How to fix “IPv6 Connectivity: No Internet access” error

Question

Issue: How to fix “IPv6 Connectivity: No Internet access” error

Recently I keep getting this message: IPv6 Connectivity: No Internet access and I cannot access the internet at all. I really don’t understand what happened, as everything worked fine before. I tried to restart my computer multiple times, but it did not help. I am writing using my phone as I still cannot use my PC for web browsing and other online stuff. Please help!

Solved Answer

IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is a successor of IPv4, which still remains the most widely used internet protocol.[1] Nevertheless, eventually, IPv6 will replace the older variant as the computer user count is growing steadily, and IPv4 will run out of all available IP addresses.

IPv6 Connectivity: No Internet access error is relatively common, but typically is not hard to fix. Users reported the problem after the recent Windows 10 Fall Creators update (v1709[2]). Most likely, it is the compatibility issue between the machine and Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), which does not allow the machine to establish a normal internet connection properly. Additionally, only some internet providers permit using IPv6, preventing the networking equipment from using it. Finally, the router[3] at use might be configured to use IPv4 instead of IPv6.

The IPv6 Connectivity: No Internet access issue can occur due to different reasons, including:

  • Wrong IPv6 settings
  • Outdated network drivers
  • Incorrect IP configuration
  • IP Helper malfunction, etc.

Regardless of the reason, our security experts prepared a detailed guide which will help you to establish a normal internet connection and fix IPv6 No Internet access error. Before you proceed with the solution, we recommend users scanning their machine with ReimageMac Washing Machine X9 to make sure that these issues are not caused by malware[4] (viruses are known to interfere with normal computer operation and even disabling specific functions, like internet connection).

Warum Das?

what is the difference, what is worth choosing

Many already know about IPv6 and that it will replace IPv4. Why is this done, what is the difference between these versions, why is the first better for ordinary users, and is it necessary to make an Internet connection in Kaliningrad through it?

What is IPv4

The protocol is based on NAT technology. Its essence is that each device receives its own IP, but sites and programs see only one, which is the disadvantage of the system. nine0003

If a group of employees from a single corporate network immediately want to log in to a web resource at the same time, then IPv4 shows the systems a single address and does not read them for each person individually, because they are in the internal system. As a result, the server sees multiple visits as a DDoS attack and blocks access from this address. This means that all users of this network will be banned.

IPv4 provides addresses from a combination of 4 numbers from zero to 255. The system developers did not suspect that someday their combinations would not be enough to serve all users. nine0003

What is IPv6

IPv6 has moved away from the NAT system and each user has its own IP address. As a result, the system does not perceive as DDoS attacks active inputs to one common address, as it was in the previous version.

IPv6 is an 8 number address. It is possible to create 340 combinations. This amount of IP is enough for all users.

The protocol is based on a hexadecimal code, and each user has the ability to get their own subnets for the internal network. nine0003

The protocol uses IPsec encryption, which completely hides the traffic. Due to IPsec encryption, it is virtually impossible to decrypt it. This option is also present in the 4th version, but as an additional one. In IPv6, it is wired in by default.

What is the difference between IPv6 and IPv4.

Why is IPv6 better?

IPv4:

  • Support all devices;
  • Issued by all providers; nine128.

IPv6 is monitored by Google. According to its data, as of May 8, 2021, 31.4% of users have already used this version of the protocol. According to the Web3Tech portal, only 18.6% of sites support the six.

Why is IPv6 better? To clearly show the advantages of the system, we will display the main advantages in relation to IPv4:

  • there is a built-in QoS — a technology that determines packets that are sensitive to delay;
  • better and more efficient routing, no packet fragmentation; nine0033
  • overcoming NAT restrictions made it possible to expand the list of addresses from 32 to 128 bits;
  • automatic address configuration makes networking easier;
  • there is IPsec support, the use of which is optional;
  • Improved header structure, reducing processing overhead.

How much more secure is IPv6 than IPv4

In theory, both systems are equally secure. Activating IPv6 makes it possible to encrypt traffic using IPSec, a popular encryption standard. It prevents the contents from being read if an interception occurs. nine0003

Encryption and reverse processes require special expensive equipment. Both IP protocols are secure, but experts believe that the transition to the new version has not yet been completed, so its users are vulnerable, unlike users of the 4th version. But the latter, thanks to providers, gain access to IPv6 content using IPv6 tunnels. They can be used for attacks.

There is another problem — this is auto-configuration, that is, a new feature of IPv6. This option allows devices to obtain an IP address based on the MAC address on their own. And it can be used by third parties to track participants in the system. To prevent these risks, privacy extensions are provided on devices that use known operating systems, and this issue is addressed for many users. nine0003

Why the transition to IPv6 takes so long

The reason for the delay is the high cost. To do this, you will have to upgrade all servers, switches, routers that previously worked with IPv4, and you will need to spend a lot of time.

Providers everywhere practice the use of a dynamic address that changes when you switch to another network. Gadgets that are disconnected from the Internet release addresses that become available to other devices. It turns out that the user does not own a specific address, but only rents it. nine0003

All of these compromises and the difficulty of replacing devices are slowing down the long-awaited transition from IPv4 to IPv6. However, IPv6 continues to actively spread, it is used in parallel with the old version. Google data says that 14% of users already have the new protocol. And according to the American provider Comcast, since 2018 in the US, 50% of users have already made the transition to IPv6.

Conclusions

We can’t say for sure that IPv6 is more secure and faster than the quad, but its advantages are obvious. This list includes support for IPsec, routing without packet fragmentation, the ability to automatically configure addresses. nine0003

Switching to IPv6 is the right decision, which will be helped by the Etype provider. Internet connection occurs in a short time with the exception of all pre-existing problems. Now users will receive high-quality uninterrupted communication!

and methods for migrating from IPv4 to IPv6. nine0003

IPv4

The fourth version of the IP Internet protocol has been in operation since 1982, when it was deployed on the SATNET satellite network that formed the basis for the Internet. Until now, IPv4 is the main protocol on the Internet.

IPv4 provides the ability to address approximately 4.3 billion addresses. Every device on public and private networks using the TCP/IP protocol must have an IP address to identify the device and locate it. After the rapid growth of Internet traffic in 19In the 1990s, it became apparent that many more addresses would be needed to connect all users than were available in the IPv4 address pool.

It operates at the network layer of the OSI models. Being a connectionless protocol, it sends packets to their destination via various routes.

Deep Packet Inspection

More details

The fourth version of the protocol supports 32-bit addresses. Such an address consists of 4 parts, each of which is separated by a dot. For example: 100.101.102.103. The range of each part is 0-255. IPv4 addresses have been divided into different classes based on the range of IP addresses. nine0003

IPv6

IPv6 was introduced in December 1995. It was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and is the most recent version of the Internet protocol. IPv6 is more advanced than IPv4 and provides better functionality.

As noted above, each device on the Internet is assigned a certain unique IP address. The new protocol can provide an almost infinite number of addresses for devices and replaces the previous version to serve the growing amount of traffic around the world and address the shortage of IP addresses. nine28 (about 79,228,162,514,264,337,593,543,950,336 octillion). This means that the protocol will provide the possibility of using more than 300 million IP addresses for every inhabitant of the Earth.

Unlike IPv4, a typical IPv6 address is 128 bits long. It consists of eight groups, each containing four hexadecimal digits separated by «:». Here is an example: 3005: 0db6: 82a5: 0000: 0000: 7a1e: 1460: 5334.

In 2012, the share of IPv6 in Internet traffic was about 5%. For 2020, according to Google, this share is about 30%. nine0003

The difference between the two versions

The main external difference between the fourth and sixth versions of the protocol is the structure of the IP address. IPv4 uses four single-byte decimal numbers separated by a dot (172. 268.0.1). IPv6 — Hexadecimal numbers separated by colons (fe70::d5a9:4521:d1d7:d8f4b11). What else:

  • IPv4 uses numeric addressing methods, while IPv6 uses alphanumeric methods.
  • IPv4 address length is 32 bits, IPv6 address length is 128 bits.
  • nine0032 IPv4 and IPv6 offer fields with 12 and 8 headers, respectively.

  • Broadcast channels are only supported in IPv4. IPv6 supports multicast groups.
  • The checksum field is present in IPv4 but not in IPv6.
  • The concept of variable length netmasks is only applicable to IPv4.
  • Version 4 uses ARP to resolve MAC addresses, while IPv6 uses NDP.
  • IPv4 supports manual and DHCP address setting, IPv6 supports auto address setting and renumbered address setting. nine0033
  • IPv4 can generate up to 4.29 billion address array, while IPv6 can generate up to 79,228,162,514,264,337,593,543,950,336 octillion.
  • IPv4 uses unique public and «private» addresses for traffic, IPv6 uses globally unique unicast addresses and local addresses (FD00::/8).

Improvements in IPv6

  • IPv6 provides more efficient routing because it greatly reduces the size of the routing table.
  • The new protocol has a simpler header format than IPv4. nine0033
  • Packet processing is more efficient because packet headers are optimized.
  • Quality of Service (QoS) technology is built into the protocol, which determines delay-sensitive packets.
  • More simplified router tasks than IPv4.
  • IPv6 provides more payload than IPv4.
  • IPv6 has built-in authentication and private support compared to IPv4.

Why migrate to IPv6

The Internet is running out of IPv4 addresses. This was inevitable, given how widespread networks and networked devices have proliferated. Even on a local network, users have to use subnets, simply because devices, for example, on a corporate network, could occupy all 192.68.1.# addresses. For this, IPv6 was developed, which offers a larger pool of addresses to use.

However, another problem appears: it is not so easy to switch to IPv6 and optimize the work with the new protocol. A user can have hundreds of devices and multiple locations. In addition, there is always a DNS that needs to be updated (which can be tantamount to downtime). After all, 192.168.1.1 much easier to remember than 0:0:0:0:0:ffff:c0a8:101.

It can take a lot of money and time to upgrade all servers and devices that previously only worked with IPv4. This can be avoided by using some tools.

How to make a smooth migration

IPv6 is not backward compatible with IPv4. Because of this, many administrators avoid the new protocol. What to do?

First, you need to move devices to a hybrid environment where IPv4 and IPv6 coexist. For many, the transition to IPv6 began many years ago. Most analysts predicted it would take years, but hybrid models give even more time as users will run their networks using both types of addresses. nine0003

Because the address structures are very different and IPv6 uses a different data packet architecture, IPv4 devices and IPv6 devices cannot communicate without using a gateway.

The most popular hybrid sharing strategies involve tunneling, in which IPv6 traffic is encapsulated in an IPv4 header. Although this does come with additional overhead, a double stack that complicates the network and requires additional resources..0003

Suppose a company has desktop computers that use IPv6, but servers use IPv4. There will be a gateway between the PC and the servers, which will make it possible to convert IPv6 addresses to IPv4 addresses.

Many router and switch manufacturers are developing devices that help with the transition to IPv6. So when you no longer need to connect to services that still use IPv4, you can move from a hybrid environment to a network fully equipped for IPv6. nine0003

In a comfortable transition to IPv6, the NAT mechanism (Network Address Translation — network address and port translation), which is used in IP protocols and allows you to replace the local (gray) IP address with a public (white) one, can help. Exhausting IPv4 increases the cost to the service provider, while investing in NAT will reduce the cost.
