    Komplettlsung

Dunkler Wald:

Was tut ihr? Ganz einfach.

Also was heit befreien?

Danach kommen zwei hnliche Fallen.

We revisit the ending of Christopher Nolan’s Inception on its 10th anniversary to unpack what really happened and what it means.

Ten years on and folks still debate what exactly happened during the final moments of Inception. As director Christopher Nolan’s seventh film, the movie and its closing seconds are arguably what made him a household name. Of course he’d already helmed the global phenomenon that was The Dark Knight, but with Inception, Nolan presented an original and flawlessly executed vision that walked the line between pulpy summer thrills and superb science fiction brain teasers. And nothing was more teasing—or to some infuriating—than an ending that had people falling out of their seats over the brief wobble of a spinning top.

The moment in question is the literal last image of the film: a tractricoid top spinning on a kitchen table that belongs to Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCapiro). At least we think it is Cobb’s table. In truth, he hasn’t seen it in years because he fled the country after his wife and mother of his children, Mal (Marion Cotillard), killed herself due to the confusion he caused her. It’s an insidious revelation late in the movie when we learn that just by allowing this top to ceaselessly spin in her subconscious, he convinced Mal that her life, in all its forms, was a dreamy lie. Now Cobb uses the same cursed object as his own “totem,” a singular possession that allows the owner to tell the difference between a dream and reality.

Yet at the end of the film, after achieving what he’s wanted all these years—to return home—he doesn’t bother to wait at that table to see if his totem stops spinning, thereby confirming he’s awake and living his life instead of being trapped in a hideous delusion in some dark corner of his mind. Frankly, Cobb cannot distinguish the difference anymore and doesn’t care to. He’s home. And the top is still spinning. If. Only. Just. It might begin to falter, but Inception cuts to black before we can know for sure.

The intentional ambiguity of this ending launched a thousand think pieces and to this day incites argument among film critics, cinephiles, and just strangers quarantining on Twitter. There are those who’ll insist he’s awake, others that say he’s asleep, and more that suspect he and Mal never even awoke from limbo all those years ago. The filmmakers behind the film also don’t appear to be on the same page.

Two years ago, Michael Caine, who played Mal’s father in the film, admitted he didn’t understand the script but was assured if he’s on screen, then it must take place in reality. “I said to [Nolan], ‘I don’t understand where the dream is,’” Caine told Film 4’s Summer Screen. “He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene it’s reality.’ So get that – if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream!” That would be a simple way of concluding Cobb really did awaken alongside businessman Saito (Ken Watanabe) from their subconscious limbo experiences—a tall feat when it would’ve seemed like they lived decades and lifetimes in an abyss—and Cobb really got to see his children again. But then by Caine’s own logic, almost all the scenes in the movie could be a dream, as he’s barely in the film.

Indeed, the actual star of the film is not so confident about how events played out. Only earlier this year, DiCaprio told Marc Maron on his WTF podcast that he doesn’t know what happened at the end of the picture. “Sometimes you’re just focused on your character, man,” DiCaprio told his fellow actor. “I actually do get involved, but when it came to Chris Nolan and his mind, and how that would piece together, everyone was trying to constantly piece the puzzle together.” He finally added that the ending “depends on the eye of the beholder, I guess.”

Even Nolan himself is his typically laconic self about one of his film’s enduring mysteries.

“The way the end of the film worked, Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Cobb – he was off with his kids,” Nolan explained to The Guardian in 2015. “He was in his own subjective reality. He didn’t really care any more, and that makes a statement: perhaps all levels of reality are valid?”

While that’s a lovely dodge—and the significance of Inception’s ending extends beyond the binary choice of “dream versus awake”—we’d argue there is nevertheless a clear cut answer about what kind of happy ending Cobb got: It’s the one where he made his actual children happy too.

To be clear, DiCaprio’s Cobb is awake at the end of the movie and reunited with his real children, not false projections that could never realize these young souls in all their perfections and all their imperfections. They’re the real deal. And we know this not because Michael Caine is there to greet Cobb at LAX, but because of how Cobb has differentiated his reality from his dreams.

Despite what some abstract thinkers suggest, Inception is not entirely “just a dream.” This is proven every time Cobb is able to use his spinning top totem correctly. While it originally belonged to Mal, in her dream it spun for eternity. After Cobb appropriated it as his own following her unintentional suicide, we see it work the way it is intended when Cobb spends a lonely morning in a Tokyo hotel room during the movie’s early moments, and again after he and Ariadne (Ellen Page) get a frightful visit from the specter of Mal in one of Cobb’s dreams. Each time, the spinner stops spinning.

While the final image of the film delightfully (or frustratingly) cuts off before we see the spinner stop, it’s already heavily wobbling, which is something it’d never done before. And more telling than any hope Cobb places on the totem is the line he draws for himself when he’s awake. Obviously in his mind, he’s still married to Mal, a beloved wife who never leaves his side, even when it’s to the detriment of high stakes corporate espionage. Consider the moment when she interrupts Cobb’s James Bond impersonation during the film’s opening sequence to tell Saito he’s dreaming. It’s frustrating in the moment for Cobb, but his subconscious self is always attached to her, as implied by the fact in that very sequence he’s still wearing his wedding ring.

In fact, in every sequence of the film where Cobb is clearly established to be dreaming, he’s wearing the wedding ring. It’s there when he first lures Ariadne into the appeal of designing mazes in dreams, and it’s on his left hand when he’s going into a dream within a dream within another dream during the film’s amusingly convoluted third act. Even after he breaks up with Mal’s shade for good at the end of the movie, saying “you’re the best I could do, but I’m sorry you’re not enough,” he is still wearing that blasted ring. It’s on his hands when he meets Old Man Saito presumably years later in their shared limbo (at least years as far as their minds are concerned). She’ll always be with him.

But even if he can’t let go of his lost wife, in the real world he accepts she’s gone. That’s why he never once is wearing his wedding band in sequences clearly intended to be set in reality. It’s not there the first time we see Michael Caine in his Parisian classroom, nor is it there when Caine’s Miles introduces Cobb to Ariadne. Similarly, it’s not there at the end of the movie when he awakens on a jet bound for Los Angeles.

Some might consider this an oversight on Nolan’s part, given the sequence of him waking up was likely filmed the same day they showed Cobb and the others going to sleep. But as uncharitable as this is to a filmmaking maestro, it also would ignore how Nolan intentionally shows Cobbs pass through U.S. Customs while handing the border officer his papers with his left hand. No wedding ring is in sight. Ergo, when Cobb got home, his children were as awakened from a dreary nightmare as him.

While art really is in the eye of the beholder, and you can interpret Inception however you wish, based on the rules established by the film, we can say definitively that Cobb is intended to make it home and not be distracted by a lie. And yet, to settle for this as the main takeaway of the ending is to remain at the surface of Nolan’s dream.

After all, Nolan also said this in 2015: “I feel that, over time, we started to view reality as the poor cousin to our dreams, in a sense… I want to make the case to you that our dreams, our virtual realities, these abstractions that we enjoy and surround ourselves with, they are subsets of reality.

Inception does indeed make the argument that one reality is not necessarily more valid than the other. While Cobb as the hero of a Hollywood blockbuster says he will not settle for an abstraction, there are characters who do. Cobb sees more than several spending their lives essentially hooked up to the dream-internet when he recruits Dileep Rao’s Yusuf earlier in the movie. They’re there dreaming their lives away, preferring to spend 18 hours a day—potentially eons in dream time—living in a seeming fantasy. But Cobb and the audience alike are challenged to ask who are we to judge them?

In a world where storytellers like Nolan create just one of an infinite variety of abstractions and “subsets of reality” to get lost in, be it as film or television, video games, social media, literature, comic books, or more, is it really so horrible to find a form of truth in a lie? Nolan would probably argue not since Inception is every bit the manifesto for its self-reflective storyteller as The Prestige is.

While that earlier magician-minded movie acts as an obvious full-length metaphor about cinema and storytelling being a kind of magic trick, Inception is similarly a parable for the role of filmmakers in sharing their dreams with an audience that wants to get lost in a subset of reality. Like Nolan, DiCapiro’s Cobb is a blond haired and exceedingly well-groomed director masterminding an illusion that will cause maximum catharsis on his mark: billionaire Robert Michael Fischer (Cillian Murphy), but also us. And like any good director, Cobb assembles the best crew he can find alongside his production designers (Ariadne), cinematographer and assistant directors (Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Arthur), and actors (Tom Hardy’s Eames). Saito is even on hand to be both the caring producer and shrewd studio moneyman breathing down Cobb’s neck.

Together they create a world that exists only in scenes and shots, largely empty warehouses and soundstages occupied by a bit of artifice, or a lone street corner in Paris redressed for a specific and fleeting purpose. But when these elements are combined by a gifted group of storytellers, they create a subset of reality. And audiences, like the susceptible Fischer, populate the gaps and holes in the fantasy with their own imagination. Hopefully, in the rare instance, the fantasy can even be so emotionally powerful that it shapes the subconscious of the person who experiences it, potentially implanting an idea that could change the very essence of who we are. It happens to a cathartically drained Fischer, and it’s likely happened to you too with one movie or another.

“We bring the subject into that dream and they fill it with their subconscious,” Cobb tells Ariadne. And if the dream is rich enough, and the subset believable enough to pass as reality, then our minds will do the rest—like obsessing over the falter of a spinning top 10 years after a film cut to black.

Prologue

Are meetings random? Or is our whole life from the moment of birth scheduled by the minute by someone like God, or the Devil? .. Someone who creates fate. Someone above us. Who is stronger than us. Who is more dangerous… Someone who planned these meetings for us. Or one single meeting, after which the countdown of life went not for minutes, not for days, but for whole years.

I don’t even know which is better.

If only I knew…

Ten years.

The Creator gave me ten years.

Ten years of living side by side with your enemy.

With someone I’ve known since childhood. With the one who protected me from the cruelty and injustice of the world, risking his own skin. With the one with whom I had my first kiss, my first intimacy… With the one with whom I planned to spend all my days until the last…

However, that’s how it happened: «All my days to the last.»

I loved and was devoted to the man who once killed me.

***

I don’t know what sparked my interest in the strange little boy who moved into the house next door with his parents and twin sister ten years ago, but not a day went by that I didn’t look out of my window. room, hoping to see the shaggy blond head of a neighbor swinging on a swing in the yard.

In contrast to his grouchy and sometimes overly active sister, the boy seemed lonely and withdrawn. So strange and atypical for our small town that willy-nilly attracted attention. It seemed as if the most complex processes were taking place in the head of this child … As if he was constantly thinking about something, thinking, solving riddles.

Alien Boy . “So the children teased him.

Sunny-eyed boy . — That’s what I called him.

Gold was in his eyes. Most likely, this was one of the reasons that aroused my interest in this person. His eyes were shining! For me, in every way. My whole world was in those eyes. And I until the last believed that his world is me.

How wrong I was…

I was the first to approach him. I just ran across the road one warm sunny day and stopped at the swing, on which my silent neighbor was swinging alone.

“Hi,” she smiled. — I’m Mika, your neighbor.

The boy did not answer. Looking ahead, he pushed off the ground with worn sneakers and swayed higher and higher.

— Hey, what’s your name? Still smiling, she exclaimed.

I knew the name of the boy, but I could not spoil such an important and significant moment for me with this knowledge — the moment of our acquaintance. It took me two weeks to muster the courage to do this. It’s not that he scared me like the other children, he was alarming. And that made him even more drawn to him. Irresistibly pulled.

The neighbor swayed higher and higher. Long and snow-white strands of hair flew up to the cloudless sky and fell back into her eyes.

I was smiling. I liked watching him.

— I bet I can go higher?! she exclaimed, and for the first time the boy looked into my eyes. With such an adult conscious look that goosebumps involuntarily ran down the skin.

Then I did not understand this feeling, but now I understand that it was at that moment that something warm and quivering was born in my heart.

The boy smiled, jumped off the swing and nodded his shaggy head at me:

– Come on. Bet you can’t?

***

The clock was ticking. The minutes slipped away like sand through fingers. The months melted away like ice cream in the hot sun. And the years … and my years were ending.

— Is he a werewolf or a vampire? — put forward versions about the color of the eyes of my neighbor Shirley during joint overnight stays at my house. — Well, you know, like Scott McCall at the moment of transformation.

— It’s time for you to quit TV shows.

– What does he smell like?

— Usually.

— Is he strong?

— Enough! He is an ordinary guy.

— Oh, sorry, I forgot that you and him … well . .. of that .

— We are not «that one»! — I broke out for the umpteenth time in the evening. “We’re just… friends!”

“Ah, if that’s what they call it now…” Shirley giggled.

Gave her an angry look:

– Alec is the most attentive, honest and bravest guy I know, so envy in silence!

“Yeah, yeah,” Shirley chuckled. “And he even has a name, like that one of the hunters.”

— I’m telling you: quit serials!

***

We were friends for five years.

On my fifteenth birthday, Alec kissed me for the first time.

We both lost our virginity at sixteen… and it was amazing. It didn’t feel like it hurt. It was amazing to understand who this is happening to for the first time and that it will remain so until the end of time.

Me and him. Our bond has become stronger. Now we belonged to each other in every sense. Alec was gentle, affectionate…Alec was always like that with me. Unlike those to whom he beat the muzzle more than once.

“You asked for it yourself” , she assured herself. Now, I think it’s wrong.

Turned a blind eye to his rudeness and harshness towards other people. He didn’t even get along with Shirley. But I found a common language with my mother and father.

Amazing.

Our ancestors also found a common language and even often talked about the wedding. But Alec and I never talked about it. Where should we hurry?..

Indeed, there was nowhere to hurry. In any sense.

Alec loved me and I thought that was enough.

I didn’t need anyone else — only Alec: caring, attentive, selfless, tall, handsome, with a perfect body, fair skin and hair as white as a swan feather. I still sometimes think about what he found in someone like me: she is far from being a beauty and her character won’t pull for an award. Normal. I am normal. And he is not.

Red-haired with blue eyes. I hate skirts and heels. I prefer jeans and comfortable shoes. I don’t eat healthy food and I don’t exercise. My room is a constant mess, and my head is even worse. And more than life, I love photography. Especially Alec. Such… not right for me… perfect Alec.

Why, we don’t even look at each other. Absolutely!

“But despite everything, we are together. And we have our whole life ahead of us” , I thought.

Four more happy years passed together.

He loved me, and I loved him, my Alec.

A boy with sunny eyes.

The boy whom fate chose to be my executioner.

***

My story is not about aliens, vampires or werewolves. There are no fallen angels, no demons, and no hunters in my story. My story… it’s too weird to try to explain in a nutshell. So weird you won’t believe it.

This is a story about my love.

About my life.

About my death.

And about something… that’s in between.

– Do you really think we will sit on a cloud and talk about the sea?

— Yes, I firmly believe that.

Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door)

– Yes, mom, you already asked.

— You know I can’t be late for this meeting, the boss will kill me!

She shouldered her phone, shifted her shopping bags to her other arm, and started rummaging around in her backpack looking for the keys to her father’s Chevy. My father always leaves the car for my use when he goes on long business trips. He is an archaeologist, so I don’t even want to say how much our house resembles an archaeological museum.

— Mika! Mom screamed into the phone.

Exhaled in annoyance, holding the phone tighter so it wouldn’t slip away.

— I’ll be there in half an hour, Mom!

— Why so long?

She opened the door, threw the bags into the back seat and got behind the wheel.

“Because I still have to go somewhere else,” she said reservedly.

Mom was silent. And the tone of her voice changed to a conspiratorial one:

— So. .. what do you have planned today, kids? Five years together, huh? Not weakly so …

— Ma-a-am …

Mom laughed:

– Okay, what about the apartment? When are you moving?

— Alec is doing it. Let’s talk at home, okay? I’m already driving.

She hung up and dropped her mobile into the seat next to her.

“If only I knew… If I only guessed… I would definitely talk to her again.”

A smile involuntarily spread across his face. A couple of weeks ago, Alec finally offered to move in together! To be honest, I thought I would grow old until he decides. And so it happened! Hallelujah!

I don’t know what stopped him before, because the question of living together away from his parents has been up in the air for two years now. And I would not say that Alec is an exemplary boy, or a sissy, rather the opposite, so I was always surprised by his categorical refusal to rent an apartment somewhere in the city center. Just the two of us and no one else. No one knocks on your door at the most inopportune moments, no one gives you advice on how to protect yourself several times a week (Alec’s mom has an obsession), and no one gives you a wolf look when you come to your boyfriend’s house … And I’m talking about his twin sister. I don’t know why Allison hates me so much. He just hates that’s all. There is nothing to even discuss.

I have no idea what kind of enlightenment happened in Alec’s head, but he did it! We will live together!

“Let’s live together…

Do you understand now? I closed my eyes to everything. For all the oddities, for all the understatement, for all the suspicious actions on the part of my boyfriend. I loved him too much, so I did not notice anything around. I only saw him. I only thought about him. Lived for them.

And there were so many hints.

Stupid…

On the way home, I stopped by the jewelry store to pick up a white gold bracelet — my anniversary gift to Alec. I know he will get mad, he will say that he shouldn’t have given him such expensive gifts … But now is the wedding season, so I have enough part-time work as a photographer, I have money, unlike a permanent job. But I will definitely get a job somewhere, it’s not in vain that I went to the academy. This is a separate story, and… it doesn’t matter anymore.

A bracelet with an engraved sun on one of the hollow links is sure to please him. And if you don’t like it, I’ll make you wear it anyway. One way or another, Alec will give up. As, for example, with an apartment — I have achieved my goal.

After the jewelry store, I stopped by the elderly Mrs. Denver. She called five times yesterday to make sure that our contract was in force. The Denvers are away for the weekend, and poor Mr. Lapus has nowhere to settle. Such a healthy “moose” of leopard color. Cat, I mean. A very cute creature. I got attached to him. Denvers often go to their daughter in another city, and there is a granddaughter with an allergy to all kinds of wool, so Lapus is a frequent visitor to my parents’ house.

So there was more per passenger in my dad’s Chevy, and now I’m definitely on my way home.

Lights were on in my bedroom windows. Alec.

Mom met me at the door, grabbed a dress for a business meeting and rushed off to change.

I took the grocery bags to the kitchen, let Mr Lapus out of the carrier and stood in front of the mirror. Today there was a studio shoot for a newlywed couple, so I had to dress decently. Even put on heels. Feet are on fire.

I wonder if Alec will like this tight sky blue dress that barely covers her ass? Definitely like it.

She smiled, picked up the box with the bracelet from the table and walked up the stairs.

She stopped in front of the door to her room and took a deep breath.

“Even now I remember those feelings. Now that I am no more. I remember the jitters that awoke in my body at the mere sight of Alec. I remember how my pulse quickened from each, even a fleeting touch. I remember how there was not enough air from our passionate kisses. How I trembled and drowned in euphoria, feeling it with my whole body …

Alec and I dated for five years. And they were even more familiar. But every time I saw him, it was like it was the first time.

We were made for each other. Our love was envied. She was admired. She was set as an example.

Stupid people.

Stupid me.”

Alec was sitting on my bed and stroking the strings of the guitar. That’s right — stroked. Alec can’t act, and neither can I. This ancient instrument, covered in inscriptions and autographs of unknown persons, once belonged to my grandmother. Oh yeah…my grandma was hot! She traveled half the world with her indie rock band. And she also led a very active lifestyle and died in the mountains three years ago — a collapse. After that, I took the guitar and a few other valuable things for myself, just as a memory.

My heart fluttered in my chest like a huge butterfly as Alec looked up at me with his «sunny» eyes. Even breathing quickened — that’s how he acted on me, that’s how he looked. It’s like it’s not him, but me. It is as if the sun has settled in my eyes, as if it is my beauty that can control the universe. It’s like… like I’m everything to him.

“Hi,” she smiled and slammed the door behind her.

Usually, every time we met, wherever it took place, Alec dropped everything or interrupted the conversation and kissed me first. Now he just watched. Silently. piercingly. Attentively.

God, this black shirt and dark jeans suits him so well. An unusually beautiful contrast with fair skin and white hair. Only Alec usually doesn’t wear shirts, prefers more comfortable clothes. Did you make an exception in honor of our anniversary?

Nice. But strange.

“Hi,” he finally answered and lifted the corners of his lips in a languid smile, gliding his gaze over my figure.

“Ah, this,” she snorted, shrugging her shoulders, “shooting in the studio. I’ll change my clothes now.

– Why hurry? Alec smiled wider, put the guitar on the bed and walked over to me. He placed his hands gently around my waist and pulled me towards him. I wrapped my arms around his neck and lifted my head.

Nothing in this world compares to the taste of his lips. I could touch them forever, feel the warmth and sweet taste. As if the angel himself kissed Alec on the lips and gave him to me.

Feel how his tongue plays with mine, how warm breath slides over the skin, how hands sink lower and lower, climbing under the hem of the dress …

“Mom … hasn’t left yet,” she whispered abruptly against Alec’s lips. “And she will definitely come to say goodbye.” You know.

«Say goodbye word-prophecy. That evening, my mother actually came to my place to say goodbye.”

“Okay,” Alec smiled and went back to the bed to the guitar, ran his fingers over the strings and this time it sounded like… like a melody.

My eyebrows arched involuntarily:

– Since when have you been playing?

Alec looked at me lazily from under his eyebrows, grinned disarmingly and simply replied:

– It’s all you, Mika.

— What am I?

Alec looked into my eyes piercingly, and a new herd of goosebumps raced across my skin. I say it every time. Every time he did that to me. I just couldn’t believe my luck. Many people remain single until the end of their days, and I met my soulmate at the age of ten. And he is with me. Always will be.

«These thoughts did not turn out to be prophecy.»

“You are the best thing I have,” Alec said heartily. “You are all I have.

“Don’t talk like that,” she frowned, “at least you still have parents. And sister. Even if it’s a bitch.

Alec chuckled low and looked down at the guitar.

The tool literally came to life in his hands. I couldn’t believe! When did you learn to play so skillfully? Even my grandmother would be delighted! Frankly, I felt uneasy, the surprise, although pleasant, but too unexpected. I thought… we don’t have secrets from each other.

Fifteen minutes later, mother came into the room, as usual without knocking. She smiled like a contented Cheshire cat and, telling them to have fun, but chastely, rushed off to the meeting.

So we were left alone. Mr Lapus doesn’t count.

– Well, what shall we do? I see you dressed up,” she nodded at Alec’s shirt with a smile.

– Do you want to go somewhere?

— I don’t know. Thought you already had an idea.

Alec did not answer. Just looked at me. It’s like he’s about to say something serious, but he can’t make up his mind.

“I have a present for you,” I said, and handed Alec the box with the bracelet.

He frowned, as I predicted. He turned gloomy, opened the lid, hooked the bracelet with his index finger and brought it to his eyes.

“Mika,” he said sternly.

— I don’t even want to hear it! interrupted, snatched out the bracelet and put it on his wrist. “Can I give you something worthwhile for once in my life?”

“You already gave me everything I need,” Alec replied firmly, still frowning. — And even more …

— Come on, — she grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, pulled him to her and pressed her lips to her lips.

Alec grabbed my waist and rolled me over onto my back. The taste of his lips was mind boggling. She couldn’t think of anything. Only about his lips; about strong hands caressing my bare skin; about the smell … intoxicating, filling all of me without a trace. Each time, I almost choked with pleasure.

Alec pulled away from my lips, ran his fingertips down my cheek, and tucked a lock of my red hair behind my ear.

– Mika…

– Did you like it? – she interrupted, climbing her palms under his shirt and with pleasure feeling the hard muscles of the back roll under the smooth skin.

— Bracelet. Wear it, okay?

Alec did not answer.

She got out from under his arm, brushed her hair back and looked resolutely into his face:

– What is the matter with you?

— In what way? Alec sighed wearily.

— Straight. Is it… because of the apartment? Is there something wrong. You changed your mind?

Another pause. Well, sure, I changed my mind.

“No,” he finally answered, rubbing his wrist with the bracelet with his palm; looked at him: — I like it.

Exhaled:

— Good. Now tell me what’s wrong with you?

What’s wrong with his face?.. Tense. Gloomy. Even the eyes don’t seem as bright as usual.

And then he just looked at the wall clock, the hands of which showed ten minutes to six, and with a noisy sigh got to his feet. He reached into the pocket of his jeans and, smiling weakly, handed me a bunch of keys.

I jumped out of bed screaming, unable to believe what I was seeing!

– Alec! Alec, is that them?! They, right?! Keys to our apartment! Did you take it off?.. Damn! You took it off!!! — I threw myself on his neck, and Alec immediately picked me up and circled me above the floor.

— Your gift is much better than mine! — she squealed, tightly squeezing him in her arms. — Crap! We will live together! You and me! God, am I dreaming, or have I died and gone to heaven?!

At the same moment, a wide sincere smile flitted from Alec’s face, a shadow fell on his face, and anxiety flashed in his eyes.

— Are you not happy? – frowned.

— Me? Alec forced a smile, looking away. — I’m glad you’re happy.

— And yourself?

“I love you, Mika,” suddenly changed the subject, as if avoiding questions, pulled me to him and kissed me hard.

The second wake-up call — something very strange is happening.

“Hey,” she broke off the kiss and looked into her golden eyes, “are you sure everything is all right?”

“I wanted to see you happy,” Alec said softly, stroking my back. And now I see that you are happy.

I smiled doubtfully:

– But I am always happy with you. And now even more! Because you don’t have to see your sister’s displeased face every time I cross the threshold of your house.

“She’s not that dissatisfied after all,” Alec chuckled.

— Allison hates me and don’t argue! Well, and … — She reached out to his ear, touched the earlobe with her lips and said in a languid voice: — And now we will no longer need to wait until no one is left at home, or until everyone goes to bed, and you will make your way to me through the window.

Kissed him behind the ear, touched the hot skin with her tongue, and left a wet path all the way to the collarbone, climbing into the collar of his shirt.

Alec inhaled noisily through his nostrils — I always liked to watch his reaction to my touches … This once again proved that we were made for each other.

“What an idiot”…

Passion flared up between us at lightning speed. It’s like a hurricane that is never calm. Every time this happened, the world began to rotate, the earth left from under the feet, there was no balance left. What is balance even when my body is in Alec’s hands? ..

He lifted me off the floor and lowered me onto the bed, pulled up the hem of my tiny dress and positioned my thighs between my legs. Our lips met again, in a bright, passionate, hungry kiss. Rapid breathing and blood seething in the ears — all that I heard. His scent was everything she breathed. Alec is everything she lived for.

Naughty fingers convulsively unbuttoned the buttons on his shirt.

– God, why are there so many of them? she moaned, and Alec kissed my mouth again.

“I love you, Mika,” he whispered, covering my neck with hot kisses, and I finally finished the battle with the buttons on his shirt, pulled off the sleeves and threw it aside.

“I love you,” Alec continued to whisper.

“I love you too,” almost choking and arching her back from his caresses.

— I love you. Only you,” Alec said. – Only you…

The third bell.

“Something happened to him”, was sure.

I would have known… that this “something” should have happened to me.

Alec kept pulling up my dress.

“We need to get rid of him,” she got up for a second and pulled the dress over her head.

At the same moment, the guitar strings tinkled… “Would you like to play something?”

But Alec wasn’t going to play. He clenched the strings into a fist and wrenched them from their holders with bearish force. He left the thickest one in his hand, abruptly approached me and tightened the metal thread around my neck. He threw me on my stomach, clasped his legs with his, grabbed both wrists with one hand and leaned on me with his whole body, while his right hand tightened the string more and more.

Pain. Fear. Shock. A shock so powerful that Alec might not have held me, I still didn’t resist.

“I am sleeping. This is a dream. This can’t really be happening,” stupid thoughts immediately filled my head. “Not Alec. Is that Alec? It’s Alec! My. My beloved Alec. What is he doing? Kills me?».

Prank? Joke? Cruel reality?

There are no words to describe everything that was happening at that moment in my head and in my trampled dying heart. This is madness, the most real madness!

“He will let me go. It’s about to let go.» But Alec tightened the noose more and more.

Only my loud grunting coming out of my mouth broke the silence in the room. Alec didn’t make a sound. Just choked. Just killed me.

Finally something clicked in my head. She began to kick, trying to scream, but nothing came out; total groaning — not a word. Dark spots danced before my eyes, the room swirled along with the rows of photographs on the wall, along with Alec’s smiles, his hugs and kisses.

I was drowning. I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t scream, I couldn’t throw off his body, and I couldn’t ask a question that even after death would not give me peace: «Why»?

It didn’t take long for the body to resist. Blood bloomed on the white sheets beneath me as the string cut through my skin. The pain grew. Dark spots before my eyes turned into a salute, there was not enough air, my lungs groaned, consciousness turned off. In the last seconds, I heard his voice: Alec was screaming. Loud and desperate.

“Maybe because I don’t want to die for so long?”

I didn’t understand a word. A buzzing in my ears, hot tears burned my cheeks, heavy eyelids drooped, demanding eternal sleep. She fell face down into the mattress and let her eyes close. At that moment, the body felt light, and Alec’s footsteps sounded on the parquet floor. He let me go, but it was too late.

“This is how I died on one of the happiest days of my life, with a bunch of keys under my stomach. The keys to my apartment with Alec.

ANAKO — artist, freelancer, explores the theme of the mutual influence of art and disability

Annotation
Essay-reflection on the exhibition “The Service of Time. The nature of duration, overcoming and affect» from the point of view of a young artist who is trying to rethink the challenges of physical limitations and reflect this experience in reflections on her life, the peculiarities of the sense of time, art and the possibilities of self-realization in it.

Art Transforms Disability
or
Disability Transforms Art

Time, its duration and consistency, overcoming physical limitations, physicality, the work of the spirit, affect — I try to understand these complex concepts in their simple (sometimes too simple) life dimension last time.

Thanks to the exhibition «Time Service» I met with artists who turned out to be very necessary to me now 2 . And these are, first of all, Nikita Alekseev, Teichin Xie, He Yunchang, Vitaly Komar and others.

The exhibition prompted to learn more about these artists and their work. The horizon brightened…

I realized that drawing, which I have been doing with pleasure since childhood and which is now given with great difficulty, 3 remains one of the few things that I do not mind wasting my energy and my time on. And even if I still have to figure out how to do it, but now there is no doubt that I will do it anyway.

Having an art background and a sincere interest in art, I am constantly trying to understand what it is and whether the experience that I am going through now has anything to do with art. And if not, then what is it then.

YOU IST KUNST? 4

I am 4 years old. I play with books from my grandfather’s library. Reproductions by Modigliani. Why do Lunia Chekovskaya have such strange eyes? Frightening, alluring… I watch again and again.

YOU IST KUNST?

Me 6. Painting lessons. Watercolor is so easy to create a mood. Wet paper, a drop of paint…

VAS IST KUNST?

I am 8, looking for branches and roots in the forest, they make funny goblin, then they live with us.

YOU IST KUNST?

14. Poems about love. Someone so accurately conveyed in words what I feel. And I draw on birch bark and also «transmit something».

YOU IST KUNST?

15. Falling in love, inspiration, constant excitement, joy. It is enough to walk in the park, and it seems that there is happiness…

Later, I realized what the feeling that I experience every time I sit down at the table with paints is like — falling in love. The same flow of excitement and joy.

YOU IST KUNST?

16. The horror of the exam. I am preparing to enter Stroganovka. Tutors, constant running around huge Moscow. Weak and twisted legs. I draw. I draw. I draw. I’m getting tired. The teacher says that my stroke has become «hairy».

YOU IST KUNST?

17. Doctor. Diagnosis. I don’t understand anything. I am applying for a degree in film and television artist. The movie seemed like a passing fad. But no. The poetics of Fellini and the creepy aesthetics of Lars Von Trier and David Lynch stayed with me.

I want to be in time everywhere. I go worse. I write worse. Night clubs. High-heeled ankle boots are in fashion. Bought. Expensive. I couldn’t walk in them.

YOU IST KUNST?

18. Love. Sex. Lots of sex. Friends. Sessions. Exhibitions. Droppers. The security guard did not let me into the institute — he decided that she was very drunk. And now I just have such a gait;)

YOU IST KUNST?

21. Journey to Berlin. It seems that I left the Bunker Gallery a different person. A terrible space of the past, filled with modern meanings and «popcorn» of today’s life. Nothing comes and goes, everything coexists in one dimension.

What is contemporary art?

“For me, this is a really old question, because it is not very clear what contemporary art is, how long it has been contemporary, to whom it is contemporary. I’m not at all sure that time is linear» 5 . Nikita Alekseev

“Teichin Xie in Performance removed all content and contexts in order to experience something like the pure passage of time. He did this by taking to the extreme the way our society equates time with work.
