Bitte was?
Hast du den Artikel gelesen?
Davon steht da nichts. Allgemein steht dort fast nichts.

March 11-13, 1938, Nazi Germany annexed neighboring Austria ( Österreich ). This event is known as the Anschluss. The German word «Anschluss» is translated as «unification» or «attachment».
By annexing Austria, the Nazis violated the Treaty of Versailles and Saint-Germain. These treaties contained articles expressly forbidding the unification of Austria and Germany. The Anschluss demonstrated the Nazi contempt for the post-World War I European order. This was the first act of territorial expansion by Nazi Germany.
Other European countries did not react in any way to the violation of international treaties by the Nazis. They accepted the Anschluss, and this decision became one of the stages of the appeasement policy. Thus, Adolf Hitler continued to pursue expansionist policies with impunity.
Anschluss changed Austria. Overnight, this country ceased to exist. In the days, weeks and months that followed, all aspects of Austrian life were nazified by the forces of the Austrian and German Nazis. Many Austrians enthusiastically participated in this process. After the Anschluss, the Austrians began the persecution of the Jews living in the country, supporting the Nazi policy. The Austrians also took part in World War II. In particular, they were involved in the mass murder of European Jews.
The Anschluss was not inevitable. The same can be said about the rapid nazification of Austria. Nevertheless, it should be noted that certain historical factors contributed to these processes.
Ethnic Germans in Austria
The population of Austria between the First and Second World Wars was about 6.5 million people. Most Austrians considered themselves ethnic Germans.
At that time there were millions of people outside Germany who identified themselves as Germans. Many of them lived in areas formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire 1 , which ceased to exist in 1918 after the First World War. In its place, new states arose. Among them were Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland. Millions of inhabitants of these countries considered themselves Germans, German was the main language for them.
In the 1920s, many Austrians doubted that the economy of their state could exist without the lands formerly part of Austria-Hungary. Some have come to the conclusion that the solution to this problem requires some form of rebuilding of the empire. Others were supporters of the unification of Austria and Germany. The idea of uniting the two countries was not new. Discussions and debates about the role of Austria within the German nation-state have been going on since the 19th century.
The peace treaties that ended the First World War explicitly forbade the unification of Austria and Germany. European leaders were worried that the united state of Germany and Austria would be too big and powerful. Subsequent international financial agreements also contained the requirement to maintain Austrian independence from Germany.
Adolf Hitler’s plans for Austria
Adolf Hitler and the Nazis sought to redraw the post-World War I map of Europe. Hitler and his associates considered the post-war borders unfair and illegal. They argued that the Germans had been deprived of the right to self-determination. Changing the borders of European states allowed the Nazis to achieve two main goals:
- unite all Germans within the Nazi German Empire;
- conquer «living space» (Lebensraum) in Eastern Europe.
By annexing Austria, the Nazis achieved the first goal to a large extent.
In Hitler’s early writings and speeches, there is a desire to unite Austria and Germany. The first point of the platform of the Nazi Party (1920) was as follows:
«We demand the unification of all Germans in a Greater Germany (Großdeutschland) on the basis of the peoples’ right to self-determination.»
Hitler opens his autobiography and political manifesto, book Mein Kampf , with a description of his vision for the future relationship between Austria and Germany. He writes:
“… The unification [of Germany with Austria] is my vital task, which must be carried out by any possible means! German Austria must return to the great German homeland … One blood demands one Reich.
January 19At 33, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany. In this post, he was determined to unite Austria and Germany. However, it was impossible to talk about the complete military and diplomatic readiness of Germany to implement the foreign policy tasks set by Hitler. Therefore, Hitler and other Nazi leaders focused primarily on establishing the Nazi dictatorship. However, they continued to secretly work on plans for territorial expansion and war in Europe, begun immediately after the seizure of power.
Spread and influence of the Austrian Nazi movement
Hitler planned to gain power in Austria with the help of the Austrian Nazis. However, in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Austrian Nazi Party was weak, divided and ineffective. The opinions of party members about relations with Hitler and German party members differed. Yet by 1931, most Austrian Nazis recognized Hitler as leader. In turn, Hitler appointed a German Nazi who was to bring the Austrian party into submission.
As Hitler grew in popularity in Germany in 1931-1932, the number of Austrian Nazi supporters also began to increase. This trend became even more pronounced after Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor of Germany in January 1933.
Over the years, Austrian politics has been characterized by a high level of internal strife and politicized violence. The rise of the Nazis to power in 1933 further destabilized the situation. Seizing the moment, Austrian Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss turned Austrian democracy into a right-wing authoritarian regime under his control. This regime is known as the «corporate state» ( Ständestaat ). It is also called Austrofascism or the Dollfuss-Schuschnigg regime. The Dollfuss government was in close diplomatic relations with fascist Italy and authoritarian Hungary.
Like his allies, Chancellor Dollfuss sought to crush the Austrian left. However, Dollfuss and the Austrofascists were not Nazis.
Nazi terror campaign in Austria, 1933
In May 1933, the Austrian Nazis launched a campaign of propaganda and terror. The campaign was encouraged and funded by Germany. The goal of the Nazis was to weaken the Dollfuss regime, which they presented as powerless. They staged destructive protests, fought with political opponents and the police. The Austrian Nazis detonated tear gas bombs and explosives in Jewish-owned public places and establishments.
The Germans claimed that the Austrian authorities were treating the Austrian Nazis unfairly. At the end of May 1933, the German government introduced an economic sanction against Austria, called the «castle of 1000 marks» (1000 Mark Sperre). To enter Austria, the Germans had to pay a customs duty of 1,000 marks. This crippled the Austrian tourism industry, which was heavily dependent on Germany.
In the face of Nazi terror, the Austrian government did everything possible to maintain its power and the sovereignty of the country. June 19For 33 years, in response to the Nazi bombing that resulted in the death of people, Dollfuss imposed a ban on the activities of the Austrian Nazi Party and persons associated with it. The Nazi movement in Austria became illegal.
However, the Austrian Nazis continued to conduct illegal activities in the country. Many eagerly looked for ways to get around the ban. Thousands of Austrian Nazis fled to Germany. There they formed a paramilitary unit called the «Austrian Legion» ( Österreichische Legion ). The military training of its members was carried out by the German Nazis. The presence of the Austrian Legion threatened the Austro-German frontier.
Failed Nazi coup in Austria, July 1934
On July 25, 1934, the Austrian Nazis attempted to overthrow the government. The Vienna SS captured the Austrian Chancellery, where the Cabinet meeting was taking place. Chancellor Dollfuss was shot dead by the conspirator. Other conspirators took over the state radio station in Vienna and prematurely announced the coup. Outside of Vienna, the Austrian Nazis also rebelled against the authorities.
However, most Austrians remained loyal to the government. Austrian military and police forces quickly crushed the conspirators. The coup attempt failed. Italian dictator Benito Mussolini sent troops to the Austro-Italian border to protect the sovereignty of Austria. Mussolini, a friend and ally of Dollfuss, was infuriated by the attempted coup and the assassination of the Chancellor. Austria became a point of tension between Italy and Germany.
We now know that the coup attempt took place on the initiative of Hitler, who gave the appropriate order, presumably on June 1934 years. The putsch was planned by Hitler-appointed leader of the Austrian Nazis Theodor Habicht together with his fellow party members.
Hitler denied any involvement in the failed coup. The German Nazis claimed that their Austrian associates independently developed and implemented the coup plan. After his failure, it became clear that the Nazis would not be able to quickly capture Austria. They decided to act slowly in order to achieve a guaranteed result.
After the death of Dollfuss, Kurt von Schuschnigg became chancellor and dictator of Austria. He largely continued the authoritarian policies of his predecessor. Thousands of Austrian Nazis, including many conspirators, were placed under arrest.
Diplomatic isolation of Austria
Relations between Austria and Germany after the failed coup were a source of international tension. This was especially true of the Italian dictator Mussolini, who perceived Austria as a buffer between Italy and Nazi Germany. However, in 1935-1936, fascist Italy and Nazi Germany began to move closer. Mussolini began pressure on Schuschnigg to encourage him to cooperate with the Germans.
By the winter of 1937-1938, Austria found itself in diplomatic isolation, face to face with the growing aggression of Nazi Germany. The international community showed little interest in defending Austrian independence. By this point, both Britain and France began to regard the reunification of Austria and Germany as inevitable. The Dollfuss regime, which severely suppressed the Austrian social democratic movement in February 1934, did not enjoy sympathy in Great Britain, France and other countries. Even Mussolini could no longer guarantee the independence of Austria.
The Beginning of the End: The Berchtesgaden Agreement, February 1938
On February 12, 1938, Austrian Chancellor Schuschnigg went to meet Hitler. He intended to discuss the tension between Austria and Germany. But Hitler had other plans: he prepared for the complete taking of Austria under control. Hitler issued a three-point ultimatum:
- Austria’s foreign and military policy was subject to agreement with the German one;
- Austrian Nazi leader Arthur Seyss-Inquart gained control of the Austrian law enforcement system;
- an amnesty was announced for Austrian Nazis arrested by the Austrian authorities.
In the presence of several German generals, Hitler threatened Schuschnigg. He gave in and signed the agreement. The document is known as the Berchtesgaden Agreement, after the city where it was signed. The sovereignty and independence of Austria were undermined.
Last attempt to defend the independence of Austria
March 9, the Austrian Chancellor Schuschnigg made a last attempt to defend the independence of Austria. He announced a plebiscite (referendum). The event was to take place on Sunday, March 13, 1938.
Voters in the referendum had to support or reject the following call for Austrian independence:
“For a free and German, independent and social, Christian and united Austria! For peace, labor and equality of all who make up the People and Motherland.
The next day, propaganda materials appeared everywhere, urging voters to support the independence of Austria. Even on the streets and sidewalks, appropriate inscriptions were made. Schuschnigg hoped that the plebiscite would demonstrate to the international community the Austrians’ desire for independence. He believed that 65% of the population would be in favor of independence, and 35% would be against it.
On hearing of the plebiscite, Hitler was furious and decided to stop it.
Chronology: Anschluss, March 11-13, 1938
Anschluss occupied three days of March 1938. Despite the fact that the Nazi threat had hung over Austria for many years, people were still surprised and shocked.
Friday, March 11, 1938
March 11, Hitler presented a series of ultimatums to the Austrian government:
- Chancellor Schuschnigg cancels the plebiscite;
- Schuschnigg resigns as chancellor;
- Austrian President Wilhelm Miklas appoints Austrian Nazi Arthur Seyss-Inquart as new Chancellor.
In case of refusal to comply with these requirements, German military forces were to invade Austria. Schuschnigg complied. That same evening, the radio announced the cancellation of the upcoming plebiscite on Austrian independence.
Shortly thereafter, at 19:47, Chancellor Schuschnigg made a radio address to all the inhabitants of Austria. He announced his resignation under German pressure. Schuschnigg ordered the citizens and military forces of Austria not to resist the German army in the event of an invasion. He wanted to avoid a bloody war for the independence of Austria.
A few minutes after Schuschnigg’s resignation, people appeared on the streets with flags and swastika armbands. Now the Austrian Nazis could attack political opponents and Jews without fear of repercussions. They seized government buildings and held torchlight processions in the streets singing and praising Hitler.
As a result, the Austrian Nazis took over the country without firing a shot.
Frightened Jews, leftists and supporters of Schuschnigg tried to leave Austria. They headed for the borders of the country in the hope of having time to leave before they close. Some succeeded, but most were trapped: Austria quickly became nazified. Schuschnigg remained in Vienna and was placed under house arrest.
Saturday, March 12, 1938
After midnight on March 12, Austrian President Wilhelm Miklas reluctantly agreed to Hitler’s last demand. He appointed Seyss-Inquart Chancellor of Austria. He formed a new government of the Austrian Nazis. So there was a change of power under the pressure of Nazi Germany. But this was not enough for Hitler.
Despite the fact that the Austrians complied with all his demands, at 5 o’clock in the morning the German army crossed the border. They were greeted not with armed resistance, but with flowers and jubilation. The Austrians warmly welcomed Hitler, who came to Linz and then to Vienna.
Sunday, March 13, 1938
March 13 Austrian Chancellor, Nazi Seyss-Inquart, signed the law «On the reunification of Austria and Germany» ( Wiedervereinigung Österreichs mit dem Deutschen Reich ).
The word «reunification» was used incorrectly. Austria has never been part of the German Empire. Under this law, sometimes called the Anschluss Act, Austria was formally incorporated into Nazi Germany. The Anschluss was given the illusion of legitimacy.
Austria ceased to exist as an independent state, becoming a province ( state ) of Nazi Germany. The Nazis tried to get rid of any signs of Austrian identity. Austria as part of Nazi Germany received a new name: «Eastern Mark» (Ostmark). In German, the name of Austria in the past (and now) is Österreich , «Eastern Empire». By changing the name, the Nazis reduced Austria from an empire to a province. As part of the subsequent administrative reorganization, many names and boundaries were changed. At 19In 1942, the Nazi regime officially gave these territories the name «Alpine and Danube Reichsgau» ( Alpen- und Donau-Reichsgaue ).
The law also provided for a new plebiscite on the question of the unification of Austria with Nazi Germany. The plebiscite was scheduled for 10 April.
Violence against Jews during the Anschluss
For the 200,000 Jews living in Austria, the Anschluss was a turn for the worse.
From the evening of March 11 and in the following weeks, outbreaks of violence resembling pogroms began to occur in the country. Austrian Nazis and others attacked Jews, beat them and humiliated them. Jews were forced to clean public toilets and perform humiliating exercises. Religious Jews were especially often the victims of violence. The best-known example is the forced creation of so-called «cleaner squads» ( Reibpartien ). The Nazis forced the Viennese Jews to wash the city streets under a hail of ridicule. In particular, the Jews were forced to launder the calls for independence left over from the failed Schuschnigg plebiscite.
Austrian Jews were soon subject to the laws and discriminatory restrictions previously imposed on German Jews. Many Jews tried to leave Austria. Lines lined up at the Vienna consulates.
Nazi propaganda and Anschluss
The Nazis hailed the Anschluss as a fateful decision for the German people. They praised this act in speeches and at propaganda events.
The most famous speech was delivered by Hitler on March 15 to a large gathering of people on Heldenplatz square in the center of Vienna. In this speech, he extolled the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany. Videos and photographs of the crowds appeared in German film magazines and newspapers. The Nazis demonstrated the enthusiasm of the Austrians for the Anschluss and thus justified the illegal seizure of another country. Hitler, who returned to Berlin, was hailed as a hero.
Another opportunity for spreading propaganda was the April 10 plebiscite. Numerous Austrian institutions and leaders were drawn into the Nazis’ aggressive propaganda campaign in support of the vote. They included representatives of two institutions that were suspicious of the Nazi movement: the Austrian working class and the Catholic Church. According to the results of the referendum, about 99 percent of Austrians voted in favor of reunification with Nazi Germany. However, it should be noted that about 300,000-400,000 Austrian citizens did not take part in the referendum due to the ban. Among them were Austrian Jews, Roma and political opponents of the Nazis.
Acceptance of the Anschluss in Austria
Many Austrians contributed to the Nazification of their country. Austrian officials, military and police took a new oath of allegiance to Adolf Hitler. This was done at public celebrations, often with simultaneous parades. Various organizations and institutions adopted Nazi ideas and implemented Nazi policies. Many of them excluded Jews from membership and fired Jewish employees.
Groups that could oppose the Nazis — communists and social democrats — were suppressed by the Dollfuss-Schuschnigg regime. Many members of these movements emigrated. Opponents of Nazism who remained in Austria began to be persecuted by the SS and the police. The Nazis quickly deployed Gestapo offices in Austria to hunt down political opponents.
Anschluss as Hitler’s first step to conquer Europe
Anschluss — the first act of territorial aggression and expansion of the Nazi regime. It became a turning point for the foreign policy of Nazi Germany. The international community did not intervene in any way and did not stop the Anschluss. Nazi Germany was not punished for violating international treaties. Consequently, the Anschluss is one of the first and most significant examples of appeasement tactics adopted by the international community in response to the aggressive policies of Adolf Hitler.
Germany’s annexation of Austria was a significant shock to the post-World War I international order. Just six months later, Nazi Germany initiated a crisis in the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia. In September 1938, the leaders of Italy, France and Britain met with Hitler in Munich to discuss the matter. They submitted to Hitler and ceded this territory to Nazi Germany. This was done on the condition that the rest of Czechoslovakia be inviolable.
In March 1939, the Nazis violated this agreement and occupied part of Czechoslovakia, including Prague. Finally, in September 1939, Nazi German troops invaded Poland, in an act of territorial aggression and expansion that marked the beginning of World War II.
