Thank goodness The Legend of Legacy is on a portable system, because once you start you’ll find time anywhere to play: you’ll get in a few more rounds of grinding on the bus, or a few steps closer to your self-imposed goal while waiting in line in a government office. The classic JRPG elements combined with the characters, the story, the graphics, and the music make this a game not to miss out on.

At the end of the day, Legend of Legacy provides a satisfying experience, with plenty to explore, and lots of challenging combat to experience.

Some will find the lack of a clear narrative disappointing while others might find the grind-heavy gameplay a bit of a chore, but for many, this throwback to old school JRPG sensibilities will likely prove a refreshing and pleasingly nostalgic experience.

We are facing an ambitious project that showcases several layers of deep game mechanics. With a high level of challenge and an exquisite art direction, it is overshadowed by its limited narrative, poor personality of the characters and the ambiguous leveling system.

The Legend of Legacy is an unorthodox RPG that focuses less on its narrative and plot and a lot more on the combat experience, as well as audio and visual environments. While lacking charisma and an overall involving universe, The Legend of Legacy will satisfy those looking for fun and addictive combats backed up by marvelous artwork and a magnificent soundtrack.

The Legend of Legacy comes so close to be a compelling role-playing game, but it just doesn’t do enough to earn the amount of patience it requires of players, let alone reward it.

This game is not to be taken lightly as both its exploration and combat will repeatedly kick you in the teeth. It is very easy to miss key items and mini bosses will sneak up on you and kill your entire party in one hit. The story of the game is left bare an waits for you to discover it on your own as you explore the many regions of Avalon. Overall this is a game for those who love difficulty and hate all the hand holding in modern RPGs; to many this game will be a much needed breath of fresh air.… Expand

Do not be fooled! If you are an RPG veteran that is looking for a truly unique battle system and you’re tired of the same old ‘boy from small village is the world’s only hope’ cliché, then this game was made for you.
Legacy will not hold your hand because it wants to be discovered. Pick your favorite character and uncover the game’s secrets along with them. Approach this game with an open mind and you will be rewarded with a deep and satisfying experience that will show up on all of the «Top 10 Underrated Games» lists of the major outlets that are currently letting it pass them by.… Expand -

For me I enjoy the battle system, exploration, difficulty in fights. But some elements may turn off people like the RNG stat leveling and skill awakening system, or the lack of a story, but those elements didn’t really bother me. This is the type of game you don’t really play for very long stretches of time, as things can get very grindy. But I enjoy what I play from this game.… Expand

While the combat can become interesting at higher levels, this game is plagued by many issues. Notably, it achieves its high difficulty ratingWhile the combat can become interesting at higher levels, this game is plagued by many issues. Notably, it achieves its high difficulty rating by making the battles horribly unbalanced in favour of enemy MOBs. The story is utterly lacking, which in turn makes the characters bland. The leveling system is poor — it takes hours to bring your active party to a decent level, and since other characters you recruit do not level unless they are active, this basically locks you into either the same three characters for the entire game, or hours of additional grinding. Overall, this is a playable, but mediocre game. If you like grindfest dungeon crawlers, give it a shot. If not, there are dozens of better JRPGs out there to try.… Expand

Playable, but not worth the full price of a newly released game, would sum up my opinion. After playing for nearly 8 hours already, I can sayPlayable, but not worth the full price of a newly released game, would sum up my opinion. After playing for nearly 8 hours already, I can say that the game lacks direction in any meaningful sense. I will admit that the combat is satisfyingly challenging, and entertaining. It’s just complex enough (later on) that having the same 3 fights over and over isn’t a complete bore.
Unfortunately, the game is an unbreakable montage of exactly that: with the exception of the now-and-again boss monster, the mobs are repetitive. It would not be so bad if the level grinding were not such a dice roll: there is no indication of progress, and leveling anything up at all appears to be based at least halfway on chance. To lend credence to this point: I currently have one character with over 20 unlocked/learned skills and spells, and the remainder barely have 10, despite having been in all the same battles and, in one case, used all of the same equipment.
Many people have mentioned that the story is transparent, if there at all, and the characters are bland. I agree completely. Nothing will attach you to the characters beyond their individual opening scenes, which only play for the one you select as the main character. The world has lore, though all of it is given as relatively vague poetry, and explains nothing of note.
Be cautious of reviews giving high marks and downplaying the vast ’emptiness’ of this game by claiming «it will not hold your hand, the game is challenging for a reason, etc.» I have played many games with much more difficult and frustrating content, and even games with much more useless (or utterly missing) tutorials and explanations. Those sorts of games can be fun, as long as they have redeeming traits, such as interesting characters, a story (any would be a plus), rewarding grinding (not a lottery of skills and spells you might level up or master at random), or something other than a unique combat system.
Final score. 3/10. It’s a pretty game, has good music, and an interesting combat system. It lacks very nearly everything else, unfortunately. If ‘JRPG’ stood for ‘Japanese Repetitive Pointless Grindfest,’ I would give it a perfect score.
Buy this game for a unique combat system, and nothing else. Definitely buy it used, or borrow it from someone unfortunate enough to have already paid for it, like I did.… Expand

The best thing about rpgs are usually the story and the battle system. This game has a good battle system but not much of a story.

Played the demo a while back and decided to get this game. It’s a game based on exploration. You fight monsters, gain stats and abilities randomly (easier when fighting harder enemies) and fill out the map. There isn’t much story to the game but the gameplay mechanics can keep you working on your party for a long time. It’s easy to play and not one where you need to invest hours at a time to enjoy. The game is a long jrpg which can take over 50 hours to complete. Love this game when I don’t have allot of time.

I was looking for some game to kill some free time and hadn’t picked my 3DS up in quite a long time. The Legend of Legacy, which I so luckily stumbled on, offered me that and more. This game will give you hours upon hours of gameplay. Much more than the average RPG. However, these hours come at a cost of grinding. With little to no tutorial at the start of the game, you’re left to your own devices to figure out how to traverse this seemingly easy but deeply complex game. The Legend of Legacy is not like traditional RPGs in the sense of the leveling system. Characters do not have an experience bar. Instead, there are three things each character levels up; Attack, Guard, and Support. You can think of these three things as stats. These stats are both for the general character and are also attached to ANY skill a character has. Throughout the game you’re leveling up your characters’ general stats and their skill stats (which keep in mind are not one in the same). Skill stats are leveled up individually resulting in a very tedious grind (example being leveling up attack or guard for skill A does not result for leveling up attack or guard for skill B). Another difference than the traditional RPG is the formations you create to use in battle. The party system (maximum of 3 characters in a party) uses different stances to give characters an advantage in battle. For example, some specific move in a ‘healing’ type stance can give my healing skills more health point regeneration. The combinations of individual stats, skill stats, and stances becomes very complex as you progress through the game. The storyline however leaves something to be desired as you’re driven (storyline-wise) by a very bland female narrator reading off a paragraph of text every few hours with a few background images cycling behind the text. The NPCs aren’t at all responsive and give you no hints at all on how to progress in the story. The quest maps are blank and you will have to traverse the quest maps to fill them in. Enemies will spot you if you get in their detection radius and will chase you forever unless you get out of view of them or put an object in their pathing. Minibosses will jump out at you and these mini-boss and boss battles are grueling and difficult.————————————————————————- Graphics: The graphics are kind of a mix of old school pixelated 3D characters in the 3DS’s 3D screen. Did I mention 3D? The characters’ faces rarely change expression. The world’s maps have this weird thing where terrain such as trees, rocks, etc will pop up like some flip-up book when you come into view of it. At first, for me, this was a little disorienting but I got used to it pretty quickly. The terrain graphics aren’t anything spectacular BUT they are very charming and add to the game’s rpg feel. Character designs for the 7 heroes/heroines are appealing and charming as well. ———————————————————————- If you’re looking for a game that will offer a challenge and many, many, many hours of grinding then this is the game for you. I’d recommend it to both casual and hardcore gamers. Where The Legend of Legacy falls a little flat on story line it makes up for in addicting gameplay and a fresh, complex battle and leveling system.

This is not a bad game, but I will say that the instructions on how to play this game and what to do is VERY vague. The battle system is okay, I am disappointed that there is VERY limited options on gear and when you do wear it nothing changes. Weapons do a little but not clothing. It seems really difficult at times and if you are on a map you have not completed you just die. Start from a saved point. I have about 4 to 5 hours into it and I still can’t beat a lot of enemies and I have no idea how they figure out what skills you are leveling up because there is no experience gauges. This is a good game but trust me when I say if you don’t like hardcore games don’t get this.
