Why We Won’t Have the Full Picture of Hogwarts Legacy’s Sales Until Much Later This Year

Hogwarts Legacy may already prove to be a success on current-gen platforms, but that success could extend through the summer via last-gen ports.
Hogwarts Legacy is an enormous action-RPG with much more of an open world to explore than fans may have initially believed. Of course, much of what fans are excited for is likely to do with the titular castle itself, such as what sort of exploration, secrets, and activities they can get up to while roaming its corridors and classrooms. The game has obviously been divisive in response to J.K. Rowling, but that does not yet seem to have impacted the game negatively with regard to its popularity and how many fans are willing to either watch or play Hogwarts Legacy since its launch.
Harry Potter is one of the most notable and iconic franchises in the entire world, and a game like Hogwarts Legacy is what fans of the IP have dreamed of since they played the original Harry Potter games that tied into each movie installment. Hogwarts Legacy is its own unique aside from Harry Potter in many ways, telling a new narrative with new characters in an earlier era. The game has already shown early signs of being a massive success since its early access period and global launch, but it has a chance to excel even further with port releases later this year.

Hogwarts Legacy Hits a Twitch Milestone Amid Controversy
Hogwarts Legacy’s inherent divisiveness was previously thought to have hushed any excitement surrounding it, but it seems as though its controversy has actually amplified it in a new way.
Many fans have chosen to boycott Hogwarts Legacy for their own reasons while other fans are happy to still play it, and viewership for Hogwarts Legacy on Twitch was exceptional this past week.
This is evidence enough that the game has been a topic of conversation enough for fans to at least be interested in what it is like, giving more attention to it in the process. If nothing else, this shows that Hogwarts Legacy still has a huge fanbase behind it despite what opinions or views players may have.
If this is indicative of what the game’s success will look like, too, then it can be expected that Hogwarts Legacy’s launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S will be a great success. However, even if it is a big success around launch, Hogwarts Legacy still has an opportunity to extend that success throughout the year.
Hogwarts Legacy Will Have a Shelf Life Throughout the Year
Players have several opportunities to be invited to Hogwarts throughout 2023.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Deluxe edition featured 72-hour early access, allowing eager fans to get a head start on their OWL preparations and field guide progress that not all fans would get. Meanwhile, Hogwarts Legacy only recently launched globally on current-gen consoles.
That said, Hogwarts Legacy is not exclusive to current-gen, and ports for PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch are all currently in the works. Hogwarts Legacy will have releases on last-gen platforms and Nintendo Switch later this year, with PS4 and Xbox One versions releasing on April 4 and the Nintendo Switch version releasing on July 25.
These release windows make sense, especially considering the depth of field and environmental texture fidelity that might take a dive on a Switch port of Hogwarts Legacy. It will be interesting to see what success Hogwarts Legacy receives around launch, and it will be exciting to see if its ports can perform well enough and amplify the game’s success into the summer.
Hogwarts Legacy is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One ports are scheduled to release on April 4, whereas the Nintendo Switch version is arriving July 25, 2023.

Hogwarts Legacy: When the Game Launches on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4
Hogwarts Legacy officially launched last week, allowing wizarding fans the chance to enter their own magical fantasy. The open-world RPG is set in the Harry Potter universe, and it seems like the game that many fans of the books have long hoped for.
The new game from developer Avalanche Software lets players experience the famed school of witchcraft and wizardry as a student in the 1800s, before the events of the Harry Potter books. Here are some basic things to know about Hogwarts Legacy, including when you can snag a copy depending on your platform.
What’s the story?
Hogwarts Legacy players will «embark on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world,» according to the game’s website.
You can explore Hogwarts Castle, where you attend classes. You can also go beyond it to new and familiar locations, per the website.
You can customize your character, choose a Hogwarts house and grow your magical abilities by brewing potions, mastering spells and taming beasts. Hogwarts Legacy sticks to the lore but doesn’t adapt the Harry Potter books and films.
What systems can I play Hogwarts Legacy on?
PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions of the game launched on Feb. 10. Those looking to play the PS4 and Xbox One versions will, unfortunately, need to wait until April 4.
Nintendo Switch users will have to hang on even longer, until July 25, to play Hogwarts Legacy.
The game was first announced in 2020, and its release dates have changed three times. It’s published by Warner Bros. Games under its Portkey Games label.
Is there early access?
The Deluxe Edition or Digital Deluxe Edition for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC included 72 hours of early access, starting Feb.

Where can I buy Hogwarts Legacy?
If you’re interested in the Standard Edition, you can buy the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions from stores, including GameStop, Amazon and Best Buy for $70 (about £57, AU$99). You can preorder the PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions from those stores for $60 (roughly £49, $AU85). The PC version is available for $60 at Steam and the Epic Games store.
You can view more ways to purchase Hogwarts Legacy (including how to buy the Deluxe Edition) on the game’s website. The Collector’s Edition has already sold out, but you may be able to find it online for a markup. The official site breaks down what comes with each edition.
What are critics saying?
The game has a Metacritic score of 85 on PS5. (The score is higher on Xbox Series X|S, and a bit lower on PC, but the PS5 score is based on the most reviews, 74.)
CNET critic Sean Keane played the PS5 version and writes in a positive review that «it captures the wonder of the early books, with an intriguing original narrative, engagingly varied gameplay and intricately designed world to explore.

J.K. Rowling and Hogwarts Legacy
The game’s connection to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has led her critics to call for a boycott, according to The Week. Over the past few years, Rowling has repeatedly made comments that mocked transgender individuals and infuriated trans advocates.
The Hogwarts Legacy website notes that Rowling isn’t involved in the creation of Hogwarts Legacy. But her writing is the foundation for the project and she still makes money off of sales.
