Allein die Entstehungsgeschichte von The Book of Unwritten Tales: Die Vieh Chroniken könnte Seiten füllen: Das Spiel war rund zwei Jahre in Entwicklung – für ein klassisches Adventure eine halbe Ewigkeit, zumal das Bremer Studio King Art deutlich weniger Zeitaufwand eingeplant hatte. Doch der erste Publisher HMH ging Pleite, das Projekt wanderte danach in die Hände von Jowood – eine (zu Recht) gebeutelte Firma, die vor einigen Monaten ebenfalls ihre Pforten schließen musste. Nun ist Publisher Crimson Cow dafür zuständig, das Spiel in die Händlerregale zu bekommen. Und King Art? Das kleine, enorm talentierte Team nutzte die unfreiwillig lange Entwicklungszeit, um das Spiel mit zusätzlichen Rätseln und Gags auszustatten, darum fällt Die Vieh Chroniken mit sechs bis acht Spielstunden umfangreicher aus als geplant. Denn eigentlich sollte das Spiel nur eine kräftige Dreingabe zu The Book of Unwritten Tales werden, Kings Arts erstem Adventure-Hit von 2009, der sich unseren Award mit einer Wertung von 85 Punkten verdient hatte.

Die Vieh Chroniken erzählt die Vorgeschichte von The Book of Unwritten Tales, weshalb von den ursprünglichen vier Helden hier nur zwei mit von der Partie sind: Der Abenteurer Nate Bonnet, ein selbtverliebter Halunke, sowie das namensgebende Vieh. Letzteres gehört zum Schrägsten, was das Genre je hervorgebracht hat: Es ist herrlich zottelig, sein dichtes Fell in sattem Violett, am Kopf trägt es zwei riesige Glubschaugen, darunter prangt eine gewaltige Schnute. Sein größtes und witzigstes Manko ist aber seine Stimme – das Vieh kann einfach nicht vernünftig sprechen, stattdessen gibt es nur unverständliche Quaklaute von sich.

Anders als der Vorgänger bietet Die Vieh Chroniken nur eine geringe Auswahl an Locations und Nebenfiguren – ein deutlicher Rückschritt im Vergleich zu The Book of Unwritten Tales. Da merkt man einfach, dass das Spiel von Anfang an weniger umfangreich angelegt war als sein Vorgänger. Trotzdem macht die Handlung Spaß: Nate, der gut gelaunte Schurke, hat sich zu Spielbeginn ein prächtiges Luftschiff ergaunert, muss aber in den eisigen Nordlanden eine Bruchlandung hinlegen. Dort trifft er nicht nur auf das Vieh, sondern auch auf dessen Kumpels – eine ganze Bande von flauschigen, glucksenden Kerlchen, freundlich, clever und von Herzen gut. Nate und das vom Pech verfolgte Vieh müssen nun zusammenarbeiten, um sich gegen Munkus, einen bösen Zauberer, zur Wehr zu setzen und um den Viechern unter die Arme zu greifen … wobei genau, das wird hier nicht verraten!
