DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME or MONEY! This game has gotten worse over the last couple of months. I spend $100’s a month since this is my way to relax and entertain myself. However, NO MORE! I purchased 2 coin packages 2 weeks ago. When I got the confirmation notices, I never received my packages. Thought nothing of it until I received my itunes receipts. Thankfully, I disputed with Itunes and within a couple of days, I received a full refund. Unfortunately, I had purchased more coins during this time and was blind sided by the charges I thought did not go through. HOWEVER, I gave them the benefit of the doubt……big mistake! Now, at times, I will win BIG. Game will freeze and it refunds the bet amount instead of giving you the millions of coins that you won! Today is the last day this game will ever get another dime of my money. I spent over $30 on coin packages. All coins gone in less than 10 mins. And, that is only betting a very low bet. I placed in a tournament and I was never awarded my winnings. They want my money ALL day but when it comes to them paying out, you lose all the way around. This is my first time ever downloading this app. And I like to give slot apps a chance in the beginning, even if their little beginner bonus/coins are barely enough to really bet high without going broke in the first 5 min. Hello, today I will tell you about developing my first game on Android, publishing it on Google Play, buying advertising in Google Ads and income. I advise everyone who will create a game for the first time to read this article, because here you will find useful information and some nuances that I personally have not encountered in the stories of other people.

History

Let’s start with me. I am a designer by education and continue my education. In the near future I plan to go to university to study code and later you will understand why. Although I am young, I am already looking for applications for my knowledge. One summer evening, I thought about creating a mobile game. It seemed to me that this was a fairly simple process, and I already had a concept for the game. The release date for Cyberpunk 2077 has been set for the fall, which means that the cyberpunk theme will be in the spotlight. I remembered old games like «Space Shooter» and an idea flashed through my head:

“What if we replace a spaceship with a motorcycle or a car, and space with a city?”

I immediately suggested that a coder I know create a game, code from him, and design from me, but the response was refused. So the idea was forgotten for a long time.

Beginning

Autumn. Cyberpunk 2077 is coming out in a month. And then my student friend (he is also a designer) is given a term paper task to develop a design for a mobile game. I immediately remember my idea with a cyberpunk game, I suggest to a friend to develop a design for this particular game and put it on Google Play, as they say: “kill two birds with one stone.” The friend agrees without hesitation. He writes to a familiar programmer and he, without any doubt, agreed to participate in the project.

Active development. 10-12 hours a day at PC

At the start, our team has formed. The very next day after the coder’s consent, my friend and I begin active development of graphics. We were lucky that at this time our educational institution had holidays, so we could spend all our free time playing. Initially, we planned to make the whole design for in 2 weeks, another week for the code for , and just in time for the release of Cyberpunk 2077. It was a very optimistic plan.

We decided to design the game in vector. After a day of testing, we saw that this option did not solve our problem of achieving a truly «glowing neon». But we weren’t about to give up. The next day, what I thought was a brilliant idea came to my mind:

We will make the entire design in 3D, then render and, as a result, we will get detailed sprites, glowing neon, and at the same time the game will not be resource-intensive for phones.

As I found out later, this used to be done when creating computer games, when PCs were still inefficient. Since I just started learning 3ds MAX, this was not a problem for me. I started making the background in 3D and we immediately understood — is what we wanted . The result was ten times better than in the vector. Compare yourself.

For the menu, we also had two options. As with the background, the second one was much better. So we made design development much more difficult for ourselves, but we liked the more time-consuming option much more. There was a clear conviction in my head:

Make it beautiful and people will definitely like it.

It was because of this belief that my friend and I spent all our free time playing the game. We sat down at the PC at 9 am, called each other and got up at 22. During all this time we had about 3 breaks of 30 minutes each to have a snack.

So the next 2 weeks flew by. Two weeks have passed, so the graphics are ready? No. We absolutely missed the deadline. There was still a lot of work to do, and the release of Cyberpunk 2077 is already on the nose. There was also education. But then something happens that we were very happy about, namely CD PROJECT RED postpone the release of cyberpunk for 21 days. Breathing a sigh of relief, we continued to work without relaxing.

After another week and a half, the design was ready, and we threw off all the assets to the encoder. But we got an answer that he had a blockage in his studies and that we needed to arrange the menu in Unity, animate the sprites and send him prefabs. We were not familiar with Unity at all. I’m starting to figure out what and how, life did not prepare me for such a turn, but I already invested too much of my time to quit this project. Having figured it out, I train my friend, and together we carry out the encoder’s instructions. A few days later we finished with Unity and gave the prefabs to the coder. We get the answer again — no time. We had no choice but to just wait. The deadline is getting closer, and we don’t even have a demo version. Less than a week before the release of Cyberpunk 2077, the coder finally finds free time for our game. At an accelerated pace, the three of us are working on the project, the coder is writing the code, I am testing the game, adjusting the balance, and my friend is creating a game trailer for Google Play. In one day and for the first time going into Adobe Premier, he made a video that we liked immensely. Check it out.

Publishing the game. Rejection

December 10th. We are uploading the game for review. After collecting information on the Internet, we were determined that in 4 days the game would be on Google Play. After 3 days we receive a letter of refusal in the mail:

Our feelings at this moment cannot be described. The letter contained a clipping from the terms of use and a link to the rules themselves. After reviewing them, we corrected the game, but as we understood later, the problem was that the target audience included children under the age of 13, and we did this because it was said in the Google Play Console that otherwise our game would receive the next not for children . Having made all the changes, we uploaded the new version and waited.

The game was published

After 6 days the game was published. Although we have already failed all the deadlines, but the game was finally available for download. Ironically, making a game in cyberpunk style, we did not meet more than one deadline, as did CD PROJECT RED.

After the first tests of the game, we found that Admob ads do not work , we found information on the Internet that the ad will appear within a day after publication. We wait. A day later, nothing has changed, we started to check the code and noticed an error in the identifiers of the ad units, at the end of each, spaces were mysteriously added. We quickly fixed the bugs and uploaded a new version for review. Everywhere it was written that updates are confirmed in 2 days. It was not so with us, this update, like all subsequent ones, was checked for 6 days. We can say for sure:

In the new version, advertising has started working, we started setting up Google Ads . Initially, we expected to buy installations in the US for $0.05 — $0.07. We found on the Internet that one person bought installations in the USA for 4 rubles for his game. In our opinion, our game is much more beautiful and therefore we will be able to buy for the same amount or cheaper. But more on that later. We set a target price per install of $0.05 and waited.

The next day I go to Admob and see a notification that we don’t have app-ads.txt set up. Trouble again . I quickly find information about this file and find out that app-ads.txt is a text file that should contain a unique code that you can find in Admob. Read on as carefully as possible. The file must be located in the root of your site, which is specified in your Google Play Console settings as a developer website. Now we also need site . It’s good that once upon a time, I studied a little html, css and a little js. Having refreshed my knowledge of website layout, I made the simplest possible website overnight. Now everything should definitely work.

The next morning. One of my friends writes to me, part-time tester of our game, and says that the game freezes . I take the phone and try to find bug by all means . Bug found. It consisted in the fact that after watching ads for doubling, the currency collected in the race and the subsequent death in the next race, the game simply hung. I immediately write to the coder, he was just free and quickly fixed the bug. As he himself said,0051 he fixed only three lines in the code and all the errors disappeared from us. Before that, our enemies were twitching, the programmer said that it would take too long to fix it, and it was decided not to pay attention to this bug, especially since none of our testers paid attention to the twitching. We added new enemies to the game, corrected the description a bit so that it would contain more keywords, we decided to rely on the theme of cyberpunk, because the main keywords were the words: cyberpunk, cyberpunk game and cyberpunk games. The update turned out to be quite voluminous. We have finally uploaded a fully working version.

6 days of waiting and the correct version of the game is available on Google Play. There are 2 days before the new year, we decide to rest in a good mood for a few days and on January 2, rested and joyful, we will return to work. True, a gift from Admob awaited us for the New Year, but more on that later.

A/B tests

Let’s digress from the game itself and talk a little about the design of the Google Play page. For the application page, we developed an icon, 6 screenshots and a very dynamic trailer, which I mentioned above. As we saw after a while,0051 the video was not viewed at all . I was amazed by this, according to our calculations, it is due to this video that we will have a fairly high percentage of conversion, but as it turned out, no one is interested in the video. During the development of that version without bugs, we came to the conclusion that we should make the car on the icon larger and more expressive. Having created the icons, we decided not just to replace the icon, but to use A / B testing. For beginners, A/B tests are also tested by , we did not know this and assumed that the number of visits increased due to the new icon, but it turned out to be due to the New Year holidays.

I was very shocked, depressed, etc., you understand that I did not expect this at all. We have overcome so many difficulties and problems again.

I spent the whole first of January in a depressed state and thought about what to do next. A small note, in our game there are no mandatory ads at all, only rewarded ads, so the player can play safely and not waste time watching ads, but we have also turned off this income. It’s been 2 months and we only have expenses .

Briefly about how we purchased units in the USA. Since initially we set a cost per conversion of $0.05, our ads were not shown at all, we were not very upset, the game still had big problems. Now, there will definitely be no advertising in the application for a month due to the Admob check, and in order for the check to pass, we need an audience from which requests for advertising will go. We set Target CPA to $0.20 and a budget of $10 per day to and started monitoring our advertising campaign. The next day we got 15 installs for $4. The installation price is $0.27, we decided not to change anything and just wait, as everyone on the Internet claims, the robot needs time to learn. The next morning we saw shocking statistics, 12 installs for $7, $0.60 per install. We realized that we would simply merge the entire budget in this way and set the budget per day to $1. Next, we were able to get 7 installs for $1.07, $0.15 per install. The first nice gift was waiting for us at Christmas, we bought installations at a price of 0.08$ per installation, the conversion was 60% .
