this dark fantasy game and obtaining them can be a real challenge.
*** CLASS *** There are many races in L2 and each race branches out into many classes. Each class has its own unique skills, strength and weakness.
*** ECONOMY *** Pretty basic here, you grind the monsters and take the loots. There’s a player class called BountyHunter (BH). BHs are good at getting the extra (and rare) stuff out of monsters’ corpses so a BH (or his/her party) can get rich faster.
The stuff you got from monsters (both basic & rare) can be used to craft weapons and armor (requiring a player class crafter to create the items).
Just like gambling, crafting higher-grade equipment and enhancing items can fail.
*** POLITICS *** Players band together into clans. Most of the time, big clans control good hunting spots and castles (sort of fortified bases that give perks).
Sometime members from big clans will harass/kill clanless newbies or members of smaller clans. The reasons can range from competing for good hunting spots, verbal altercation, etc. Big clans also make alliance and fight rival clan to expand their influence and territory.
Very often, big clans and top players will outright bully, drive weaker players off and take over the hunting spots for themselves.
So as you can imagine, your journey in L2 can be a challenge — especially more so without powerful friends.
*** LEVELING *** Often, you’ll grind the same types of monsters for weeks, if not months.
L2 is an MMORPG with serious grinds …. Without access to good hunting spots, you’ll level up even slower (maybe 2-5x slower).
*** HUNTING SPOTS *** Outside town walls are vast open hunting grounds (both PvE & PvP can happen outside town walls). But some hunting grounds are concentrated with specific monsters that yield good loot when killed so these spots are highly contested (Also see Politics Section).
90% of the time, monsters spawn right back at the exact X,Y (which I think is quite a silly design :P).
*** PVP & PK *** Equipment and level dictates your survival in L2. Too many times, 3 mid-level players with mid-grade equipment will have no chance against one high-level player with decent equipment.
If someone fights you and you fight back that’s PvP. If fought to the death, the losing party loses (a hefty) amount of EXP. If you killed someone who did not retaliate then you are a PK (PlayerKiller). Your name turns red and there’s a chance you’ll drop equipment/items if you’re killed by someone.
A person who killed a PK will remain innocent. You cannot trade your gear to friends when you’re red.
In my opinion, L2 favors PK as the penalty is too light. You can clean your PK points (i.e. Karma) by killing just a few monsters and that’s it. It doesn’t take a lot of effort. The innocent players who didn’t want to PvP, on the other hand, ended up losing a lot of EXP points and boost effects (magic & potion effects).
