Deliverance – A Woman’s Lot DLC review-in-progress part one, Theresa – Entertainment Focus

A Woman’s Lot is the latest piece of DLC for Kingdom Come: Deliverance and it is quite a departure from what you might expect if you’ve spent as many hours in the game as I have. It’s a very different journey to Band of Bastards. I’ve decided to review it in two parts as, well, there are two distinct parts to the DLC. In a Woman’s Lot, you are able to complete a full storyline playing as Theresa and there is also a new questline for Henry to follow which I’ll cover separately.

Before you read on there are spoilers ahead so if you want to discover the story yourself I recommend you read this after your playthrough.

In Theresa’s story, she is retelling what happened just before and after the initial attack by the Cumans. It’s a heartbreaking story that sees her almost raped, her loved ones are murdered and she is forced to kill in order to survive.

The story starts off quite tame with you carrying out simple chores such as feeding chickens, feeding your trusty hound Tinker and fetching and carrying. As you explore further you come across various characters and end up doing bits and pieces for your friends. These tasks include getting one a date to a dance, bringing beer to Henry or collecting nails from the Blacksmith.

Not exactly exciting stuff and I was a bit disappointed at first but having now played through to the end I can see that this was just trying to give us a snapshot of Theresa’s normal life as a young woman. This bland, although comical start is key to highlighting just how much she changes during her ordeal.

Once the Cumans attack, things get nasty and we see the change in Theresa. She uses stealth rather than brute force and you find yourself with a bow quite early on which proved invaluable. You are sent on various quests hunting for survivors and trying to save your dying brother to name but two. Theresa is no warrior but she can hold her own to a degree. It’s much better to use stealth if you want to go killing but much of the DLC should be doable without resorting to violence.

Accompanying you on your travels is your dog Tinker who is vital should you get into combat. You can command Tinker to attack enemies, search out treasures and issue other commands too. He was very useful in combat but I found that he got in the way quite a bit and one time he got hurt in a fight and ran off forcing me to run in the opposite direction in an attempt to get away, I failed and died, stupid dog!

Tinker’s seek ability is supposed to make him search out interesting places or items. Sometimes this worked but quite often he would just run around blindly or simply drink from a puddle then bark at it. He is not the brightest pooch on the planet and yet I found myself forming a bond with this ever-present furball.

I did encounter a few bugs during my playthrough which were cause for frustration. In one quest I had to collect various items in order to save my brother. This sounds simple enough but whilst out searching he would randomly die causing a game over and making me start again. This wouldn’t be too bad but how long he survives seemed totally random. Sometimes he would last ten minutes and the next ten seconds.

Although we’ve talked about combat, this isn’t what A Woman’s Lot is about. The storytelling is where things are at here and in this, it excels. We see Theresa change from a normal young woman into something else entirely. She goes through so much and remains strong throughout it all. She puts family above everything and others before herself.

The straw that breaks the camels back, so to speak, is when Tinker gets killed. By this time I had become so engrossed, I actually shouted: “They killed my fucking dog” in despair. He might have been a bit of a rubbish dog but he was my rubbish dog. Theresa is equally angered bellowing her war cry “Come on then goat fuckers!”

To sum up, this part of A Woman’s lot won’t be for everyone. If you simply want more combat oriented questlines then you’ll probably find this a bit dull. However, if you want to learn more about the story behind one of the more interesting characters and love great storytelling then you’ll absolutely love this.

Read part 2 where I’ve given my score for the DLC after reviewing Henry’s questline.

At the beginning of my story, I would like to ask a question, do you have any hobbies? I’m sure it is. If at the moment there are none, then surely they were before and will be in the future. And I ask this question for a reason, because you can tell a lot about yourself by hobbies or hobbies. The hunter knows the price of death and neglects life, the photographer sees time and knows how to catch it, and the blacksmith knows how to turn even a rusty nail into a work of art.

Such a detached beginning is intended to draw attention to the «prism» through which the author of these lines looks at the subject, which will be discussed further. The fact is that in my youth I had the pleasure of being a member of one of the historic fencing clubs. Therefore, I know firsthand how the armor rubs the shoulders, and the deaf helmet, flowing around from the condensate, rings out when the sword strikes. This experience, like many others, helps to better understand and feel the world of games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Of course, a long time has passed since the release of the game. Everyone who wanted to get acquainted with it and made their verdict. But, nevertheless, I would like to once again recall and conduct my own analysis of this game. So let’s start our story.

The plot of Kingdom Come: Deliverance takes us to the late Middle Ages, 1403, the Kingdom of Bohemia. Shortly before the start of the events of the game itself, King Charles IV dies and his eldest son Wenceslas sits on the throne. In addition to Wenceslas, Charles had other sons who were not alien to the desire to crush as much as possible for themselves. One of them was Sigismund, the younger half-brother of Wenceslas. In 1402, Sigismund captures the deposed Wenceslas and a civil war begins between the supporters of Wenceslas and Sigismund. In January 1403, Wenceslas was freed by his loyal knights. It is at this moment that the events of the game unfold.

The main character, the blacksmith’s son Jindřich, lives quietly and happily in the village of Silver Skalica at the beginning of the game. He is a rustic guy, but kind and open, like most of the characters in the game, not burdened by education. The prologue tells us about Jindrich’s relatives and friends, and introduces the measured rhythm of life of those years into everyday life. After a short introduction, an abyss of despair will open up over the hero with thunder and lightning. The whirlpool of events will take him away from his native village, making him not so much a participant as a witness to historical events.

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the game world is open. Whether this is good or bad, it is impossible to say for sure. On the one hand, this is good, the heady feeling of freedom and space always have a beneficial effect on the gameplay. Some landscapes are simply mesmerizing in places, especially near streams. On the other hand, there is almost nothing to do in this open world, except to admire the views. You can wander through the forests in search of rare, interesting places, but this interest is very conditional. The found samosad can still bring some benefit to the alchemist, but what to do with the ruins of huts, pagan temples or broken carts? Just watch and build theories about what happened there. It is simply impossible to find something useful except for a few treasures in the forests and fields. On the other hand, the game is still about realism. It would be strange to meet a crowd of goblins or a stone with Excalibur stuck in it. In other words, for the adventurer, the game world is as beautiful as it is dull. Does this game need an open world? Big question.

Fortunately, this game is not as empty as its vastness. A bright spot against the backdrop of a useless open world glows with gameplay. Surprisingly, exploring cities, chatting with residents and doing their mundane tasks is very interesting. The authors approached the creation of quests with a soul — no randomly generated tasks, only hand-crafted stories with the right to choose in the best traditions of the old school. However, there are not so many of them, and upon completion of all the quests, we are again left face to face with an empty world.

Four official plot add-ons added some variety. The first one is From the Ashes. It invites the player to try himself as a village manager. We have to rebuild and populate the once devastated settlement. The problem is that before this addition there is a whole caravan of the notorious «buts».

First, why such an important and expensive event falls entirely on the shoulders of a rural boy. Henry is offered not only to manage the construction process, but also to fully finance it from his own pocket, which is a bit strange. The good pan-owner of these lands has no money for construction, but a commoner must find them from somewhere. But let’s not quibble, this is just a game convention designed to ensure the withdrawal of extra money from the player’s pocket.

More importantly, why do we as players need to rebuild the village? Maybe for the sake of interesting quests that will take place along the way? No, they will not do. Everything will be limited to the search for employees and the opportunity to be in the judge’s chair a couple of times. Maybe for the sake of profit, which the pan promises to give us completely after we fix the economy? And again no. Why do we need profit from this unfortunate village, if we found somewhere one and a half hundred thousand for its construction. In general, the addition turned out to be unnecessary and not worth the time and effort spent.

The second expansion Bold Sir Hans Capon was already much better. It tells about the love affairs of our bosom friend Jan Ptacek. It is better only against the background of the previous DLC, because although it is story-oriented, it adds few quests. However, some of them are interesting, and in some places you can even die with laughter. It’s a pity that this story feels unfinished and ends in mid-sentence.

The third addition of Band of Bastards, in my opinion, is the most interesting. Our beloved newfound father will send us to look after a detachment of mercenaries who owe him a favor. The fact is that especially merciless robbers began to operate on his lands, and a mercenary detachment was invited to fight them. In this DLC, we will meet new interesting characters and go through a series of quests in which our hero’s talents will be revealed.

It’s worth noting that I expected more. Don’t get me wrong, the add-on is good, but the writers were either pushed by a harsh publisher or relaxed. There were several key moments where I was sure that an unexpected turn was about to happen and everything would turn upside down, like in the best detective novels. But no, the authors did not take advantage of this opportunity and events are proceeding along the most direct channel. However, you should definitely familiarize yourself with Band of Bastards if you haven’t already.

And the last, fourth addition, A Woman’s Lot is divided into two parts. The first part invites us to visit Teresa’s dress, mind you, not under the dress, but in the dress. In other words, we are given the opportunity to look at the events of the beginning of the game through the eyes of Teresa. According to the description, the addition was supposed to tell about the difficult fate of women in the Middle Ages. However, as the story progresses, Teresa fires up so much that many men nervously smoke on the sidelines. This DLC is interesting because it allows us to look at the events of the beginning of the game in a new way. While Henry lay in a fever, wounded by an arrow far from Skalitz.

The second half of A Woman’s Lot is dedicated to Johanka, who suddenly discovered her prophetic and theological gifts. The quest chain will show us what sudden divine insights led to in those years. However, no matter how the story of Johanka ends, it is worth noting that the same consequences would have awaited a man in her place, there is no talk of any difficult female share, this topic remains undisclosed. From myself, I note that I really liked the ending of this DLC, it is multifaceted and will require agility from Henry and the manifestation of all his talents.

Let’s go directly to the gameplay part of the game. The Kingdom Come: Deliverance role-playing system offers us a classless option for leveling the hero. In other words, the hero can become a jack of all trades. Skills are pumped in the same way as in T.E.S … The more you use a particular skill, the better you get. There are seventeen character skills in total, and there are no useless ones among them. Any skill may be needed in a particular quest and this will directly affect its outcome.

I would especially like to highlight a few skills, the occupation of which causes genuine interest, at least at first. Let’s start with alchemy, which, as you remember, has an applied value and is made in the form of a mini-game — cook it yourself. In other words, in order to prepare a potion, you need to go to the alchemy laboratory, find the desired recipe in the book, read it and start creating, acting strictly according to the instructions. This is a fascinating process, consisting of many stages, but it quickly gets boring. Fortunately, in the section of alchemical perks there is one that allows you to save yourself from manual production, so you don’t have to constantly suffer by performing the same manipulations. It also depends on alchemy whether we can save the game, because this requires a special schnapps. In my opinion, an absolutely unnecessary element that is designed to force the player to engage in alchemy. Fortunately, you can get rid of it with a simple mod.

The second skill that deserves special attention, or rather skills, are thieves’ skills. Yes, the stealth system in the game is clumsy, and lockpicking can infuriate an inexperienced player. Nevertheless, cleaning the houses of wealthy citizens is not only pleasant, but also useful. I also like how the stealth system is implemented. You can’t just sneak into a house in plate armor. For everything to go well, you need to get dark clothes and soft boots. These things will help to blend in with the shadows, which is quite logical. The best choice for a thief, oddly enough, would be a black monastic cassock. It not only has a low visibility parameter, but also hides your identity, passers-by will mistake Henry for a monk.

I want to note the protective equipment that can be put on the hero. I love dressing up my characters, and was a fan of Morrowind at one time with its split gloves. Here, in general, the same story, except that everything is extremely realistic. You can put on so many elements of clothing and armor on a character that sometimes it seems like he has not lost the ability to move at all? From my own experience, I can say that moving in such equipment is not so difficult. Noble warriors were equipped in this way for battle and looked like an armored puff pastry made of armor, chain mail and quilting. This provided them on the battlefield, if not invulnerability, then at least excellent protection, which was a very difficult task to cope with. True, Henry is ahead of any knight in his ability to cover himself with mud from head to toe in the shortest possible time, but he is a commoner and we, I think, will forgive him such carelessness.

And finally, I left my favorite aspect of this game. Combat system. It is not for nothing that the developers invited fencing masters and used motion capture technology. Combat is one of the most interesting mechanics of this game. And yes, where there are big pluses, there are also big minuses. The combat system in Kingdom Come: Deliverance is designed entirely for one-on-one battles. Still nothing if a bunch of peasants run out at you, imagining themselves to be robbers, each one is enough for a blow. However, when three of the same men-at-arms as you come out against you, it’s bad. Here, again, one can refer to realism, because in real life such a situation would not bode well. Although it is still a game and such a combat system, when it comes to a group of enemies, is not viable. Only surprise and a bow can help.

However, one-on-one combat with an experienced opponent is a work of art. Blocks, parries, strikes merge into one continuous chain, looking for weakness and testing you and the enemy for strength. I note, however, that the creators were a little too clever with the implementation of combinations of blows. If some of them, with a certain practice, can still be implemented, then others are some kind of mockery of the players in terms of their implementation. Combining five hits from different directions while you yourself are hit on the head with a club is almost impossible.

To sum up, the game is a very controversial product. On the one hand, good, interesting quests and exciting duels. On the other hand, there is an empty world and lack of balance in battles with two or more opponents. Just like you, I did not forget what the game was at the start of sales. Bugs riding on glitches drove around Bohemia after Henry, did not let him into houses, tore off clothes from citizens and turned off the game out of the blue. Fortunately, the situation has been corrected and now Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a completely stable product. Despite all the disadvantages, I, like many, still fell in love with this game and someday I will definitely return to the open spaces of Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
