We have a habit, in the gaming industry, of declaring things “The Year Of ___.” 2013 was The Year Of Luigi. 2014 was The Year Of Luigi’s Death Stare. 2019 is The Year Of Gooigi. However, if Gooigi had not transformed into an unassailable, medium-defining phenomenon, we might also be tempted to call this The Year Of Auto Chess.

Auto Chess is a mode in which players spend gold to recruit heroes, who they can then strategically pair with other heroes and combine with copies of themselves to increase their power. Each round, these heroes automatically duke it out. Players repeat this process until only one is left standing. After the Dota 2 mod took Steam by storm earlier this year, Valve announced its own version, called Dota Underlords. And now Riot’s League of Legends-themed spin on the deck builder has turned Twitch into its personal plaything. Teamfight Tactics, as it’s known, has been on top of Twitch ever since an hour after its release yesterday. As of this publishing, it had nearly 200,000 concurrent viewers, beating perennial first-placer Fortnite by about 60,000. This, on its own, is not entirely surprising. League of Legends generally sits near the top of Twitch itself, and big, new games have a tendency to ascend on the platform thanks to the curiosity of both streamers and potential players.

There are, however, a few things worth noting in this case: Teamfight Tactics is peaking at much higher numbers than Dota 2‘s Auto Chess mod ever has, positively dwarfing the original Auto Chess’ all-time high of 65,000 concurrent viewers back in March. This makes sense, given that the mod version of Auto Chess hasn’t gotten an official push from Valve in the same way Teamfight Tactics has from Riot.

Teamfight Tactics is also intended to be more accessible than Auto Chess, much like LoL is to Dota. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when the beta for Valve’s Dota Underlords becomes available to everyone sometime this week. For now, though, with all eyes currently on Teamfight Tactics, Dota 2‘s once-popular Auto Chess mod hardly has any viewers, hovering in the low thousands.

Much like Auto Chess and the typical Dota 2 crowd, Teamfight Tactics is drawing streamers who don’t normally succumb to the prickly and particular siren’s song of MOBAs. However, unlike other 2019 breakout Twitch hits like Apex Legends, this one hasn’t managed to snag many streamers from the platform’s absolute highest (read: Fortnite-playing) echelons. Viewers, then, are a bit more spread out between big but not quite enormous streamers like Lirik, Reckful, and DisguisedToast—some of which come from LoL and others of which do not.

There’s an appeal to watching streamers learn this game. DisguisedToast, for instance, is forcing himself to get 10 wins before he’ll end his stream today, and while I don’t approve of that from a labor practices standpoint, it has been rewarding to watch him learn, figure out new strategies, and, er, break the game. Teamfight Tactics is not a reflex-intensive game, meaning that viewers stand to gain strategic knowledge from streams that’s actually applicable to their own games—unlike when they watch, say, Shroud play Apex (or literally any shooter, for that matter).

While the game is a multitude of genres away from Apex, the comparison is still useful to an extent. Apex received a large streamer-centric marketing push from Electronic Arts, with a launch-day “partner” program that reportedly cost the publisher $1 million for Ninja alone. If Riot is employing any similar tactics, it’s not being particularly transparent about them—not that EA was transparent about what its partner program entailed at the time, either. Regardless, Teamfight Tactics isn’t managing the preposterous 400,000+-viewer peaks Apex did at launch.

Teamfight Tactics does, however, have another weapon worth mentioning in its holster: Riot’s history. People have been waiting for a League of Legends follow-up for eons, and while I’ve heard from sources for years that the company is stuck in a state of analysis paralysis that leads to project cancellation after project cancellation, this is the most meaningfully different thing Riot has released in years. It’s still part of LoL, sure, but it’s nearly a separate game. This has generated even more excitement, interest, and curiosity.

As ever, there’s a chance—a good chance, even—that Teamfight Tactics will fall out of Twitch’s top spot in a matter of days or weeks. It’s got momentum for now, but it’s still in beta, and has plenty of rough edges. Plus, I’m sure Nintendo will announce Gooigi Auto Chess before too much longer, and that, truly, will be checkmate (something Auto Chess does not actually have).

League of Legends developer Riot Games is trying their hand at the Auto Chess genre, now competing against Dota Underlords and others.

League of Legends is now diving into the emerging auto-battler genre with Teamfight Tactics.

Various celebrated MOBA developers have a new genre to fight over, and they’re all diving in head first at roughly the same time. Last week, Valve unveiled their take on the auto battler genre with Dota Underlords. This week, League of Legends maker Riot Games is showcasing their version called Teamfight Tactics.

In case you’re not aware of how an auto battler game works, units are placed on a board and then they duke it out against opposing units. XP and gold are gained by winning fights, which allow you to upgrade those units into better and badder versions of their former selves. Additionally, you can purchase more units to overwhelm your opponent. There are multiple options.

The first auto battler was Dota Auto Chess, a popular mod for Dota 2. The original developers, Drodo Games, were supposed to work with Valve to create a standalone version for Steam but have since left to make an Epic Games Store exclusive version. Valve then went alone and recently came out with Dota Underlords, which is currently in open beta.

Riot’s game is called Teamfight Tactics, and it has a few key differences from Dota Auto Chess and Underlords. This isn’t limited to the fact it contains League of Legends characters and not Dota characters.

First, Teamfight Tactics uses diagonal hexes instead of strictly up-and-down squares. Second, and unlike what is featured in Dota Auto Chess, matches are actually fought against a live opponent and not against an AI-controlled clone of that opponent’s army. Matches are fought head-to-head and happen in real-time.

The third difference is the shared draft. At the beginning of each match, each player will be able to select a hero from a rotating Carousel of 10 heroes. Once a unit is selected, it joins that player’s team and cannot be selected by the opponent. This draft also happens every couple of rounds of combat until the match ends with a winner.

Each match is part of a larger game against 8 players. With each match won, more damage is dealt to your opponent. Losing a match means losing health. Lose all your health and you lose the game. Winning the game simply means being the last person standing.

Downloading League of Legends is required to play Teamfight Tactics, as it is a stand-alone game mode tacked on to LoL. If it’s even half as popular as Dota Underlords, expect to see hundreds of thousands of gamers to dive into it over the next few days.

What is a league of players? How to join the league?

If you play chess on Chess . com You are already in the players’ league! Each user is automatically enrolled in a division, in a group of 50 players, immediately after they play their first game. Depending on how many games you play per week, you may or may not be able to advance to the next level.

Everyone starts the league Tree. As soon as you play your first game of the week, you will be placed in a league group along with the other 49 players who have recently played. From now on you will have time until the end of next week to earn as many points/trophies as possible .

Points/trophies

You earn points/trophies for wins and draws in head-to-head games , their number depends on the time control of the games played:

  • Bullet: Win = 3 points Draw = 1 point
  • Blitz: Win = 9 points Draw = 3 points
  • Rapid: Win = 15 points Draw = 5 points

You get more points for games in Arena . If you win the Arena game, winning will give you 4 points for the Arena and 3 points for winning the game.

Total 8 leagues. Participants are grouped into a division of 50 players within each league and compete with each other to reach the next league. The best players in the Wood league advance to the Stone league, then to the Bronze league, etc. nine0014

Politics fair games in leagues

Trophies in the league can be earned by playing regular games, arena games and participating in tournaments. Any attempts to dishonestly obtain trophies may result in the loss of all points earned or lead to the termination of the account. This includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Artificial down-rating
  • Collusion with other players

Artificial downgrade

Also known as rating manipulation, the intentional lowering of a rating against Chess.com’s rules and fair play policy (read more here). If you are caught artificially lowering your rating, you will receive a warning, your trophies will be canceled and you will be removed from the division of the week. If you are repeatedly caught artificially lowering your rating, your account will be closed. nine0014

Collusion with other players

Leagues were designed to give the game with other users bright colors. Colluding with other players to intentionally manipulate league points breaks the spirit of league play. User accounts found to be colluding will be closed.

In addition to the above, the Chess.com Fair Play Rules apply to all games in the league.

Can leave the league ?

Yes, if for some reason you no longer want to win cups for every game won or take part in a division, you can always leave the league. To do this, go to the division page and click on ‘Leave the league’ on the right side of the screen:

Once you leave a league, you will no longer see your trophies, division position, or any other league information. nine0014

Please note that by leaving the league you will lose all points for this week. Even if you join immediately you will start a new division with 0 points.

If you change your mind later, you can always come back! Just go to the page of any other user who is in the league and click on ‘Join League’ in the right corner of the screen:

You will join the same league you left. That is, if you reached the Stone league at the time you left it, then you will fall back into the Stone league even if you were absent for several months.

In a nutshell, the advice from the Riot Games concept artists boils down to:

  1. Do a lot, do it fast. The number of sketches is more important than their quality.
  2. Move from the general to the specific. When you have made a decision, do not go back to discussing it, start clarifying the details.
  3. Draw concepts as simply as possible.

To break the circle and figure out which way to go, Riot Games concept artists use the “closing door” approach. The picture below illustrates this approach. If you choose a dog, then in the next iteration you don’t go back to snakes and cats, you cut off this set of options. Next you make concepts for the dog breed. After you choose a breed, and when you have chosen, you are already finalizing the concept in accordance with the restrictions that this breed imposes. nine0014

But some people like cats, others like dogs. How then to choose. A concept artist does not draw just for the sake of beauty, he solves some problem. Sunny Pandita saw in the image of Renata a part of the villain from the old James Bond movie, so the weapon was based on the Luger pistol, aka Parabellum:

Sunny Pandita uses this to communicate with players who follow the game’s lore. Last year, Riota released the series Arcane (IMDb 9.0/10), which takes place in Renata’s homeland. Renata herself was not there, but Riota renewed the series for a second season.

Revealing that Zaun’s faction symbol is based on her company logo was an effective way to communicate that she is Zaun’s main «villain».

The concept artist can refine the details by sorting through many options. For example, hair and accessories help to reveal the image of the character.
